Thank you so much. I really appreciate the video. Mine turned off for 4 days and I had been taking cold shower. Finally I came across you're vid and it's back on. YES!!
Thanks! Our pilot light went out and I followed the instructions that are printed on the side over and over. Then I watched your video which confirmed I was doing it right. Then I tried again and it started right up. On our model the "window" is 1/2" x1/4". Super tiny. I kept looking and looking until I found the right viewing angle (lower and looking slightly upward). You video confirmed I wasn't crazy and gave me clear idea of what I was supposed to see in the window. Thanks.
I did well in school and put up structural steel buildings Yeah, no limitations until the pilot light episode. I followed instructions & didn't understand a key part about the Electric Spark Generator. Meaning I was pushing down the black button & thinking all the noise involved there was an internal actuator that did 2 in one. Smarty pants (me) saw your video and heard the key word "press the green igniter". Warning to smart people like me; a litigious mind doesn't always work. Thank you sir!
Thank you so much you just saved me some money, it was so easy I couldn't believe how simple. My heater is exactly like the one you used in the demo (A.O.Smith Promax)
Thanks for the great video. I changed out a gas line at my aunt's house, and we had to shut the gas off at the meter. I had no idea how to light the pilot. I was used to the old school type where you stick the long match in there and light the pilot. Thanks a million.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. We have the exact same model as this, and the instruction for re-lighting the pilot are not at all clear. With your video in mind, I went downstairs and started it right up! (The repair place wanted to charge me $1000+ for a new water heater because they don't service that brand any more. Really? Made in 2005, and they're already trying to convince me to pay them a grand? Yeah right.)
Thank you very much this saves me a lot of time and hassle with my landlord the only thing that you're missing me is that you have to turn the knob from pilot to on.
I'd just like to say thank you for posting this video. It was incredibly helpful. I'd never had to interact with a hot water heater and probably would have ended up paying a plumber to come out to simply relight the pilot. Thanks again.
the number one reason for pilot light failure in the newer style water heaters is a dirty flame arrestor. the flame arrestor is located under the water heater. the flame arrestor is in a hard to reach place but can be easily cleaned with the tightspotvacuum brush. preventive maintance is a must.
Excellent video mines ddnt ignite but now im sure its something that i cant fix and i just have to call a service thank you for the vid once mines fixed if it goes out and its minor ill know what to do
Follow the directions about waiting and then retry. I have also found that using an electronic spark lighter with the inline electrical connector works great, but not everyone has one.
Nice video but caution about using the flex copper for the T&P relief line. It's not allowed. If you point this out to the plumber that installed it I'm sure he will replace it with full hard pipe or risk losing his license or worse paying for the damage if that valve ever released super heated steam.
How do you periodically “exercise” the T&P valve? What do you mean by “exercise”? Are we suppose to flip it up and down or something? And why is thus necessary?
question: my gas bill is high and it's summer. I called the gas company and they said there is an appliance that is being turned on at night around 9pm and uses gas for several hours. I don't turn anything on at night so I'm assuming there is a problem with my water heater. It's an American Standard one. Is it possible it's heating the water at night even though I'm not turning the water on?
I have this model. The pilot light keeps going out, happens right after the shower is run. It's happened about 5/6 times in the past 2 months. Now it wont even spark to be lit...I am so pissed....
I did this cause my water was cold. I did it but when I went to turn the water on it got cold do I wait or what ? Cause I immediately turned the water on after I finished to see it working.
@710candlewood I dont know if my other comment posted, but I said that I fixed it.. The pilot and burner were cutting out. I got a new thermocouple but the water heater I have has a different thermocouple from the one I bought. Turns out the burner needed to be cleaned off
Ok so the knob is off. It’s leaking so trying to turn gas off so knob is off and the other knob is on A! To turn it off completely, do I turn it to pilot lighting?
I just installed a AO Smith water heater model GNR 50 yesterday. The manual said the anode need to be replaced after a few years, but I could find where the anode port is located. Do you happen to know?
Do you have any videos as to how to replace the pilot assembly for this type of water heater? You said it was sealed but I've been noticing a lot of people just replace the parts and dont do much abou the seal or mention replacing any gaskets.. Can you comment on that?
I don't have any videos of that. I'm sure that a lot of people replace parts without replacing the seal, not the proper way to do it on a sealed unit. They used to not have seals at all, but these are safer if you have an external source of flammable gas(like something spilled in the garage).
I have the same ignition as the one in this video. Around this time of year (the spring) the pilot light keeps going out. every day I'll have to ignite the water heater. Any ideas to the problem? Also I'm noticing that the pilot light won't stay on as long as I'm holding down the pilot light gas button. by the time I switch it from pilot light to on and turn the tempiture knob, the pilot light has already gone out. frustrating.... Thanks in advance
Please help! I have a a.o. smith powerhouse power shot - natural gas and 80 gallon. It has been out for 3 weeks now. Do you know how it can be fix or what's the problem? I have this guy who is willing to help me but he is asking 300 dollars, which is way off my budget.
Mine is old. I only have on knob on top of the switch...and there's like one switch or button, there's no pilot or anything. I'm just afraid I turn it off but the gas still keeps coming out as Monoxide.....and shit happens. How the hell do I turn my gas off b/c my house is hot as hell and my water heater is in my kitchen which is connected to my living room....?
hey 710candlewood can you help me? My water heater looks exactly like yours, but Im having problems..I keep having to relight the pilot after about 20 min... I light it, turn the temperature up to about B level, the burner catches fire (like at 2:16 of this video), but after about 20 min, the entire heater essentially shuts down.. The pilot doesnt stay lit or anything.. Do you know what the problem is?
Old reply, but you hold the gas button for a little while to really heat up the thermocouple, if after holding it for a while it still goes out, then it's a problem with the thermocouple, the control valve, or the wiring between the two.
10 years later and this video proves just as useful! Much love to you and thank u!
Thank you so much. I really appreciate the video. Mine turned off for 4 days and I had been taking cold shower. Finally I came across you're vid and it's back on. YES!!
Thank you for thoroughly explaining how to properly turn the heater off!!
Thank you, thank you. You save me a lot of money, and headache. Last time someone one came and charged me an arm and a leg. Thanks.
YOU'RE AWESOME!!!!! BEEN SHOWERING AT MY NEIGHBORS FOR LIKE THE LAST MONTH!!!! TODAY I FINALLY SHOWERED IN MY HOUSE!!!
Wtf lol😂
hell na😂
No mames
Your video just saved my neighbors garage from flooding lol I had to turn it all off for them they were not home
Man i had to take a cold shower tonight. Thanks for your video as it gave me the confidence to go and relight my water heater safely.
Thanks! Our pilot light went out and I followed the instructions that are printed on the side over and over. Then I watched your video which confirmed I was doing it right. Very helpful!! Seeing someone do it was much easier to follow than just reading directions :)
Sometimes the directions are clear as mud when reading them.

Your tutorial just made me look like the hometown hero! Thanks for your help.
Thank you! The only little thing that would have helped was to show the arrow on the shutdown knob but I think I got it. Thanks so much!
Thanks for UA-cam,months ago i paid $50 for someone to come turn it on,this time i did it myself thanks to this video
Thanks for the great video. I changed out a gas line at my aunt's house, and we had to shut the gas off at the meter. I had no idea how to light the pilot. I was used to the old school type where you stick the long match in there and light the pilot. Thanks a million.
Great tutorial. Extremely informative and helpful.

Thanks for the video I was able to turn on my water heater safely.
Thanks Bro!!
You just saved me from shower'n in ice water for the weekend!!
Your instruction is so helpful. Thanks! Good video!
You just got my hot water back on.THANK YOU!
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It was a great expliation and very easy to follow. You saved me a about $80 - Thank you kind sir!!!!
Thank you for this :) new homeowner and had no hot water!

Best video on UA-cam right to the point
That was very clear and simple. Thank you !!
Fantastic! helpful observation..I couldn't see the pilot then I used my phone's camera. perfect!
THIS VIDEO WAS THE ONE! THNKS
yes thanks , it was helpful. I have an older model with igniter is a separate piece attached to the side
Excellent Video!!. Thank you so much! My Boiler fixed and started again! :))
Great video. I was able to turn my boiler back on 'cause of you.
What does it mean when the flame just keeps tuning off and won’t stay on??
You said its fixed unit, if I want to clean the thermocouple, I could take it off right??
Started the heater...Thumbs Up.
Thanks your demonstration helped out.
Excellent video mines ddnt ignite but now im sure its something that i cant fix and i just have to call a service thank you for the vid once mines fixed if it goes out and its minor ill know what to do

It's also not supposed to go uphill, was like this when purchased.
Mine was a little more stubborn than yours...took a few more clicks/trys but it finally lit....THANKS
Some of them are really stubborn, on those you can use an electronic sparker inline with the wire, works 1000% better.
How do you periodically “exercise” the T&P valve? What do you mean by “exercise”? Are we suppose to flip it up and down or something?
And why is thus necessary?
Yes, exercising the valve with the handle opens the valve to flush any contamination/buildup from the valve and ensures that it's not stuck.
Thank you, i was able to reset my water heater
There is an air filter on the bottom right of the water heater that needs to be cleaned as well.
Are all water heaters similar with one and off and the gas? I have a rheem water heater

Best one on youtube thanks!

Why does my promax cause a high pitch whistle when we use shower??
A huge Thank You -

I just installed a AO Smith water heater model GNR 50 yesterday. The manual said the anode need to be replaced after a few years, but I could find where the anode port is located. Do you happen to know?
They are usually located in a plug on the top of the heater, some are built into the water pipe connection on the top of the heater.
If nothing else, you can shut off all your gas service at the meter. Just remember, the gas has to be ON for the heater to light.
Do you have any videos as to how to replace the pilot assembly for this type of water heater?

i have same exact water heater and my pilot will not light at all...any suggestions?
thank yooooouuu u saved my money
Thankz man helped a lot
Thanks for the instructions.
There is no green switch for burner light on my pro max . how to light?
I have a sealed unit but it won't light, I think the gas line is shut, but I can't find the valve on the iron pipe to turn it on, what should I do?
Thanks!
Why do you need to get water out every 6 months??
thank you for this!!
thank you
What happens if you keep press and it doenst turn on? do you know what is broken?
Can be a few things, hope you got it fixed 6yrs ago ;)
How do you change the thermocouple on this model. Because i have the exact model you have.
I have the same ignition as the one in this video. Around this time of year (the spring) the pilot light keeps going out. every day I'll have to ignite the water heater. Any ideas to the problem? Thanks a lot....
This is very helpful but my water heater still don't want to light
Exelente, gracias!!
ty for the help video
Will the flame eventually go out once it reaches a certain temperature?
The main burner flame will go out when it reaches the set temperature, but the pilot light is supposed to be lit all of the time.
My gas valve is the same like this and the knob on top is broken. I need help to find a replacement knob. Valve model number is AO Smith 37C73U-640

Gracias lo entendi y pude prender mi boiler tks. ;)
Thanks dude
Help... I am following your steps but not getting a spark.. I hold down the pilot light button but not seeing a flame through the window
The spark can be really hard to see. When they are really stubborn I use an electronic sparker igniter inline with the wire.

What happens if as soon as you crank it up it fires out of control
Then turns off??
If you are following the directions on your heater and that happens, then it's probably time to get it checked out by a professional.
Thank you Much!
Sir I light mines and it comes on for 2 minutes and then died again. I did it twice and did the same thing. Why?? Why it keep dying?? Please help??
Sounds like a problem with the thermocouple or the control valve. Probably want to contact a professional for that one.
My water heater ( identical) keeps shutting off da piolet every week or soo. Any ideas
thank man i was about to call ppl now it turn on
so how do u know if the t/p valve is leaking? I hope u didn't pay a licensed contractor to install this tank
It would be dripping out of the pipe outside. Yes it shouldn't be installed this way, was that way when purchased.
hey 710candlewood can you help me? My water heater looks exactly like yours, but Im having problems..I keep having to relight the pilot after about 20 min... Thanks sooo much deserve a subscribe
+710candlewood.....when I take my finger off the gas button after igniting the pilot, the pilot light goes out. What could be the problem?

Flaco Urrutia ?
Old reply, but you hold the gas button for a little while to really heat up the thermocouple, if after holding it for a while it still goes out, then it's a problem with the thermocouple, the control valve, or the wiring between the two.
