The song now carries a double meaning. Originally, the song was written about a failed relationship that Corey had, he never said who it was but some say it’s his ex wife. When writing the song, Corey didn’t want it to be included on a Slipknot album, he didn’t think it was good enough. Paul Gray, their bassist loved the song and really pushed for the song to make it on the album. Paul unfortunately passed away not long after so the song is special in that it’s a sad love song and a song to remember Paul.
Joey was also closely involved in finishing and pushing for it to be on the album. There's a reason why they played it for the first time in over a decade on the tour just after Joey died.
I maybe wrong but i remember CT saying in a interview him and Paul wrote this as a scrap song on his kitchen. Imagine that pure heartache together 👌🏾👌🏾
Just to add to this, there's been a few cases of Corey starting to play this song then having to restart because he's been unable to hold back the tears enough to be able to sing. This was even before Joey passed
@@Doot_Hunter For sure mate, I just chucked the image link in my About in my bio. Wasn't sure if you're allowed to link to other sites here. So it's the top one (obviously) referring to the death of hope, with death actually completing the word hope holding a letter with a lip imprint in reference to the second verse.
"Snuff" was created in 2008 and then use by Slipknot to pay tribute to Paul Gray (bass player) who died in 2010. This is why Corey is so emotional during this interpretation.
5:58 on the album version Corey belts out a long note right here. Clearly in this version he's too choked up to hit it, and ends up doing a shorter one, but you can hear in the background one guy in the crowd ABSOLUTELY NAIL IT
I love how the whole tone of the song changes with the line "But all of that was ripped apart when you refused to fight". Up till that point he's the bad guy of the relationship. She's too good for him, if you love him let him go, if he's alone he cannot hate, but then she does leave and all of a sudden she's the bad guy now. The whole focus changes to everything she should've done to save the relationship, and him. It's such a good representation of a toxic relationship and the anger that comes out on the refused to fight line hits hard every time.
One of my favorite Corey Taylor songs is the one he did with Dave grohl. It's called "from can to can't". Consider it 😉. I think it shows his range pretty well
Slipknot (and thus Corey) really hits a special point on me. From the very fist time I heard them, when I was in highschool, I got instantly hooked. And no matter if it's a super heavy or soft song, I just get goosebumps anytime I close my eyes an try to follow the lyrics. I guess most people has had a broken heart at least once. I'm no exception. this song... I remember hearing it for the first time, by accident, right after breaking up with my first girlfriend and feeling REALLY hurt. This song is really profound to me for that reason. Like... It brings me back to a dark past but it's also beautiful and I enjoy it a lot. So... It's sort of like a massochistic experience for me to listen to Snuff. A guilty pleasure, one might say, that has to be carefully dosed or else it can pretty much bring me down.
This isnt my 1st time seeing this.. I just love the way this song touches you emotionally before youre "pausing" it to calm yourself down (: really nice reaction, love it!
I do hope people are also mentioning his other band Stone Sour as well. Although I believe I read that for now at least the band is disbanded. They still have an excellent catalog of music too!!! 😉❤✌
As for easing into things, it's sonically pretty similar to Snuff but Cory's cover of Wicked Game (live House of Blues 2015) is another 'baby step' . Before ramping up to Slipknot, Stone Sour's Absolute Zero would be my enthusiastic suggestion.
First slipknot I always recommend is phycosocial because I like seeing the reaction when he switches from his screaming to his singing, always catches people out
Well done, Teach. It looked like you were getting a little choked up there in the second verse. I like how he pulled out the rasp to emphasize the mood of the song.
I was in a metal band about 9 million years ago and our singer said when he scrunched up his nose it was to bring the sound forward and it let him use tension without putting the tension in his throat where he didn't want it. I'm not a singer but that is the best I can tell you. Hopefully someone else has a better way to describe it. Great reaction as always. Metal has always been overlooked as just screaming and making angry sounds but there is so much more to metal.
“Tastefully” was the word I think you were looking for. Such a moving song and some heartfelt lyrics. Always makes me tear up. Great reaction and a start into your descent into Slipknot.
Im watching a couple of you know vocalyst, analysts but i got to tell, it`s great to see someone tearing for the joy or feeling the pain of the singer...You are emotional and it`s great, love to see while analysing, you are still a human. Keep it up girl.
omg this was the exact performance i was talking about on the queensryche video. im so happy you caught this, this is the literal song that came to mind when posting it.
subtitles always seem to find some random word change, kind of like voice-to-text. I wish on this you could turn them off, but they are in her video. Us fans love this song enough to know the lyrics.
Slipknot is definitely worth giving a listen to, they are technically very good and the energy and emotion can't be denied, but it clearly isn't for everyone. Corey is also in a slightly lesser known band called Stone Sour, which still has that edginess but is maybe a little bit easier to get into if you aren't used to such harsh metal. Fantastic reaction though, looking forward to seeing more :)
Slipknot - "Vermillion 1" "Vermillion 2" and "Killpop" Stone Sour - "Bother" "Through Glass" "Sillyworld" "Zzyzx Rd." and "Song #3" All more "chill" songs that are a good ease into the genre and you're vary likely to enjoy.
Such a powerful song, in my eyes the best song Slipknot have made thus far in their career. And this performance, just Corey with his guitar and feelings coming through makes it even heavier. There is one song I've not seen much around in the "reaction section", an old classic heavy metal ballad I love.. Manowar's "Master of the Wind". (I'd recommend "studio" audio, as most of the live versions out there aren't the best quality)
corey taylor is one of my all time favorite vocalists so many different techniques and tones he uses to show different emotions. need to checkout slipknot stone sour and corey's solo stuff
This song has some of the heaviest lyrics I have ever heard in regards to a breakup. I met a guy last week who after his four year relationship broke up, he couldn't listen to this song without crying for six months. I just broke up with my 23-year long soulmate... I have a long ways to go. 😭
I believe you should check out their track "People = Shit", a live video. This band is insane and actually has a lot of variety on their albums (rapping, harsh vocals, growls, clean singing, mixed voice, etc). They formed in 1995 and had some members leave and join, but since 1999 it's been a pretty consistent lineup of 9 guys.
At the end his slight changes of placement is to help him optimize more projection & sound with the mouth shapes you mentioned . The Vocal coach he uses is/was an Opera Singer.
Always liked him in slipknot and stone sour but....After seeing him live in Brisbane in 2023... his voice is absolutely amazing one of the best beside Dave ghrol in my opinion
You HAVE To react to Devin Townsend. His solo performance doing Kingdom at EMGTV is a classic, but Deadhead at PlovDiv is my favorite (though that song at Royal Albert Hall gets most of the reactions)
A fairly good representation of Slipknot would be 'The Devil in I', but for a reaction, the live version video from Knotfest 2014 might be the best option. The music video is far too distracting, but the live performance is astounding. Keep up the good work!
if you want more vocal corey you should have a listen to Song#3 stone sour acoustic version it really lets his vocal side sing in his belting abilities...
I am kind of like you, slipknot is far from my normal style. But this one is so deep and relatable that it works. It's also great to hear metal singers that can back it off and make something more melodic. You can still hear some harsher distortion, but it adds to the more clean sound, and for this song in particular adds to that emotion behind it.
I just fairly recently "discovered" Slipknot. Psychosocial was my gateway song. Some would also say Duality and Unsainted are good next steps. Fyi, don't get used to seeing Corey's face...
Don't worry man my gateway into slipknot was also Psychosocial. Listen to Iowa album if you haven't already also before I forget that is a good song as well. Enjoy friend!
Since I couldn't find another song you reacted to from Slipknot yet, I'd like to make a suggestion. Obviously, most of Slipknot's catalog is vastly different than this song, but a good introduction to them in my opinion is Dead Memories. It really features Corey's vocals in a way that is similar to this song. After that, the ones I recommend most would be as follows: Psychosocial, The Devil In I, Before I Forget, and Wait and Bleed.
If I could make a suggestion, have a look at a singer named Skin. Mostly known for her work with Skunk Ananzi, but she also performed a song with Sevendust. I believe it was called Licking Cream
This has to be the most painful breakup song of all time, seriously. I'm almost 40 and this instantly hits home to the girl I wanted to spend my life with when I was 19. She refused to fight and gave up over something so small. God it hurts every time.
We can see your emotion on this - this is such an amazing song for people to relate to and it hits everyone right in the heart. Slipknot is very different than this but Corey is awesome!
I think that the little snarl helps you brain focus on something other than the sustained pitch. If you have not done so already, I would love to hear your opinion on the live version of Staind "Something to remind you". It is another stripped down performance like this.
I would suggest you watch the music videos for Slipknot - Duality, then Psychosocial and then The Devil In I. I think that would be a good introduction to Slipknot.
If you want to hear Cory Tayler's voice without so much background noise you should try From Can To Can't. There are some legends playing the music, but his voice is beautiful in this song!
I loved this reaction. Everyone associates Corey with just hardcore metal screaming. Then they see this, and realise the true scale of this man's talent.
Then they find stone sour and are like oh shit lol I love how much raw emotion Corey packs into these sadder songs like this and stone sour songs like so many of those tracks are absolute masterpieces i'd heard some as a kid and never had any clue he was the same person as Slipknot

One of the most poignant lyrics I've ever encountered: "It took the death of hope to let you go". Such a great line.
