He meant emotionally heavy. The song is not about Paul Gray, their bass player who died, but it kind of emotionally became connected to him. That's why Corey is almost in tears. Great video! Corey is just an incredible talent. Hope to see more of him on the channel! 😃
@@WillJM81280 it's about his ex wife, and in the ending where he says "it took the death of him to let you go" he's talking about how to let his wife go he had to get caught up with pauls death
The emotion in his voice is so genuine. This was the last single the band released before the death of their original bassist, Paul Grey, and Corey performs this solo acoustic version in tribute to him as they were very close friends
@@tosuismyu he didn't. Corey wrote it after the breakup/divorce of his ex, but didn't really want the song to "be out there". It was more a way for him to just deal with it at the time, but Paul read it and convinced Corey to record the vocals. Then after Corey left, Paul and Joey put the music on the track.. Corey heard the result the next day and just started crying. But Paul is also the one who convinced Corey to put the song on the album if I remember the interview with Corey correctly.
I was lucky enough to attend this exact show in 2016. Being in the crowd for this song was a real trip. Corey's an amazing vocalist who projects some serious emotion in his performances
I knew Corey pretty well back in the 90's. He was a great singer before he became a great 'screamer', although he was rock/metal vocalist back then too. Not saying he was a bad screamer, he just hadn't honed it to slipknot level yet. I think he is just a naturally gifted really good singer and a really cool guy to match. Was always a blast to be around and he lived, sleeped and ate rock & metal. His craft was his entire existence. I've seen people try to call him a fake online. Trust me he's legit.
Technically he wasn't a 'good' screamer back then. There's a reason he doesn't scream like he did on Iowa any more. It sounds amazing, but It's not sustainable and rips your throat to shreds. It's not healthy. Later on he developed a healthy fry.
Beth, I couldn’t agree more with you about rock/metal singers being able to create incredible ballads or emotional versions of their songs. Chester Bennington with the acapela version of Crawling which is a masterpiece; Extreme with More than Words; Chris Cornell with his version of Billie Jean; Prince with Purple Rain; Queen and Love of my life; Metallica with Unforgiven; Bruce Dickinson with Tears of the Dragon and many others!

Death, the quintessential Death Metal act not to mention a founding father of it, has one of the most sublime instrumental tracks with Voice of the Soul . And they didn't go "full soft" to get emotional, it's distorted and raw and searing Plus plenty of examples of heavy songs being reworked to fit the "unplugged" type rendition, adapted with acoustics or different tones; added melodies; etc

Corey may be one of the top 5 vocalists around today. He does screaming like few others, has unbelievable control of his distortion (as is plainly evident in this performance), and can rock out with the best of them (as his Stone Sour performances can attest). He may not have the greatest range, or the silkiest tones, or do any one thing the best. But he can do it all as good as the best. The guy is almost unique, especially since Chris Cornell and Chester are gone. Few others besides those two can be as great at multiple styles as Corey is.
One of my favorite Slipknot songs, and hearing Corey sing it in a stripped down manner is just beautiful. You hear the pain in his voice, and that's what makes it so haunting. Corey has that ability to inspire emotion in you when you hear him sing. Thanks for listening to this one. Iowa Represent!
I know its a late comment. Right neck tattoo means Father and left neck tattoo means Death. For me the line "it took the death of hope to let you go" is so powerful and makes me want to cry.

Finally, thank you. This song basically saved my life after I left my fiancee. It was a terrible break-up right about the time the song came out and just knowing someone else out there felt the same way was somehow comforting even though it's so sad it really helped. Now it brings up all the sadness, anger, tears everytime I hear it but it's like it imprinted on my soul. If souls had songs this would be mine.
The thing that gets me about this performance is towards the end when he does the wail, you can hear the audience do it right in time to when it would be on the album, but Corey hadn't managed to get his composure back together by that point. And you can hear it in his voice when he steps back up to do the wail. That crowd was just amazing and it really is a part of the performance. You can feel the whole room as one being for this song.

I’ve seen him live several times in Slipknot and also in Stone Sour. Check out his version of “Wicked Game” recorded with his other band Stone Sour. I promise you won’t be disappointed 👌
How CMFT can sing the way he does in both songs like this and everything he does with slipknot after smoking cigarettes heavily since he was like 11 or something is truly incredible. The lung compactly issue alone is enough to cripple a singer. The man is super human. Cigarettes make you get a great “gravelly” distorted sound but I’m sure you’d agree it’s one of the worst habits for a singer to have, or a human for that matter. Hi Beth. Great you are more into metal now. You will find most metal fans get into it due to the emotional connection and the subject matter tends to lend itself to it. I got into it after years of singing in a church choir and both music forms still inspire and move me. Snuff I believe was an autobiographical song about Corey's ex wife/girlfriend and so the the emotion is all genuine. If I am wrong, please put me straight on the facts.

There are two really great covers Corey has done that I think you would really enjoy. He covers Hunger Strike with Halestorm and Man in the Box with Dave Navarro, Taylor Hawkins, and Chris Chaney. They were absolutely amazing!
Originally, this was written about an ugly divorce he went through. It is about a co-dependent love that becomes such an obsession that no matter how they treated him, if they ever gave him another inkling of hope, he would take them back in an instant. He did the acoustic version as a tribute to the late Paul Gray, but the song is not written about or for him.
"If you still care don't ever let me know" - one of the most devastatingly emotional lyrics of all time
Its a heavy song, maybe not loud heavy, but its dark, heavy on the heart.
" I only wish you werent my friend. then i could hurt you in the end.'' gets me every time

Demon Hunter covered "Down in a Hole"? I have to check this out. Haven't stayed in touch with DH since 2010 or so.
Sweet I'll check out that cover too.
I'm so in love with the MTV Unplugged AIC version of this song, I think it's way better than the album version, it's so raw and emotive which is weird seeing how Layne was off his tits at the time
Corey is a vocal beast 🤘 He has said if it wasn't for Paul Gray pushing him, he wouldn't have released this. Rip Paul and now Joey 🤘 Maggot Corps forever🤘🤘
I was looking at your intro drawing and went "Rawr" out loud the EXACT time it went rawr😂😂 We def think similar lol
Omg I been waiting for this one so bad
What amazes me is that she spends the entire performance trying to understand that the whole thing isn't based on anything but pure emotion.
Such a great show. He does several covers. Including SpongeBob Square pants theme lol.
what a song and what a reaction!
There are two really great covers Corey has done that I think you would really enjoy. He covers Hunger Strike with Halestorm and Man in the Box with Dave Navarro, Taylor Hawkins, and Chris Chaney. They were absolutely amazing!
He slayed Love Gun too. Stone Sour made KISS look like a pile of crap on their own song lol
He did a version of Princes purple rain that was amazing as well. Just found ur channel really enjoying it!
This is not a song. It’s a feeling.
i just googled his neck tattoo and got this answer :3
Neck - the number eight, representing his number in the band Slipknot.
