      It is yes. Only the alternator brackets and the PCV outlets were different. This generation got an earlier version of the same factory turbocharger but they’re perfectly interchangeable and hard to tell them apart with the system assembled.

    It's wonderful to see a classic being restored, instead of rotting away. Thank you for saving this car!
    I remember my ST165 from almost 20 years ago... The previous owner disconnected the wastegate, so it would overboost like mad! Yeah, that nuked the engine...
    So, I contacted a shop nearby and a CS (Carlos Sainz) ST185 engine was put in its place. That thing was an absolute riot!!!
    At present my daily driver is a GR Corolla, but my first experience with Toyota AWD goodness was that ST165 all those years ago, and I will say that Toyota knows the formula to make fantastic rally cars.

    • @JustDriven
      @JustDriven  17 днів тому +1

      Heck yah! We love our GR Corolla. Is that how you found our channel? Was it the GR or this Celica? We've been sidetracked with some unexpected projects but we are excited for the build to continue.

    • @not12listen
      @not12listen 17 днів тому

      @@JustDriven I found your channel via the GR Corolla. Finding the AllTrac Celica was purely icing on the cake. :)
      I will say after having driven my previous ST165 for several years, with quite a bit of canyon driving, and driving my GR Corolla for the past 9 months, the differences are very obvious between the 2 cars.
      None of this is to say that that ST165 is bad/poor at all, as every platform has to start somewhere, and the ST165 was Toyota's first AWD rally car. The significant front weight bias is very noticeable if you're going through the twisty bits and you're not on the throttle - the ST165 was commented as being a 'lead tipped arrow' and that description is spot-on. Though, when you're on throttle, the steering and front end response is so different that it almost feels like a different car.
      The GR Corolla, despite having a very similar curb weight, feels incredibly nimble no matter if you're on or off throttle.
      The way that each car pulls out of turns is pretty different though. The GR Corolla is more stable, and has more overall traction pulling forward (I have the Premium with front and rear Torsen LSDs), whereas the Celica felt like it had solid traction due to the greater front end weight - that is to say that it's easier to chirp tires on the AllTrac Celica (open front and rear diffs).
      Brakes - GR Corolla wins and it's not even remotely close.
      Suspension - Well, nearly 40 years will have a huge impact, as expected. The GR Corolla transitions from turn to turn with absolute ease, whereas the Celica has/had significant body roll and wallowed side to side like a lumbering giant before the change of direction was really committed. 40 years of chassis design also comes into play, and the Celica simply didn't have the rigidity that the GR Corolla does.
      Power delivery - Despite the AllTrac Celica only pushing 7psi, you had power from 2500rpm all the way up to the 7200rpm (power tapered off above 6500rpm). With the exhaust runners being as short as they are on the 3SGTE, engine/throttle response was really good (not NA good, but good for a turbo'd engine). The GR Corolla is just a beast with 25psi though, and the engine/throttle response is almost NA good, which is incredibly impressive. I've never pushed my GR Corolla up near redline, so I cannot comment on it's power delivery that high up in the RPM range.
      Transmission/gearing - The AllTrac Celica wins this one. It might feel 'clunky' compared to the GR Corolla gear box, but when 3rd gear tops out around 95mph... And you still have 2 more gears to go... That is pure bliss! By comparison, the GR Corolla is clearly not geared even remotely the same way - it's more about raw acceleration and rowing your gears a bit more, basically like the gear ratios were intended for a technical track VS doing higher speed runs on wide open roads. The GR Corolla wins in terms of having a (stock) shorter throw shifter assembly, and the 6th gear is something I really enjoy having.
      Turning wrenches - The AllTrac Celica was a lot easier to work on in almost every way. The exception being if you need to replace the clutch or flywheel - what a nightmare! Having to pull the engine, and then twist it to clear the transfer case, and neither the engine or transmission was 'lightweight' by any means. I'll happily change out a clutch and flywheel on my former AW11 with the C52 gearbox on my chest (to get it out of the way) before doing the same job with a transmission jack or hoist on the AllTrac Celica.
      Aftermarket support - Despite its age, the GR Corolla easily wins this one. Sadly, the ST165 just didn't get much support. Sure, you could pull stuff from the ST185 or maybe the ST205, but even those simply lack the same support that the GR Corolla already has.
      Anywho... Sorry for the ramble. :)

      After reading this comment something is very clear to us: you are simply OUR kind of people. There's plenty of wonderful things to say about both cars and we love how you've been able to find positive things to report on both.

      @@JustDriven Thank you for that. :) I can find shortcoming in every vehicle, but I try to be reasonable/realistic, especially taking into account when the vehicle was available.
      I will give you fair warning... Asking about the AW11 is an extremely dangerous topic with me (19 years of ownership). :) To me it is a pinnacle car, and I especially love how it requires the driver to either already have OR develop the skill to drive it fast. My reply here about the GR Corolla and AllTrac Celica would be considered incredibly small compared to my responses regarding the AW11. :)
