I had this exact problem with my Touareg a couple of years ago, a little internet search and got it fixed doing the same thing. Crazy a bit a tape it "good enough" for these companies.
Thank you for making this extremely well detailed guide. We recently ran into this problem and it's insane how many car shops are unwilling to take this car in for repairs.
The little restriction on the end of the sunroof drain that looks like a whoopie cushion is there to prevent debris from backing up into the tube from below. Maintaining these drains is important, and that drain tube end should be replaced soonish.
I also thought it was to allow some water pressure to build up and then the flex end would open and let water flood through with some velocity, taking debris with it. Even if true this design obviously still requires some drain maintenance. Really, all cars do and many people don't realize it. It's also a much bigger issue on cars parked outside.
If you have the skills to easily deal with electrical problems than this car is a good deal. I think the dealers did good, selling this car for $900. If you are someone who values reliability than you wouldn't want to touch this car with a 10 foot pole.
Water-logging is a tradition at Volkswagen Porsche. My 1971 Karmann Ghia was so bad that I drilled holes in the floor pan to get rid of the water. No kidding.
Had one with the same issue , but we never found out where the water came into the car on both sides, checked the drains even had the windscreen replaced, water would enter on both sides if you put a hose over the windscreen. But dosent matter it started to have a ticking problem from the engine,so that was that ,no more prosche to expensive to fix.
In the late 1980’s I traded a Pentax 35mm camera that I had bought for $200 for Audi sedan , engine ran ok but the transmission wouldn’t shift , windshield wipers wouldn’t work and under the hood you could hear a loud whistling sound. I drove it home slowly because the brakes were almost non existent…. Replaced a couple cracked Vacuum lines and voila EVERYTHING magically worked…. Another time I bought a Norton 850 commando for next to nothing every time you revved the engine it leaked oil everywhere, the previous owned tried dressing up the engine by replacing all the external high pressure oil lines with some really nice looking fuel line …. The gas line couldn’t seal at the fittings no matter how tight you made the ace hardware hose clamps …again replaced the hoses and clamps with required parts ,worked like a champ..
Just to prove that I am just another mortal, the clutch in the Norton started slipping so I bought a rebuild kit, after reassembling the clutch would never disengage so not having time to troubleshoot it I sold it to a friend who was a Mechanic, the next day he drove the bike over to ask me what Tork setting I used….oops

Bought a new harness, replaced all the rubber and plastic, $140,000.00 truck for $39,000. What caused it? Someone ran hot wire battery direct, but zip tied it to the harness with no fuse. It ran to the dispatch radio in the cab. Ouch
I had this issue on an e90 bmw sunroof. I used a bicycle pump and hooked it to the top drain ports with rubber grommets. Thru boiling water down the drain and pumped the pump. The air pressure was gentle enough to blow out all the crud..
I love that there is no car brand bashing that is toxic all over the internet and that Sam looks at this quite objectively, i'd personally have a hard time selling these things that i'd revived personally.
You can use those connectors that you just hit with your lighter and then they close up around the wire and give you a waterproof connection and you should do that for each of the wires

@@russellhayden82 - Yeah, but sometimes you can't avoid them. If you want a nice luxury car, most of them have these stupid things. I can't stand them either. The one on my Mercedes never gets opened and I always leave the cover closed.
@russellhayden82 My last car was a 2001 Mitsubishi Verada with a sunroof. It was an old bomb but none of its problems had to do with the sunroof Current is a 2007 Jaguar X type, and I've had no problems with the sunroof so far except the inside cover doesn't get automatically grabbed and pulled by it when closing My brother has a Skoda Octavia, 2016 I think, with a sunroof, and water gets in it and leaks through the inside of the body
I like to pour a little water in the sunroof drains and push it through with the air compressor. Its part of my oil change maintenance. Interior water destroys a bunch of different vehicles. Gm had lots of issues also with the Acadia other mid-sized SUVs. Nice work 👌🏼
There was a channel from a Porsche technician and in one episode he did the same on a Cayenne de difference is that he had to solder all the wires from the passinger side becouse they were all corrode, at the end he clened all the drains from the sunfoof and from bottom of the front windshield where it was compleated clogged fron leaves.
VW Group (Audi, Porsche, Bentley, etc...) continues making low quality junk and Sam continues figuring things out better than VW engineers. This is WIN-WIN for all 💯 👍
I had a 2006 Touareg that had the exact same issue and performed the fix myself by looking up the issues on UA-cam. cleaned drains in the wheel well and the driver side running board and soldered that one wire back together and had no more issues. They also have an issue with the Center Drive Shaft bearing where the rubber around the bearing disintegrates. There's a fix for that too where you use heater hose, which works very well.
Just taking a moment to absorb the fact that Porsche consider twisting wires together, which are critical to the operation of the vehicle and wrapping a bit of tape around them is a level of build quality worth the tens of thousands of dollars they ask for these cars?!?!😢
If it is like my Q7 (and it looks it) It is not the sunroof drain but the cowl drain from the bottom of the windshield , it gets blocked with leaves and water overflows into the car from every hole. Turn the steering to full lock and remove the corner of the wheel liner , remember to do both sides
My daily driver is a 2001 Lexus RX300 ( 326K miles ). With a sunroof I open everytime I drive it if it isn't raining. Besides regular maintenance like oil, other fluids, batteries, wiper blades, brakes, belts, hoses, tires and the 100K whammy maintenance $1344 ( did it at 90K) timing belt, tune-up, and flushes. I've had to replace the engine computer (PCM/ECU $1,100) and front and rear control arm ball joint tie rods and sway bar link kit ($490) but original shocks. Really besides that it's been 23+ year's without problems. I know there's many examples of great results from long term ownership of various makes and models but none....none are reported by Porsche owner's. I paid 30K for the car new for my wife. Bought her a 2017 Lexus RX350 with 4,300 miles for 54,887 back in fall of 2017. Hoping to have as good performance out of this one.
16:30 Invest in a u-shape crimper tool and some crimps. Then use a weatherproof shrink sleeve. They are so cheap. I think I got my crimper for 8 bucks and 100 crimps for 2 dollars. Crimps make a better and quicker connection.
Sam - I am so impressed with the results of your instincts and knowledge coming together to resurrect this Cayenne. Amazed at the SHODDY workmanship out of Stuttgart . . . disgraceful! Really enjoyed your total lack of hesitation in getting dirty . . . but clearly your efforts will yield a very tiddy profit! Well done!!
The second drain you found up behind the wheel arch liner is not the sun roof drain, it is the drain for the plenum chamber, a very well known issue for Touareg owners! Just throw the rubber tit thing away on both sides, but also check the cabin air filter is dry. Place a gently running hosepipe at the base of the screen and you should see water running out from the wheel arch drainage holes on each side of the car. The rockers or sllls below the doors also fill with water. No one knows how by the way! There are, from memory, three rubber grommets in each sill. Park the car on a slope and then remove the lowest of the grommets and any retained water will run out. And Touareg is pronounced with a long A as in Twaah-reg!!
Not the same but similarly, I was 18-19 and bought a Toyota MR2 for $500 because the guy thought it was toast after the "engine caught fire"... the alternator burned up and melted the belt off and it sat for a year... I paid him, drop a battery in and drove it home... all it needed was the alternator and belt. He was so mad. Man that car was fun to drive.
20:30 not air suspension. Standard 957 Cayenne S coil spring. Not bad but not air ride. Air ride is a mirrored toggle next to the Transfercase selector on the center console
Sam I dealt with a very similar water intrusion issue on my Carrera cabriolet. It rusted out the whole passenger side floorboard. Wrecked the immobilizer too. So I taught myself how read a volt meter and weld and I fixed it myself on my channel. See you at Wrenchwerx!

great find and easy fix....it just goes to show that not all problems are difficult to solve and just take a little know how and common sense...(what many mechanics now lack!)
My 06 GTO died with no power and needed a flat bed. The Tow truck operator would not tow it if it doesn’t get out of park. So he found the neutal switch under the front of the shift boot with a flat headed screwdriver. And popped it out of park. I now need a new boot and the handle has to be pressed down hard to engage the transmission. But I got it to the shop and the car was repaired. Good to know where that switch is at if your car comes completely electrically dead.😊
Hi! Auto auction employee here. So for some context to the personal information in cars, Yes. We find your stuff all the time. From personal items/info to wierd items and trash, When these cars come into our auction, and we check them into our system, if we spot anything like registrations and such when we look for things like manuals and what not, We collect those and any other personal documents, and they get placed into a slotted trash can which is locked, we have a 3rd party company that comes and collects the cans bi-weekly and shreds and disposes of the personal info properly. So TL;DR / Summary, If you forget to remove your personal info when trading in your car, we'll remove it for you at auction and dispose of it properly. 😁
Have exactly the same with a Mecedes A class from 2007. Water drain when clogged lets water through to the fuse box and battery compartment. Exactly the same kind of plug.
That is a deal! I am amazed at how terrible the electrical is on these. I have torn a lot of cars apart trying to trace down wiring issues and never saw such bad work right out of the factory. I understand they do not expect the interior to get that much water etc but I have vacuumed a lot of water out of cars because someone forgot to roll a window up or left the sunroof opened partially opened and it poured out but none had issues like this where the wires shorted or actually corroded away and I live in the north east. Truthfully if I was lucky enough to get this 2008ish Cayenne for that price I would cut and reconnect all the splices that are just taped, solder them, cover them with heat shrink tubing and use the liquid wire insulation over that to seal it all up nice just in case.
My '01 Jetta had a recall on the drain tube openings. Basically they designed the openings of the drain tubes to the exterior of the car with those little pinches to prevent bugs and debris from plugging it up. Little did they know or think about with the fact that any of the soot from the roof that washes into the sunroof tray will inevitably plug that up pretty quick. The dealer fix was to just cut off the pinch on that nipple and leave it open. I would suggest doing that even though I assume later in the video you already put it back together
I had a similar issue with an old Mercury Mountaineer. The windshield had a bad seal, letting a bit of water in, which became a bugbear of issues. Eventually we gave up on it.
You need to place a dehumidifier in that car for a few days to extract the water from the carpet and foam backing. Otherwise, it will stay stagnant and start smelling moldy. Other option is complete remove the carpet and foam backing and let is air dry a few days.
Porsche drains always clog. I just found my drain on my GT3 in the front compartment on the passenger side next to the battery was completely clogged and the whole area was filled with water. No water actually inside the fronk carpeted area or the inside of the car. Luckily I found it before any real damage.
Hey Sam! As I'm a Land Rover enthusiast, I thoroughly enjoy your video content on other car models and your troubleshooting process. Cheers from the UK!
Short version: Snake your drains regularly! (A 10 foot coil snake with bottlebrush on the end is about $2 and they'll run right down into the wheel arch cavity

It's virtually the same thing that causes issues on Land Rover LR3s. The taped splice commonly knocks out the remote lock/unlock from the key fob. The stupid flapper end on the drain line even looks the same. Pretty common to just remove the flapper end and use a push connector to add a chunk of hose and put it out the hole. Sad that not having a sunroof would cure so many issues on these high end SUVs.
I have a 2006 cayenne s، one day the ignition switch warning came on , i found online it's related to a red/brown wire fixed that issue which was originally caused by the AC drain begin clogged. Still runs like a charm. I had vehicles before that i will never buy again but the Cayenne isn't one of them for sure

It's more for insects.
Infiniti got that issue too
I also thought it was to allow some water pressure to build up and then the flex end would open and let water flood through with some velocity, taking debris with it. Even if true this design obviously still requires some drain maintenance. Really, all cars do and many people don't realize it. It's also a much bigger issue on cars parked outside.
@@kevin9c1 If so, that's crazy. You won't get any kind of velocity out of that small of a tube.
@@muskokamike127 Well you'll get more than drips.
You're so talented, don't stop creating content!
This is one of many best videos u have done ! Love that! Such nice fault finding !
That intro was so on point, really loved it.
Much appreciated!

A buddy bought an F450 from the studios. The wiring harness caught caught fire and cooked pretty much everything under the hood. If It could melt it did. Bought a new harness, replaced all the rubber and plastic, $140,000.00 truck for $39,000. What caused it? Someone ran hot wire battery direct, but zip tied it to the harness with no fuse. It ran to the dispatch radio in the cab. Ouch
You've paid 700 bucks on a car that people were too LAZY to fix it... well done!
Its crazy these cars cost so much and have these issues. My honda never has these problems. Gets me to point A and B safetly for fraction of cost. Glad im simple
Sunroofs in general have always had problems. I always avoid any car with a sunroof
@@russellhayden82 - Yeah, but sometimes you can't avoid them. If you want a nice luxury car, most of them have these stupid things. I can't stand them either. The one on my Mercedes never gets opened and I always leave the cover closed.
@russellhayden82
My last car was a 2001 Mitsubishi Verada with a sunroof. It was an old bomb but none of its problems had to do with the sunroof
Current is a 2007 Jaguar X type, and I've had no problems with the sunroof so far except the inside cover doesn't get automatically grabbed and pulled by it when closing
My brother has a Skoda Octavia, 2016 I think, with a sunroof, and water gets in it and leaks through the inside of the body
When I worked at safelite we cleaned drains all the time. Fill the drain and then we used the compressed air longer style wand.
thank you for another banger video keep doing your thing Sam !
Thank you! Will do!
I like to pour a little water in the sunroof drains and push it through with the air compressor. Its part of my oil change maintenance. Interior water destroys a bunch of different vehicles. Gm had lots of issues also with the Acadia other mid-sized SUVs. Nice work 👌🏼
Good info and guidance in what to look for. Almost makes me want to gamble on an auction car.
This is WIN-WIN for all 💯 👍
Same for US cars...
18:20 your car suddenly turned into a right hand drive model 🧐
Camera flip
Look at 8:50 it's reversed as well. Use a mirror to read the paper.
I thought I was going nuts.
Only Sam can do it so quickly with a cable. 😂
@@charliemock4499 How can a camera flip change left to right. That definitely shows a right-hand drive, then its left. How can flip do that?
Just taking a moment to absorb the fact that Porsche consider twisting wires together, which are critical to the operation of the vehicle and wrapping a bit of tape around them is a level of build quality worth the tens of thousands of dollars they ask for these cars?!?!😢
Yes, kinda what I was thinking. See my earlier comment. Basically s**t electrics.
Maybe 'Porsche' is the noise the electrics make when they get wet and the magic smoke comes out

un bon achat pour une si petite reparation,félicitation!
If it is like my Q7 (and it looks it) It is not the sunroof drain but the cowl drain from the bottom of the windshield , it gets blocked with leaves and water overflows into the car from every hole. Turn the steering to full lock and remove the corner of the wheel liner , remember to do both sides
I love how you built your channel off this kind of thing and you've kept it oging
Excellent find. All your knowledge and expertise is paying off.
Love the Cayenne! Can’t wait to see the next video!
This is so nostalgic....had a first gen Turbo S. Sweet ride.
Thanks for posting these it encourages us DIY mechanics to find ways to fix what seems un fixable
It's funny how captioning thought you're saying tour eggs 😂
Nice to see Sam get a W!
16:30 Invest in a u-shape crimper tool and some crimps. Then use a weatherproof shrink sleeve. They are so cheap. I think I got my crimper for 8 bucks and 100 crimps for 2 dollars. Crimps make a better and quicker connection.
Stop flipping the frames. I thought this was a right hand drive for half the video. I was like, yeah it was $700 because it's RHD in Florida. 😂
Ikr???
At 00:37 seconds it's pretty clear the car is left hand drive.
@@andyleo8418agreed, OP just wanted a reason to complain lol
When I had a 02 gti they had a recall for those sunroof drains. There solution was to trim off the flap part leaving it wide open at all times.
@Samcrac Always waiting for your video!
You leave your documents in your trade-in car and then someone named Sam Crack buys it for $700
Not the same but similarly, I was 18-19 and bought a Toyota MR2 for $500 because the guy thought it was toast after the "engine caught fire"... the alternator burned up and melted the belt off and it sat for a year...

Did you buy two? One left hand drive and one right?! 😂 VidFlip
Yes, I had a similar wet floor problem with the clogged sunroof drain in my VW Passat GTE. But I caught it in time. The garage I bought it from fixed the problem under warranty.
Can someone please explain how the car suddenly became RHD around 18:00 ? Parts car maybe? I though at first that the image was just flipped/mirrored, but then realised it doesn't work that way...
Also noticed this. Before it was left hand now I see the steering on the right hand
The image is horizontally flipped. Look at the logo on Sam’s t shirt. It’s backwards

What you achieve without having to hoist the car and work underneath is amazing.
great find and easy fix....it just goes to show that not all problems are difficult to solve and just take a little know how and common sense...(what many mechanics now lack!)
Great job Sam! So satisfying to watch you fix cars. Almost like pimple popping lol. Keep up the great work.
Been watching your show for a while now, you should give a shout out to Steve Lehto, he really talks you up, on his show on UA-cam! I’m really happy for your win… I’m sure you’ll get at least six or 7000 if there’s nothing wrong with the engine… can’t wait for the next show!
Sam, you really know how to sort out issues. Kudos!
Score. There is still hope in this world for those able to fix things!
16:23 the red rings should be around the wire insulation it is what seals out air and moisture.
My 1986 944 turbo has the same issue. I guess some things never change.
i love the glue where the previous owner had just put tape in front of the check engine light.
Impressive how you converted it to a right-hand drive vehicle at 17:55 ! Then converted it back again.
Ivan of PHAD would be proud of your NPR repair. You did right to also address the root cause and prevent any repeat perfomances.
I have a 2006 cayenne s، one day the ignition switch warning came on , i found online it's related to a red/brown wire fixed that issue which was originally caused by the AC drain begin clogged.
Still runs like a charm.
I had vehicles before that i will never buy again but the Cayenne isn't one of them for sure
wow this is some impressive quality wires twisted and taped has to save them what 10 mins and what 20 bucks no wonder a porch costs so much the quality is outstanding
