Perhaps it won’t happen, but I always wondered how an XK would perform with a AJ16 - manual conversion, XK chassis and body, adding in the S/C AJ16? Excellent fun.

    • @simongroot7147
      @simongroot7147 Місяць тому +4

@@paulwilliams7816 No you cannot. The supercharger is already driven at 2.5 times crank speed, meaning at 5000 engine RPM it is already at the speed limit of the supercharger. At this speed the supercharger efficiency is falling dramatically. All it does is heat the air and consume more crankshaft power, the opposite of what you need. It is only a 90 cubic inch unit and a 4.0l engine stretches it right to the end of the performance envelope. The only way to make more power is a bigger unit. The V8 supercharger is 112 cubic inches displacement.

Anything is possible. I bought a Chevy Corvair engine (air cooled flat 6) which was pretty much the same. Had sat in the corner of a barn for 20 yrs. Wouldnt turn over by hand, had to split the nuts holding the heads on as it was winding out the head studs....and when i did get the heads off, it was full of sludge and corn....and then i whacked a main bearing seat drifting out a stuck piston 🙈🙈🙈
But she lived......and ran like a champ in my beach buggy. Anything is possible.

Plus a couple hundred quid on cam sprockets, pulleys, and other consumable items. All in all, you should be into that engine for less than 1500 pounds for parts, not including labor. For a relatively uncommon and potent straight six, that's not really too bad.

Greetings from Scotland! "Should we save this engine?" Absolutely! No cracks, no warps - it's going to need tlc and a rebore but it's such a sweet running bullet proof motor. This is going to be interesting to follow.

Irn Bru Toothpaste!! 😂😂😂 As both an old Irn Bru kid ( for real, I was an Irn Bru kid ! ) and an avid watcher of all things Drivetribe this cracked me up. You have to get that beast back to life and get it in something cool. Maybe an MGB raceish car to rival the cogs or a sleeper ? Thanks for the videos, they do brighten my days.

You can use the housing itself if you change all the insides including the cylinder lining.
There are not even a bolt you can reuse

The engine is saveable either rebore or changing the liners regrind the crank with some oversized shells new high-flow oil pump racing pistons port the head and high lift cams then you will have a racing engine clean up the super-charger or get a recon one you could easily get 500 bhp out of her maybe a lot more depending on how much money you want to spend like putting a holley ECU system on it bigger injectors run it on methanol or capable of dual fuels petrol or methanol only for racing not for road of course it all depends how far you want to go with it having built jag engines in the past they are nice easy engines to mess around with so have fun whilst making some big horse power out of her.

While Jaguar used DOHC inline 6s since the late 40s one thing I find interesting is the formerly OHV inlines that have been developed or modified into DOHC 24V versions. On the Ford side of course the original 144 CID/2.4L Thriftmaster Six eventually morphed into the Barra. An additional Twin Cam version of the OHV Ford (1) was developed for racing was built in Argentina along with Twin Cam 4 valve versions of the Chevrolet and AMC/Jeep inline sixes. These race motors displace 3 liters with about the only common original part being used is the block. The heads on all three engines appear of a common basic design as the cam covers all have the same basic appearance. Also equipped with gridle type main bearings, dry sumps and l think new crankshafts (2). Output around 500 hp using two Weber downdrafts. Used the the oldest continuous race series on Earth. Dating back to the 30s.
    1) The same basic engine as the Barra came from. Not the 240/300.
    2) Not sure how they got the displacement down to 3.0L either via destroking or bore sleeving. Or a combination of the two. If the heads share a common combustion chamber design all three engines could share common bore and stroke dimensions.

The barra has nothing to do with the pre crossflow falcon sixes. Complete different design from the ground up. The barra and all the ohc ford sixes before it took more influence from the aj6 jag motor from when ford bought jaguar. Ford australia even admitted jaguar helped with the crankshaft of the intech six in the AU. Claiming the connection between pre xflow sixes and the barra is like saying the slant six was somehow altered or modified into the Hemi sixes- both were designed by chrysler in the US, thats where the connection ends.

Put that engine in a Series 3 E-Type (a lot cheaper than the Series 1 & 2), manual swap it and build it into a race car from the 60's, but with an 80's twist. Think kinda like 60's GT racing mixed with 80's Touring Cars.

You can repair anything, the only question is how much you want to spend. For me I would get new pistons, sleeves and shells for the crank. Set of new high lift cams with harder springs. If you are gonna do it then do it right. Once done I would look for an old rare Jaguar, remember the one Steed had in the Avengers? A replica of that with that good recon high performance engine. Once done auction it for funds for the next project.. love your work mate.

Mix up some citric acid with water, pour into cylinders, leave for a day or two, it will eat up all the corrosion and the crank will spin freely. This will however not magically bring back compression.
Have done so with seized engines many times before a rebuild.

If you turned the crank down on seizure point at top you could put a Honing tool in sleeves & clean it up in no time preventing any further damage to taking out of Pistons.
I have rebuilt worse looking engines in my time of 71 years.
Get a wire brush on those Cams & polish it a bit afterwards and Bob's your uncle.
You a bunch of Woozies ?

  • @Tom-Lahaye

Block OK, head castings OK, crank OK, that's enough for me to make an engine rebuildable, everything else can be replaced. As cost isn't an issue of course, it's about saving a rare engine.
And then you have the opportunity to hot cam it and give it more boost, fit a programable ECU and large injectors.
