@Idoubbleyou what engine swap would you consider doing if not a stock mgte? I've considered doing a k24/k20 swap, an inline 6 bmw engine, or even possibly a coyote, although the coyote would be pretty expensive and extensive. I really like the k24 block with k20 head bc its small, and there's alot of aftermarket support for it. There's also an adaptor to slap it to the s2000 trans.
I had NO idea Faye swapped the 88 trim on to the 89+ one?! I have to see that dude. I thought I was the only Supra owner ever to do that. I swapped my entire backend section out for 89+ (with LED boards) and I just did NOT want to lose the insanely nice trim mine has (which seems to be exceedingly rare.) SO glad my interior is nice and dash is pristine. I shaved off the bottom lip of the centerpiece and stuck my old trim on it. It IS raised a bit, but I do not care, it works. Don't know if you are aware of the Toyota Supra Enthusits discord server, but there are a LOt of folks there I've met for shows that would love your products. EDIT: My 88' gray/maroon supra with 113K miles in 2021 was $8,000. It's Auto. It's NA. I paid out the ass, but she is INCREDIBLY nicer than than any other I've seen. You were right on not buying cheap Supras. I paid a crazy amount, but everyone at car shows says how incredible it looks. If all the three bumper sections didn't start peeling after I got it, I would be happy ; _ ;

@@Idoubbleyou It works, thanks. She did the EXACT same job I did, but somehow made her trim flush lol. Plus she didn't have to deal with broken bolts like I have in my 89+ lights. They have almost doubled in price since I got them in 2021, so I just need to work with what I've got. One of the LED turn signals stopped working and their is virtually only one guy I know of (ZELDS) to fix it so that's where I am at now. Faye is just an inspiration to me.
Awesome collection, love the jz. I found a rust free 87 Aut has Engine and Transmission problems. Hopefully I'll be able to fix or just go with a stand alone. Would love to do a modern automatic with padel shifters but that's far away. I am old school so no IG, will reach out thru ebay need some interior trims I'm in San Antonio Tx so ebay is best option. thanks
I had two mk3's, first for me was an '89 in 1998, and a 1991 Turbo a couple years later. Lots of issues TBH, money pits for a kid in his late teens and early 20's. That said, I enjoyed them when they ran. Quite heavy GT car, I will also say that my desire for yet another mk3 waned when I happened across the 4g Lexus GS. I feel the RC and GS are good spiritual successors to the mk3's GT/Luxury nature. The 7M is a very tough engine once you deal with the issues, but it isn't near as good as other Toy engines like 1UZ, the JZ's, and 2GR. The 7M engine feels a bit like an engine Toyota would rather forget. Just like they forgot to torque the heads...lol.
Well said. Im 25 now. and have owned a mk3 my entire driving life. And as I get older I get more and more tired of keeping up with the money pit issues. it seems like something always need fixed or something could always use improving.
@@Idoubbleyou well you have made a (hopefully successful) run of keeping them on the road, so there's that. But to be fair, these things were money pits back in the 90's, just years after they came out. I can't say the same of my 11 year old GS, or 13 year old FJ when I had it. Cash for Clunkers took a great deal of these off the road prematurely, and the otherwise viable parts that would have been recycleable were crushed, which cut the market off for a lot of these cars and many like it of the era. A shame but until someone starts fabbing new components like the 60's classics, this might be a lost cause.
I would like a video from you on all the differences between the years of the mk3 such as the headlight on the black one looks like an air dam? What the little button looking things on the front bumper near headlights I know nothing of these cars but I found a very clean 23 year garage kept car I bought and got running looking to sell or maybe keep and upgrade a little bit on it
Ok yea I like that idea for a video in the future. The headlight cover with the air intake is aftermarket, it came on it when i got the car. i wasnt a fan at first but it grew on me. Oh and the little things you called buttons those are headlight sprayers.. kinda neat for a car this age.

Though I am a teen, theres one in my area (Turbo, Auto, Pre-89, T-top) with low miles and grandma-owned. Ive been researching for a long while, so this helps alot. Question. Do you have anything on Mk3's that have been sitting a while? What dries out? What other things can be a problem?
I hope you can get it. that would be so cool. So there is alot of stuff once a car sits. I would highly recommend replacing or atleast checking the brake lines (The metal ones on my one car rusted and leaked) and the old rubber ones on the end crack with age. It will probably need bushings and ening vaccum lines, I would flush all the fluids and put in new fluid everywhere.
@Idoubbleyou Gotcha. I had a feeling all the rubber would need some looking at. As it is a targa, I'll use that stuff you mentioned on the rubber and whatnot. And if my funds allow, I'll try to do a full flush of everything. It looks pretty mint, but me and my dad will surely check it out indepth, as I know it's an old car that even with the low miles it has will probably be plagued with electrical issues. @@Idoubbleyou Also, one more thing! Supposedly, according to the two older folks that own it, the turbo blew, and then I suppose it sat after. What do you think could cause that? Maybe not letting the turbo cool down? If there's any words of advice, I'd love to hear.
@NissanR397 I would bet the car has a blown headgasket. And the car was burning coolant I dont see alot of them with blown turbos. if thats actually the case it would be a fairly simple fix minus the bolts that will break when replacing it. Now the headgasket issue if thats bad will be a slippery and expensive slope.

I don't really know how to respond to that as it's so two-sided, as one could be no biggie, and the other could spell the end, but I suppose we will see what comes of it down the road. If it really does have a BHG, then I either don't pick it up at all, or use it as a huge bargaining chip... As I said, only time will tell with it. But again, thank you for the help. You've shined a whole new light on the idea of it, good and bad, so I appreciate the unfiltered honesty.
1jz swapped cars are tricky, it really depends on the quality of the parts used and how well everything was done. Also what transmission was used, what ecu, what turbo setup, etc. I usually see 1jz swapped mk3s for 12-30 as you can imagine the 12k cars are usually needing some love and the cars up around the 30k mark usually sit for awhile. So its kinda hard to say.
@@Idoubbleyou I WISH all the US ones were not targas. Been the bane of owning one. Had serious targa bolt problems and one day during this summer I forgot to tighten the ONE that was holding it on while I worked on the other and it's kind of useless now. Got another for $400 that needs paint up top and STILL leaks, but not to the level my OG top did. I took all the rails off on that one and resealed everything, but I must have used too much or I screwed up the tolerances because she would NOT bolt down right after that, thus the accident. NOT fixing the "new" one lol. I'll take a few drips every once in a while.
@rushnerd I know what you mean im not a fan of them much either. and I could care less if the top comes off I never drive with it off. One tip that might help with leaking is some honda shinitsu grease that stuff really helps bring seals back to life and mine doesnt usually leak (I think they all leak some)
@@Idoubbleyou I gave all the seals a full massage with that stuff! It does help. I've driven quite a few times with the top off. It's NOT good. She's not super stable and a little shaky.
All mine are pretty rough, except my jza70. They are hard to find in good shape and when you do the nice ones are 15-30k now. Honestly its better to spend the money on a nicer one than to spend the same amount doing body work on a cheap one
mk3 was the least reliable vehicle toyota has ever built. The head gasket and engine troubles were criminal. Should've been a class action lawsuit agains them(i was a 17 year old kid in the 90s that poured all my money at 5.15 an hour into this money pitts lol)

Thats interesting. They are the more rare ones. (The opposite is true for USDM mk3s)

Is the silver 88 rare ?
Not really. The pre89 mk3s had the highest production numbers. The most rare pre89s to my knowledge (excluding the turbo A) are the 2 tone cars
I dunno man, buying a 35 year old car with expensive, hard to find parts seems totally irresponsible. But these cars turn me on, like sexually.
