@@Ey3shi3ldtv i was thinking about gh7 and g9ii. On multiple AF test i saw on UA-cam it seems that they have done an absolutely amazing job. Maybe in upcoming fullframe models we could see the same af performance
Glad it helped. I used to own that lens back in the day. I find it also has too much Chroma for my liking. Something about that lens structure has always struggled with AF, not sure what it is.
The 20mm f1.7II works very well on my G9II, so it will probably works well on the GH7 too, the AF is fast in video, much better than on the GH6 or GH5. However it is noisy if you shoot with the internal mic on a silent room. I had some issue with my 45-175mm on my G9II though, even in AF-S with back button focus. It sometimes loses everything in focus, like the GH6 did when using most lenses below 48fps. My 45-175mm is not very sharp so maybe it is an issue with my sample, but I never had this issue with my GH6 and GH5 when using back button focus.
nice. i have the g9ii and pre-ordered the gh7 (mostly for still photography) because of the tilt-screen, express card, locking mode dial, and a lumix rep said the g9ii is not exactly the same; gh7 has more dynamic range.

I'd be very curious about how the new AF works with something like a Metabones speedbooster + lets say Sigma 18-35. Is it usable or still a no go with that new system? Thank you. :)
Looking very good for UA-cam type shooting. But looking at the background, as you are walking quickly but at a constant speed towards the camera, you can see the AF pulsing in several steps. Again, useful (and a massive improvement fromDFD) but it shows where Panasonic has room to improve.
Great to see the improvements with the 15mm! It is now most certainly usable. Do you have any Olympus lenses you can test? The G9II is a great option. The size to performance ratio is optimal IMHO.

I wonder why the 12 mm (2016) is so "bad", while the two year earlier released 42.5 mm (2014) is fine. They both use stepper motors for focusing. Also the 17 mm is from 2014.
Awesome video! Quick question if I may. I have the GH6 and use a combo of manual and AF lenses. Would a LiDAR autofocus system give similar AF results as the GH7? Or is the PDAF better even than LiDAR?
Lidar works to detect what's closest to the camera so if you hold your hand up, it may move to that instead. I haven't used a Lidar system, it may have moved forward since I looked into it a year or two ago. PDAF is better generally due to the tracking modes, but both will no doubt do a good job. I think Lidar can work in darker situations pretty well.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Superb, thank you for taking the time to answer. I’ve been tempted by a LiDAR system for a while for manual focus lenses, so may pull the trigger and see how it goes. The GH7 does look very impressive though!
Yeah it's maybe the best prime lens Panasonic has made in terms of overall look and performance. If you shoot 100p in the Recording Menu, you get PDAF, but loose the human detection/tracking modes. If you shoot with variable frame rate (like S&Q) It's stuck to manual focus but it slows it down in camera. The G9II keeps PDAF in S&Q which gives it the advantage.

It should be able to lock focus and stay there unless there's a significant change, like placing your hand in front of your face or making a dramatic movement. @@pragmaticfilmmakingI don't think that works with Contrast Detect since it's never entirely sure where it should focus. If for example CD thought it was in focus, it would remain out-of-focus the whole time if the scene didn't change. PDAF doesn't need to search, as it is more of a yes/no instead of a maybe.
@@overnightdelivery The machine learning system can distinguish different body parts and tell the difference between humans and animals. In my studio, even when there's only one well-lit person, the system keeps readjusting its focus, which creates the pulsing effect. I discovered that the pulsing stops by reducing the AF sensitivity to -3. There's room for improvement in this aspect. Additionally, if the pulsing frequency is over 60fps, the human eye shouldn't be able to detect it, so that might be another area Lumix could look into. Panasonic just seems uninterested, and the even BGH1 could be vastly improved with just a few simple firmware updates.
@@pragmaticfilmmaking But isn't the animal/person detection different than pure contrast detection? Guess we'll never know for sure if it could of been improved to the point of being reliable.

Sigma I have the 16, 30, and 56 1.4's On the Lumix/Leica side I have the 7-14, 12/1.4, 12-35/2.8, 14-42 PZ, 20, 25/1.7, 30 macro, 35-100/2.8, 42.5/1.2, 45 macro, and 45-175 PZ. One day I will get the 10-25 and 25-50 zooms A lot of us use a mix of lens brands, especially Olympus and Lumix/Leica, and Sigma, but all the reviews are only addressing the Lumix/Leica lenses and ignoring Olympus and Sigma, which is not realistic compared to real world lens usage. If Panasonic are only permitting Lumix/Leica lenses in reviews then they are idiots, and being anti-user in that attitude. If they are not, can you please try out Olympus and Sigma lenses on the camera?
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Do you have any Olympus lenses to try? While my basics like the 12-35 and 35-100/2.8's are Lumix or Leica, Olympus is essential for the things where Panasonic is lacking. like the 1.8 fisheye, longer focal length macros, etc. and they are an essential part of an MFT kit. I wish Panasonic would get back to developing new MFT lenses. We need a 105mm macro, 17mm f1.7, 12mm f1.7, and a 6mm f2 or 2.8 for a start. My Sigmas are mostly for my LS300 which has an MFT mount with a Super35 sensor, but the Sigma 56 I find really useful on my Lumix bodies as well. Awesome lens.
Been waiting for this! Do you think panasonic has reached sony in terms of autofocus? Is it finally the time that people stop worshiping their sonys for their autofocus? Also if the autofocus is fast you can always slow it down to make it look smoother(for video because for photography you want the opposite). Just a note for the fanboys that will come here and try to find something to argue that their sony is better😅
Sony's focus pull is great, but the LUMIX focus pull is faster in most scenarios. It will also track you further back in the frame with human detection on. Sony's dedicated eye tracking is very sticky up close but it can lose you furrther back. I find hte S5II and X to be better than my Sony's for talk to camera pieces. The problem is a lot of people don't understand the modes on the Panasonic cameras, but it's at a point now where it's better than people realise.
@@DroseMr I was going to add there are very few other visible differences. I bought version II of the lens thinking it was version I, and neither I nor the shop spotted it until I came to update the firmware. Very happy discovery.

I dont know what you do with your lumix 42mm 1.7. it was unusuable with my gh5 and it still is with my gh7 the lense refuses to focus at all if i am lets say on the far left side of the frame. It only works with very simple tasks and overal its very unrelieable if it comes to autofocus. I paid over 400 euros for this lense and its autofocus was too bad always even for fotos when i tried to use it with my gh5. For fotos it focuses slow and hesitant if i push the shutter button and in video its too unreliebale. I just keep it because no one wants to pay for this piece of garbage. I own lumix 1.7 25mm as well and its not sharp at 1.7. i have to stop down to at least 2.8 to make it acceptable sharp. Even the super cheap 12-35 3.5-56 is much much sharper wide open and the autofovcus is better as well. All those old lumix lenses need an update as the really are not good in 2024. . 12-60, 14-140 and leica 15mm 1.7 are good in my book but usually i just use the olympus pro 12-40 2.8. olympus lenses are much better than all those old lumix lenses in general.
those tests are annoying , yes its important for it to pick up focus at close distance but more important test is how the focus sticks when moving in the frame in regular distance (when you shoot people not only yourself..)
It's the same thing, if someone is holding the camera and you walk in what's the difference? I've used the AF on a bunch of tests in my review of the G9II and GH7. Check out those scenarios and see if they make you feel better.
I really don't understand the 10-25, and your advice on that. Transitions look good? Man, there are no transitions. This lens jumps like crazy. Very unnatural. Honestly it's unusable for client work at it's current stage. It's a travesty that supposed to be the flagship lens. The cheapest 3rd party trashbin lens for E-Mount does a better job in this regards, than this.
It's shot in aperture priority mode with no custom settings. You can easily slow the transition speed down if you need to. It does the slow focus pull fine. This was all just straight out of the box on the pre-release version.

How about autofocus in less ideal lightning as in the evening?
It works great in most scenarios. Gerald tested some low light AF tests in his video, but in my real-world stuff it's been great.
Thanks
Have you tried Olympus and Sigma lenses with the GH7? I am a Lumix guy (G9, GH5 II, GH5s) saving up to buy the GH7. My lenses include the Olympus 8mm Fisheye, 17mm f1.8, 60mm macro, and 100-400, and the Olympus 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. One day I will get the 90 macro and the 75 1.8.
Sigma I have the 16, 30, and 56 1.4's
On the Lumix/Leica side I have the 7-14, 12/1.4, 12-35/2.8, 14-42 PZ, 20, 25/1.7, 30 macro, 35-100/2.8, 42.5/1.2, 45 macro, and 45-175 PZ. One day I will get the 10-25 and 25-50 zooms
A lot of us use a mix of lens brands, especially Olympus and Lumix/Leica, and Sigma, but all the reviews are only addressing the Lumix/Leica lenses and ignoring Olympus and Sigma, which is not realistic compared to real world lens usage. If Panasonic are only permitting Lumix/Leica lenses in reviews then they are idiots, and being anti-user in that attitude. If they are not, can you please try out Olympus and Sigma lenses on the camera?
I don't own any sigma lenses mate, I need to get one and give it a shot at some point.
@@artistjoh So do I. I have the trio of Sigma lenses 16, 30 and 56mm 1.4 and I love those glasses.
Olympus pro lenses are great
Too bad it seams you don't have the Panasonic Leica 12-60mm to compare it those lenses.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy isnt it possible to make it smoother when it pulls focus from the settings?
How do ya know wich version 12-35 2.8 you have?Thank You
The lens number (found on the lens) is different.
Version I
H-HS12035
Version II
H-HSA12035
@@KirstenBayes Thank You
Second version!
The author talked about this in his video.
@@ВалентинАракчеев-б7д i prob better watch again. Thank You
@@DroseMr I was going to add there are very few other visible differences. I bought version II of the lens thinking it was version I, and neither I nor the shop spotted it until I came to update the firmware. Very happy discovery.
Nice, did like
If I can get enough videos lined up I 100% want to get a GH7….
Imaging as lumix dev you can go back in the past " Drop down this shi*** af technology do like sony or canon " s1h s5 gh5 would have been such godlike cameras
Why don't you show us 4k50p & 4k100p autofocus performance ?
4K50 is the same performance, I showed that on my G9II review. Rock on.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy and what about 4k 100p ??
Hi Shane, I am in Melbourne and was wondering whether there is an email address I could contact you on?
Check my UA-cam about page, I am not typing it publicly for spam reasons.
I coudn’t find an About page on the channel (I googled and I read that UA-cam changed it) so I checked Description, your web page and links but no joy unfortunately?
thank you bro
the pdaf work good with 1080p 50/60 ff mode ?
Yes, it does.
I just got my GH7 on the actual release date from B&H and I’m very disappointed with the PDAF. The focus is drifting and it seems no better than the GH6 so I’m sending it back.
Something sounds wrong with the lens potentially. There's no tricks in this video. It works great. I replied to your other comment with some tips.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy I’ve contacted Panasonic and they determined that something was wrong with the sensor and recommend a replacement camera especially suggesting that I use mode 2 and full area view which focus 95 percent better but I still get some drifting.
@@Sethmotley Make sure you have a tracking/subject detection mode on as well if it's not already.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy yes it on. Thanks.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Thanks for the feedback. Still strange. I'm guessing the 12-35 had the same settings and it's miles better.
@@laliland It's F2.8 instead of 1.7, so the shutter speed might have been reduced. This was the pre-release camera. I'll do an update coming up now I own a GH7 where I am not so time-crunched. :)
@@GeekyNerdyTechy looking forward!
