Hi everyone, thanks for watching. This is just a quick A/B comparison between my Sony FX30 and the LUMIX GH7. I have the GH7 on loan until the end of June, so if you want to see anything else - please let me know. Both cameras are great, and the FX30 is a great value option now in 2024. The GH7 is definitely a beast when it comes to its video features! Thanks for the kind words and support. Subscribe for more videos and check the details and related videos in the description box.
Killer video Shane!
Great Video! Could you try the arri log c3 grading? As in how it grades with logc3 vs a color match profile to an alexa via vlog? Wish the gh7 came with the Arri logc3 automatically for pre orders. Or what the differences are in logc3 between the gh7 and gh6.
Panasonic out here making us proud.
GH7 colors looks great. Better stabilization plus EVF, GH7 is a more versatile camera for me.
GOSH. the colors on the gh7 are amazing here. ❤
It has a great look to it. All this sort of stuff is all personal opinion. The Sony has a more saturated mid tones but the Panasonic looks more balanced to my eye.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy totally. and my personal opinion... gh7 colors looks amazing! hahahaha
Always has
Panasonic with really quick AF sounds like a joke earlier, vut now I'm seeing tha it's real. And you can customise speed of AF in Panasonic settings. This year Panasonic make a great jump in AF field.
And I don't like a skin tone on this and the many Sony camera (I've got as work cam A7S3 and you pretend to shoot in S-Log, cause skin tone is greenish or yellowish anyway on different WB settings, Idk how to explain, but Panasonic has more pleasant skin tone than other brands, maybe except Fuji/Canon.
@@AkrilFarb But you can change the colors easily, this is digital.
@@barrosopalosantos Not really. Everyone says that, but it's hard to not mess with other colors in the shot unless subject masking every single shot. Everyone says color science is outdated, yet you can almost always easily tell what brand a high production video is using, even if it has a few levels of color grading work. Our base point does a lot to our perception to over time.
@@barrosopalosantos Uhm, maybe you've never tried to edit video, that wasn't shooting RAW\S-Log... much easier to have a right skin tone while shooting. Or I just prefer a Pana skin tone more :)
@@AkrilFarb No, lo siento pero en digital si editas, puedes poner el tono que quieras con cualquier sistema, no entiendo el problema, otra cosa sería si no quieres editar...
Your product comparison videos are exalent and extremely valuable to beginners trying to decide between product A & product B. Keep up the good work Shane, we would be lost without you. It's no wonder why you have so many followers...
The GH7, hands down. It's the better camera in almost every aspect. And this makes me very optimistic about the future SH2, that it's going to be a FF GH7 on steroids.
The reason i have switched to Lumix from Sony is the lens choice and lens size. Its a no brainer.
The skin tones gave it away instantly. Panny was just so much better.
Dude you have such a man crush on Lumix. You also slid the color temp on the FX30 shot at 5:21sec
The entire outside shot was set manually to cloudy day white balance. Thanks for watching.
Great video Shane. The GH7 really has taken things into the wow level! Big thumbs up! 👍👍👍👍🤪
Thanks, Peter. It's great camera - we do need to see one in the Christmas room coming up. :)
My experience with Sony, as I currently own the FX30, is that it tends to sneak in a little yellow into the skin tones. That's why I've always preferred LUMIX skin tones over most brands except Canon. To me, the GH7 with all of its features is more of a cinema camera than the FX30. But, I still love the FX30. If I can have both I would. I am battling with the idea of switching completely over to the GH7. Thanks for the excellent comparisons.
I went full frame (A7iii & 7iv) coming from 10 years in MFT system (Gh2, G7, G85). Think Lenses. Panasonic doesn't offer all you can get on the E-Mount system. They could have built a great combo of f1.2 lenses, but Panasonic hasn't so you have to rely on their previous stuff with much more DOF than APSC or FF. Dynamic range & autofocus will never beat your Fx30 either.
@@cinegenies4651Except the GH7 has better dynamic range than the FX30 lol
@@D3AL1O I'm not sure you would see the difference. And reviewers/influencers are "influenced" by brands money.
@@D3AL1Oit doesnt really, but no point in fighting for dr anyway
I shoot my FX-6, my FX-3 and FX-30 all in cinemas EI (log profile) and then color grade it. I don’t get yellowish skin tones, but if I did I could always add more magenta to my color grade. Rarely do I use colors straight out of camera. You can get any color you want from any camera if shot in log with 10 bit color. I even have canon LUTS if I want that look.
This is such a great video! Fascinating results. Thanks for talking the time to make it.
Thanks, Mark! I hope you're well, mate. You're videos are killing it online. Well done! :)
I immediately knew the right choice was GH7 due to the better skin tones and color. I was right.
LOOKS SO REAL
I knew it was GH7 on the right because it has the best color and skin tones!
fx30 is sexier tho lol gh7 still is big
The way the highlights roll off on his head is better looking too.
I mean the fx30 shot is quite overexposed in the court shots. And in the log shots the fx30 colors look better imo.
Excelente comparativa, ya estaba esperando este video!
Faster autofocus than Sony?! I’m shook especially because that 25mm is good but not quite their fastest autofocus lens.
It worked pretty great in this video. Walking into frame the Panasonic is definitely faster. I noticed the same thing with the S5II as well. Crazy stuff.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy you got the version one or version two?
Great comparison!
Also I was told by Sirui they will come out with sniper autofocus lenses for micro 4/3 if there’s more demand so please demand away! 🙏
wow i didn't expect that with the Panaleica 25mm 1.4, which is one of the worse lens in terms of autofocus!
It did a way better job than I thought with this lens, no questions about it! I was very surprised in a good way.😀
Excellent as Always! Cheers!
Thank you for making this comparison!
You're one of my favourite UA-camrs who makes the best reviews ! Thanks
Thanks, Ken! You rock, mate thanks.
Hey, great review as always! Does the gh7 support phase af hd50fps and above or not like the s5ii and s5iis!
Definitely GH7 for the win. Better colors, but most importantly insanely good Panasonic stabe. Panasonic leads the camera industry with their stabe, and stabilization plus the audio advantages, and AF that can beat that Sony makes me feel like I slipped into a different dimension. Never thought I would hear the words "better than Sony" about Panasonic AF.
Great video. Can you test the 60fps and 100 fps for S5mark2 for HD and see if it has PDAF now or not? You mentioned that S9 has PDAF for HD upto 100 fps. I wonder if S5 mark 2 got the upgrade or not.
GH7 looks great! I wonder if the Sony AF settings were just in stock (balanced) because that’s a major factor in how quickly they focus. Even on my ZV-E1 if I set transition speed and subject shift sensitivity to Fast, it locks on immediately even with old lenses.
For the first 90 seconds of the video, I thought the Sony was on the right due to the autofocus......but the colours were screaming Panasonic at me!!! While it was late to the party, Panasonic have leapfrogged with their PDAF and the colours are still oh so good. My GH5's will have to do for the immediate future still but...............
Fantastic comparison! The GH7 has really nice colours 👌
Most advantage for the GH7 is the black balance is more rich! Lot of ppl won’t notice that but that’s what you look for in a cinema camera
The GH7 color science and dynamic range appears noticeably better than the Fx30, which left the green in your jacket rather dull. Thanks for making the vid.
Completely subjective. They both grade the same. Can look however you want. Rec709 flavouring is irrelevant imo.
@@sloppysteaks I totally get your point about grading any image, my remark is only about the ‘straight out of camera’ look which for my money was more pleasing from the GH7. If anything there were a few moments where the FX30 looked like it was over exposed on the talents head. That was probably just that mischievous ball in the sky. The studio shot with the FX30 looked beautiful.
FWIW I can’t remember a paying job where I haven’t tweaked every single clip.
Very helpful. Thank you 🙏
Very good job. If the GH7 is not going to be the new legendary camera it would be surprising.
The video I’ve been waiting for!
Not because I’m torn between the cameras but the FX30 is such a standard for crop cameras.
Do you know if the AF transition speed is the same on both? IE they were both on standard? cinematically I think the slightly slower AF is nicer, but that's only if you are trying to rack focus as part of the shot. But I'm so happy Panny Boy has finally added DPAF!!!
To me, it seems that GH7 has better DR than FX30!
Another great Video:
Timely, I started to consider full frame but this comparison helped me decide on the “Flagship”
I noted a few of your findings, GH7 makes the FX30, and Z6iii seem old.
My notes on Gh7
1. Faster Auto focus (who would’ve thought?)
2. Arrie Alexa Luts are only on Panasonic !
3. Deeper blacks, + exposure curves (mot to mention Features (SSD,
4. Much, Much Smoothest Anti shake.
5. Dynamic range appears wider on GH7 despite Sony's being labelled a "cinema camera".
6. Image of fence at night in your video (side by side) appears better lit on the GH7 despite it having the smaller sensor.
7. Open gate to shoot horizontal, later change it to any screen format is only available on Panasonic
8. Panasonic always led the industry with No heating issues, GH7 has the biggest cooing fan.
9. Sony wins on AF at on 120p but I hardly use 120.
10. The Codecs, both quality and quantity is world’s best.
Clear win for the GH7! But they’re both good cameras
Great review as always. We’re at a point where no matter the system you choose you can get amazing results from any modern camera. It’s a great time to be photo/video shooter 🎉
Can you see a difference between Proresraw and Prores/H265 about details rendering ?
I have both the G9II and GH6, when I crop I much prefer the fine details of the GH5, especially in 4K and C4K. The GH6 and G9II show rougher edge sharpening but with less details, and skin textures look mushy in low light, the GH5 has more noise but keep details like a raw still picture.
I have the same issue on my S5II when I compare this camera to both my S1 and S5. However external BRAW has not these weird sharpening and detail filtering on the S5II, so I suppose Proresraw on the GH7 must be free from these extra processing too ?
I'm also wondering :) I couldn't se as much texture on the skin like I see on the GH5. I hope he does the test 🙏
I guessed the one on the left was the Sony just based on the fact that you look like you have jaundice in that one.
🤣🤣🤣
Both are great cameras - just depends on personal preference. I own the FX30 and I'm nowhere close to unlocking its full potential. If I was starting from scratch, the GH7 would be tough to beat, but I'm not sure I'd invest in M43 instead of E-mount lenses. Great comparison as usual!
M43 lens selection is not as robust as Sony E and the gap is only gonna get wider.
Sometimes it looks like people are buying cameras to be a lens collector. Mft as all other systems have all the lenses the user needs, how many would you need, 4-5 at max. Not a zillion all the e mount has.
@@frankfeng2701 MFT lenses are super-solid. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by them not being as robust as Sony E-mount...
Great review
Excellent review!
Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching!
@@GeekyNerdyTechy You're welcome! Question - is it possible to color match a GH7 *And* an S5 II if I use the same natural picture profile, or does more work need to be done in post production if I use similar Panasonic lenses with same F stop?
One thing I found in the GH7 and G9II manual was that they can't do full sensor 4:3 open gate at 4.4K 60/50p, it's pixel/pixel. Considering that they're doing a big open gate push with the S9 and Lumix Lab app it's a shame there's a crop.
The GH5II *can* do its 4K open gate 60/50p with the full sensor though.
GH7 skin tones are excellent! I shoot Sony so I could instantly tell with the slightly warm yellowish tones 😅
Appreciated this! And noted re the newer lenses for the GH7: curious about what the difference is with older lenses! (I have the newer lenses, but it was really just because of the linear focus).
The 20mm f1.4 is a terrible autofocus lens. Some of these older generation ones won’t perform like this and some will. I don’t have them all on hand but some were pretty terrible on my old Olympus which had PDAF.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy the 20mm options for MFT are not brilliant, neither the OM 20mm f/1.4 or the Lumix 20mm f/1.7. Slightly frustrating in a system blessed with so many top tier lenses.
I never owned sony cameras but their images always looked to clinical and clean.
They're both superb cameras. I love the GH7 screen and would almost buy the camera just to have that! The simplicity of the FX30 makes working with it, at least in my professional environment (almost exclusively locked off on a tripod), perfect.
Would be curious to know how you were setting white balance... Whether it was auto or manual.
The gh series has always been absolutely awesome in natural light, but I don't think as strong in man made lighting, which is annoying.
Wow the GH7 is a clear winner. I didn't expect that !!
Hell, what do you say about a GH7 vs FX3 video? 👀
I’ll see what I can do if I can put it together before the month is out. 😀
Damnit, just bought an FX3 😂 But I do like panny colors. Def let us know your thoughts on this comparison!!
Shane, did you notice any moire on the gh7 when testing? That’s one thing I’ve noticed on the S5iix on certain clothing. Not a deal breaker, but does moire ever bother you on footage?
It's because they don't have anti-aliasing filters. I prefer the sharpness and am willing to have a little moire because that scenario for me is incredibly rare to happen.
First time I watch you, very good job! 👍🏻 I like how you do 😊 "I'll be back!"
Cannot wait to see what they do with the S1H Mark 2.
Excellent video. You pretty much summed up everything perfectly. As amazing as the gh7 is, it's not enough to get me out of the Sony APS-C ecosystem. That image stabilization is very attractive though. I hate having to use a gimbal.
Sony's advantage on lens selection is only going to get bigger.
I just recently bought a lumix S5iix with the new sigma 24-70 mk ii and I will also be getting that GH7 to go with it. I’m gonna sell my GH6. More so excited for that GH7!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Why sell the GH6? I watched like 20 videos and still doubt that the image quality is better on the GH7?
@@michaelkupfer3723 because the streaking issue left me always paranoid when shooting in certain conditions. I would like to start shooting with lower iso when using vlog and yes colors on the Gh6 is a bit better but colorgrading can easily fix that issue.
I instantly liked the right image the most... It´s so pleasant...without bla bla bla!
Is there a (or several) reason(s) to get the GH7 instread of the S5ii? I got that one last year because of the phase detect and ’cause it’s full frame.
smaller body, smaller lenses, internal ProRes RAW, less rolling shutter, higher frame rates, optional ARRI Log C3, tally lamps, 32-bit float audio with XLR2 adapter, CF Express card, 4K/120, flip/tilt screen doesn’t interfere with cables, etc.
My current game plan is to buy the GH7, add a speedbooster / adaptor, and use Canon glass on it? Would love to hear your thoughts.
If you buy speed booster just get an S5IIX and native lenses and save yourself the hassle with all of the tradeoffs that come with that process. I know a few people that do that looking for a full frame look - full frame does that better and easier now (and also sometimes cheaper)
I have an a7s iii and GH5. I did prefer the colors over Sony straight out of camera.
I am however willing to stick with Sony and learn to tune it to what I like for minimal color grading.
I still have good mft Leica glass and still deciding if I want a GH7 at launch or to wait a bit because I absolutely don’t need another camera right now lol
The Sony colors are still great. I really like their Movie profile for fast projects, its got a great look and its got a bit more saturation in the skin tones.
Like the gh6 it would surely be off by 600$ in 3 months as its not selling 😅
I just love the panasonic gh7 and now pana has a GREAT autofocus also!!!
Let’s compare both camera in low light with normal lenses or lenses in the same price range. How is the noise and dynamic range on ISO 6400?
I dont even have to watch the video to know the result. Its just a shame that a cheaper camera is better and more of a cinema camera than a "real" cinema camera.
Sony starts loosing ground now and they rush to do software updates so they can keep their fanboys.
I am waiting until I am financially able to buy the s5iix and then ditch sony forever(my current one is a6300 and is so frustrating to use).
Nice video!
(Just watched the video and was expecting the fx30 to cost more but looks like this isnt the case. Maybe sony thought they will lose sales so they lowered the price? Who knows?)
No fx30 was always cheaper. A6300 is like 6-7 years old ? Everything have changed since then...the quick menu system is a blast to use
@@ludovicavice3496 yeah but the ergonomics still suck. And most of their models overheat anyways.
@@rghgamer5368 sony stop overheating since the a7s3 release... I worked in the scorching sun of a tropical island n never once I got an overheating sign even after my photographer z8 was overheating... stop watching these tech channels, watch the professional at work channels like pdmokry, mark bones etc
One of the reasons i think the mft system is superior is that the physics gives you better reach for super-telephoto whilst at the same time letting lenses be lighter and cheaper. The drawbacks can be solved by improving technology; sensors can become more sensitive, and manufacturing techniques can make lenses faster so we can still have our bokeh and pay for it too. MFT for the win. I was considering getting the S5iiX but I think its smarter to get the GH7.
i have to get the gh7.the imagestabilization is the best feature in my opinion. I also own the gh5 and still use it for event videos. it is the best because you do not need a gimbal for most of the time. sometimes a gimbal can be too distracting for events and people will look into the camera all the time. while shooting handheld, they do not notice you that much
Very good comparison... IMHO, Panasonic always had the potential of offering the most full featured hybrid cameras to the masses and in some ways they already did. This GH7 is a BEAST!!! I can't wait to get my hands on mine.
You do know you have AF settings on the FX30? The skin tone exposure and color is much more dynamic on the FX30. The GH7 is just a dull image.
I had the speed and sensitivity set to 4 on the Sony and set to default (zero) on the GH7.
You talked about the prize of the camera bodies, but is there a huge difference including the lenses? I don’t own a FX30, but Sony lenses are expensive, or not?
I think you have the auto focus pull on slow or medium. It's super fast if you set it on fast
The Sony is set to 4 on the speed and sensitivity.
@GeekyNerdyTechy oh! I have mine set to a very low speed and seems faster than your example... maybe the lens? Thanks for the conparison anyways!
Wow I can't believe that auto focus..it's on point
Panasonic, Nikon and Fuji all have a lot more contrast by default! It gives the illusion of a nicer looking image, but then what happens to the blacks?
I currently live and work in South Africa, and the professional cine's here are ALL obsessed with Sony and Canon full frame cameras.
You cant even mention the words Panasonic Lumix to them, they all have a mental block when it comes to Lumix.
Its truly weird.
No other camera manufacturer offers the same level of value that Panasonic Lumix does. No one!
And yet, even when i shoot with my Lumix cameras here in SA, I'm just dismissed as it isnt a Canon or a Sony.
Again, its really weird being surrounded by people who refuse to open their minds just a little bit.
Sony and Canon have most definitely captured the market here, with a little bit of Fuji and even Blackmagic thrown in.
But try to mention Panasonic Lumix and all you get is blank expressions followed by outright dismissal.
Completely bizarre!
It's pretty clear that the FX30 was set to pull focus slowly-which can be a feature when a more natural focus is desired...but it can also be set to fast and I think they would have been similar if that had been the setting.
The speed and sensitivity were set to 4 which is above middle. Some lenses will perform better with the same settings like the GM stuff but it’s all I had.
Panasonic natural profile follows the Japanese TV standards for colour regulation, the Sony does not have any profile like that.
So Panasonic are actually REALLY popular with Japanese TV Productions because the images were often usable straight out of the camera.
Easy !! Sony cameras have weird skin tones :D
Wow GH7 autofocus is faster than Sony !!
pana with the 25mm was a winner.
What was the focus speed set to in the menue on the fx30?
4 on both.
eh wait, doesn't the AF work up until 120fps?
i thought is was something like
- PDAF + Subject detect: up to 60fps
- PDAF Only: up to 120fps
- MF: above 120fps ( idk about this haha i think there was a dfd only or something)
If you use the regular recording menu on the GH7, you get phase detection AF. Variable frame rate mode slows the footage down in camera and in this mode you don't get Phase Detection AF. S&Q mode n the FX30 does the same thing and slows it down in camera with Phase Detection AF.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy ehhhhhh but on the g9ii i shot quite a few 4k120 snq and there was AF! just no subject. :/
Wow! Impressive. I want one
my fx30 is always giving yellowish skin tone? how to fix that?
good comparison
Holy heck... I noticed how much better subject separation the one on the right had, and I thought for sure that it was the Sony FX30... NOPE! It was the GH7 with a $150 lens LMAO 😂
Absolutely unbelievable! There's honestly no reason to buy any other hybrid mirrorless/cine camera besides the GH7 anymore... And to think that this is just the pre-production model demo model is just wild. Imagine how much better it will be with future firmware updates!
That’s the Panasonic Leica f1.4 lens and not the 1.7. It’s a similar price to the Sony 35mm I think
No mention of the GH7's 32 bit float sound recording?
It’s a great feature but this was more about video performance.
Well, well, if you even think about including the photography features on the GH7 :)
Can you compare GH7 with Fujifilm xh2s
we need to now start comparing Panasonic with FX3 or FX6 just bc!
2:12
Sums it up pretty well
I appreciate proper black from GH7.
People are sick to say on UA-cam "the gh7 colors are beautiful!"
I love GH7.
Hi is the S9 stabilisation equal to the GH7.
When you turn e-stabilisation on, they are basically the same. The S9 is my favorite camera of the year so far. Small, light, and has awesome IBIS, image quality, and great for handheld work. Check out the IBIS on my initial S9 review, there's a vlogging section on that video :)
Glad I stuck with Panasonic even with their previous bad AF.. now they're on top and i truly believe they will take over the next decade! Just wait for the S2H to release with even more features than the GH7! Sony watch out 👀
They won't 😅😅😅 they got like 5% of the marketshare 😅 the who professional world is using sony.
Gh7 great camera, but if I think that the S5IIX is practically a full frame GH7 that can work well even at 12500 ISO I think I made the right choice with the S5II (not "X" for me 10bit video is enough). Shooting 6K video is fantastic.
Yes but with worse rolling shutter, slightly worse IBIS, with 4k 60 cropped, no 120 fps, no 60fps 6k, and worse sharpening.
But the S5II(X) has indeed much better ISO performance, better DR and of course you can get shallow DOF very easily. Also the details rendering in 4K is so bad on the these cameras that I never use 4k 120fps on the G9II, I don't see the point. I always use 6K or 5,7K.
I have both the S5II and G9II, both are good, but I think Panasonic can do much better, the first S5 had better video engine.
Now with z6iii out, the playing fields are reset, cant see a future for mft no longer unless for budget shoots, since anything in z6iii will drop into z5 eventually and a7v/s5iii/fx40
No one would like to offer less than internal raw and no crop 4k60 and crop 4k120 ( no crop 4k120 in case of apsc ). Been a good run for mft
Gx7 for colour but looking at your sunglasses, the Sony has way more dynamic range and more natural contrast
Could instantly tell Pana was on the right. The skintones are so nice.
Currently own the Fx30. Autofocus test had me shook 😭
Good video, but did I hear you not mention the photo features? IMO, that’s one of the most important aspects.
No photo isn't as these are dedicated video cameras not photos which g9ii is
@@harryvlogs7833 I highly disagree. The GH7 has a shutter whereas the FX30 doesn't. What about a hot shoe for flash- also important. The GH7 is a hybrid camera. The Sony is a video camera. That's a major difference.
@CameraCombo no its not the gh line is specifically video with the g9ii being the more hybrid
@@harryvlogs7833 GH is more video but very capable for photos. I have shot 1000s of photos on the GH6.
@@CameraCombo yes but it's still there main video line for video
At the first glance I thought you're comparing Panasonic FX30! I was shocked by the results until I heard you say Sony.
I really wish Panasonic would come out with a Super 35mm censor. I'd grab it in a heartbeat!
GH7 or G9ii. Moving up from the GH5M2. Take 50% pictures and 50% video?
G9II unless you're shooting somewhere really hot in direct sunlight.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy thanks. G9ii. Never gets hot in the UK
