Dude I'm pretty sure you overlooked this sentence in the firmware update guide: "Please ensure the checkbox "Combine OIS and ES for Panasonic" is unchecked". I've tested my GH7 with all metabones adapters (0.71, 0.64, smart adapter) at the newest firmware with lenses sigma 18-35, sigma 40art, canon ef 24-105, the autofocus all works flawlessly.
Yeah reinstall the update and do a new test because this vid makes you look like a dumbass. Like don't even bother looking for a reason why your autofocus doesn't do jack bud. Most of the other videos of the speedbooster update mention this checkbox. Problem solving skills 0/10.
@@TheFlyFishingFilmmaker I am uploading that video right now. I have tested several Sigma EF art lenses with the MB Ultra & XL and it works very very well. Somethings were definitely missed here. Check my video on my testing of the 18-35 on the g9ii.
This video misleads lots of potential users because of the mistakes on updating the Metabones adapter, the user error is hard on this one, my advice is to put it down, this just keeps the bad reputation about the autofocus for lumix cameras.
Having seen this combo actually work in person, and pretty damn well at that, I look forward to the follow-up video after you check the correct box before upgrading. Hopefully, you'll do it soon, as this video is high in the search and is creating the wrong impression. Regards.
Maybe you missed a step updating the firmware - try this? " •Make sure that the ”Combine OIS and ES for Panasonic; legacy AF for Olympus; disable AF for Blackmagic" is turned ’OFF’ in the software menu when you have the speedbooster connected to the computer. Otherwise the PDAF will not function."
I had to update my Metabones again because I didn’t uncheck the box mentioned in this comments but now after unchecking the OIS - Panasonic box the 18-35 works great.
Clearly he didn't do the update properly or there is some issue with his particular lens. Make sure the right boxes are checked as per the instructions given on the updates. The AF isn't perfect but it at least focuses unlike what's shown in this video
I uncheck all of the options in the checkbox on my Speedbooster Ultra, and the focus works pretty good with the Sigma and the GH7. If you check all options it will not work for some reason.
This lens focuses like a frickin' dream on my Canon R7 with the EF-RF adapter. It performs better than ever! Not sure what's going on here, but I would assume it's the speed booster?
With my G9 II and the Viltrox speedbooster; I realised that the Canon 10-18mm works pretty well with phase detect. I feel it is the lens, more than the speedbooster?
Pretty sure Caleb just missed a few steps in the update process, like what others commented. I have the G9II with Metabones with new update + Canon 10-18 as well as Sigma 18-35 and PDAF works surprisingly well here
I also tried AFS mode and had almost the same result. It seems that autofocus not so fast as in AFC mode, but it still very good. No mistakes. Try to check Metabones setting when you connect it to computer. Metabones V4.1 all checkboxes are unchecked.
I have the same issue with my updated metabones .7 adapter as well. I have tried 3 different Canon EF lens, with no luck. My impression was that the firmware would allow AFC mode but it says to switch to AFS whenever the adapter is on my GH7. 🤷♂️. Even in the AFS mode, I get the same results as you do Caleb.
"Please ensure the checkbox "Combine OIS and ES for Panasonic" is unchecked" says in the firmware update guide. Do it and you'll come back and thank me.
@@CalebHoover THANK YOU!! That worked. I also had the Autofocus in Mode 1, and switched to Mode 2. Now, all 3 of my EF lenses (24-105, 100, and 50) are working in AFC mode for human detect. I appreciate it greatly.

Well, I have. And it works perfectly! 😀 So I think it’s time for a I-was-wrong-video, Caleb. That’s no big deal, I’d say, as you normally provide supreme content on your channel.
Facial expressions were great lol. I am thinking about upgrading my gh5 and love the 18-35 lens. It’s unfortunate that gh7 is not working well with it. I may change the entire system.
Btw the speed booster doesn’t make a full frame lens faster. The f1.3 number you see in the screen is not accurate, you still have to do the math but use the f1.3 number and the metabones speed booster number. That will give you a more accurate number but it certainly it’s not faster than F1.7.
no the speedboster does not make the lens faster but it does boost the light amount hitting the m43 sensor therefore giving the camera overall a few stops more, imagine having a 30cm/inch wide bucket that can take 1L of water per hour, now you give it a water source that gives a 60cm/inch bucket 1L of water per hour, if you would straight connect the source of 60cm/inch per hour to the 30cm/inch bucket then it would still fill only 30cm at the time since the other 30cm/inch would just miss the bucket but if you would make a funnel that would convert the 60cm/inch to 30cm/inch then no water would be lost, at the same time boosting the amount of water coming in since the bucket is getting filled at twice the volume, now this analogi can be a bit weird since water has a density and volume that cannot push in more water then it physically can push but light dose not have the same issue since its density is so low and it has no volume so it can push in more light then expected to the sensor
@@dirtystax284 I actually understand how the speed booster works that’s why I said the speed booster doesn’t make an f1.7 lens faster or any lens faster than what it’s on a full frame. I appreciate the you trying to explain it but I never said anything other than what I’ve said 🤣
@@dirtystax284 it’s ok lol I was just confused for a second 🤣 A lot of people think it’s faster than f1.7 because someone said it first on UA-cam and I think everyone learned it from that.
@@CabralCreates Not quite right. The physical lens doesn't become 'faster' but the aperture is indeed larger on MFT than it would be on FF because the MFT sensor is receiving more light than required for it's size. This is exactly the point of a speed booster. To recover additional light from a larger format lens that would normally be lost on a crop sensor. However the FF sensor still receives more light overall and makes up for the lower exposure with ISO.
