Love the tree! I'd never heard "Frankenficus" before, but it's a perfect description. Adding rubbing alcohol to your soap spray will make it more efficient; it helps dissolve the waxy coating on the scale so the soapy water can drown them.
I noticed ladybugs and their larvae are amazing at dealing with scale insects! I had a bit of scale on one of my trees, then I put a ladybug or a ladybug larva on the tree and it immediately started feasting. On the next day, the tree was pest free! It gets more problematic when there are ants though, since the ladybug larvae don't like those. But if you kick the ants off, the ladybugs or their larvae can work! Some dinosaurs might look good in that future sequoia forest! It could make a good Jurassic Park scene :) Anyways, the Fusion Ficus looks nice! I'm sure the care it got helped.
That wind chime was a clever way to create a sound effect for the videos, it helps to minimize the disturbance by engine sounds and other noise. It doesn't cover other sounds, but as a viewer I notice that the chime helps to focus.
Awesome video, you seem to be having a huge insect problem this year! I don't recall it being this bad in previous years. I'm glad that you are getting on top of it and your plants are not being seriously affected by the insect infestations that you have had. Great job!! 👏 👍 👌 🙌 🥰
@@TheBonsaiZone trunk and roots have an entirely different character when you look from the front or the back. In the front view the trunk is visible and it is quite clear what is going on. In the back view there are many aereal roots and the trunk is partly hidden by small branches. It looks a bit mysterious and jungle-like which I find very interesting.
@@TheBonsaiZone Godmorning Nigel, I have a ficus retusa that I been working with for more than 20 years . I used to replant in spring , but This year I didn’t , so its not getting any New leaves, can I replant it now in july or is it dangerous? Please answer🙏🏻
The Ficus has come a long way... I remember it from back before the disaster... surprisingly enough after grafting the top on the stump you ended up with a better tree (in my opinion anyway).
I wonder if a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol would help in removing the scale followed by a good rinse? Tree looks refreshed after all you did to it today.
Extra pests because of the new greenhouse? Maybe you need to a mass soap spray so the infestation doesn't just rotate amongst your trees/never going away
Nigel, if you'd like to be more effective on treating scale insects, my cultivation and garden care teacher who is a agronomist recommended using diatomaceous earth as a combative as well a preventive method. I recommend you to search on the internet about it, it a pretty neat substance. hope it helps or just glat to let you know :)
The Frankenficus is looking good. Enjoyed seeing your work on it. Looks as though all the other trees are enjoying their time outdoors this season. How is the community garden doing?
I really don't think the Ficus Benjamina hates the treatment . On the contrary,ii seems to love the attention .like all the other ones do! It seems to work both ways in my opinion , however ,it is all about the outcome.
Dude this was me last year with scale and I didn’t know how to take care of it and lost almost my whole collection so important to crush those scabs!! I really hope you get on top of it!! I hate scale!!!!!
16:49 - The 2 problems with this species : - leaf size doesn't reduce much, thus forcing a large bonsai - grows very slowly, compared to ficus religiosa Your schefflera tree looks very convincing as a miniaturized version of a big banyan tree. On internet, i have not seen any banyan tree bonsai that mimics the look of a big banyan tree. Surprisingly, other tree species imitate a banyan tree much better. I still have 1 banyan tree in my collection but i am extremely frustrated with it & might sell it off.
heartbreaking when you see one of your babies infested with scale insects. My ginkgo got hit last year and I spend an entire afternoon picking them off and cleaning the black soot. Simple Green spray and Neem Oil are my new best friend now. ❤️🙏🌲
You've inspired me to prune my too little now. The sun got to be to much for it and killed all the leaves on one of the branches so I'm thinking I better wait for leaves to grow back on that branch before I cut it back. What do you think Nigel?
I'm trying really hard to be a practitioner as a poor person. It's been many years. If you don't have land and money, best to pick up a different hobby. Bonsai requires money and land.
Don't give up hope. I have no garden any longer but a balcony where I struggle to keep the trees alive and some are indoors like ficus. My trees will never be awesome specimen but they give me joy tending them and see how they develop - that is enough for me. Most of my trees are from seeds or cuttings not so expensive. If you can keep houseplants alive you got the basic to progress in slow pace - don't be hard on yourself and if you love trees give it a try. Cheers!😊
Try to find a cheap solution for soil, and species that are good for the available windows/places you have. Some succulent are fun and easy starters, like jade or dwarf jade (if you have sunny places indoors). I really hope you can find a way to enjoy your interest in bonsai! Best of luck
Love, Love, Love That Tree!
As I have been following this tree since the beginning, I can say that Nigel is someone who understands the language of plants.
Probably My first bonsai tree will be a Ficus Bemjamina. I hope sometime it'll be as beautiful as yours. Nice work.
This is my second favorite tree you own.

Exactly like the original ficus in nature 🌳
The balances is good to formal naturalis style💚
I like the back of the special tree as well!
Yes, the roots improved a lot at the back today!!

Nigel, love the channel.
Gotta say though that the actual pruning process is far more interesting than spraying with soap and water
It’s a beautiful Ficus Nigel.
While you were removing scale, I was removing hair from Aki! Now she looks just as good as your tree haha
What a beautifu benjamina😍
Thanks, I hope it fills in well this summer!!!

Waiting to see the baobab turn into a bonsai. I have heard that plant thickens up very fast in a large pot.
For some reason I always think this tree is the most Ghibli-esq of your trees. It's really come a long way!

For a moment I was confused by the "fusion ficus" - I was like "wait, isn't it the Frankenficus??" Well, yes it is, I'm just not awake enough yet xD
Amazing Ficus tree, but is not ficus Friday yet Nigel 🤣

Do you have any ideas for a termite infection in a bonsai because my pomegranate bonsai has termites in it.
How many years did it took this beautiful bonsai to grown like that?
I have been growing this tree for about 30 years!

Why dont you ever do any wiring?
He just does cut and grow. He's mentioned that he believes its more natural looking. i tend to argee with him.
Almost forgot to celebrate Friday...
your spray definitely sounds like a duck haha :)
Or maybe his ducks like to quack in time to the sprayer? Funny creatures are ducks!

Insects are always a nuisance. Soap and water method good plus the hand plucking. Sort of a never-ending story, insects.
Oh dear, bug problem. Cleaning a tree from bugs must be one of the least favorite things in plant care.
diatomaceous earth Insecticide !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I look for clearance plants at big box stores (I'm a plant rescuer!), and they end up in a sunny window🙂 it only has to be expensive if you let it.
