I moved into a new freaky house last year. Had a gutter full of soft American maple saplings. I started a forest display, and a group fusion. My inside trees died in the bundle but the outside ring is still alive. We will see what happens. I like your energy and excitment towards your art. Thanks for sharing , keep your videos coming. I hope these clusters make it so I say I saved them from the roof gutter.
You are definitely a big inspiration for these fusions Kennet, and I really appreciate the knowledge you have passed on in your videos, cheers mate. I have only got one more fusion video to come. Hawthorn and I also made a silver birch off-camera.
Hi Tony I think your onto a winner! Freaky can be beautiful and I believe this tree will prove that! Great work, great video as usual! I really do like the way your freaky little mind works! Thanks for more insight and inspiration!
I've had a similar idea for the whole winter now, but maybe with younger seedlings. My spark for the idea was the frustration with tap roots. You always have to remove the one massive root for allowing the smaller roots grow nice and radially. But I thought what if I made a clump and just bend the tap roots outwards radially. I've been planning on a redicoulus wooden contraption with grooves for the roots and holes drilled for some wire to secure the roots into the grooves. Spring is still depressingly far away so it'll be a couple of months before I get to test my idea. Until then I'll just soak up inspiration from your videos. Cheers from Finland!
Hi Jani. That sounds like a crazy contraption in the making there, but definitely great potential to create a stunning tree. I think using younger seedlings will be easier, but you will obviously need a lot more trees to get a decent trunk. Also a second pair of hands will be very handy!
I am still on the fence about fusion bonsai, but I will give it a go. The "UGLY" tree could turn out to be a very nice bonsai, once you put it together I thought it looked good. all the best Rich
If you had put this out in four more days it could have been Freaky Friday! I've got a load of 3 year old oak saplings waiting to be bound together. Looks like I will have to get a move on. I definitely think this could be a more magical spooky tree creation where you actually maximise the amount of roots showing. That could look brilliant in a few years.
Cheers mate. I did a two tree clump last year and it is looking like they are going to merge nicely, so I will definitely be looking forward to seeing your multi oak fusion project. I reckon it will be really cool, and if I were you, I would definitely go with the second method I used in this video. It worked a treat.
I have no plans to stop any time soon Bradley, but who knows what the future holds. I'll definitely be updating on these in the spring when they come into leaf.
These sort of fusions are in my future but I haven't yet attempted any. I will definitely be referencing your videos when I do. When you described the "ugly exposed root" concept the first time, I had thought you were going to do something altogether different. This video gives me some great inspiration.
You should definitely go for it mate. Putting them together is fun, but the real joy will be when they hopefully survive and I can reveal them next spring.
Freaky bonsai are my style. I have a small ceder I found growing out of a glass coke bottle I found on the train tracks. I often cant see the forest through the bonsai trees. I have tee shirts printed. I like looking at what the power line crews do to mature trees, or trees growing and overtaking fence lines.
What a great video? I wouldn't say that this tree is more freaky than some of the bends that you create on other trees, which completely freak me out waiting for the "crack". At least this time I wasn't watching heart in mouth. This should make a really good tree in a few years. Only time will tell.
🤣as the first person to use the word freaky twice, you get your name in the pot twice Mick! The second tree in particular I think could be a beauty down the line.
FREAKY…Tony All your fusion projects are going to be very interesting to follow into the future. I’m a bit skeptical about obtaining fusion using the vet tape. I’m thinking that 1, the tape is too flexible and will expand with the growth until it bursts and 2, the integrity of the tapes binding strength will deteriorate before fusion is obtained. Time will tell. Thanks, keep growing
You make a good point, and it's certainly going to be very interesting to see how these experiments get on. If you are correct I will have to re-apply the tape and add some wire ontop, but I think I will get away with just re-applying the tape in twelve months or so.
@TonysBonsai yeh I'm only doing it because they sprout up all round my garden so it's good practice, practicing on them and then if I make any mistakes no biggy as I have hundreds more dotted around the garden 😅🤣🤣
Cool contest idea. I don't use calendars, so I'll let others have a crack at it. But watching this, the tree you ended up in the center looked like it had 2 layers of really nice nebari. Was it an optical illusion on the video?
Ah yes, I get what you are saying. I think the main nebari was at the bottom, then there were three roots in another nebari above it. Weird tree that one
Butt ugly Beech become a fantastically freaky pneumonia. That was a great result BendyMaster Tony, I hope they all live and become a freaky fusion fantasy for the future. Okay thats enough F words...i best stop before i go to far mate 😁
Hey Tony. Loving the FREAKY fusion content your pumping out at the moment. I'm definitely going to carve a wooden form and try this, maybe with some bird cherry cuttings I have from a few years ago. Just a thought... It would probably be worth taking the time to strip out all those dead leaves prior to wiring in the future. Those compact and dense clusters of old foliage could develop mould and will be perfect for harbouring insects and parasites. By removing the leaves you will allow better airflow through the cluster and prevent these issues from developing. Also, the density of the dead foliage within the cluster will restrict the trees ability to push out new growth due to the limited light penetrating in amongst the branches. Like I said, just a though. Keep up the inspiring work!
@@TonysBonsai Never before has there been a more legitimate reason for not doing something... 😅 Just give them a good shake in a few weeks time and see what falls off haha

Cheers Paul. I think I'll possibly release a calendar later in the year, and I also fancy creating some merch too. Maybe hoodies and t-shirts. I'm looking into it at the moment.
Dr Frankenbeech. Freaky! What is your intention longer term with that central piece of wood? Will this stay? Or will you remove? I also wonder if you might be better ground planting then, maybe over a tile or slab, to get accelerated growth and fusion.
I may opt to remove the stick when the trees have fused, but as John says, it will probably just stay there and rot away as it is made out of softwood. As for the ground planting, I like that idea, but I prefer putting them in a large pot for a year or two first to help to grow a tighter root system. The ground around here is heavy clay and although trees eventually do well in it, they don't tend to thrive in their first year.
I already have a beech forest John and I have plans for more forests this year with different species, so One beech forest is enough for em as they take a lot of work to maintain.
Hey Tony! another cool project! I had an idea with fusion. What if one was to create a star shape (in place of the circular cone) to create exaggerated trunk fluting? I need to order a bunch of saplings! :)
Me neither Brian. I'm hoping that in a couple of years we'll start to see them fuse and with a bit of luck these will be really interesting projects that keep improving with age.
That would have been a good idea. I've planted them out in the ground, but I could do that in the future if I don;t need then to fill in the gaps if trees die off.
