Oh man, the pain on Nigel’s face with some of the major cuts. But it definitely needs it. Still pretty painful to watch. I’ve had no shortage of work these last couple weeks. Getting my tropical in order. And all my Cold Hardy trees are waking up. So I’m getting them pruned or repotted. Had a few still in nursery pots that finally got into training pots. Can’t wait for part 2.👍😁

Just another normal day over there: trains plowing by, sirens racing to stymie the zombie apocalypse, airplanes video bombing the show, roosters crowing and crows clawing. All that's missing is your whip-happy neighbour!
I'm taking a lot from the pruning vid, Nigel, I'm starting to feel a little less intimidated by the prospect of pruning certain plants now, thanks! Keep up the good work.

Very nice watching the structure of this tree emerge from the overabundance of similarly sized twigginess. The taper of major branches becoming more evident as the skeleton is simplified-- exactly the effect you were looking for. Added bonus of the simplification is that the tree appears older.. The reduced scale of the new growth in relation to the now-more-evident structure will amplify that impression. Good stuff happening here! Onward!

Great work. Its a improvement of the tree. In part 2. I really hope you take the big air root off. Is really getting thick and is no longer in scale to the tree. Is creating invors taper too. Her we go! Big cut comming up!

@@JackC1961 it’s not so much surviving the trip but passing the UK regulations for importing any plant. Nigel would have to jump through all the hurdles of generating a phytosanitary certificate, plus all the declarations that go with that. Without one it would most likely just get destroyed on entry. It’s probably not worth the effort or the risk of breaking import laws.

Throughout truly tropical Tuesday today, tender twigs thrive towards the tree top technically transgressing trim theory: they’re truncated tidy, turning tips tinier to tolerate true transpiration. Tie trunk tributaries to try training thightly, testing Nigel's tokerance though. Trashing the tuber’s tap tethers the tree to tremendous terracottas too.

I have an enormous Ficus Microcarpa that I'm pretty sure is the same as yours, Nigel. I got mine from a local store and have been slowly reducing it. I had to cut over half of the branches just to get it through the door for the winter! Once it gets outside for the summer, I plant to do some major chops, but cannot decide if I should keep it a triple trunk or go down to a single trunk. Like you said though, work for the future and do what's best for the tree.

I had a huge scale bug problem last year, I think I’m ahead of it I also do the same strategy scrape off the visible bug and spray with soap, can’t just spray it because the exoskeleton keeps it save and the eggs are inside that so scraping them is tedious but necessary!

Talk about scale.. I had taken a load of cuttings from my variegated benjamina.. had a look at them today and they were riddled with scale.. They had also spread to a few of my cacti.. That was it.. everything has been done today with soap and neem oil.. Will be keeping my eye on them..
Also.. I bought a prickly pear pad last year (it’s intended use being tortoise food) well I planted it.. It rooted really quickly and in the last 2 weeks it has grown 2 new pads! 😂 we affectionately call it “The mouldy naan bread plant” 🤣

Beautiful Ficus! So glad that you are aware of aspects of dealing with a large tree. We used to have an elderly couple who would bring in forests on hand trucks for bonsai meetings. They were beautiful bonsai, but I always wondered how they dealt with the size of the trees (weight, etc.). I reduced my collection several years ago as I began to realize what a struggle it was to lift the larger trees. At that time I moved into medium or smaller trees in the collection. I do have one forest, but it isn't so large that I can't lift it alone. Can you possibly let me know your address again as I now have some seeds ready for you.
