Used to own a hack of this back in the day, without knowing that it was a hack, where instead of a vampire and the monster, you could play as Batman and Flash.
I LOVED these toys as a kid. Had a ton of them. What's cool is seriously every single enemy in this game is one of the toys. I loved this game too as a kid. Rented it from the local grocery store, and then later in my early teens when they were discontinuing their rental business they were selling all their stock dirt cheap so I bought this game for a few bucks.
This is one of the rare times I've watched you guys playing a game that I haven't and thought to myself 'Ya know that actually looks fun to play.' Love watching all your stuff guys :)
So many awesome late generation NES games that are overlooked because everyone moved on to the 16-bit consoles. This is great one, and also Bucky O'Hare, as Mike mentions. Also Little Sampson, Panic Restaurant, Felix the Cat, Wacky Races, Ducktales 2... Tons of great games.
When Helium is cooled to almost absolute zero (-460°F or -273°C), the lowest temperature possible, it becomes a liquid with surprising properties: it flows against gravity and will start running up and over the lip of a glass container!
This game was my jam when I was a kid! Fun game to play with friends. I used to put all my monsters in camera roll cases, like they were containment vats. I've said too much.
Best games with 5 stages that I can think of: Ducktales (NES) Ikaruga (GCN) Altered Beast (Gen) Double Dragon (NES) (I think only 4 stages?) Desert Strike: Return To The Gulf (Gen) (Also only 4 stages?) Bart Vs The Space Mutants (NES)
I was thinking about Batman for NES actually and I could see an argument being made on both sides since the game breaks up the stages into parts like 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3; it's a much more seamless separation than in a game like how SMB breaks up their substages (with the flagpole marker as the end), but since when you die in Batman you re-spawn at the beginning of whichever substage you're at I could see the argument for saying that although there are 5 stages, there's technically more than 5 levels.
BlaZeon for the SNES has 5 levels and is pretty good. Bart vs. Space Mutants was pretty good if you could master the messed up controls. Double Dragon 3 has 5 stages but has special moves that work when they want to and a steep difficulty curve right from the start.
I remember that I got the Monster in My Pocket book to my birthday when I was little. All of the monsters in the game were also in that book. Even the monster designs in the game are directly taken from the images of the book.
Amazing how big and detailed the players sprites are and how intricate their walking cycle is, regarding it's an NES game. Those developers for sure knew how to get the best out of the Hardware :)
Used to own the hacked version of this game; 'Flash and Batman' on famicom. Didn't realize until recently that this was the original version of this game.
There was a famicom bootleg of this game in the 90's , The Flash and the Batman. They changed the sprites to the said DC superheroes. It was also an early romhacked game that put into a famicom cartridge. It was priced like $15 at that time in my place.
It is one of few NES games I've played during childhood. Dude, I almost weep for this vid. BTW, I think the obstruction of column is kinda cool actually.
I found this game as a bootleg called "Batman & Flash" Their sprites were more or less edited to resemble them. I wondered why they didn't use their actual powers or why the hell everything around them was gigantic. Then I finished the game and the credits still said "Monsters in my pocket". Then I realized why all those characters looked so familiar.
It's so great to see you guys play this game. I've been wanting you to play it for quite a long time. I even sent an email to James asking if you could check this game out. That's a huge fan service to me (even if accidental). This is one of my childhood games. It brings back so many memories. I used to play the shit out it together with my next-door neighbour and my aunt. Ah, good old days :-)
I willing to bet $50 that the lag and sprite flicker at the end was done on purpose. It breaks the fourth wall by interacting with your TV, as it fits the end boss theme.
I used to collect the figurines as a kid! I remember having the ghost that's holding its head! I played this game on a Nintendo console rip-off when I was young
All I remember about Monster in My Pocket was a bunch of glow in the dark heads with detachable faces you'd get as a prize in packs of fries. There were all sorts of prizes over the years, all tiny collectibles of some sort until that practice was discontinued.
OMG I used to have all the toys in my early teenage years. Painted them and kept them in a curio cabinet. Not only did they remind me of M.U.S.C.L.E. figures from my youth, but I was always fascinated with monsters of various folklore. My dad made me get rid of the collection when he found out one of the figures was the beast of Revelations. Never played the game, though, because I had a Genesis at the time and started letting my NES collect dust for a while.
This was one of my childhood favorites when I found it at a rental shop. I think it was mostly because I was also collecting the toys and card combo packs at the time. Still have some of the cards. They where cool because there was a description of each monster and where it came from, and yes, most of them are from classic legends. Cool game with lots of nostalgia if you ever got into any of the toys or comics. I do agree it is on the easy side, but not all games have to be balls hard!
If you don't know the minifigures you won't get all the references: the "monkey" is Behemoth, "king Ghidorah" is Great Beast, the big boss with tentacles is Kraken, etc. The game is incredibly faithful to them, they're just identical.
I really like these as a child wanted to collect them all, especially the top tier and rare ones like hydra and the great beast. I like the little Bio each one had, it really got me into monsters folk lore and legend.
If you're from Eastern Europe or Balkans you probably remember this game as Flash & Batman. Somebody hacked the ROM, changed the main sprites, and distributed it like that on the Famiclone cartridges.
one of my favs from my childhood, mice music, characters, not too hard, nice bosses, double jump, fun coop + u play as mini toy in huge world like kitchen, street .. i could also reccomend other fun balanced games, like three eyes and samurai ninja cats :)
From what I've heard, it was because in the 80s there was a pen-and-paper RPG called Dragon Quest but Square Enix got the name trademarked when they finally brought Dragon Quest VIII to America in the early 2000s.
The graphics/animation are really excellent and fluid in this game, flickering aside.
The game definitely pushed NES to its limits. But it looks great.
Great late NES releases ... Kirby’s Adventure (93), Tiny Toon Adventures 2 (93), DuckTales 2 (93), Rescue Rangers 2 (94), StarTropics II (94)
One of my favorite games when I was a kid, great to see you guys playing it.
PrimeTimeJprime thank you
CUZC0M thank you
Kennedy
The only one here with a monster in their pocket is Mike.
DatBoy SoTalented mikes 20 inch monster
Open goal lol
It's a known fact that Mike makes Roberto Esquivel Cabrera look small. Unlike that Mexican guy it made Mike the handsome and awesome guy he is today.
What is all this recently about Mikes schlong lol
***** I've seen it in the past every once and a while, but it's all over every video lately it seems.
Definitely not new here lol
This game is the reason why Pokémon is not called Pocket Monsters outside Japan. Wrap your head around that.
@Marcifar: Pokémon has a much better ring to it, anyway.
Pocket Monsters: You have got to catch all of them!
Pokémon is the best thing Nintendo ever did for the franchise. Pocket Monsters would definitely not have sold as well; it's just not as marketable.
Miniature Abominations: Acquire each of the species in existence!
Marcifar, yeah they just shortened the words, Poke-t Mon-sters
Among my favorite games from the NES, no doubt.
Used to own a hack of this back in the day, without knowing that it was a hack, where instead of a vampire and the monster, you could play as Batman and Flash.
I was looking for this comment
haha
I was going to say that!
Yup, I remember it! ;) I just wanted to say, when I was a child, the intro of this game scared me so hard... :(
I LOVED these toys as a kid.
Little Nemo's Dream World is probably my favorite late, forgotten NES game
This is one of the rare times I've watched you guys playing a game that I haven't and thought to myself 'Ya know that actually looks fun to play.'
Love watching all your stuff guys :)
Tons of great games.
deezy81 So smart. I was busy with my SNES--which was also awesome--but I regret selling off my original NES and games. I had a great library.
He goes where no ordinary rabbit would dare.
When Helium is cooled to almost absolute zero (-460°F or -273°C), the lowest temperature possible, it becomes a liquid with surprising properties: it flows against gravity and will start running up and over the lip of a glass container!
Journey to Silius has 5 stages. It has kick-ass music by Sunsoft and is one of my favorite childhood games.
7:15 A sample of Joey Lawrence saying "WHOA" was used in Wario's Woods. Also, Monster in My Pocket is my favorite Alannis Morsette song.
This game was my jam when I was a kid! Fun game to play with friends. I used to put all my monsters in camera roll cases, like they were containment vats. I've said too much.
Back than I had a bootleg version of this game named Batman and Flash, it was a fun game :D.
Yeah, I had that one too. I also got this one later. One of them was in a many-in-one cartridges.
Same, dude :)
I played that one. XD
nice, I just played this game on my channel it's is really fun game to play.
i loved that one, much latter I found out that it wasn't a real Batman game
This was one of my favorite games on NES as a kid but I could never remember the name of the game, thanks guys, nice nostalgia trip.
I've been waiting for this video for the last 6 years. Now my life is complete.
Best games with 5 stages that I can think of:
Ducktales (NES)
Ikaruga (GCN)
Altered Beast (Gen)
Double Dragon (NES) (I think only 4 stages?)
Desert Strike: Return To The Gulf (Gen) (Also only 4 stages?)
Bart Vs The Space Mutants (NES)

Nathan Swanson Yeah, I don't really consider Bart Vs The Space Mutants to be a good game, but it is an iconic NES title
Sapphire - PC Engine CD
sorry but altered beast is one of worst games on genesis
I've been waiting so long for you guys to play this!
I remember that I got the Monster in My Pocket book to my birthday when I was little. All of the monsters in the game were also in that book. Even the monster designs in the game are directly taken from the images of the book.
love the gg allin reference
Amazing how big and detailed the players sprites are and how intricate their walking cycle is, regarding it's an NES game. Those developers for sure knew how to get the best out of the Hardware :)
One of my favourite NES game. I used to play this a lot when I was a kid. I'm glad you guys decided to play this.
I had boxes full of "Monster in my Pocket" toys as a kid. Seeing the sprites of the figures I used to play with is fun, takes me back.
There's a monster in my pants, and it does a naughty dance. When it walks into a room, people hit it with a broom
Mask/go-bots/gummy bears/record breakers/Heathcliff all needed video games
Batman NES is one of the best games with 5 stages, and you played that one Mike!!!
12:20 Yeah Mike. We know you love mad balls.
He loves his own Madballs
+Grim Piñata And that maddick.
+I'm there for the aesthetics. (I'm regretting this name.) dumb animeme poster
***** Does your mother have mad balls, because that's out of the ordinary.
Used to own the hacked version of this game; 'Flash and Batman' on famicom. Didn't realize until recently that this was the original version of this game.

I loved this game as a kid, even now I can complete it in no time. It's like riding a bike.
I collected the shit outta those toya back in the day. Still have them in the loft.
Smithers, there's a monster in my pocket!
You don't have to tell me, sir!
Batman and Flash in Eastern-Europe on chinese/russian Famiclone systems :) Loved it as a child, and I still love this! A truly hidden gem.
Whoa, I collected these as a kid, and now wish I had this game.
Maybe in next episode: Bucky o Hare (NES)? Please!
It is one of few NES games I've played during childhood.
Dude, I almost weep for this vid.
BTW, I think the obstruction of column is kinda cool actually.
Best game with 5 stages = "Journey to Silius"
I remember when Monster In My Pocket toys came in Shreddies cereal for awhile back in the early 90s. Never played this game though!
I found this game as a bootleg called "Batman & Flash" Their sprites were more or less edited to resemble them. I wondered why they didn't use their actual powers or why the hell everything around them was gigantic. Then I finished the game and the credits still said "Monsters in my pocket". 8:06 Hahaha sounds like the tail end of the Wilhelm scream
Awesome, this was me and my sisters go-to multiplayer game growing up, along with Bubble Bobble..
It's so great to see you guys play this game. I've been wanting you to play it for quite a long time. I even sent an email to James asking if you could check this game out. That's a huge fan service to me (even if accidental). This is one of my childhood games. It brings back so many memories. Who would have guessed Mike was a GG fan
That was a pretty neat visual effect for the TV boss at the end, it did come at the cost of the console performance tanking though.
Loved this game as a kid
I loved this game as a Kid, rented it so often.
lol madballs, that's going waaaaay back. I remember I had a giant eyeball called oculus orbus. Haven't thought of that in years.
loved this game as a kid. used to do high score runs on this one.
Mike's got a monster in his pocket ... Both pockets its so much monster.
Mike, I love this game. I rented it once when I was a kid. Simple and fun game to play....One of my favorites NES Games....
I willing to bet $50 that the lag and sprite flicker at the end was done on purpose. It breaks the fourth wall by interacting with your TV, as it fits the end boss theme.
It’s just a hardware limitation. The nes only could display 8 sprites per scanline.
It was so funny how they didn't laugh when mike said "I love mad balls" hahahaha
Mike, don't worry. I caught your low-key GG Allin reference.

Is that a monster in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
Trillyana It's my pocket cucumber.
Rylo Ken Kylo Ren
Trillyana Happy to see you.
My eyes are up here, just don't look at it.
Hes name is pinokio bitch and your lies and manipulations Will Only make him pulsating mad! :)
This is game of my childhood. Thanx for vid!

This was one of my favorite games back in the day. I used to rent this one a lot.
I've been watching all the old videos and trying to figure out when Mike started getting stoned, I can dig it !!
You didn't just quote GG Allin, did you? (at 6:41)
This channel never fails to amaze me. :D
If you don't know the minifigures you won't get all the references: the "monkey" is Behemoth, "king Ghidorah" is Great Beast, the big boss with tentacles is Kraken, etc. The game is incredibly faithful to them, they're just identical.
never heard of this nes game but I remember seeing the animated special on abc when I was 8 in 1992 do remember the comic books too
Thanks for the video! Entertaining as always !
This game actually looks a lot more solid than I was anticipating. Looks like a fun co op game.
Your GG reference has not gone unnoticed Mike.
Man this game takes me back. I rented this as a kid and loved it. Really good NES graphics and art style, not super hard, just a good game
It's probably much easier with two players, I don't remember it being a cakewalk
I had the gryphon as a kid. I just remembered that seeing them.
I got some serious SotN Alucard vibes from the vampire's sprite animation here.
this was one of my favs growing up
I really like these as a child wanted to collect them all, especially the top tier and rare ones like hydra and the great beast. I like the little Bio each one had, it really got me into monsters folk lore and legend.

Can't wait for the full 31 day monster madness next year James!
Mike knew exactly what he was doing when he suggested they play a game called "Monster in my Pocket".
I still have the Monster in my pocket toys, those cheap but awesome single colored little buggers. :P Collected the crap out of them!
I really liked this game as a kid, I forgot about it until now.
It's nice that they've got a little bit of parallax scrolling in the ground
My brothers and I played this all the time growing up.
One of my all time favorites. In my country Monsters In My Pockets came inside chocolate bars.
this franchise is the reason why pokemon isn't called pocket monsters in America
I know! Allt hat's left is to find the game that prevented Dragon Quest to be called that outside of Japan.
From what I've heard, it was because in the 80s there was a pen-and-paper RPG called Dragon Quest but Square Enix got the name trademarked when they finally brought Dragon Quest VIII to America in the early 2000s.
yea and I'm glad cuz Pokemon sounds better than pocket monsters
alejorag Yeah I heard pen-and-paper game was called Dragonquest, without a space.
^ Yeah, what he said, was a pen & paper D&D type of game
I loved this game as a kid.
Have you all played that one game with your creepy uncle called Rocket in My Pocket...
I rented this game a lot when I was a kid. Also own the cartoon series on VHS.
Loved this game as a kid!
I remember renting this as a kid. Good rental, I liked it.
The game Wolf Child for the Super Nintendo haves 5 stages too. Is 3rd in my list of favorite games for that system.
Mike needs to sing that whole GG Allin song.
8:55 "Coming down to the wire like a thoroughbred." rofl it is at this moment Mike knew... the jokes were coming
This game it´s awesome!!!! The music! Damn!!!!
I love when ever American gladiator is mentioned in these videos they always cut away to it lmfao! 😂
Probably one of the greatest games to ever grace the NES, Ducktales, only had 5 stages.
I just realized how emo mike's voice is.
Ravioli, Ravioli, what's in the pocket-oli.
Pussy-oli
Garrick Groover Nice meme
OOOOHH!
that kid is disturbed. sacrifices.
interesting, thanks for letting me know about a new classic game i never heard of! ill have to check it out, looks great
This was seriously my favorite coop games growing up, better than contra to me at the time.
at 7:15 is that an opium pipe? Since the level had "Oriental" in the name that would be funny.
