It's funny how James is always so calm in these videos, while Mike just goes all-out with rage whenever things don't go his way. I guess James was able to get the anger out of his system with all those AVGN episodes
Trees with faces: The Great Deku Tree? Grandmother Willow? Treebeard? Cherrymon and Woodmon? Phantump and Trevenant? Any animatronic talking tree from amusement parks? Haunted tree decorations for Halloween?
Only game where you fight Breaded shrimp 3:49. There's a prototype to this game with a few differences like the inclusion of Gremlins, Alien, The Thing, Planet of the Apes & Jason. The title screen is also red instead of green.
I used to love this game when I was a kid. Just hearing the name made my eyes so moist that I couldn't see the giant gargoyle sitting on my couch...and then we fused together!
A ton of these weird monsters, like the fish with human legs(Ningyo), the dog with a human head (Jinmenken), the umbrella monster (Kasa-Obake) , are actually straight out of Japanese mythology or urban legend and widely known in Japan. Kinda like how we have Yeti, Slenderman, Chupacabra, and Bigfoot over here in the west. Just thought I'd explain it for anyone who is interested or wondering where did they come up with such weird monsters.
*Mike*: And if you ever wonder why it wasn't an AVGN video... *James*: I tried it and it wasn't bad! Next scene, James dies and has to do the level all over.
How did they not pick up on the references? When they fought the Pumpkin monster, it said "don't pick on me" a clear Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin reference, which they say they love, and also when fighting the shrimp, how did he not notice "The Fly" pods in the back? That's also one of his favorite movies? Oh well.
When I got my NES for Christmas, I was five years old. I had seen this game at a local store, and like Mike said, thought the cover looked completely awesome, so I begged for it. Well, I ended up getting it for my birthday (February, so not long as I got the NES for Christmas.) I loved this game so much as a kid, as you just saw it's hard as hell, but I did end up beating it finally as a kid and it has a really cool ending too. At least I thought so as a kid.
What are the odds you guys would play this and make a vid after I just picked it up a week ago. This classic was of mine and my best friends favorite games as kids. I just grabbed it recently considering it's that time of the year for spooky halloween fun. It took me almost 20 YEARS to remember the name of this title, I just saw it recently on Metal Jesus Rocks vids and nearly crapped my pants. The wiggly legs sticking out of the ground, the eyeball creatures, and the crazy bosses found all throughout the game brought my childhood back to life. So glad you guys picked this up
I've been trying to find this game for years. I was three when I saw this game, my father I think, and understand that memories from being a three year old are questionable at best, had rented it. Not so much "looking" for this game, but I remembered my father playing a Nintendo game where fish with legs kept killing him. The few things that I can remember from nearly 27 years ago, and this is one of them, and now I know what I had been watching.
One of the magic ones with you two taking us back to being a kid, having your mate over skipping school and finishing games on the retro stuff. Thank you for taking me back!
No reaction to the level 1 transforming into hell? That is the best part of the game and certainly has a lasting effect. I'm surprised there wasn't even a little mention.
Fuck yeah man that was fucking disturbing and shit to me when I was a kid as well. Probably the biggest shock of the game, because it comes out of nowhere and you are wondering "WTF did I get myself into?"
This was always one of my favorite NES games. It's one of those perfectly 90s games that nostalgia bombs me. Another NES game that makes me feel like that is "Totally Rad."
IDK, I feel like there's something be said for these old school games that didn't coddle you through everything with checkpoints and copious amounts of power-ups. The satisfaction you get after beating a game like this is far superior to beating most games nowadays. Well played!
The food boss and the capsules are a reference to The Fly, actually thinking about it it could be The Fry? In the prototype the cat is indeed a gremlin. I really hope you guys finish it to see the ending it's very worth it.
James and Mike Mondays has to be the only thing to look forward to on a Monday as anyone who works a 9-5 will know for sure. Good work James and Mike, keep up the good work!
This was a great game simply because the designers committed to a gameplay model where you fight two or three mini bosses per level, and ended up needing so many that they were just taking random stupid suggestions by the middle of the game. "How about you have to fight Elvis? Maybe you interrupted his dinner and have to battle it too?"
One of my favorites on the NES. There's a weird level with pairs of pants attacking you. The ending use to creep me out when you deteriorated after being attacked.
Fun fact. This game only released in USA. There also a Japanese version, but never came out. A prototype version of the Japanese version exist somewhere, but never been found. Only a few screenshots were uploaded by unknown users. The Japanese version is slightly different to the american version.
I got this game as a Christmas present as a kid. It was one of those games that when your friends came over, they always wanted to try it because they never heard of it. That one, and all three Adventure Island games for the NES were the most popular part of my collection.
Half of Monster Party is mastering how to hit projectiles back at enemies with the bat; you can kill enemies without getting hit, like the scorpions that hang out above you in Stage 4, and you can also kill otherwise invincible enemies, like the boulders in the same stage. It also helps to duck under bosses, and then jump after they pass over, rising behind, brandishing your bat; it hits multiple times, and once you get good at it, you're more powerful as Mark than as Bert.
I remember beating this game when I was younger, and in all due honesty, there are a lot of much harder games out there...like Out of this World, which I never got much farther than the underground lake area...
Zé do Caixão rules!!! \m/ BTW: Zé do Caixão is the translation for Coffin Joe. He's a director, movie maker and actor here in Brasil. He hosted "Tales From The Crypt" here back in the day. Nice to hear you guys know his work.
Was introduced to this game by my neighbor back in the 80's... Own a copy of it to this day and is definitely one of my childhood faves. A true hidden gem of the NES
There's a surprising amount of depth to this game. Trying to run around as Bert most of the time isn't always the best idea since reflected projectiles do a LOT more damage to some enemies and only Mark's bat can return them to sender. But yeah, lots of grinding for health.
Wrong. In level 7 if you beat 2 of the bosses you get the key but if you beat a third you lose it.(confirmed) But it's level 6 that really pisses me off.
OMFG now I can die in peace, James mentioned "This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse" from Coffin Joe. He's a brazilian horror legend, here we know him as "Zé do Caixão". It was awesome to see that you guys know him.
One of my all time favorites. Everyone I show it to always thinks it's funny and interesting. It's a great conversation starter type game. A great single player game to play with a friend, especially if they aren't into NES.
Top 5 fav game here, even more interesting when I found out it was supposed to be Hollywood Monsters but they of course couldn't get the rights. You could tell though with the Audrey from Little shop of horrors that it was something unique, and the changes from Japan to US are worth checking out
The trick to this game is to find an enemy that frequently gives up hearts then farm it until you have a full health meter. I've beaten this game many times as a kid.
If you kill a monster, and it gives you a heart, move away and the monster will re-spawn, kill it for another heart. You can continue this for around 10 hearts. If you're good enough, you're health meter could be huge.
1:58 I remember one late night TCM was playing "This Night I Will Possess Your Corpse" and had no idea there was a "Coffin Joe" trilogy behind it. In my opinion it can stand on it's own as a good horror film.
I had this as a kid, man, this game was WAAAAY to hard for a little kid to play and I was born a few years before the NES even came to the states. I did get to see my friend beat it though. It took hours.
Seeing you guys mentioning Mr. Mojica, the Coffin Joe, is priceless. I have a friend who is a personal friend of him. Unfortunately Mr. Mojica is very sick...
A lot of people don't get this, but the thing with the fried shrimp with the two pods is actually a parody of "The Fly" but with fried food, "The Fry"
Vortan The Toaster I just thought they put it in for lols. Either way, it's pretty great. xD
you just blew my mind
Holy....
That... of course it is. Wow. Good job on that find.
the japanese always struggled with the "r"s and "l"s
One of the overlooked gems of this game. It's really clever and funny. This is a perfect example.
"Sorry, I'm Dead" 2:08. One of the best lines.
What a polite young fellow.
+Mega Man I SUBSCRIBE TO YOUR CHANNEL JAMES AND MIKE
"Sorry, I died." - PeanutButterGamer
in that room you can kill the fly for a bonus. hard to hit, but works.
Who said the evil monsters can't be educate?
It's funny how James is always so calm in these videos, while Mike just goes all-out with rage whenever things don't go his way. I guess James was able to get the anger out of his system with all those AVGN episodes
"I've seen trees with faces. Well, not in real life but--" Thanks for clarifying that, James. xD
Ive seen trees with faces while on acid..hell yeah
Never seen a tree smile? Ur not nature-ing right!...lol!
Trees with faces: The Great Deku Tree? Grandmother Willow? Treebeard? Cherrymon and Woodmon? Phantump and Trevenant? Any animatronic talking tree from amusement parks? Haunted tree decorations for Halloween?
I absolutely love this game. I bought it on a blind buy back in 1998 when I was a kid and played the hell out of it.
Only game where you fight Breaded shrimp 3:49.
There's a prototype to this game with a few differences like the inclusion of Gremlins, Alien, The Thing, Planet of the Apes & Jason. The title screen is also red instead of green.
I USE TO HAVE THIS VIDEO GAME ON NINTENDO CONSOLE
Floating Tempura.
Kid Icarus Uprising has tempura wizards. XD
It's tempura shrimp
I used to love this game when I was a kid. Just hearing the name made my eyes so moist that I couldn't see the giant gargoyle sitting on my couch...and then we fused together!

Just thought I'd explain it for anyone who is interested or wondering where did they come up with such weird monsters.
Reminds me of Yo-kai Watch.
@5:55 AVGN moment XD
*Mike*: And if you ever wonder why it wasn't an AVGN video...

lol 9:30 james seems more shocked at mike's freak out than he is at the games difficulty

Takes me back to that JonTron episode
Mudkip971 fish heAD ON LEGS
Do you want the fish? Do YOU want the fish?!?
+Mudkip971 Same
Mudkip971 yep
Yea I think they watched that episode before they did this since they had a lot of the same jokes.
Monster Party (NES) Part 2 sent me here!
Gonna take you back to the past...literally lol
Me too. I didn't know they released part 2 a day ago.
No reaction to the level 1 transforming into hell? That is the best part of the game and certainly has a lasting effect. I'm surprised there wasn't even a little mention.
Seriously. I was like wtf he's skipping over everything. That was freaky for kids to see in the game.
Oh yeah, that scared the crap out of me too when I was like 8 years old.
Fuck yeah man that was fucking disturbing and shit to me when I was a kid as well. Probably the biggest shock of the game, because it comes out of nowhere and you are wondering "WTF did I get myself into?"
I recognize your pfp
Absolutely one of my favorite NES games. Had the weirdest mildly out of body experience playing this when I was a kid.
This was always one of my favorite NES games. It's one of those perfectly 90s games that nostalgia bombs me. Another NES game that makes me feel like that is "Totally Rad."
I rented this so many times as a kid. I always loved the music when the level transforms.
Do James and Mike Darkstalkers! There's some REAL Monster Madness...
Aw yeah, they totally should!
"Tree's with a face"? Damn Mike actually didn't mention Zelda?!.. He is slacking with his Zelda obsession! lol
I thought about those fuck ass trees in runescape that break your axe
☤INFiNiTE▼C0NSCi0US☤ The Living Forest from Mortal Kombat II !
Exdeath is my favourite tree with a face though
Whispy Woods anyone?
1:15 sounds like cristopher walken reading the plot
Wow this takes me back... this game used to give me the creeps.
I USE TO HAVE GAME GENIE WITH THE COLD BOOK TOO
Did it give you frostbite?
IDK, I feel like there's something be said for these old school games that didn't coddle you through everything with checkpoints and copious amounts of power-ups. The satisfaction you get after beating a game like this is far superior to beating most games nowadays. Well played!

this is my favorite NES game. I've only been able to play roms of it. the cartridge is next to impossible to find. what an acid trip
One of the most underrated games on the NES.
One of my favorites on the NES. There's a weird level with pairs of pants attacking you. The ending use to creep me out when you deteriorated after being attacked.
Hitch holding that NES cart really made me laugh!
Fun fact. This game only released in USA. There also a Japanese version, but never came out.
A prototype version of the Japanese version exist somewhere, but never been found. Only a few screenshots were uploaded by unknown users. The Japanese version is slightly different to the american version.
Kyo Saeba A ROM of the Famicom prototype was released a couple of years ago. ☺️
Fun fact: You don't have any.
And you know what? I agree with you. I'm not a huge mastermind concerning about art. XD
I can't fuckin believe I've never seen or heard of this game....what a fuckin gem this must've been in the late 80's.....
HELLO EVERYBODY
I think that red dude from the cover is the chest monster from Creepshow.
I owned this when it was new as a kid and absolutely love this game, despite it's many flaws.
I love how James and Mike comment on a weird looking passwords, all while ignoring the pool of blood filled with skeletons.
I got this game as a Christmas present as a kid. It was one of those games that when your friends came over, they always wanted to try it because they never heard of it. That one, and all three Adventure Island games for the NES were the most popular part of my collection.
Cool mention of the Coffin Joe Brazilian film. Have you guys watched them all?
They actually did a Monster Madness video about the whole series years ago.
Thanks. I'll have to check it out!
Jarron Dragonshade in brazil we call him too Zé do caixão, i never knew he did make good movies too.
it's great to see that james knows zé do caixão.
That theme song got stuck in my head for like 25 years. Good memories on this one
10:10 I think that's supposed to be an amplifier.
very strange looking amp
Well, when you think a fried shrimp is a chicken wing, I guess you think guitar amps are dryers.
Half of Monster Party is mastering how to hit projectiles back at enemies with the bat; you can kill enemies without getting hit, like the scorpions that hang out above you in Stage 4, and you can also kill otherwise invincible enemies, like the boulders in the same stage. It also helps to duck under bosses, and then jump after they pass over, rising behind, brandishing your bat; it hits multiple times, and once you get good at it, you're more powerful as Mark than as Bert.
in the "sorry, im dead" room, you can actually kill the buzzing fly for a bonus. takes a perfect hit with the bat that is hard to make.
I remember beating this game when I was younger, and in all due honesty, there are a lot of much harder games out there...like Out of this World, which I never got much farther than the underground lake area...
loved this game as a kid! never could quite beat it
Wondered when this game was getting played. One of my favorites on the NES
I had this when I was a kid and liked it because it was a good kid's game that I could play at four years old. Nice little nostalgia trip.
Zé do Caixão rules!!!
\m/
BTW: Zé do Caixão is the translation for Coffin Joe.
After watching part 2: "He's gonna take you back to the past!" Literally lol

Check out the Stop Skeletons from Fighting review. There's many cool things changed from the Japanese version.
The space pods when you were fighting the shrimp are a reference to The Fly.
just let the zombies dance.
if you keep going in/out of empty rooms health will spawn .
Take all of the keys on level 7
Wrong. In level 7 if you beat 2 of the bosses you get the key but if you beat a third you lose it.(confirmed) But it's level 6 that really pisses me off.
Don't listen to him! Take all of the keys on level 7.
Sure, go ahead. And have fun starting the game over from the beginning because you couldn't get out of that level.
They are all liars. Collecting all the keys on level 7 grants you immortality.
loved this game in my youth. This brings back good memories.
wow I remember playing the hell out of this game. never could beat it though.
James and Mike Mondays and Monster Madness on the same day is just fantastic
When you are battling the piranha plant in the beginning,it sounds just like battling the mouse in mario bros 2.the music and the sound efx!
OMFG now I can die in peace, James mentioned "This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse" from Coffin Joe. He's a brazilian horror legend, here we know him as "Zé do Caixão". It was awesome to see that you guys know him.
2:30 like the old trees with faces at creepy old McDonalds playgrounds which would say happy birthday to people
I used to get this and totally rad mixed up all the time. love them both
That was an AMP, obviously. The guy was playing a Guitar, cuz it's a Party. It was a Doc Brown size Amp. How could you not know it my man's?
And the manual says he has a “bad-playing guitar”, which implied that he played his guitar horribly out of tune.
Oh, How I loved this game. I logged a ton of hours replaying it when I was a kid. One of my favorites... for sure.
this games a giant fever dream
One of my all time favorites. Everyone I show it to always thinks it's funny and interesting. It's a great conversation starter type game. A great single player game to play with a friend, especially if they aren't into NES.
At 6:32 that high tone music goes soOo well with that goofy spider tip toing around with it's tiny legs, i just can't breath l0l...
I spent a great deal of time playing this as a young person.
it still impresses me how immediately on top of uploading videos they are
I liked this game back in the day. It had a lot of fun bosses and was a rare NES game with somewhat forgiving hit detection.
Top 5 fav game here, even more interesting when I found out it was supposed to be Hollywood Monsters but they of course couldn't get the rights. You could tell though with the Audrey from Little shop of horrors that it was something unique, and the changes from Japan to US are worth checking out
I wanted this episode for literal years.
Forgot about thos one wow.... 30 years later wow thanks it's a gem
The trick to this game is to find an enemy that frequently gives up hearts then farm it until you have a full health meter. I've beaten this game many times as a kid.
this was one of my favorite games growing up.
Forgot how awesome this game was! Thanks guys

I have so many memories of that game. Monster party is awesome.
The way the character moves and some of the level design reminds me of The Goonies II.
7:07 - I always have to concentrate to not say "conglaturation"...
Fav game growing up. Have the complete game with box and book
1:58
I remember one late night TCM was playing "This Night I Will Possess Your Corpse" and had no idea there was a "Coffin Joe" trilogy behind it. In my opinion it can stand on it's own as a good horror film.
I had this as a kid, man, this game was WAAAAY to hard for a little kid to play and I was born a few years before the NES even came to the states. I did get to see my friend beat it though. It took hours.
Please just do a part 2 next week!
I used to rent this game as a kid. Never could get very far, though. Your videos drive home how much I suck at NES games.
I loved this game! I use to cut class on cold days and play this all day!! I miss grammar school....
You can jump and just hold the attack button to hold out your bat to get multiple hits at a time.
One of my favorite NES games!
This game starts it's story with "What's up" lol
If you hit the projectiles back with the very tip of the bat they always go straight. The proximity controls the angle.
James sounded like William Shatner reading the intro haha.
I thought Christopher walkins
The fish looked like the reverse mermaid from Red Dwarf's "Better Than Life."
I love this game. My friends and I did a play through of it a while back.
AGVN has aged really well, he looks the same as he did in 2006
James n mike Sunday's!!
One of my all-time favorite NES games.
7:39 Mikes casual response to what James says is so fuckin funny
Seeing you guys mentioning Mr. Mojica, the Coffin Joe, is priceless. I have a friend who is a personal friend of him. Unfortunately Mr. Mojica is very sick...
i completely fergot about this game. use to play it so much as kid with my cousin's. the nostalgia
So you know about coffin Joe! Didnt know he was known outside Brazil. That was a surprise for me.
