The problem is that Doctor Who will never end, every time they kill off the daleks, the cyber men, Davros, the Timelords, or The Master; they’ll come back again because Doctor Who can’t go on without his arch rivals and the circle will continue to repeat itself

@@vullord666 Excactly. Except it already is a joke by having been destroyed the second time, no matter if it gets saved again or not. It's especially so insanely ridiculous that after it took an incomprehensible lovecraftian, cataclysmic event like the Time War to wipe them out the first time, the second time the responsible one is just one single dude who had a bad day.

It hurts even more when you listen about Davros' childhood on Skaro... In the I, Davros audio drama?
Would you believe me if I told you he had a mother, and sister once? Whom he loved very much? And he even viewed the smallest life on Skaro worthy of living? Even if it was a hermit crab?
      No, you wouldn't.
Because that's not the same Davros you see whenever he rears his ugly head.
That's what I love about this story. We see that even the most innocent of us when we are born can truly become irreedemable.
Davros in this scene knew he was beyond redemption, so he was trying to rationalize his death by having the Doctor, his oldest enemy, confirm that he was a good man.

I really wish Davros had been sincere in this episode. Actually killing Davros, and doing so in such a beautiful and poetic fashion would have made this one of the best Doctor Who stories in the history of the franchise. Without the deception, the story is a profoundly impactful reflection of the Doctor's own moral struggles, and the inescapebly long life he has lived. The Doctor has seen many deaths, but the death of one of his oldest foes, and that foe's confrontation with mortality has a depth and meaning which reflects the Doctor's own unique experience. These two understand each other, and surprisingly it would appear, shared the same ambiguities about how the dispensed the immense power that circumstance and nature provided them. Though his action's in life were at times different, the Doctor was motivated by the same principles, and faced with his death, he understands that he must also face these questions. The Doctor's desperation to help Davros is, therefore, a reflection of his own fear of not of death, but facing death with the same moral consternation as Davros, to face his mortality with the question "Am I a Good Man?" and having no answer to this paramount thought. If Davros can die at peace with himself, however, so to might the Doctor.
Davros's deception cheapens this fundementally. What should have been a genre defying episode instead quickly devolved into an action packed romp. Davros apparently could not change, and with his survival and the revival of the Daleks, the same narrative repeats itself once more. Personally I found this tremendously disappointing, not only did this rather cheap trick ruin the intense emotional impact of the episode, it also demonstrated that Doctor Who may not really be capable of evolving in its emotional depth.
Tl;dr Davros should have been telling the truth and should have died, and this really shouldn't have been an action episode.

You're anthropomorphizing Davros. Think about who he is and what his life is. For literally centuries now, his only motivation has been to live long enough to ensure total Dalek supremacy, and throughout all that time he has not hesitated to go to any length or pay any price to ensure it. As far back as Destiny of the Daleks, he openly said that it was not only the only thing keeping him alive, but that he longed for the "luxury of death" due to how much pain he was in. That was 9 regenerations ago! And since his accident, he has been in constant pain. For crying out loud, his immediate response to a threat from his own people to his Daleks resulted in him being instrumental in the mass genocide of his own people. Do you really think a person like that is likely to care if his greatest enemy if he thinks he is a good man? Or do you think a person like that has nothing less than total belief in themselves and what they are doing? A person like that simply doesn't change.

    • @BritishCommentWriter
      @BritishCommentWriter 7 років тому +30

I suppose you'd only find a dramatisation of Hitler's final days in the fuherbunker interesting if they had a scene where he phoned up Winston Churchill and Churchill agreed Hitler's heart was in the right place. And maybe then they could form a crime fighting duo or something. Wildly inconsistent characterisation isn't interesting, "challenging" or "intellectual". It's amateurish and self-indulgent, and it completely ruins any interest you have in the character. Why bother caring about what the character is doing when he can be a murderor one week and a hoppy the next? And besides, real life isn't like this. When Goebells knew the war was lost, he and his wife killed their own children and then shot themselves rather than live in a world where their ideology was dead. When Hitler knew the war was lost, his first instinct was to ensure the Germans left alive at the end wouldn't survive through the Nero decree. Do you really think such people ever ask themselves if they are wrong, or worry about what their enemies think about them? Now, somebody like the Master, sure I can see that.
Something like the Vader twist is fine because it doesn't directly contradict anything that's been previously established. That actually adds to the character. Alright, it doesn't match with what we were originally told, but even when Kenobi told Luke that Vader betrayed his father, it was obvious that Kenobi was hiding something.

Sending Davros in this way would've been amazing, especially since these two are very similar in different ways.

And that's carried throughout the series that while they are enemies and Davros certainly wants the Doctor dead, you get the feeling that he considers the Doctor an equally brilliant mind and the closest he has to a friend, even drawing parallels between them.

I feel like what would have really elevated this episode would be to make Davros sincere and have the main plot of the episode centered around the Doctor deciding whether or not to save him. It would've tied into the "Am I a good man?" Story arc from the previous season and been an interesting moral question. Have the Dalek Supreme be the one to cross the Doctor and steal the regeneration energy and thus cause the sewer revolution

    • @yehiahuzayyin7972

It still works this way, I think. Davros really is being sincere. But he uses that sincerity to better manipulate the Doctor. This is perfectly in-character for him. And the Doctor does go through the moral dilemma you mentioned. He decides to save Davros. If Davros hadn't tried to channel the regeneration energy into the Daleks, it would've extended his life to the sunrise. And he later goes back to save the child Davros. This feeds into the theme of mercy throughout the episode. Just my take.

Plus davros does love his people his entire existence has been dedicated to them, when he tells the doctor to protect his people no matter what, I think he was being fully truthful.

    The Doctor on: Davros
What does it take to create monsters? A twisted man who sees peace as a lie, seeing war as not only glorious but something that should never end? His people, he claims, he saved. I have looked at the decaying wreckage of his kind, and all I see is a travesty against life. Something imprisoned in mind and body, loathing anything outside their cage and going mad if they ever gain freedom. A blight as much upon themselves as the rest of the universe
He continues to believe it as salvation. And I saw him when he was young. No different from any other person. The world he came from is testament to the Hell that is war. A conflict lasting a millennium, its only survivors embodying maddened violence. And yet nothing like it was forged quite like that man. He, who should by all accounts abhor war, is its greatest champion in a cancer there is no true surgery to remove
I look at him face to face. The skull evident, a man who should've died millennia ago. There has always been something uncanny about him. And yet....I can't help but feel pity. I wonder if he knows, in the deepest of cores, he has gone to far. And I wonder if he keeps himself in his mental prison for so long, all because he's afraid to realize just what he's become. Is this what makes a man a monster? What keeps him as such? Is this...is this what I'm fighting?
Or am I desperate? A foolish old man who wants comfort from the Devil himself, all because we share the pain of ages, the blood of billions. I can only hope, one day, I know the truth. Even after today, I'm not sure.

This was character development; we saw his manipulative side really come out, building up to how he used what he perceived as the Doctor's weakness against him. Considering how most post-Genesis stories with Davros depict him as a generic mad scientist who likes doing crazy things for the sake of being a villain it was very refreshing and compelling. Character development isn't about making everything "emotional" for the sake of it, we know full well by now that Davros is not a redeemable character but rather an unnervingly close reflection of the Doctor, with the core difference between them being the Doctor's compassion.

Obviously the whole thing was part of a wider plot to trick the Doctor, but Davros could not have drawn that speech from nowhere, it seems like this entire scene is an aside from everything else going on in the episode. And then there's Davros. No living thing could thrive off of pure hatred, it's implausible. Every living thing has its passions, its urges, its desires. Davros makes it clear earlier on that the Daleks blood is yearning for Clara to actually run before they kill her... they murder as an art form. Davros meanwhile is a psycho, but one who has done all that he has done on the basis of his unwavering belonging and faith in his Dalek creations. His passion lies in the concept of belonging. Learning that the Doctor has found his people again, I think he was, in his own twisted way, incredibly happy for the Doctor. I think deep down, there's where he has his fears and doubts and Kaled humanity. He let it show for a moment, and for an ulterior motive, but the fact is that it's there at all. He has that depth and complexity to him. It was a surprisingly deep insight into his psyche - that I don't even think he'd be aware he'd shown the Doctor, because he's lost sight of those sorts of ideas and that way of thinking.

This scene had so much potential to redeem davros as a character as he repents in his final days as a dying man. But they ruined it by having both of them tricking each other the whole time.
It especially ruins the scene more for me because Julian bleaches performance was so fantastic in making his pain and grief feel genuine and sincere. I wish that they had ended Davros’s time on the show by having him pass away at the end exchanging one last conversation, repenting for the past mistakes as they watch one last sunrise 🌅 together.
That way the Daleks could have continued being Daleks while Davros life had come to an end. Xx

Despite the fact that Davros' eyes had previously been said to be lost after his accident, despite the fact that it's later revealed that they were playing each other the whole time... I still love this scene! Ok, granted, the playing each other thing does completely undercut the drama of this scene (as has happened so many times with Moffat), but I honestly beleive that Davros is being sincere here (no smoke without fire and all that). It makes sense to me after these two knowing each other for so long that they have this mutual respect for each other. If The Master is supposed to be his best friend who tries to kill him, Davros is his worst enemy who holds a greater respect for him than most villains.
Also, regarding his "Am I a good man?" bit, I listened to "I, Davros" before this aired, which is basically Davros' origin story and with that context, it does make sense that he'd ask that question, baring in mind that everything he did was to protect his own race from destruction. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in Big Finish!

I agree. Despite the trick at the end, I do believe that what Davros says here is genuine. In another Big Finish (think it was 'Davros'), Davros says that the Doctor is the closest thing he has to a friend, because he is the only other person that Davros can relate to and understand. They may be enemies at the end of the day, but their relationship is certainly a complex one.

+Russell Tietjen Exactly! While I don't like the Whole "ah! I knew you were tricking me, Davros!" from the doctor, I don't mind the "redemption" path embraced by Davros. As you said, no smoke without fire. Perhaps one of the greatest aspects of an arch-nemesis like him, is to become sincere when it's needed. The doctor could have still been aware that if Davros ever tried to trick him, the blob daleks would have destroyed his empire, so he could have thought that Davros would have never been that stupid. As the doctor said to davros "Oh, one thing: moron!". Because Davros lacks of feelings for the weak but this turned against him since he didn't think of the consequences of enfusing the blob daleks with regeneration energy... so yeah the only thing that I dislike is that the Doctor was tricking Davros into thinking that he was tricking him, while he could have thought: "if davros uses my energy for his daleks he's going to doom his empire. He can't be such a moron"

He tries to give his companions a normal life, tries to befriend his greatest enemies, and when he was finally about to die he didn't want to regenerate. He wants to end his story once and for all, be with his wife, his granddaughter. He's lived over 3.5 billion years (or 2000 is you don't count Hell Bent), he just wants to finally end his story.
