+Mr Jones So sick of people thinking Ten is a wimp because he didn't want to die. Try putting yourself in his shoes in that position. Also, why reply to a comment praising great acting/characters with a negative statement? What's the point?
You mean it's wimpy that he was upset at losing someone he was in love with, losing his entire species and planet, and then finding out he's going to die? Men are judged enough for showing their emotions without your dated, ugly views in the picture. The Tenth Doctor actually had a capacity for emotions, something you clearly lack. And with that last statement you lost my interest in even having a civilised conversation with you, not that I think that's possible anyway. Goodbye.
I am guessing Eight is a wimp too considering he felt burdened with losing Lucie Miller. I'm guessing Eleven in a wimp because he retired after losing Amy and Rory. Fact is, the Doctor values his companions. He loves them so much and he's not going to shrug off a companion's demise like it's nothing, especially if they are close, like Ten and Rose were. And he wasn't crying about regeneration, he was upset with the fact he was nearing what he and Eleven believed the total end to the Doctor on Trenzalore. That's why Ten said "I don't want to go" on Day of the Doctor.
Mayo Tango131 Don't give me this "real Doctors" bollocks. They're all the Doctor, they're all unique. This is quite possibly the darkest moment in the entire series, old and new. You can kill people, you can torture people, you can destroy entire star systems but no amount of destruction will ever be as horrific as seeing someone so close to you having their humanity stripped from them and becoming a cold, emotionless machine. This represents the sheer horror of the cybermen and why they are quite possibly the most disturbing enemy in doctor who. The prospect of having your emotions removed and turned into something completely different seems more scary to me than death itself.
This is also why I really like their origin episode in New Who. The cybermen were a result of humanity chasing technology to such a degree that they were no longer human. The cyber men were simply a result of one man trying to live forever, and losing his humanity in the process.

It's not just you. The average Cybermen are a fully metallic shell that you could be forgiven for mistaking for generic robots. Kunaal Gupta exactly. Being honest I found the episode slow because of it being ruined there wasn't the major shock to come at the end. Now if it hadn't been ruined then it would've paid off massively.
So I haven't watched Doctor who in years. But this clip came up, and I got to say, for some reason the Mondasian Cyberman seems a lot more unsettling than the other modern series cybermen.
This episode is the best cybermen story in the modern series, hands down. This clip alone does not do it justice, its genuinely disturbing, Moffat's on absolute top form with it.
Hands down the best thing about this episode was just how creepy it was. Bill walking into the room with the patients, still human underneath, and then the fact that she becomes one herself was brilliant. There was no way to reverse it, that was her fate. I don't think I'd been this creeped out by an episode since "The Waters of Mars", and I was only 13 then, 20 watching this episode. Moffat and Capaldi definitely went out on a high note.
it's very mediocre compared to Who running between series 1-4. It's lost it's edge and tried to be what it used to be (when it failed and had to be axed) since then... Sad but true. Scenes like this don't really give me any sort of goosebumps because it's a little too obvious it is coming because the rest of the story line is so slow and mundane... Granted at times there's a little ingenuity in there but it is few and far between. That's why I feel Moffat is a much better one off writer than Russel T. Davies (RTD). RTD was much better at casually slipping in little easter eggs into 100MPH episodes so that you wouldn't always pick up on them! One such example was the Harold Saxon series 3 ending episodes. Hence why the plot twists were not as predictable and actually gave you goosebumps come towards the end of a series... Just my opinion but ah well I suppose you can't please everyone!
Wouldn't make any sense since the drums were only in his head because of Rassilon and Rassilon at this point was dead with that flan foiled, sio the drums would have stopped.
2:25 Master of disguise! I knew John Simm was returning but I was completely fooled right up to that point. So I still got a little bit of the surprise!
"Do you still like disguises? Of course, they are rather necessary when you happen to be... someone's... former Prime Minister..." *"HARRIET JONES, FORMER PRIME MINISTER"*
He did pretty well here I think, the lower overall stakes of this finale helped I'd say - no big intergalactic scale conflicts, just the Doctor fighting to save a small group of children. Beautifully told and executed.
I love this cliffhanger. Two Masters, Bill is a Cybermen, and the Doctor realizes just what he did. It's the perfect way to go into Capaldi's last few episodes.
Man, the Mondasian Cybermen are scarier than their more silver-plated counterparts. Something about those medical masks and those gloves that just...*shudders* If they're going for scarier Cyberman, the Mondasian ones win.
The show hitting an absolute dizzying high here: The gut-wrenching horror of the Cyberman's reveal, followed by the macabre humour of the two Masters. We are literally appalled at what has happened to poor Bill, and then seconds later we're LOLing at "Give us a kiss". And not even feeling bad about the mood swing.
Steven's writing is so damn good OMG he just squeezes every last second peeling back every layer of the full situation with heavy emotional realisations on top I just get so gobsmacked
This was one of the best closing moments to Doctor Who in my opinion. Even knowing the Master would return, it was done in spectacular fashion. And CyberBill broke my heart... _I waited for you_ (And even though I thought it would be so crazy and interesting to have a companion turn into a Cyberman, *THIS* is why you shouldn't say things you'll regret people)
Liam Catterson I didnt think it was as spectacular as it could have been at all. The whole episode certainly could have been riveting. As usual with recent Doctor Who and Sherlock series, it’s been ‘tell, not show’. Characters standing talking in a room with very average dialogue (“Id call it a genesis.. the genesis of the cybermen” obviously trying too hard to make fans go crazy), master reveal is the same as all the other Master reveals, and loads of music slapped on later to make it feel more exciting than what’s actually playing out. The drama of the scene is rushed
Only Moffat could have dreamt something like that up....his successor has big shoes to fill. His 4 episodes were by far the best episodes of this season.
Spencer C The Master, Davros and Boba Fett are all in the very small group of men who know not the meaning of the word 'dead'. Seeing as how there's big trouble brewing whenever the Doctor meets himself, I shudder to think what it means when the same happens to the Master.
This combined with the reveal of the Mondasian Cyberman and the fact it was Bill would have been the most shocking moment in years if it was kept secret, probably of the entire modern series. The problem is they did manage to keep it a secret for the most part but clearly didn’t have the confidence for the series beforehand so put Simm in the series 10 trailer, and then publicly announced his return! Complete marketing balls up, hopefully under Chibnall this sort of thing doesn’t happen again.
Eleanor Emerson Leaked by the mirror and the sun because they put it in the trailer at the press screening, asking people to “look away when the spoiler arrives on screen”. They managed to avoid anyone knowing for months beforehand and then they put it in a trailer- as if the people who work in tabloid news are simply going to look away. Then to officially announce it is even worse. It’s peoples choice if they want to believe a tabloid like the mirror but if you officially confirm it then it’s completely ruined.
numpteez he wasn’t though, his character was photographed on set but no one actually clicked it was John Simm until after the confirmation of his return. It made sense marketing-wise, they wanted to bring back some viewers, but then they compromised on this big reveal which the episode built up to! So it was redundant, and a real shame.
I don't follow any of the tabloids or alternate sources other than the official Doctor Who pages so I would have been unspoilt if they didn't announce it.
2:04 It took me a few listens, but listen to how the music builds here. It’s a slightly different rhythm and tune, but the instruments are the same. It’s “The Sound of Drums”, Simm’s theme from the Tennant era.
I had no idea of the spoiled reveal of Simm’s Master returning, this was such a well executed surprise for me. The split second you realise it’s him when he goes back to his regular voice before taking off the he mask made the hair on my neck stand right on up.
I used to think that the cliffhanger at the end of The Army of Ghosts couldn’t be topped, but this haunting and poignant one just utterly usurped it in every respect - an epic reveal of John Simm’s Master combined with the unabashed horror of what the Mondasian Cybermen are.
In my opinion this will always be the most chilling moment in all of NuWho. Even though I knew about both the Master's return and the Mondasian Cybermen (and also suspected that the Cyberman was Bill), this will forever send chills down my spine more than any other moment. The only one I can think of that can compete is the climax of Midnight.
@@jonathancampbell5231 Come on though....Doctor falls took the cybermen seriously, and they never got 'stopped'. its still better than s8 finale or closing time though.
folks overlook them, but the ones who made this episode work are the makeup artists who made it possible to hide who was really under the mask of Razor: beautifully hidden in plain sight but enough of John Simm visible to make you go “how did i miss that!”
I’m glad I was lucky enough to watch this episode nearly 10 years after I first finished watching the show, to show up without watching any of the next episode credits to see this masterpiece of a twist blind
that's something I don't understand about people: nobody wants spoilers about a tv series but everytime they find a spoiler, they leak it immediately through internet or through a magazine... and then they complain, saying that what happen on the show would have been better if it was not leaked... Anyway, a couple of magazine leaked John Simm's return, using some photos of him, capaldi and gomez on the set while filming. Since the news was already leaked, bbc made it official with the trailer... people must blame those magazine, not bbc.
If only they didn't put him in the trailer. No one managed to figure out he was in it and we managed to avoid all spoilers regarding Simm's return. There weren't any leaks at all. What a shame, as that could've been one of the greatest shock and awe moments of ALL TIME. Ugh. Simm was still great though.
I've never watched the trailer, but when I was there (in the series), I had watched only the seasons 5678 and 9, I didn't knew the master......... Thanks netflix
I remember when I first saw this episode. The cliffhanger was amazing. The big reveal of the two masters and that chilling "I waited for you" and the one tear running down her face. WOW.
This episode grows on me more and more every time I watch it. The music and the suspense throughout is incredible, and has now officially made this episode one of my favourites of 12's era
I loved how dark this story was. The Mondasian Cybermen freaked me out especially when they were walking into the conversion theatre. The soundtrack is also one of my favorites in the whole show. Had a horror theme and made the episode terrifying at some points. Spine tingling stuff. And of course, the two Master's. The concept was perfectly executed and the chemistry between John Simm and Michelle Gomez was outstanding. I honestly hope we get more stories like this in series 11. Probably unlikely though because these type of stories might suit an older, more classic who Doctor like Peter Capaldi. I'm very keen to see Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor. She has been great in other shows like Broadchurch and I'm confident she'll be "oh brilliant" 😀.
I rate this finale as one of the best. It hit all the right points- THe story, drama and acting were all superb. I didnt even mind the Liquid Pilot deus ex machina that much.
This story is an absolute masterpiece. My favourite Capaldi Story, from series 10, one of the best series ever in my opinion and possibly the creepiest the cybermen have been
Sweet Jesus, the Mondasian cybermen. Their voice, their faces make them by far and away the best version we've seen of them in NewWho. Bring them back please! May be the first time I've genuinely been scared of a cyberman...
I grew up watching Dr Who in the 80s. My first episode ever had the Doctor taking the Master's sealed ashes to be eternally locked away. He's been the greatest villain to me ever since. The idea that he's facing 2 incarnations while discovering such tragic heartbreak is amazing. Anyone else remember when all you need to defeat a Cyberman was a bag of gold dust to clog the vent at the base of it's neck?
His explanation is pretty sound. For the top of the ship time is a matter of minutes. In the same time the further down the ship you go, years can pass. He saw the Tardis appear, would've known at least one of the people stepping out of it would be human, and doesn't want to chance that they know who Harold Saxon is, and would recognise him immediately.
@@alexrowdyrodrigues9716 It's either one between Simms and Missy or he pre-dates Jacoby and the Time War. It's very possible we've been meeting them out of order similar to River Song.
The old Mondasian Cyberman costume is cheap and flimsy, and yet is absolutely terrifying. It hits that uncanny valley in the perfect way that the modern Cyberman (or hell even the later iterations of Cybermen in classic who) just seem to miss. The design, the movements, and the voice are so WRONG and yet so perfect.
This was my first real story with the Cybermen. I loved Eccleston but then didn't watch Tennant's era. I only really rejoined half way through Matt Smith's... And the cybermen just seemed like (sorry to say) silly robot people. But these two episodes were horrifying- in precisely the way classic who was described. Those pre-cursors to the cybermen tapping "pain" in particular really got to me, as well as the woman turning their volume down. In a way I've not wanted to watch these episodes again, as they're really upsetting. But upsetting in precisely the way that makes this and the next episode so much more powerful a "last stand" than Smith's (sadly) pathetic free extra lives and laser beam cheat. It also encapsulates why The Doctor keeps coming back to this planet called Earth in the metaphor of protecting the Mondasians and their homes. And the timely wimey stuff- of the bottom decks moving so much faster than the top- really makes you ponder whether any kind of uprising is futile... It really makes you think about your own mortality.
Mondasian Cybermen nailed the "uncanny valley". Other versions of the Cybermen are too close to robots. These ones are almost human, just... slightly off. It's much more unsettling. And the way they just open their mouths and words come out, sounding like distorted human voices but with the intonation on all the wrong words... Perfection.
Sadly unlikely under Chibnall. Besides even if he did bring them back, he doesn't have the writing skills to make them anywhere near as scary as in this episode.
Three of my top five favourite villains together, and ALL of them former/current companions of The Doctor. It's why this episode/Series/Doctor/Show is SO amazing. love, Love, LOVE it!
I actually didn't had it spoiled for me. This was one of my favorite episodes, confused with what is happening, and slowly realizing that they're building cybermen, and that Bill turned into one. Great twist.
On one hand, they really did Bill dirty. On the other hand, they did the Mondasian Cybermen REALLY well. I couldn't take them seriously in The Tenth Planet, they looked and sounded too ridiculous. Which makes it impressive that they managed to make them more terrifying without actually changing that much about them (although it's probably just because they had production than they did in 1966)
This “Saxon” is much saner then the one 10 encountered, and that makes him more dangerous , plus, he has a goatee, so you know he is more evil
Definitely not saner. Just more calculating and Ruthless with his decisions
I love the goatee! A nice callback to Rodger Delgado and Anthony Ainley.
I have a goatee, and I can confirm it does increase our evil level significantly. Each centimeter per whisker adds a percent.
Probably cos by this point the drumming has stopped

Well, she knew how brutal she was when she was younger, after all.

Uh... Missy is a chick, so it would be when she was younger.
2:30 Harriet Jones, former prime minister!

You can also hear an electronic rendition of it when the master reveals himself to himself (missy)
That scene still gives me goosebumps!
Ahah! Agree!
it's very mediocre compared to Who running between series 1-4.
Yeah

Same here. I spent the entire episode watching him and waiting for The Master to show up. :D
I never watched the ads prior to this so I was very shocked he returned. Shocked I tells you.
Same the reveal was still amazing
Still the best ending to any New Who episode to date. Moffat was the King of the cliffhanger.
I know I'm commenting but it's perfect. The death of a companion. 2 Masters. Cybermben and the Doctor desperate and lost! So good!
He was indeed awesome at setting them up. He didn't always deliver when it came to resolving them 😅
He did pretty well here I think, the lower overall stakes of this finale helped I'd say - no big intergalactic scale conflicts, just the Doctor fighting to save a small group of children. Beautifully told and executed.
I love this cliffhanger. Two Masters, Bill is a Cybermen, and the Doctor realizes just what he did. It's the perfect way to go into Capaldi's last few episodes.
These two had unbelievable on screen chemistry together!
nice comment
True
What two? There's only one.
Man, the Mondasian Cybermen are scarier than their more silver-plated counterparts. Something about those medical masks and those gloves that just...*shudders*
If they're going for scarier Cyberman, the Mondasian ones win.
And the bandages, that always makes me queasy 😳
The show hitting an absolute dizzying high here:
The gut-wrenching horror of the Cyberman's reveal, followed by the macabre humour of the two Masters. We are literally appalled at what has happened to poor Bill, and then seconds later we're LOLing at "Give us a kiss".
And not even feeling bad about the mood swing.
I absolutely love the attention to detail with the music because of John Simm's return you can hear the 1234 at the end
_I waited for you_
(And even though I thought it would be so crazy and interesting to have a companion turn into a Cyberman, *THIS* is why you shouldn't say things you'll regret people)
The time dilation within the floors of a giant colony ship was one of the most fantastic sci-fi concepts they've implemented in ages!
Agree, the best closing moment after the finale of Utopia for me
Liam Catterson I didnt think it was as spectacular as it could have been at all.
I was so sucked into this episode, I'd actually forgotten that John Simm was supposed to appear at some point. This ending totally floored me
I will never get over the way the Master mockingly says “Doctor!”
Love how John Simm came back, if that never got spoiled it would of been one of the biggest reveals in Doctor who history
The best reveal ever! Love the two Masters together!
Spencer C
The Master, Davros and Boba Fett are all in the very small group of men who know not the meaning of the word 'dead'.
Seeing as how there's big trouble brewing whenever the Doctor meets himself, I shudder to think what it means when the same happens to the Master.
"You met the ex."
Any youngsters here recognize the Cloister Bell?
The Sarcastic Ravenclaw so are you being sarcastic....
I was stunned. The Master created them.
They only announced it because it was leaked before, actually.
It’s peoples choice if they want to believe a tabloid like the mirror but if you officially confirm it then it’s completely ruined.
i didnt know when i watched the episode and now im not really gonna check dr who twitter
numpteez he wasn’t though, his character was photographed on set but no one actually clicked it was John Simm until after the confirmation of his return.
No matter what people say, this was one of the best episodes.
With one of the best Doctors.
Ruined only by the episode after it

folks overlook them, but the ones who made this episode work are the makeup artists who made it possible to hide who was really under the mask of Razor: beautifully hidden in plain sight but enough of John Simm visible to make you go “how did i miss that!”
I’m glad I was lucky enough to watch this episode nearly 10 years after I first finished watching the show, to show up without watching any of the next episode credits to see this masterpiece of a twist blind

To be honest it was kinda ruined when we saw him in the Season 10 teaser at the end of The Pilot.
Josh Hill, he was announced even before then.
Yeah, I remember seeing a post about it on Twitter.
that's something I don't understand about people: nobody wants spoilers about a tv series but everytime they find a spoiler, they leak it immediately through internet or through a magazine... and then they complain, saying that what happen on the show would have been better if it was not leaked...
The Gallifreyan Whovian but there was a leak. The Sun had the exclusive but before they published it, the BBC decided to include him in the trailers.

This episode grows on me more and more every time I watch it. The music and the suspense throughout is incredible, and has now officially made this episode one of my favourites of 12's era
2:57 The way he says “Bill?” is heartbreaking 💔
Wait, when Bill cried, the Cyberman cried too...is this why the new fully metal cybermen have a teardrop-like groove around their left eye?

i desperately wished capaldi did another season with bill and nardole. 10 is the best season hands down. and hes the best doctor
The acting on Peter’s face just made this scene 10/10
The way John Simm's Master is reintroduced was such a brilliant throwback to Anthony Ainley Master's numerous disguises in late Classic Who.
I knew The Master was coming back, but I was fooled by his hobo disguise
"you'll never be so self destructive"
And, One episode later, they kill each other.
World Enough and Time / The Doctor Falls was a perfect story!!
2:20 this moment would have been so much better if it wasn't spoiled in the trailers
I actually loved the last 2 episodes of this series. Really did creep me out. The cyber men are still one of the best villains but the older version.
THE FOUR KNOCKS IN THE MUSIC THEME
*former prime minister on EARTH*
*wears a disguise so he's not recognised... on a MONDASIAN ship*
Master: like I needed an excuse
They explain the next episode he also became a politician there after his TARDIS crashed.
He took over the Mondas ship too, till they overthrew him and forced
Him into hiding.
He was hiding his identity from Bill. Who would immediately have recognised Harold Saxon. Probably.
His explanation is pretty sound. For the top of the ship time is a matter of minutes. In the same time the further down the ship you go, years can pass. He saw the Tardis appear, would've known at least one of the people stepping out of it would be human, and doesn't want to chance that they know who Harold Saxon is, and would recognise him immediately.
hes Bill's former prime minister

theres something just so aesthetically pleasing about the shot at 0:56 idk why
My all-time favourite scene in Doctor Who history...
This would of been such a great plot twist if John sinn was not accounced his return
TimeForTeletubbies it really would be, when I see Americans react to it (who haven’t watched the trailers) they go mad
Johnny Sins is a different kind of actor)
Mondasian Cybermen nailed the "uncanny valley". Other versions of the Cybermen are too close to robots. These ones are almost human, just... slightly off. It's much more unsettling. And the way they just open their mouths and words come out, sounding like distorted human voices but with the intonation on all the wrong words...
Perfection.

Sadly unlikely under Chibnall. Besides even if he did bring them back, he doesn't have the writing skills to make them anywhere near as scary as in this episode.

I actually didn't had it spoiled for me. This was one of my favorite episodes, confused with what is happening, and slowly realizing that they're building cybermen, and that Bill turned into one. Great twist.
Lucky you!
On one hand, they really did Bill dirty. On the other hand, they did the Mondasian Cybermen REALLY well.
I couldn't take them seriously in The Tenth Planet, they looked and sounded too ridiculous. Which makes it impressive that they managed to make them more terrifying without actually changing that much about them (although it's probably just because they had production than they did in 1966)
I love the voice of the cyberman, it's like its computer processing every sentence
Best doctor who scene of all time
