  • I threw together this video showing Doctor Who’s ongoing theme of the Doctor and his worst enemies being more similar than he may like. It is also a medium for the show’s ongoing theme that nobody is one-dimensional, and everybody has a “good” and an “evil” side.

    “A nameless terrible thing soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies, the most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it or hold it or reason with it, one day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world” this hits different when you realize it’s about the doctor and it’s all kind of true

      Technically it's not that hard to reason with him. Just tell him, "okay, we won't do the horrible thing you don't want us to do." Pretty much all of his victims were being killed while attempting murder, genocide, or something similar.

      @@Archone666 I beg to differ. I think the point of saying you can't reason with the Doctor, is that generally his mind is already made up. You're bad you're bad. The Doctor can't see the beauty in the Daleks. He can't understand the Dalek's intention. I believe that is the point of that particular the line. Of course cybermen and daleks wouldn't be able to reason with something that is unreasonable at least to them.

    • @Archone666
      @Archone666 4 роки тому +168

      @@calibribody6776 On the contrary, he's always giving them warnings. Hell, he even sighed miserably as David Tennant's Doctor when he admitted, "I'm so old... I used to be more generous. ONE chance. That was it." In fact, he's always giving them a chance to walk away before they get genocided.
      Also, the Dalek's intention is to exterminate all non-Dalek life... at which point they'll die too, because they're so inferior without their salt-shaker mecha that they keep having to recruit the Doctor to save them. So... no, there's no "beauty" in the Daleks. They were created by an insane lunatic and the only virtues they have keep getting smothered by their own fanatical ideology.

      9's face when the broken Dalek said "You would make a good Dalek" is my favourite moment of the Doctor talking to a Dalek. Christopher Eccleston's face as that moment is just amazing. He also had the most in common with that Dalek, both of them believing to be the Last. Both of them broken (the Dalek Physically, the Doctor Mentally).
      But for me, David Tennant is and always will be the best Doctor. I think it's likely due to the fact that he was my first Doctor. Your first Doctor is always special.

    "A good Dalek" has a double meaning. They can be saying, like to the 9th Doctor, "you would be skilled at being what a Dalek is" ie hateful, destructive, objectively evil, but it could also mean "you are a Dalek that is good" as in, you are everything the Daleks are, but for non-evil reasons. Like the old saying: the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

      to be a dalek is to be pure evil, being a particularly good dalek means you're better at doing what dalek's do.
      like with the doctor, he's able to rid all the dalek's from taking over the universe.
      but sure, he isn't an evil being. so of course the doctor being a good dalek, would mean he's dalek like, towards a positive universe.

      I actually didn't have much of an issue with the Dalek's constantly appearing in the first 4 seasons. As at least their appearances maintained continuity story wise.
      1st season - One Dalek falls out of the time war, ends up killing itself, Dalek Emperor's ship falls out of the Time War and he builds a new race of Daleks from humans.
      2nd season - Cult of Skaro introduced, Daleks are kept inside the Genesis Ark.
      3rd season - Cult of Skaro returns and attempts to evolve using humans fail, all the Dalek's are killed with the exception of Dalek Caan
      4th season - Dalek Caan's temporal shift took him into the Time War where he was able to save Davros's ship from being destroyed and he builds a whole new ton of Daleks.
      Granted, they probably should have spaced these stories out a bit more, but it was under Moffat where the Dalek stories lost any sense of continuity IMO.

    The Doctor was already known as "Ka Faraq Gatri" (Destroyer of Worlds), most notably as the 7th Doctor, who destroyed Skaro (with Davros literally begging for pity). However, the name goes as far back as the 2nd Doctor, so Davros is basically just saying "You are still the destroyer of worlds, Doc - but let me clarify for our new era of fans that you, sir, are one bitter-ass Time Lord."

The other Daleks are surprised when the 'Good Dalek' starts shooting them, they'd never considered betrayal possible.
      But the difference is, the Doctor feels bad about it. He's an extremely broken man. He remembers everyone who he's ever killed or who died for him. The Dalek's don't care, they kill and move on. The Doctor remembers.

    • @ItsAv3rageGamer
      @ItsAv3rageGamer 6 років тому +267

      Well, from the Doctor's point of view, Skaro was wiped out and the Emperor's ship had simply got lucky and slipped out of the Time War. The Doctor believed that using the moment had wiped out the Daleks entirely. Worth noting too that these Daleks were made using human beings and were not therefore 'pure daleks'.

      Also the impact of that moment was deadened somewhat by how often the Daleks returned. It was good when it aired but given they came back about once a year then at some point stopped being an nearly extinct species and started having Asylums and death camps and wars of extermination across the universe (all with no explanation for how they recovered I might add) really smashed the intensity of that moment. The same way bringing back Gallifrey in the 50th undercut the emotional through line of the first five or six seasons of the show.

  • @dreambug8831

    I kinda felt a bit disappointed when we found out he didn't actually destroy Gallifrey. Knowing the Doctor actually blew everyone including his own planet up really added depth to his character. @Solitaire001 6 років тому +60

      I agree. I've been of the opinion that when The Doctor regenerates, aspects of his personality are shuffled. Everything is there, but the prominence of difference aspects changes. An example of this is with The Fifth Doctor and The Sixth Doctor who almost seem to be opposites. Yet each has personality aspects that we'd seen before in the preceding regenerations.

    • @keyking2
      @keyking2 6 років тому +41

      Yeah, but even beside that on a individual level, each person has aspects of their themselves that are darker/negative/evil/base whatever you want to call it. It annoys me when people say stuff like "showing his true colours", "their true nature", etc. It's like it's implying that all the kindness compassion the Doctor (or any character/person it's applied to) has is just a veneer to hide some kind of more brutal or savage personality. People can be both and most of society doesn't seem to understand that; in their eyes someone is just "bad" or "good".

    • @hehehe88
      @hehehe88 6 років тому +10

      thats true, though i believe the implication is that its something that is nearly unshakable for The Doctor; the ability to make grandiose decisions that results in an entire species agony, death, or defeat. Sometimes they are unforeseen or for the greater good, sometimes everyone gets what they want, besides the folks that don't yield, but those decisions are still made. You can't undo the big decisions, and the doctor has made many, and some of those decisions are very memorable and exploitable, especially to something as sinister as some daleks.

    I know I know the whole “you would be a good dalek” is really creepy, but can we truly appreciate so many main enemies of the doctor banding to together just to defeat him, they know how much power he has, and them believing he would destroy the universe finally pushed them over the edge. So many races known for never working together, always aggressive, all coming together out of a collective fear of him. Thats scary.

    3:07 I love how in this moment, the Doctor lets the mask fall away, doesn't pretend to know it all, doesn't pretend to have control of the situation, doesn't try to put on a brave face as always. He asks Jack what he would do, and in that moment he's genuinely lost. His doubt and conflict over whether it is right to kill the human race to save them from an even worse fate under the Daleks... and whether he was right to do it to the Time Lords either.

      Well the truth be told that Dalek killed himself because he hated himself for being what he would see as a 'dirty half breed' (this does not impley any racism on my part) Daleks are soooo racist that they hate even the very thought of not being a 'pure Dalek' even if said Dalek was he himself wasn't 'pure' thus he'd rather die, not only as his duty but also with glee.
      The comment that Davros makes about the Doctor using his compainions to do his 'dirty' work, is true all the way though the entire series, I would really like to have seen some clips from the classic series during the flashbacks (eg Adric's last farewell to the Doctor in 'Earthshock' would have been perfect, sadly the BBC don't have the clip of Sara Kingdom's death, but Katerina's death would have worked, along with a lot of other clips, but I think that the shows running time, and also the fact that many members of the target audence would have been unaware of the Classic Series, and thus would have been confused to see lots of people dying that they would have not 'seen before'.) However I don't see that as the Doctor doing this out of his ego, rather that he may feel that his compainians are more capluble of using guns and other weapons, or that he wants them to be able to fight for themselves, there is also the fact the he actully has taken life, not only in the Time War, but also on a great number of occasions where he would think up something, and then invent a device to kill his foe.
      In short it's not really all that differnent than me, making from scrach my very own gun, from odds and ends that I have to hand in my house and using it on a burgler, with fatal results rather than just going out and buying one for the exact some use.
      The idea that the Doctor isn't all that different from the Dalek's is in fact a common troupe in much heroic fiction, as many superheroes best foes are those which are mirror images of the hero. In the Doctor's case he differs from the Daleks due to the fact that he does not want to rule the universe, whereas the Daleks do, he is the same as the Daleks because he wants to wipe them all out, totally and forever, in order to stop them from doing evil, as it is the only way to stop them, because the truth be told, there is no such thing as a good Dalek.
      (A side note though is the comic strip story 'Children of the Revolition' where he meets a tribe of peace loving Daleks of whom he had a hand in starting them up in the TV story 'The Evil of the Daleks', which in my view also meant that the Doctor inadvertaly created the Cult of Skaro, who reject the 'ideals' of their race, and as it turns out it is the human's who are the real villians of the story, who only see the error of their ways after the tribe sacrice themselves to save the human's from an alien squid, thus they are now no longer any more 'good Dalek's' left, although that said there is a single Dalek working for the human's in the episode 'Into the Dalek' but I personally don't think that it is a 'good' Dalek as the only thing that changed about him was his loyaltes, just because he fights other members of his race of the behalf of a race who is at war with the Daleks doesn't make him a hero)
      The Doctor, as much of hero he may otherwise be, is someone who also could be seen as a villian in other contexts as well, after all he/she is someone who has rarely ever 'lost' to the bad guys, and by many he is seen as some kind of godlike being (using the TARDIS to travel though time and space helps give off this kind of message) who for all they know can do anything he wants to them, thus putting a truly holy terror into his foes.
      The Doctor is after all someone who has, what we would consider, very high, and often unrealistic values (at least to modern day viewers) which he seeks to impose onto the Universe, the only thing stopping him from taking away all evil and suffering from the history of the Universe is the fixed points in time, and also the fact that he doesn't want to become a ruler, of which he'd have to become one with 100% total power over every living thing in order to acchive such a goal.
      However this doesn't stop him from commiting acts of mass murder towards whole fleets of alien space ships if they don't turn back home on his say so, nor does this stop him from distroying meat eating alien plants just because they happened to be on Earth and were eating humans, in order to live.
      Often he has a habit of tricking his foes into killing themselves, this in fact is something which dates back to the very first story (whatever it is called at the moment) where although he himself did not directly kill the villian, he did trick a caveman (by the name of Kal) into admiting that he had murdered an older member of his tribe (yes there was also a scene in the same story where he was willing to commit murder himself, but that was more of a means to and end, in this case to escape from the Stone Age) he has since done this many, many times.
      Post Time War, the Doctor is somewhat more of an anti hero (by the standerds of more old fashoned fans, like myself anyways) who, in his 10th Incarntion would offer his foes one chance to stop whatever they were doing or be killed. In 'The Christmas Invasion' we see him do this, to his credit when the human's blow up the retreating Spacecraft (I can't spell the name of the alien race of which it belonged to) he strongly disapproves and sends the UK out of our 'Golden Age' (even though he once said that there never was one nor would there ever be one) into, what I think anyway the recession (thanks Doc)
      However to be fair on him, the Doctor is someone who seems to see things in the 'big pictire' this, to his credit, is something that he realises which is why he chooses to suround himself with human companians as they are able to keep him grounded, this isn't just a Moffet idea, this is in fact a vital point that goes back to the start of the saga where it was Ian and Barbara (truth be told it was mostly Barbara) who, we must assume, were his first human companians, (Susan was his 'own grandchild' so was thus, at the very least, Gallifeyian) before then he had been in the TARDIS all alone, with only Susan for company, where all of his travels were simply to study the whole of time and space, rather than to get stuck in or have a good time, meet famous people from history and (when the Web of Time allows) right wrongs and help people.
      All in all I think that, overall, that the Doctor is a hero as not only does he do good deeds, but also that he sees his own moral shortcomings (even though he does not outwardly admit it) and so has psent his enitre life dreaming up 'failsafes' to control his own actions, granted this may not always work, but you get the geist...
      I know that the above may have gone into a lot of detail, so thank you for reading the above.

      Aima Sinak
      I think the dalek, after seeing into the doctors mind, believed that doing this was the best way to hurt him. Not because he thought his hatred was beautiful. Showing him the fury in him, which he already disliked, brought out hatred for them exponentially.
      A psychological war the doctor keeps falling for. The dalek is sacrificing his own kind, just to hurt the doctor. This is symbolically reminding him, that he chose to destroy the daleks. The Doctor believes he killed the timelords. The false equivalency of suggesting killing each dalek without mercy as being the same is a factitious move designed to upset the doctor, and may impair his will to kill daleks. It doesn't fool the doctor, but it makes him shut down emotionally to cope. Such is the price of patience.
      Honestly, that Dalek played a perfect move. In terms of game theory, I am very impressed. I could go on, but they both know the game, and that layer is where the doctor loses. He can't cope. Either way, it's the annoying little brother tactics.
      Since daleks and timelords can predict time with memory. It is not to see time, and plan multi dimensionally, it's like having a map to a building, it doesn't tell you where you are.. So this game would be verbal to delay time-sensitive information.
      Probability is what seeing time is like, so the doctor keeps track of what timeline is most likely to appear as if he instantaneously reacted.. This is what makes timelords as they are. Intellectual prowess improves their ability to grasp time, which is why "the doctor of war" is his name on Gallifrey..
      Four heartbeats is for time dilation, and they probably can endure much more than others with their regenerating energy probably stuffed into extra stem cells at.. Birthing pod? Despite being essentially humans still, timelords just predict time with 2 hearts like a magnified lens.. maybe that will explain general relativity for someone.

    I know the Daleks are the Doctor’s greatest rivals, but if they keep coming back through Ex Machina explanations, it cheapens previous losses the Doctor and his companions have suffered. “I destroyed all the Daleks at the end of the Last Time War. But then I found one hiding in a bunker and destroyed it, then I discovered the Dalek Emperor survived and destroyed him and his followers, but then I discovered an secret society of Daleks and destroyed 4 of the 5, then the 5th Dalek went back in time and brought a massive chunk of the Dalek Army back until I destroyed them.” See what I mean, the sacrifice is cheapened when an enemy can keep returning after a short pause.

      Well, being a long-lived, powerful TL who can exterminate worlds and species (or save them, at least for a while) -- but who can't do the one thing that a true God could do, which is to halt Entropy -- IS tragic. Looked at from that perspective, all of Who is a tragedy about small victories that can never be secured against Time/Entropy (he can save Clara, but she's still going to meet the Raven anyway, just as all the people he saves will, despite his best efforts, eventually die) -- it's all about loss; he loses his companions, he loses his home-world, he loses everybody in the end. Just like all of us; it's the thread of loss, interwoven with threads of temporary victories and delights, that make the Doctor ring true to us, because he is us, in this respect. I can't forget 12 pointing out a patch of space to Clara (in the Mummy one) and telling her about the vanished beauties that he saw there eons earlier, before things changed; as they do; always; of course. No matter how "powerful" you are.

    The only trouble I have with the daleks in general is the sole fact that they only have one setting. Surely it makes sense that they should evolve, even if it is just a little bit. Personally speaking, it makes some what interesting if the daleks had the ability to feel emotion or something. One wouldn't be able to tell what they would likely do in any situation, that would make them a little more frightening. Wouldn't it?

    • @astralwyrm3787
      @astralwyrm3787 6 років тому +27

      If they had a breadth of emotions then they wouldn't be Daleks anymore. Really all the Daleks need to be more frightening is for the writers to stop writing them into so many stories where the Dr wins. Daleks should be the steam rollers in most episodes with the Dr only able to mitigate the damage they cause. Like the evolution of the Daleks where the Daleks win and all the Dr succeeds in doing is saving the human race.

    and along comes 13: attending every funeral, every procession, remembering every name, opting to stay for dinner when her tardis is right outside. I am so hyped to see what she does with the character.

      Yeah sorry to kill your dreams, but the new Doctor is total shit. First problem was casting Jodie Whatever her name is. The series is too political and obviously trying to appease a certain demographic which ruins everything people liked about the older series'. Its unfunny, and even though I hated Peter, I hate Jodie FAR more because at least I saw effort put in that series. Honestly, after Matt Smith, the series died for me. Even Bradley Walsh cant save the new series...
      If you want good space adventures with interesting characters, stories and freedom, go back to the old series.

      Looking back at this comment, I wish I had a TARDIS myself...
      That way I could travel back in time before casting and make the producers re-watch every season, every doctor, and every companion’s face once more and ask one simple thing from all the notes they have been forced to take to remember what the show was and is to all of their fans, employees, and families who watch this show and just ask them: Doctor Who?
      And also wtf were they thinking of making this season better than all the previous without destroying its past. They just took a random woman and said “ok bazinga” and called it “a new season” without giving Jodie any personality or characteristics from the previous doctors. In fact this season felt like a completely different show!

    Man when he said the Doctor was a Good Dalek...3rd degree burn right there, not many can render the Doctor speechless, but he did it. I remember later on when he comes across the Dalek again, and it's been a busy bee, exterminating all the Daleks in the Doctor's name. Really showcases why he is their "Predator".

    If only things would more "actually happen" in this series. The constant dialog about someone being the most dangerous - yet him not doing anything - might work better in novels. In a TV show it smells like Bold and Beauty drama. I'm not trying to bash anything... I enjoy the series. But still.

      I think it still works. He's dangerous to those who call him enemy and to those who call him friend. He's not dangerous because he tries to be, at least not always, but he's dangerous without meaning too be or wanting to be. Friend, foe, no one is truly safe when it comes to him.
