**IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION**: Once you receive your new baby.. DON'T put them on the warm side if it was cold out, OR put them on the cool side if it was warm out. Let your baby sit inside their shipping container for about 20-30 mins so they can warm up, or cool down to room temperature.. Then put them in their new home.. as long as the warm side is 85-90 degrees and cool side 75-82 degrees.. I wasn't that detailed in the video on that advice. Thanks for watching!

If you've done the research and know what you need, look on geckos etc, i bought mine from them. They ship mondays and wednesdays. And he started adjusting quickly.

I want one too! I’ve wanted one for years… then Covid happened so I didn’t get it. For such a specialty pet and living around my area without any near pet shops, I wasn’t comfortable with making that commitment yet. Well, we’re passed Covid now (I hope) so here I am again trying to soak up as much information that I can because in the Spring, hopefully, I’m going to get a baby Western Hognose. This will also be my first snake. I’ve already bought him 200 water bowls, 63 hides (lol I’m exaggerating a bit but I have bought him A LOT and multitudes of it)… To be honest, I’m so nervous I’m going to mess something up. If anyone has any advice on this particular species and/or has snake experience advice, I’m happily all ears! ❤
PS. I know I pronounced "Terrarium" wrong, I'm from New Jersey lol.

You should let your snake acclimate to the ambient temperature of your house slowly. If they are cold when they come, do NOT stick him straight in the warm end. It can kill them at worst.
I agree, good point. Usually, once you get your babies they either have a ice pack or heat pack, depending the time of year, temp, etc. I usually keep my babies inside the room for 30 mins before adding them to their new home. ;-)

I live in a cold place he's definitely gunna be cold when I first get him. Thanks for that info that'll save me money.
I like a hide on the hot side and the cold side and a few cluttery things in between, like plants, sticks, or cute little skulls or cork bark hollow logs. Or the half logs. My king always comes up and tries to climb out when I open the tank. I think it's just an opportunistic feeding response, thinks I'm feeding so he comes out and stretches out to me all cute like, thinks he's getting food but he's getting my hand :) loves hand to hand and the only thing I get nervous about is losing him when I handle him but he's NEVER darty or nippy

Hello! So i saw you use a UTH heater at night, do you have that on a separate timer? That way it kicks when the light turns off
I just got my first juvenile male (17 weeks) and when introducing him to his enclosure he immediately started burrowing (as expected), however it has been 3-4 days now and the most activity I have seen from him during the day is some movement of the substrate under the warm hide, I have been monitoring the temperature gradient nonstop and regulating it with a thermostat. My main concern is not seeing him surface at all to drink from the water bowl that I have been changing the water for regularly. I would also like to attempt feeding but I don't want to stress the snake by bothering it when it is burrowing. Most places I have looked online have said to not worry about it and leave the snake be. I have always bred and kept other reptiles, but this is my first experience with snakes, so any advice would be appreciated. your channel is awesome and very informative for me right now, thanks!
You're welcome, and thanks for watching. I think he'll be ok. Sometimes it takes them a couple days to week to get use to their surroundings. Try to feed him after a week. You should be fine.

Do you keep other species as well? I just ordered a hognose but I have a California king snake and my wife just got a corn
Not now I do not.. I do plan on expanding to other species in the next 2 years.. I hope you enjoy your snakes... I love Cali kings.. beautiful snakes!
@@HogginOut cali king's have a rep for being bitey but mine has never bit me or anybody. Beautiful high white morph. Wife's corn is a tessara and my hoggie is a redline anaconda morph. Might try my hand at breeding some day soon
Do you put them right in aspen shavings from day 1 or do you keep them on paper towels for a couple weeks to make sure they’re pooping normally…?
I use paper towels on one side and aspen on the warm side, until they hit 20g. I feed them on the paper towel side.
I’m seriously considering a hognose, but was hoping to have a natural looking habitat. Is aspen snake bedding a must? Or can I use potting soil and/or sand as well? Thanks. 🐍
I’m pretty sure sand isn’t good for them not sure about potting soil MAYBE eco earth not sure but I’d say stick to aspen bedding is what I’m hearing but people have their opinions
I would use aspen, it's very good for hoggies, plus is has very very low dust, which could harm your hoggies respiratory system. You can use natural drift wood, and stuff like that, but make sure to boil it first to eliminate any harmful bacteria and such. Let me know if you get one and what you get. Cheers

Do you feel a heating pad and heating lamp are necessary? I was planning on just using a heating pad. Thanks for the info.
I would do either or both.. Depending if you use a lamp and turn it off at night.. I wouldn't let your room temp far below 72 degrees.. Hope this helps. ;-)
To add.. I use a lamp from 8am to 7pm (tops the warm side around 92-94 degrees on the substrate.. my room temp stays at 72 degrees in the winter time at night with the house heater on.. A heating pad would be nice for nice toasty overnight temps to 80-82 degrees, but not needed imo. ;-)
Finally.. I would not let your substrate temp fall below 72 degrees.. Always thermal read it to make sure.

My room is pretty hot do you think I need a heating pad?
Only in the winter, depending if the terrarium is near a cold wall. Other than that, no need for one imo.
My parents are against the idea of me getting a hognose. The reasoning? My mom is afraid of venomous snakes. I have done research on western hognoses for a little over a year now. I have calculated up the pricing, schedules, lifestyle, and risks. My only main concern i had was that i will forget to feed it, due to my horrible time perception. However, i am aware that this is a huge responsibility, and i am prepared. Could you perhaps point out the flaws in my mother's reasoning? Or maybe provide a new, experienced perspective? If you have any further questions about my situation before your verdict, i will be happy to answer them.
Maybe tell her that the venom isn’t that bad for most cases, and that’s if it even gets in you. They rarely bite, let alone long enough for their rear fangs to puncture skin. Not many people have too bad of a reaction to the venom anyways, as it’s nowhere near as strong as other notably venomous snakes
as western hognose snakes use belly to absorb warmth they need heating pads not lamps, as far as i know
This is wrong. You can use lamps to warm the substrate as well (the part their belly lays on). Plus it's more natural for them, over using just heating pads.. I do use pads at night though.
Is it okay if I put a baby in a 20 gallon tank and if not could I put a divider in the tank?
20 gallon is fine for a baby. I use a 34 gallon for one of my hoggies, and she actually likes the additional room.

I use one of these ^^^^.. I like it. Just make sure to use the correct wattage bulb in it. Prob a 50-75 watt, depending on the height of the terrarium.

Hi! I've had my juvenile for a week. The breeder gave me info conflicting with everything I've read so I'm really confused...
He's not come out much. He's always burrowed in a corner by the hot side. The hot hide is about the UTH and I keep it around 88-90 (breed told me 83??). The aspen on top is basically room temp.
Oh and he didn't eat after 5 days. He was very curious and finally explored / slithered over the fuzzie.
Do I need a light?
Congrats on the baby! I use lights in the day time, and heating pad at night. My hogs seem to like it. I put the heat pad on the warm side under a hide, so they are nice and comfy at night, since hoggies are diurnal. Make sure to test the substrate heat after the heating pad warms up.. bottom infrared test should be around 85 at night. The substrate temp on the warm should be 85-95 day. Cool side 75-80 day and night. The heat lamp should also over the same hide on the warm side. Don't worry about your baby hiding, most do. A heating lamp would bring them out to warm up, a heating pad will keep them under the aspen. Just a few ideas for you. I hope they help.

I just a 25 gallon reptiles terrarium for $89.00 that with taxes.
I got my Hognose 12 days ago and I’ve searched thru a lot of stuff I bought my hognose a heating pad and thermostat and also infrared thermometer I’m just wondering also because I’m a beginner and I don’t want nothing to happen to my snake it’s hot where I live but I have AC on At night mostly day time and when I picked it up from fed ex the box came with ice pack plz let me know what’s best for my snake if the heat pad is good for him..
I haven’t put him to any heat because of my concerns and couldn’t buy it when I ordered him and got him and today I ordered those things
As long at you infrared the bottom on the cool and warm sides you should be fine. Don’t let the temp fall below 70 degrees.. if so, that might put them off feed. Hoggies need at least 85 degrees on the warm side to digest their food in a healthy way.

@@vivib2233 Under 20g you should be feeding every 5 days... I have tips and tricks videos to help him to get back on feed.. Check them out if you want. Just make sure the warm side is around 80-85 degrees day and night.

I got my baby 3 days ago and shes just hiding underground. Is that normal? Temp and humidity. Is great but she wont come put. Ordered extra small pinkies from rodentpro and im going to try feeding her for the first time. I was just concerned with the fact that she has been underground for 3 days
She might be in shed.. check her eyes. They hide when they go into shed.. she might be active at night and not day.. that could and should change over time. It will take up to 2 weeks for your new baby to be more active with their surroundings. Hope this helps and let me know..
And to add.. my female Autumn hides all day and rarely see her out.. some just have the skittish personality. They might rid that personality with some help, or may just grow out of it.

Don't put your snake straight in a heated terrarium if they're cold. They can die of shock. Make sure they get to room temperature first.
