Over the past few months I have decided to make changes to my husbandry. I now would recommend using a halogen bulb on a dimmer for your hot spot, and uvb for all snakes. Of course, you’ll want to research which halogen wattage and uvb light will work best for your specific animal, but this is what I have started to change all of my enclosures to. I no longer feel like a ceramic heat emitter and/or heat mat will provide the correct type of heat to help these animals thrive, and those types of heat should be used for supplemental use only for increasing ambient temps and helping with the heat gradient. :)

I agree if the enclosure is great you have a happy snake the bigger the better

I would just add an UVB light since they're also active during the day

Also, don’t know why I didn’t add this but a hognose shouldn’t be on a pinky mouse forever. They should be moved up to bigger mice as they age.

wow im glad I got recommended this ive been really thinking about getting a western hognose as my first snake. Do you think you need a heat lamp and a heating pad or should a heating pad with a thermometer be enough? Also another question ive been wondering is how often do you need to change the aspen bedding?

I try to not go longer than 3 months when changing my aspen but I’m sure many people have different opinions. A heat mat with a thermostat should be fine but honestly my hognose seems to use the heat lamp more than some of my other snakes

As long as you regularly spot clean you can use them shedding as a schedule of when to change out the bedding. That's what a breeder friend of mine does.😊

I just use a head pad

Also, I would say changing your aspen every 3 months is only if you are spot cleaning everyday.

Hi great video🔥wanted to ask since I'm going to be making a bioactive enclosure for my hognose.will abg mix be good as substrate.and another thing is can I just use a heat lamp or do I need a heating pad

ABG would be fine if they can burrow. I use both a lamp and heat pad but just one of those should be fine as long as there is a heat gradient

@@mogamatgoesniejappie6979 I think a hognose would do fine with soil but I’d prefer aspen
