  • Instructions on how to setup a hognose snake enclosure. I go over what works best for us when we set up the enclosure. We go over the enclosure itself. What heating elements to use. What bedding to use. What kind of hides. Different types of enrichment. Plus I have my helper Finn to go through it all.

I love his smile when he talks about how cute they are when they're tunneling!! good to see a young man who appreciates these beautiful creatures ^_^ This was very informative as I'm prepping for my first juvenile, thank you both for the excellent tutorial~

Finn is such a smart young man! You can tell he’s very knowledgeable about his hognose snakes! I really enjoyed this, I always love family videos on hognose snakes!

Dreamer- Thank you so much! Finn was very excited about your kind comment. I always worry about the comments we may get from people when the kids are involved.

Would you suggest the same setup for a 20 gallon and a juvenille hognose? (about a year old).

Yes. It's basically the same, just at a larger scale. 😃

Great video guys! I’m preparing my first Exo Terra small/low terrarium for a baby hoggie I’m picking up this weekend. Any concerns about belly-burn using a heat mat for a burrowing snake? For that reason, I’m leaning towards heat lamp…

Belly burns are always a possibility with an under the tank heater. We put all of ours through a thermostat and check the surface temps with a heat gun every few days. The reason we use the heat mats is because they need any light source turned off at night. So they would also need something like a ceramic heat emitter to keep the temps up at night. I just didn't want that much stuff to deal with on top of the tank. 😄 Don't forget that even the overhead heat sources should be on a thermostat. Anywho, it's totally a personal preference type of thing. But both work well and should be able to keep your new baby cozy warm. I'm so excited for you!

You don't need a basking lamp for a hognose? Could you use a heat mat and a very low wattage basking lamp together? Also do you leave heat mat on 24/7? Was also told to turn heat off at night.

Hi there! We do not use basking lamps for them because we have the under the tank heaters on thermostats set to 85°f. You do not need both forms of heat. We do not turn off the heat source at night. This is just how we do it here. It works well for us, and our babies are happy and healthy. You will hear different ways of keeping them from many different people. They may all work just fine. It depends on what works best for you! It can even change bases on your location and temperature you keep your house at. My best advice it to research the different ways to keep them, apply them to your specific location and home situation, and see what works best for you. Keep a close eye on the temperatures using an actual heat gun and tweak things as needed. Don't forget to have fun with your baby!!

Thanks so much. I bought a heat mat and was way too big to fit under 10 gallon. Tried on side but didn’t work. I was just told heat won’t go through substrate. But going to buy a different brand and try that. I do have thermostat and temp gun. Personally I don’t want to use a light as she is albino. Breeder told me basking spot of between 90 and 93. But, he also said there is a range of temps that will work. Your way seems so much easier and straightforward. Thanks
