- Hey Pet People!
Welcome back for another fun video featuring your favorite little hognose - WILBUR! While this is not a step-by-step of how to set up an enclosure, this is the process that I go through when setting up his enclosure.
As I have said MANY times during this video, this was something I randomly decided to do about an hour before I went into work. Today (the day I filmed this) was tank cleaning day so I decided to COMPLETELY clean out and re-do his enclosure. I hope you all enjoyed today's video and stay tuned for next week's video!

I love the set up! Totally agree about the natrule habitat mimics
Thanks for the video, Lexia! I'm sure Wilbur is treated great in that enclosure.
Awesome video! Can’t wait to see what’s next!
Great video and great information, thank you!
Aw haha hes so sweet xD Just got myself a western hognose last week hes 4 months old but still pretty tinnyyy n hes settling well! Subbed too you btw videos are good!
Keep up the hard work
I've now ordered my setup 😊 so I'm hoping next month I can go back to the reptile centre and pick up the albino hognose I handled on Thursday 😁
That is great! I am so glad you found a hoggie you liked and that you are able to get yourself this new little friend. Please keep me updated on him/her when they arrive!
What size is your tank because i want a hoggie but i dont know what size tank a need.
Hi,I’m getting my first snake ever and it’s a hognose snake do you have any product links and advice for a newbie haha?
the auto caption before the video started in preview was funny it says ypur name is wet Chia
that amuses me to no end...maybe I'll start watching my vidoes with captions now
Thx my snake gets here Tuesday
Do you not use a thermostat?
Do you need a heat lamp too?? Or is the heat pad enough?? I need to upgrade my hognose into her adult enclosure but with a bigger tank I’m not sure if that changes what’s necessary for the temp gradient.
Hi! Often times with hog noses if you have a heat pad connected to a monitor/something to keep it at a set temperature then all they need is a heat pad! (Unless you live in somewhere where it is like 50° in your room, then I suggest a lamp to keep up).
As long as you have the gradient there and give a cooler / hot spot gradient then whichever you choose is fine! Meaning whether it be a lamp or mat.
I hope this helped! :)
I would also like to add that while it is not necessary, I am adding a UBV bulb to his tank. I just did not have it in video because I ordered my new set of bulbs, you need to update them every 6 months.
If you have a desert UBV bulb that will also give off some heat as well, so keep that in mind.
Once i get my hognose im gonna spoil him/her so much
Thanks for this video. Your enclosure looks amazing! My 9 year old son just got his first snake today... tiny little baby hognose he named Kronk. And we are already in love with him. 🥰
Hello! I know this is kind of a silly question but at what temperature do the heat spot need to be? Like how much should I set the heat mat or lamp to?
Hi! I thought I mentioned this and apologize for leaving exact temperatures out. Hog nose hot spots should be 88-90° while the cooler side can be between 78-80°. Obviously during the night time you can drop lower to around 75 but I do not recommend going lower than that temperature.
Lexia's Pets thank you for responding! Your channel is awesome thanks!
Can you keep a hognose in a huge 4ft long enclosure? Because I have a spare setup that’s huge and really want one, but I’ve heard some say “too big” causes stress? Others say the bigger the better.
Hi , "bigger the better" is true- to an extent. Unfortunately I believe that a 4ft length is far too big for a hognose, and would be better suited for a snake like a ball python, not a hognose. I hope this helped!
i think it could work, if you made sure to decorate it with many many hides, but i think its a better idea to use it for a bigger snake
do they only need a heat source only in the winter or just one heat source in general
Like all snakes, they need a year around heat source!
Hi your videos are really great. I really wanna convince my parents to get me a snake how do you think I should do it aka ask them. How do you think a hognose snake would be a good snake for a person who has never had a snake as a pet
the way i convinced mine was just explaining to them how to take care of one. they only get fed once a week and are pretty easy to take care of so it doesn’t change your lifestyle like the way getting a puppy would. you can easily go through high school, college, and after with the same snake and never struggle to keep up. hognose snakes are great, i have one myself. he has a cute little nose and isn’t threatening at all. they can be a bit hissy at first but won’t ever bite. one of the best beginner snakes. go through a reptile shop, not petco or petsmart and make sure you listen to the directions they give you and do your research. if you know what you’re doing, theyre easy and fun.
I know this is a bit old but I am considering getting a hognose, I was wondering if u had any regrets, recommendations for the heating mat
@Kaitlyn yea I have done a lot of research for maybe a year now. I finally decided to pull the trigger and got every set up and will be getting my hognose sometime Wednesday. Definitely a bit nervous cuz I don’t want him having a bad life or anything like that. The only worried I have currently is getting the right size pinky. Since I won’t really touch her for the first week, that should give me time to determine size.
Hi, I am so sorry I never responded! My comments on older videos get filtered out alot! I have zero regrets about my hognose, or any of my reptiles really. I've been doing this 9yrs now & I agree with the other comment in saying do as much research as you can, then once you have the animal continue to do your research. There are constant updates to the "reccomend" care within the reptile community due to finding out more about certain species care as time goes on.
Some hognoses have issues eating right off the bat, but something I have learned is to take away the light if you have one. Most hoggies are bred in tubs so they can be over stimulated by light, but other than that I haven't encountered any issues with my lovely Wilbur.
Once again I apologize for the late response but I hope this helped!
@@lexiaspets1532 all good thank you for the response. I end up making an enclosure similar to the one you have in this video. I think the one thing I have learn in the last few days of having him here. Is that he likes to spend a lot of time under aspen. I have done some research and it seems that is because the heating mat is underneath and because he is still getting used to his surroundings. Hopefully he won’t be shy soon so I get to see him a bit more often.
Sorry to ask but where did you find that lovely tree sort of thing? if you could get back to me that would be great !
Hello! I believe I got it from Amazon...I think I typed in "desert terrarium decor" or "terrarium decor desert tree"...
If you cannot find it let me know & I can try to hunt it down for you!
@@lexiaspets1532 Thank you! This means a lot because personally i care a lot about the looks but honestly thank you so much!
Is it safe to have a reptile in a room with a AC on?
Yes, just not directly under an AC vent & ensure that they have a heating unit of some type (heat bulb/heat mat). As long as you can keep the heat gradient up it will be fine!
