The look of a dude who knows he fucking rules but isn’t a dick about it. How can you not love this man, a true legend that deserves all the respect he gets from the metal community.
I respect the absolute hell out of people who know how good they are, but allow their talent to speak for itself. If only more professional athletes would follow this example.
Dev has such an interesting story. His entire career he basically had two sides to his music, a super heavy main band, and weirder solo stuff like from this all the way to ambient melodies basically. He finally had a mental breakdown in the mid 2000s and sought help, and found out he was massively bipolar and the two sides to his music was basically his untreated illness expressing itself the whole time. Now that hes doing better it all comes together and its beautiful.
Good for him getting help. I shrug in horror, though, thinking he could've become a trap "musician" as a side gig. That thing seems to have started back in the 80s, much to my surprise.
This is the best reaction I've seen. Everybody can analyse his fry screams etc, but who the heck notices that he stops tapping his foot for a scream? Wow.
For sure. I have watched pretty much every reaction video there is out there for this song, and that's the first time I've seen someone point that out , or noticed it myself!
mobiusII It does so much fun watching all the reaction videos for this huge song. I need to say that this and the Video which Rebecca uploaded are the best !
The whole part with the "epic guitar solo" is just Devin trolling the audience. Some context: EMG TV, is the youtube channel of guitar pickup manufacturer EMG and usually they have famous guitarplayers, endorsed by their company, playing some epic shredding solos. Devin is in fact a very skilled guitarist and naturally people would expect him playing some epic solo here, instead he´s trolling us by playing the most basic guitar chords.
Some years ago Devin was scheduled to play on a Dutch metal festival. It was cancelled last minute because of a storm, so Devin went to the McDonalds next door and did a signing session. Cool guy.
My first metal concert ever was Devin Townsend and Children of Bodom back in 2011. Devin played an amazing set and then immediately jumped into the pit and went nuts with all of us while Alexi Laiho shredded the hell out for 45 minutes. At the time I don't think I was able to really appreciate just how special that night was, but now it's one of my most cherished memories.
This is true, he does these altruistic events during the pandemic even though it has come out through side channels that he may be struggling himself. The fact that he loves providing his art to others above his own self-interests is a trait that sadly many of us lack.
@@coldblade666 Devin has done three home "concerts" for medical facilities in Canada, UK and US (I attended the 2nd and 3rd, but didn't hear about the 1st one in time), but he also appealed for some help for himself www.gofundme.com/f/DevinTownsendSupportTeam This is not a criticism at all, as I donated to that fund too. Devin is amazing and his music enhances my life.
You're the first reactor who straight away realized that his "most epic guitar solo" was satire. Most other reactors would let that fly over their heads and keep reacting.
i love how she actually reacts. i mean, this woman has deep, complicated, and interesting feelings about the musicians vocal sound and techniques in the first 20 seconds of the vocals. and she is so expressive about everything. its great. and, she just seems so happy to hear great vocal performances, regardless of genre. honestly, this channel is refreshing.
One of the most wholesome things I've discovered is watching vocal coaches discover Devin Townsend and seeing them develop crushes on him in real time. Love this video.
It really is a blessing for us, the common people, that such a qualified artist reacts this true way about what artists do in good music, with great explanations so we can all understand. What a great channel to learn about talented singers and to honor the art of music!
@@TheCharismaticVoice It's true. You should see Stu Block when he sang for Into Eternity. From melodic crooning, vocal fry and deep growls to high falsetto. Into Eternity - Timeless Winter
The Charismatic Voice - I’ve watched people react to this video a hundred times, and NOBODY had explained the “Park and Bark”! So awesome you picked that up!!!
If you listen closely, at some point you hear a female vocal in the song. That is Anneke van Giersbergen. She is Devins favorite female collaborator. She is featured on several of Devins albums (6 at least) and tours. Check out etc: "Grace" - "Supercrush" - "Awake" - "Numbers" - Pixillate" and many more. All live. Believe you me, you wont regret it.
Watching her watching him is one of the most intriguing things I've seen. She is looking at him the same way kids look at the world; a mixture of curiosity, perplexity, and admiration.
I've prob seen most of them, but her reaction is so pure, and even in the midst of her emotional reaction to Devin she's a sharp analyst. Both charming and insightful. I've watched this reaction vid more time than I care to admit, lol.
Devin is a tormented soul, who channels all his emotions (fear, joy, anger, depression, etc...) through music. A true artist. He's as true as it gets. What you see it's not a persona, it's his true character. And he's a very talented singer and guitarist
Probably the ugliest man I've ever had a longstanding crush on. My introduction to his music was the first sounds of the underground tour, 2006 I think. I just started watching him again today cuz I'm addicted to reaction videos and I'm positively stunned. Its like a twilight zone episode. All these young beautiful women are just mesmerized, falling in love with him. I watched one girl react to kingdom, then show up for her next Devin reaction all dressed up and giggley like he was actually going to be there. Its insane! I bet he still doesn't believe he's attractive though. Dumbass. Devin Townsend would be attractive no matter what he looked like. It's just his twisted fucked up personality. You can't help but fall for the cute little psycho. Theres something about a guy who's funny, charismatic, talented, oh and no one mentions that he's also insanely intelligent. And now he's good looking too. At this point insecurities have got to be some kind of cosmic balance. I'd probably hate him if he knew how amazing he was. It just wouldn't be fair to the rest of us.
@@wookiespet fact is Devin suffers from bipolar disorder, and also from synesthesia. He described in a chat with the guys from the channel "That Pedal Show" (guitar gear maniacs channel.... for those who don't play guitar ) as seeing sounds as colors. He also states that his son has this perceptual "deviation". He's a kind of a singularity. He stated all over again that he wouldn't be able to play anything from his old repertoire (e.g. Strapping Young Lad) since that brutal stuff was a way to channel the emotions he felt at that time, which he can't connect to anymore. Music is just the way he found to convey his emotions, and at least for me it shows in his songs. He's a beautiful soul. You might not like his music, but I can't understand how can someone might hate on him
@@MetalMike87 oh man, something must have gotten lost in translation here buddy. I love his old and his new music. at least i love what Ive heard so far.I am in no way hating on Mr Townsend. the longstanding crush still stands. We have bipolar disorder in common he and I. I didn't know about the synesthesia though. in fact this is the first time I've ever heard of it. but it makes sense though. Honestly I'm just finding dark humor in the fact that these females would have never taken a second look at him back in the day. I'm strangely proud of my favorite living rockstar. (sorry Devy, Dave Brockie will always be my #1 fav) As far as anyone hating on him it would be easy to see happening as a jealousy thing. I said id probably hate him if he DID know how awesome he was. Id hate anyone that blessed if they were smug or pretentious about it. But devin is the kind of guy who could paint a masterpiece whileplaying a masterpiece, while joking and making a whol;e room of ppl laugh, and still admire and apreciate the shitty stick figure you took a half an hour to draw. and his admiration would be sincere. @@MetalMike87 We good. hey I'm trying to get my fav reaction channels to give the devin townsend project a listen. would you care to join me? no is an acceptable answer.
Oh man.. can't wait for this... Elizabeth, everyone is going to ask for Deadhead at RAH... but as I've said before in your comments, he does Deadhead at Plovdiv with a full orchestra and it is awesome... but his talent, skill, and personality is on full display at either one. One thing, if you do the version at RAH.. make sure you pause and rewind it quite a bit... it's been getting blocked for some reactors lately.
Deadhead is all about the strong vocals though. I feel an orchestra takes the focus away from that. Don't get me wrong Plovdiv is great, but RAH is much better.
@Poly Bun Skullet Devi is the best!! One day i want to relive again is the first time i saw SYL live and nearly died from a bad stage dive.... but i did NOT land on my head and moshed on! so good!
i too know him from SYL, and yeah. it's like 15 separate humans and 3 velociraptors live in his larynx rent free. i am enjoying this subgenre of plopping a modern medical mystery like Devin in front of these humble vocal coaches just trying to make a living. what are they supposed to do about several decades' worth of sustained and perfectly pitched whistletone screaming. nothing. devy trolls us by existing
Because Devin stopped it in its tracks. He was done with the project, even though they were gaining a lot of steam at the time. The rest of the band didn’t want to end, but it was his band and he opted to end it.
Samael I just went down the same rabbit hole other people did. It’s an excellent video. His song Grace is also really good. But I haven’t heard too much more than that. It’s only been a week. Lol
His guitar non-solo was a joke. EMG is a type of guitar pickup, and they feature guitarists who use their pickups usually playing very fast and aggressive guitar instrumentals. He is actually a skilled lead guitar player, which was what most of the people watching were expecting to see. He has another song on the channel "Willy Wonka", which is an instrumental full of difficult playing. I think that a lot of his facial expressions while screaming are just acting ; sort of a tongue in cheek (not literally) expression of a malevolent, scary character. You can tell by how quickly he transitions from that face into a more comedic one. Then there's the juxtaposition between the impression of what you just saw and the lyrics.
@@TheCharismaticVoice The piece that R Gray has mentioned is actually called "Willy Wanka"! As you can probably guess it is taking the Michael out of all the folks that shred solos but have no real emotion going on. The thing is Dev can easily do it and in this he does it whilst pulling some of the funniest faces ever committed to camera😁. He is a hoot and very funny. Canadian charm going on! I also would like to recommend (like others) either "Ih Ah" from the Retinal Circus which is a beautiful and charming duet with the utterly delightful Anneke Van Giersbergen (she really is so lovely) along with "Deadhead" from Plovdiv. I love your reactions and this was terrific. Stay safe and take care.
I had the honor of driving him and "project-members" for 3 days here in Holland. He/they had 2 gigs. 3 Days of hilarious laughter!!!! Not only is this guy sooooooo skilled....he is funny as hell!!! I had a blast !!!!
@@paran0id_human0id Well hi there. Yeah...it wàs awesome. He played first in my hometown Leeuwarden, and a day later at Eindhoven a set with Anneke van Giersbergen. (as she is dutch, that was a no-brainerrrr!!) Now maybe I should explain a bit. I am a volunteer at some festivals where i co"rdinate the transportshuttles for artist, mainly metal-oriëntated. But every now and then I do drive myself too. Usually these are single gigs/bands. As w. Devon. I was immediately welcomed as one of the crew. Which as a result, made it possible for me to be ON the stage with the crew at Eindhoven during this gig. Also talked to Anneke and all! The sane I had with Cradle of Filth by the way. That was 4 days, and also beeing a "tourguide" for them in my hometown. Now there is a shy guy in private. My personal high 2 was beeing driving King Diamond around. As I am a lifelong fan of his music, but never have seen him anywhere live, that was an experiance!! Yeah....I can tell you stories....!! Whahahahahahaha Greetz from Holland !
I love how you were so focused on Devin and his performance rather than yourself and rather than trying to entertain your own audience. You were legitimately criticizing his performance. Devin is unbelievably talented, charismatic, and charming as fuck. I can NOT sing a single note, but every time I hear Devin I feel like I could be a superstar! He just makes you feel like singing! If you haven't seen it already I highly recommend the video where he has technical difficulties at a concert, but engages and entertains the audience for.... idk like 20 minutes. He is such a pure being. Out of all of the good songs he has produced 'Coast' is the one that introduced me to him.
Devin gets pretty manic on stage, but he's openly talked about his insecurities and anxieties about performing. The confidence is contrived, even if he truly deserves every ounce of it.
It's about creating a stage presence, possibly even an alter-ego. Lots of band leaders and singers do that. He can be insecure and shy in his normal world interactions, but become essentially someone else when he's on stage. Beyonce and other performers have talked openly about using this technique to get over stage-fright. Many rock and metal performers use costume as part of it, but often you see as they get older they tone it down or just become more confident in their own stage presence. I suspect that this is the case with Devin Townsend.
Love your reaction! Devy is one of a kind! You have become a favourite of mine to watch. Your expressions while listening to music brighten my day. Keep it up and all the best to you and yours!
@@TheCharismaticVoice if I could suggest a song, it would be Grace Live at the Retinal Circus with Anneke VG (can't spell her lot name without looking it up). 2 great singers in 1!
I agree. But it would have been fun if he had played something like "Winter Madness" solo by Wintersun / Teemu Mäntysaari: ua-cam.com/video/DDZkT8d2oU8/v-deo.html Devin could probably pull that off because he's also really good guitarist in addition to other stuff he can do.
Ayreon....Valley of the Queens feat Floor Jansen ,Anneke van Giersbergen and Marcella Bovio..this one will be right up your street !!..also Devin with Anneke -Grace
Of all the reactions to this song that I've watched, you're the only one who's caught, or at least called out, Devin's joke about the "epic" guitar solo, and then he only plays 2 chords. Love it!
From just a vocal standpoint, The Death of Music from the Royal Albert Hall concert since the main driving point is just him singing. It's the shortest ten minutes of your life.
@@TheCharismaticVoice It's got a very tribal feel to it, completely different from kingdom, and puts his full singing range on display. Also, he was extremely sick weeks up to the concert, and so he could perform he altered how he sang so they wouldn't have to cancel the concert. I and many others believe because of this he was trying a lot harder for the fans which resulted in absolute amazing vocals. He makes facial expressions in this concert that he never made before, and since. Keep up the good reactions.
The female voice on the backing track is Anneke Van Giersbergen. She's awesome and has worked with Devin quite a bit. ua-cam.com/video/E1Gwtep2oXw/v-deo.html
Hello, I just wanted to comment on what a delightful breath of fresh air you are in a field thick with reaction videos that feature a person blankly looking at a screen and occasionally going "oh...cool" and generally being clinical bordering on disinterested but hey, gotta get the clicks. I ADORE your genuine response to music. Watching you get blown away by these metal artists AND adding your own experience/commentary as an artist yourself has been an absolute treat for me. Especially now. Devin Townsend is a never ending source of inspiration for me. I've been a fan of his since he was in Steve Vai's band, through Strapping Young Lad, and all his various solo endeavors. I echo the sentiments of others in this thread that should you react to more of Devin's music: you MUST do "Deadhead". Plodiv is great, there's an orchestra which is fun, but for my money, his performance of the song at Royal Albert Hall is unmatched in intensity, emotion, and of course, humor. Thank you for what you do. Again, your pure delight in reacting to this music is a wonderful thing to behold. It brings me so much joy, and I can't thank you enough for that.
I don't think Devin himself knows exactly how he makes his scream, he's one of the the one-in-a-million prodigys who just one day realized he could sing like this and has been doing it ever since with no vocal coaching or lessons whatsoever.
I don't know if it's rare but I agree that it's difficult to explain how to produce such screams. I'm also a metal vocalist/guitar player and it's something that I just tried one day when starting a band (after hearing this on albums). The control over it and range has improved though and I'm also able to do this at a lower volume now. When done correctly the screaming doesn't hurt either for me. Actually, regular yelling wears out my voice much faster.
He mentioned in an interview that he was in the school choir and had extra lessons from the choir master or something like that. That was where he learned his operatic style.
I've heard him say in interviews that he's never been taught how to scream and doesn't like to talk about it, because he's afraid if he thinks too much about he alter what he doing and cause damage. Basically: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Reminds me of Jimmy Barnes. The dude been self taught screaming for forty odd years so apparently his vocal chords have changed to allow him to keep doing it.
The most impressive part of this is that Devin admitted to being mostly self taught. He did say that he had a choir teacher named Peter Springer from grades 9-12, but most of his singing ability is just raw talent and determination.
Dear Elizabeth, if you do happen to read this ... if you have not already, and do come across Anneke van Giersbergen, please don't miss out on her music video "Feel Alive". While the song is rather pop-ish in sound and maybe not the most impressive in vocal virtues, when it comes to communicating/conveying emotions, Anneke totally nailed it there. I don't think I've ever seen that video without getting shivers down spine, and teary eyes. I have a feeling you won't be disappointed.
@David Jackson Yes, there's some footage of Devin performing "Why" live for the first time in public. He sings with his acoustic guitar & it is bloody amazing to see him interact with his audience. I love Devin's music & antic's, he seems like a pretty cool guy, I think Elizabeth would like his song "Why?".
I really think Devin has the best and healthiest techique for his screaming or raspy voice, whatever u want to call it. It sounds just so clear not much vocalists can do that on a constant level like that.
he does a bit at the start of "dirty black hole" (from sex & religion) where he says his fingers are numb from depriving his brain from oxygen. is that what you mean perhaps?
You must listen the holy Trinity " Funeral"," bastard", "the death of music" live AT Royal Albert Hall. How Can i say....the spirit the Heart the soul......
I agree! The Death of Music is my favorite Devin Townsend Song and that song live At the Royal Albert Hall is amazing! Of course, Funeral, Bastard and The Death of Music in a row, live at the Royal Albert Hall is even better! Deadhead from that same concert is great and all the people talk a lot about that, but I prefer The Death of Music. The video of those 3 songs is here: ua-cam.com/video/1oJEBGHCdBQ/v-deo.html
Agree, it's fantastic. The music video is great, but it's completely animated. If you want to actually see Devin performing the song, he does it in his "Quarantine Concert #1". Which he did from his home studio. For charity. Thrice. And then put them on youtube for free.
@@TheCharismaticVoice Also, forgot to mention. He hasn't been classically trained. I don't think he's even had any professional vocal lessons in his lifetime... as far as I'm aware he just used to practice singing along to lots of varied songs in his car... which in a way makes his ungodly talent even more surreal. :-D
Devin's making a little fun of the usual EMG Live series, which almost always features guitar shredders that play very fast and technical pieces and solos. That's the context of the "Most epic guitar solo in EMG Studios history." EMG primarily makes guitar pickups.
lovely lady everybody's goal in life should be to find someone that looks at them the way you just looked at Devin. Keep going with him. Maybe try Stormbending next. And of course more Nightwish please. Stargazers live at Tampere
To convey how I feel about Devin: I'm a radio show editor and host, and I do tons of interviews. Not afraid of anyone. I'll talk my way out of it. But Devin? As much as I would LOVE to interview him I'd be terrified. He's so outspoken, so intelligent, has such a huge body of work - I'd never do him justice. Damn!
Hi Elizabeth. Short message to give you a few recommandations about Anneke Van Giersbergen : - Devin Townsend Project - Hyperdrive (by a thread) : she's the lead and it's the song that got her on Devin's radar. They did tons of music together since. - Anneke Van Giersbergen & Danny Cavanagh - Leaves (Off The Record) : another collab, just a piano + her voice, she has so much control, you'll be amazed - Within Temptation and Metropole Orchestra - Somewhere (Black Symphony HD 1080p) : with Anneke has a stunning guest. The two voices entertwined are incredible. - Ayreon - Valley Of The Queens (electric castle live) : she's the lead singer, she has two backing vocalists and the three voices make wonders - Anneke van Giersbergen & Árstíðir - Pavane van Fauré : another collab, I'm sure you know the Gabriel Fauré song - Anneke Van Giersbergen - When I am laid in earth (subtitulos español) : yes she loves classical music Her voice is mesmerizing. You'll love it, I promise.
Anneke van Giersbergen & Mike Boddé - When I am Laid in Earth - Purcell | Podium Witteman => might be a better version of the Purcell classic (better quality)
Devin is just maxed out on all of his stats. It's fun watching someone react to him for the first time. Also the host of this channel could not be more charming and likable.
welcome to post devin thompson world, we missed you maam. when i heard this same video for the first time i cried tears of joy. ive never been inspired more by any musician and im a bassist talking about a vocalist. the taelnt is off the chart, like him or not
Devin is so eclectic and I love it. He sings clean, he screams, he sings high and ethereal, and he sings with a lot of impact and power. Empath is one of my favorite albums.
One of the reasons that I love your channel, Elizabeth, is because these songs alone make me feel a certain way. But when I watch your videos of my favorite songs, you have such a way with words, that it brings me to tears. I'M NOT CRYING..........YOU'RE CRYING!!!!!
This will probably get buried, and I know you'll be bombarded with other Devin suggestions, but... PLEASE check out "Why" from his Quarantine Show, and "Failure" live from Plovdiv. Both are amazing examples of his range and control.
I'm actually quite surprised by the number of people who have recommended "Why" over other Devin songs - and specifically are pointing to his Quarantine Show. This recommendation has quickly risen to the top of Devin recommendations thus far!
@@TheCharismaticVoice 'Why' is truly a wonderful showcase of his vocals... even Devy admits, it's kinda difficult for him to sing it right off the bat. You'll love it!
@@TheCharismaticVoice They're recommending because it will suit you, its as near to opera (loosely speaking!!) Devin has done, Its known as his Disney song. I'd suggest the studio version as you'll wonder what the hells going on in the live ones, he really does play to the crowd!!!!! ... Don't know if anyone has answered you but no he's not classically trained. He did some vocals for a Steve Vai album then went on to form Strapping young lad an extreme metal group in the late 90's that's where his vocal fry comes from, it seems to be natural and how ever he does it seems to suit him. As some others have also suggested 'The death of music' either Plovdiv or Royal albert hall for the goosebumps and Grace (the retinal circus version) with Anneke for the show are both must do's. Enjoy Devins world!!! ;)
The Charismatic Voice That performance in particular is recommended because it's a song from his last album so there aren't much live good quality versions of the song on the internet yet. I totally agree you should do this song, deadhead is just a showcase for what's possible and I like it a lot as well, so I don't mind if you do both! Hahah
Is it too soon, to say that all Elizabeth's roads are inevitably destined to end up at Ayreon? First Floor, now Devin... and if she hasn't already, I'm sure she will listen to Simone and Anneke at some point too. From there, one can just run down the list of other people who have worked with Arjen Lucassen. I'm always amused by how few people (apparently) have heard about him and his Ayreon projects, and then to see how amazed they are when they finally do.
That list also includes Russell Allen from Symphony X, Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden, Damian Wilson from Threshold, James LsBrie from Dream Theater, Hansi Kürsch from Blind Guardian, Jorn Lande from Masterplan, Marco from Nightwish, Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth, Neal Morse from Spock's Beard, Ty Tabor from King's X and Marcela Bovio from Stream of Passion. And that's just the partial list!
The "By a Thread" concert performance of Kingdom is godly. Not only does he hit some amazing pitches in his screams, but he's backed up by Anneke van Giersbergen who adds so much to the soaring majestic sound.
Perfect woman. And of course this man Devin , has helped me through a lot of my problems , and as a guitarist myself , has helped me express myself , these pair will always have a place in my heart x .
This is by far the best Kingdom reaction. Not only that, it's so enjoyable to watch how you're analyzing his voice and techniques, you clearly love your work! Awesome job! subbed ;)
Devin's personally one of my favorite vocalists in metal. After his days being the lead singer of Strapping Young Lad, I'm surprised he's still got any vocal chords left. If you ever get the time to listen, "Dire/ Consequence," "Relentless," "Love?," and "Detox" are all worthy of the ears. Thank you for giving him time on your platform!
I rewatch this pretty regularily. You have the most expressive reactions to things, you say so much using just your eyes (I relate), and you get really excited about the technical aspects of voice and singing (which helps someone like me engage and learn more easily). I hope you and your family are doing well!
The foot-tapping comment was amazing. I've seen the original video a million times and never noticed that. Great commentary all in all. Really insightful; thanks a lot!
I was completely mesmirised by your facial expressions. I usually don't watch react videos as I find them way too staged but you can't fake that level of enthusiasm and positivity.
Arjen Anthony Lucassen gave him leave to write and record his vocal parts for The Human Equation. He got multi-tracked walls of sound for the character Rage. That flipped my coin like never. Thank you for the wisdom shared, it's astounding to me.
I'm going to agree with the not-Deadhead group in the comments. It's an amazing piece of music and I love the song, and you should listen to it at some point. I just don't think it's the best for a vocal coach video, the vocals are minimal and there are much more interesting songs from . Grace and Ih-Ah from The Retinal Circus set both have Anneke van Giersbergen and the combination of the two voices works really well. March of the Poozers and Universal flame from Live at the Royal Albert Hall sound vocally interesting, to me at least.
Considering the vocal coaches that have their mouth wide open and their jaws dropped, and then say that he’s a classically trained on his top though it’s… You couldn’t be more wrong and you obviously haven’t seen a reaction video to this performance before.
That was supposed to say “he sounds classically trained” on his top notes. I know that he is self taught . But that makes this performance even more incredible.
@@Rosannasfriend It's an almost 8 minute song with like 3-4min of vocals. I'm not talking quality of vocals, I'm talking about the percentage of the song that has them.

Also IIRC this was the first episode of EMG TV as well. Also I'm too lazy to fact check... So there's that.

Some years ago Devin was scheduled to play on a Dutch metal festival. It was cancelled last minute because of a storm, so Devin went to the McDonalds next door and did a signing session. Cool guy.
That's just awesome. What a great guy

Absolutely agreed, the fact he's 1000000% personality is just an added bonus
Devin needs to be a voice actor for a Disney movie. I bet he can create a million different character voices and sing amazing in all of them.

You're the first reactor who straight away realized that his "most epic guitar solo" was satire. Most other reactors would let that fly over their heads and keep reacting.
I saw a reactor who is a guitar player who knew he was taking the piss right away.
Its not that he couldn't do the most epic, he just didn't.
Not to take away the fact that he is an incredible great guitar player and has often said he prefers it over singing
i love how she actually reacts. i mean, this woman has deep, complicated, and interesting feelings about the musicians vocal sound and techniques in the first 20 seconds of the vocals. and she is so expressive about everything. its great. and, she just seems so happy to hear great vocal performances, regardless of genre. honestly, this channel is refreshing.
Devin acts like a clown on stage. But during interviews, he sounds like
"The adult in the room." A sign of true professionalism.
Maturity goes with not taking yourself too seriously.

If you listen closely, at some point you hear a female vocal in the song. That is Anneke van Giersbergen. She is Devins favorite female collaborator.

Lolol, I was so confused at first, and then caught-on.
@@TheCharismaticVoice The piece that R Gray has mentioned is actually called "Willy Wanka"! "He almost seems like he has two voices." Yes ma'am. He's the literal avatar of wrath and poetry. Guy is a strange kind of legend.
Devin gets pretty manic on stage, but he's openly talked about his insecurities and anxieties about performing. The confidence is contrived, even if he truly deserves every ounce of it.
Otium Borealis Bo Burnham is a good example.
Devin is one of the most humble and down to earth people in rock music.

I think I saw a study about screams are very similar to the cry of babies when done right.

Really looking forward to your reaction Elizabeth, with you it doesn’t get any better, thank you girl :-)
Short message to give you a few recommandations about Anneke Van Giersbergen :
- Devin Townsend Project - Hyperdrive (by a thread) : she's the lead and it's the song that got her on Devin's radar. They did tons of music together since.
- Anneke Van Giersbergen & Danny Cavanagh - Leaves (Off The Record) : another collab, just a piano + her voice, she has so much control, you'll be amazed
- Within Temptation and Metropole Orchestra - Somewhere (Black Symphony HD 1080p) : with Anneke has a stunning guest. The two voices entertwined are incredible.
- Ayreon - Valley Of The Queens (electric castle live) : she's the lead singer, she has two backing vocalists and the three voices make wonders
- Anneke van Giersbergen & Árstíðir - Pavane van Fauré : another collab, I'm sure you know the Gabriel Fauré song
- Anneke Van Giersbergen - When I am laid in earth (subtitulos español) : yes she loves classical music
Her voice is mesmerizing. You'll love it, I promise.
Anneke van Giersbergen & Mike Boddé - When I am Laid in Earth - Purcell | Podium Witteman
=> might be a better version of the Purcell classic (better quality)
Whoah, this looks like such an awesome list. Thank you!
Anneke and Danny Cavanagh - "Untouchable pt 2"
Anneke Van Giersbergen - "The Blower's Daughter - live"
Anneke was also the female voice in the background of "Kingdom".
How can you have a list of Anneke and not include anything from her work with The Gathering? It put her on the map in the first place!
I love how excited you look and how much you enjoy disecting Devin's voice throughout the song
Devin is one of a kind! He can devour your soul with his screams and sing you to sleep
I love that "Deer in the headlights" look that so many people get when they hear this song for the first time.
Devy is a LOT of fun to watch. The Charismatic Voice watching Devy is even MORE fun to watch!!
Hahah
Totally not surprised you picked Failure. lol ;)
Simone was in the Epica feat. Floor Jansen - Sancta Terra she really liked.
The fact that Aryeon has both the Jansen sisters, Anneke, and Simone does make it something of a fait accompli that we'll get there.
Yes, the road is leading there. Don't forget about Simone and Marko. Devin would be the fourth Ayreon collaborator so far! 🤘
@@rog2224 he has such a great ear for talent, and loads of talent himself, obviously. 🤘
"One thats more operatic and one that's more scary"
Yeah. Basically that.
Perfect woman. And of course this man Devin , has helped me through a lot of my problems , and as a guitarist myself , has helped me express myself , these pair will always have a place in my heart x .
No one, absolutely no one can scream and sing at the same time like Devin, period. A true artist.
I love whenever someone hears Devin for the first time. Nobody’s the same afterwards. He’s just the best.
Arjen Anthony Lucassen gave him leave to write and record his vocal parts for The Human Equation. He got multi-tracked walls of sound for the character Rage. That flipped my coin like never.
Thank you for the wisdom shared, it's astounding to me.
"I wish I could see more of his throat 😫😆" I love it.
I bet broadway musical producers would be salivating to get him in a production, with all those different qualities and the vocal power.
The vocals are minimal… Do you even know what the heck you’re talking about?
Considering the vocal coaches that have their mouth wide open and their jaws dropped, and then say that he’s a classically trained on his top though it’s… You couldn’t be more wrong and you obviously haven’t seen a reaction video to this performance before.
That was supposed to say “he sounds classically trained” on his top notes. I know that he is self taught . But that makes this performance even more incredible.
@@Rosannasfriend It's an almost 8 minute song with like 3-4min of vocals. I'm not talking quality of vocals, I'm talking about the percentage of the song that has them.
the amount of vocals is irrelevant when he can rip your heart out with a few lines. what he does with those 3 verses is incredible and well worth diving into
