I was going to say the exact same thing. I imagine my eyes were just that wide the first time I heard 'Deadhead'. He really shines in this EMG video. I don't have any hesitation in saying I personally think he has the best, most powerful voice in modern music, dating back to the 60's. I used to think Chris Cornell and Ian Thornley had a voice until I heard Devin Townsend. He has no equal in my mind.

YES on learning more about Devin. He's such a treasure and so so talented... and a heart of gold. He's done a lot for his public throughout the pandemic, free live stream concerts, podcasts, streaming sessions where he shows how he produces and mixes his music, he held charity events to raise money for healthcare workers. Not only is he a wonderful singer and composer, he is a wonderful human being. He's very versatile as well, one day he releases an ambient album, a country/Americana one the next, electronic, pop, progressive rock, extreme metal - he does it all. Since you're a vocal coach, Higher at Plovdiv might be nice, or Why the Quarantine Concert version, Bring him Home in Auckland, Death of Music at Royal Albert Hall. Beware for Deadhead at RAH - it has a tendency to get blocked, you might need to blur the video.

Hello Bethany, lovely to meet you! I too make reaction videos, but just about the emotional impact of the music rather than trying to be too academic about it. When I started about 4.5 years ago, I worked through a lot of Devin Townsend material, and I would most definitely call myself a fan, having acquired vinyl, CD, DVD and Blu-ray of everything he’s ever done. There are literally like 25 albums to explore, live records, concert DVDs and loads of UA-cam stuff. I know comments below a video can be somewhat overwhelming (from experience) so there’s no need to respond or answer this.
To continue your Devin journey, you’ll soon discover that he is one of the most authentic vulnerable artists out there, and everything he writes is as an emotional response to the world around him and how he makes sense of it. It often resonates with the listener who is looking for a barometer and explanation for their own reaction to the world.
With this in mind, there is no Devin period that repeats, so from the early days of Strapping Young Lad and the angry extreme industrial metal that SYL made to Ghost, a stripped back chilled Enya-esque record, to the bonkers but brilliant chaos of Deconstruction, to the shiny effervescent poppiness of Epicloud, to a pre-pandemic Empath there is nothing that’s wrong to explore. However, for what it’s worth, here’s where I’d go next! (These are mostly live and easy to find on UA-cam)
Deep Peace - from Live at Plovdiv
Deadhead - live at Royal Albert Hall
The Death Of Music - Live at the Royal Albert Hall
Coast- live from By A Thread concerts
Grace - live from The Retinal Circus
Detox - live at The Retinal Circus
Why? - live from his studio quarantine online concert
    Genesis - live at Roundhouse
    1. Numbered 2. Awake 3.Pixillated - all live at the By A Thread concerts
    Higher - live at Plovdiv
Mountain Top - with Che Aimee Dorvil - live Dunlop sessions
You know, there’s so much to unpack and to enjoy, take your time and enjoy the journey. Not everything will work for you, but the majority should connect! Have fun!
    Jim

always love watching vocal coaches and teachers react to Devy for the first time and its usually this very video too. Fun fact is Devin never really had proper training, he went to a vocal coach, and he was told his singing was gonna damage his vocals and he pretty much said "nah fuck that" and with as he put it "sheer will power" just forces his vocals. In his early years when he was fronting his band Strapping Young Lad, he was more death metal vocal strong with his solo stuff being more a mix but now he focuses so much more on his range and what he can do. I hope he doesn't ruin his voice though because he has a fantastic range and voice.

Oh when Devin sang that first line your face was a picture! He is the most amazing vocalist I have heard, a humble man who takes the mick out of himself, but once he starts singing he has everyone totally entranced. Yes ‘Why’ from his quarantine charity shows he did from his basement at home is just brilliant, also check out his collaborations with Anneke Van Giersbergen, Ih Ah stings to mind, and Che Aimee Dorval where you’ll hear a softer side of Devin’s amazing voice. Loved your reaction.❤

I'm sure someone else has suggested it, but you gotta see him play Deadhead live at Royal Albert Hall. It's a treat. Also, for a metal vocal coach: Mary Z.

Really fun to watch. Really fun. Hitting the nails on their respective heads...
Effortless transition between virtuosic deliveries, is Devy's signature style.
Watching someone experience Devy for the first time, especially someone who knows what the f*ck is going on, is the best... just... the best...

His performance at the Royal Albert Hall is legendary, he performs a full metal opera thing, Ziltoid 2, and then he performs a full encore concert and the whole thing is like 3 hours nonstop and he's in peak performance the whole time, and he also had a cold or something at the time too

Bethany, oh sweet soul! I've only come across your channel and videos recently, December 13, 2022, (subscribed as of today.) Devin Townsend is an absolute beast. I've followed his career since the early days and his music, (and development as an entertainer), means a great deal to me. Enough said on that.
I love watching people respond to exceptional talent, but the authentic joy and wonder of discovery on your face literally speaks to my soul. I have so much respect for impassioned teachers, and I can only imagine the asset your open minded and open hearted personality is to their musical journeys. I'll be binging your vids tonight. This is exactly what I needed to see today. Have an awesome new year.

Thank you for this, such a wonderful reaction. Devy is an incredible musician and vocalist. I agree with the recommendation of "Why" and "Deadhead". The quarantine version of " Why" would probably be better, because of the camera being much closer, but definitely check out the Order of Magnitude version afterwards, it's very entertaining. On "Deadhead", as others have said he was battling a cold, but it's also later in the program, after he had performed an entire album, and a few more as well.

08:12 it helps you "pitch" your screams, thinning it out especially helps with hitting higher notes while either screaming or singing with a lot of grit the way Devin does.
