Some more info on Marko, this is after he had a botched surgery that messed up is voice and vocal chords, he had to completely relearn to sing and what not
I agree. I recently bought the Century Child album that has this song on it. Beforehand, I'd only ever heard the live version of this song. I was disappointed in the studio version. Something was lacking in the back and forth between them and the ending was lackluster as compared to the climactic, absolutely amazing ending in the live version (which is my favorite part).
He's amazing for it. I love Jonathan Young's take on it too. He does have that perfect "villain" voice, and he took it to a whole new level when he did Phantom of the Opera.
@@raeyth_ The problem is the voice being perfect. The Phantom is broken, damaged, his voice should show that. Perfectly trained beautiful voice does not fit the character. Broken grunty voice, on the way other hand, fits like a glove
Tarja is a trained classical singer, and that is one of the biggest reason Nightwish was even born back in the day. They made the band around that kind of sound. Later they changed their style a bit, especially after Tarja left. I miss her :)
She defined not just Nightwish the band but the entire freaking genre. Yeah, Nightwish has ended for me then, never could get into any of their stuff after that - magic was well and truly gone :-) Still listen to old albums with Tarja though
@@angelbedolla347 Yup same here. I absolutely love Floor but when Tarja left the group lost that feeling of magic and power, and still it didn't sound like other power metal bands where they sound too "gamey" or like too much fantasy. Old nightwish was its own genre.
Tarja is one of the reasons why Nightwish got soooo popular, because metlal with operatic singing had never been done before and Tarja was just amazing, I saw theyir end of an era tour and my mouth was open when I heard Tarja singing "wishmaster" ut Floor is also EQUALLY good, but Floor didnt want to copy tTarja, Tarja is opera singer but Floor has just different style of singing but both ladies are just amazing
She didn't had a Floorgasm or a Tarjagasm. She had a Marcogasm. Thank you that you noticed his singing talent. The most reactions are only about Floor's or Tarja's voice.
In my opinion this is the most genuine version of this song. Their voices and styles are so contrary that they reflect the contrarity of christine and the phantom more than I heard it anywhere else, yet so harmonizing and powerful. Also Marco's melody-line is different than others do it. Most go down when they sing together, while he goes up the first time. This adds more emotion to it. I love Floor and she nails every song by her versatile skills. Especially Ghost Love Score has come to a new level. But there are some songs, that need this contrast of this continous operatic style that Tarja sings.
@@WABP860 probably you're referring to a specific performance, cause it's not as obvious to me yet as you might think. First of all: it's not about the female part alone. So this is not about who is the better singer. The versions I heard with Sierra so far were not that special... She sings great, then he sings great, then they sing together... "great" of course.... And the music plays on..... But there is no tension... No connection between the intonation of the sung melody and the meaning of it's words. Especially in the beginning. Sierra sings the line beautifully of course... But not genuinely as she would mean it. I don't believe her that "the phantom of the opera is here.... Inside my mind". And even if it was in Sierra's mind: it doesn't seem to bother her. Just by the way she sings it Tarja also shows that she isn't comfortable with him haunting her mind. Sierra is a great singer without a doubt, but that is not what I was referring to. A big part have also the male voice and the music, which are simply boring in most common performances.
Yesss, Marko absolutely slays! He's the best version of the Phantom without doubt for me. I'm so sad that he left Nightwish... The band has endured the change of the main female singer twice but Marko is irreplaceable.
Idk if you know but they recently performed this track together for the first time in 18 years it’s amazing still and great to see them together but you can tell his vocals have deteriorated which is to be expected being a heavy metal singer and pushing 60. Still I strive to grow my beard out like his 😂 being a metal head I started growing out my hair in middle school and unfortunately started losing hair at 18 which I mitigate with special shampoo and rogaine which I also use on my beard which helps. I can’t wait until I’ll I can braid my beard. I accept I’ll lose most of my head hair eventually but atleast i have facial hair
In all fairness, Tuomas wanted Nightwish to play easy listening music, but because Tarja's voice is so dramatic (I LOVE Tarja's voice), they switched to symphonic metal. One more reason to love Tarja.
Marco is also the lead vocalist for a band called Tarot. Bonus: If you search for him you'll find a video of him singing to Nightwish's former dummers' baby, which is beautiful.
funny you should say that, i was listening to it at 2am and my neighbour loved it that much he threw a brick through my window so he could hear it better
I had the pleasure of watching Nightwish perform in a small venue (approx 200 people) in Seattle with Tarja. You are correct in stating that her projection is beyond impressive. From close to the stage you could hear her voice over the PA. It was a very memorable experience.
Wow, that must have been amazing! I think Floor is completely amazing, but so was Tarja. Nightwish would not be where they are today, if it hadn't been for Tarja.
And savatage "Streets- a rock opera", not to mention TSO, king diamond, blind guardians "night in middle earth", Haggard (only likes the one with Galilleo) and so many others...
They were a miracle. That Nightwish Era did what 99.99% of people couldn't imagine - opera and metal together in a magical, inspirational and pure joyful way. I still loved Nightwish after, and it's great with Floor especially, but those years were a music phenomenon.
Opera and metal together dates back basically to the start of metal after all there’s a lot of inspiration from opera within a lot of the early metal bands
Tarja was trained to be a Soprano singer. She went to the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki where she learn classical and opera music. Some of the alumni are the original members of Apocalyptica, the lead guitarist of Stratovarius and the bassist of HIM.
Definitely head voice for Marco, he lost his falsetto register after surgery back in the 90's. I love the fact that, from all the vocal coach reaction videos, you are the only one noticing his insane range and vocal skills! Love your videos!
Probably because she's the one with the most experiencie and knowledge. Her knowledge about music in general is amazing. I learned so many things with her...
@@AllanRoberto2711 damn, wish I could take lessons with her, but I’m nowhere near set up for or comfortable with doing things remote/online (also my spoken English is so much worse than my written English)…
Early on, when Nightwish was promoting themselves via a demo tape, the person who originally signed them to a contract said something like this: My god, what music, what singing; and they don't have to gargle nails while they do it.
I'm so glad you focused on Marco. The dude has such a great and powerful voice and gets overlooked often due to the amazing women vocalists he's surrounded with all the time.
Marco is such a beast. He has such and interesting and distinct voice that you don't think would work alongside a female voice but he can make it work with everyone he sings with. It's quite remarkable.
10:45 Love it when Elizabeth pulls her hands away from the keyboard when Marco screams: "ALLRIGHT !". As if she's scared he's gonna bite her finger off
The whole atmosphere here is just amazing. Yes Tarja is doing her thing & fantastically...But for me, Marko steals the show & takes the heat to another level. He's a natural born entertainer, in every sense. Beautiful reaction and brilliant analysis as always lass:)
she;s the reason i listened to them. but to be fair lately i watched a video with floor of the song the greatest show on earth.....and i really enjoyed that as well.
I can never adjust to Tarja’s sound, as a Dutchie who is more aware of both later nightwish and Floor’s previous bands. That said I can acknowledge how impressive Tarja is. Technically she’s obviously one of the best, her sound is just not my thing. What I’ve noticed (since you’d probably be wondering why I’m in the comment section of a ‘Tarja’ song) is that Marco is the one that gets the most ‘wtf’ response when it comes to this performance. Yes Tarja is a great (technically very impressive) singer (and I give her props, she’s just my not gig), but Marco steals the show here. So who wins in a poll of all of Nightwish’s singers? I guess it’s Marco ;) That (jokingly) said, all infighting is not very productive. Preference is preference and it’s does not have to take away from capabilities of singers and artists in the genre
@@Shireen1986 yeah, I think because I originally listened to the band with Tarja.. pretty common with other bands and vocalists... people don't like change.
I like Floor, she is a great, she sings with different voices during the songs which is cool and bautiful cause u never know what she is going to do...but i prefer Tarja too she is the heart of nightwish, Tarja is the angel that sings its stories while Tuomas is the poet that writes the story... Tarja is sometimes an angel, a ghost, a mistress, a banshee, a siren, a messenger... she gives the band the haunting atmosphere, melodical operatic singing is what made me love this band... the best of both worlds, epic and haunting, sad and beautiful... Tarja is the best by far, miss her too...
I have never seen Nightwish in concert with Floor. However, I did get to see Nightwish on their first U.S. tour in 2005. So yes, the first time I saw them Tarja was the singer and let me tell you...she tore the roof off. One of the best concerts I ever went to.
Agreed. I caught them on the Wishmaster tour in 2000 in Montreal on back to back nights (I think it was around Thanksgiving). "Blew the roof off the place" was the only way to describe it 🤘🤘
I saw them twice in Germany 2003, and twice in Melbourne (around 2005 I think?) and once in Sydney (same year). Five times, and Tarja never missed a note. Every moment was captivating every time.
Marko and Tarja my favourite Phantom and Christina duo. Andrew Lloyd Webber said they are his favourite non stage version. Both of them classically trained. Turning it to metal was something that Tarja either created or helped create in the earliest years of the oughts.
I respect that opinion and I was like that for a bit right when she left, but "While your lips are still red" sung predominantly by Marko made me change my mind. Nightwish, more than the members themselves, are the energy they create. The sounds and feelings that they seek to generate with performances make the essence of the group. Sort of how many ingredients can make a cake
@@hansolo2121 OK so I'll give new Nightwish a go. TBF I've barely listened, I guess I didn't give Floor a fair shot. However, in my defence, while Tarja is limited, I really liked her for what she was.
Tarja voice sparks the fame for nightwish. In other words, her voice start it all. Floor just receive the baton from annete, which annete received from tarja. I love oceanborn.
@@akidazami I agree that Tarja's voice really started it all and that her voice and the band's music put Nightwish on the map. Anette received the baton from Tarja, she was a fine vocalist... but ultimately not the one for Nightwish. Here's where I respectfully disagree, Floor Jansen is currently the perfect singer for Nightwish. She isn't as operatic as Tarja, but she is just as skilled and way more versatile. I love her voice and she's an amazing vocalist. Both Floor and Tarja are perfect for Nightwish.
This version is the BEST and ONLY live performance that I LOVE way more than the recorded version. This performance gives me goodbumps every time I hear it.
Watching her it's like watching a child discovering a new toy, she's having so mucho fun, I loved it!!!!!!... I like how you analyze them, here's your like good lady
I love both Tarja and Floor. I don’t really like how everyone seems to be all about Floor and have forgotten about Tarja- because it was she who made Nightwish the popular band they are. And she has an amazing voice with so much depth and colour. It’s quite a dark colour, which is lovely and goes with metal well. I’d say that she’s not as versatile as Floor, ad Floor often plays up the contrast between the lightness of her voice and the music, which works wonderfully. Of course, Floor doesn’t have the sheer power of Tarja. So basically, two very lovely leading ladies, with very different, but both wonderful voices. I love them equally.
I've never gotten into Tarja-era Nightwish, and I mostly blame Tarja. It always felt to me like she only has "full drama opera" mode, while I like some variation. And her timing always felt like she is too much behind the beat most of the time.
@@pvdaele Full drama opera mode aside i feel Tuomas matched the compositions to her voice extremely well and because of that their older music seemed to have much more power behind it.
@@goatie8405 Even if the composition helped bringing out her strengths, my regret is that there was not enough variation in register for my taste. I like being taken in directions that I I didn't expect at first. And Tarja just didn't do that.
"Floor doesn't have the sheer power of Tarja" excuse me? What the hell did you just say??? Floor definitely has a more powerful voice than Tarja. Tarja wishes she could belt as high and powerful as Floor.
The growl Marco adds to his role is very much in character... He is the monster in her mind after all, a little growl adds flavor to this song and fits really well to the overall feel of the piece. Marco is incredible and "Islander" live at Tampere would showcase him more...
Nightwish is from Kitee Finland. Formed in 1996. (She was saying kittos to the crowd. Thank you in Finnish. A small village on the lake shore near the Eastern border with Russia. Tuomas, Emppu and Tarja formed the band. Jakku and Sammi ( ex bassist) joined later. Tuomas is a year older then Tarja. His mother was Tarja's teacher. Heck she was the only piano teacher in the village. The two knew each other in Highschool. Marko has classical training himself and sang with his brothers in a band called Taro before Nightwish (2001 -2021). The idea was for a folk rock band. But Tarja's powerful voice moved him to pursue metal. Finland loves metal. They produced 5 albums up to ONCE in 2004. With Tarja as lead singer. This footage was fimed for the DVD. It was ONCE that shot them to world wide fame. It was filmed the last night of the ONCE upon a Tour. Hartwell Arena, Helsinki Finland. 11, 500 in attendance. October 21, 2005. It turned out to be her last night with the band. In fact she was singing through a head cold & throat infection that kept her from singing at the sound check. The concert was epic. She has 5 costumes that night. That one was the first. The red one next. The black with shoulder straps and a yellow skirt. The gown for sleeping sun, and a flowing White number for the end of the night. Something I am sure you'll appreciate as to the time and effort. And colour matching her microphone to the outfits is her signature. There was a festival (Flatlanders) filmed in The Netherlands (August 2005) where she was not sick, but being open air you don't get the costumes or effects. Anyway after her dismissal in a way everyone now regrets and has apologized to her for, this became known as End of an Era. They have buried the hatchet. They are on talking terms now. Just this year Tarja re recorded Dark Chest of Wonders for Crewwish. The crew behind the band who put on a show with the equipment and it was arranged in both senses by Tuomas. A reunion is not imminent but hey 2025 would be the anniversarry and a limited tour with Tarja & Marko as guests would sell like gang busters. Marko reached out to Tarja first and sang with her at a Christmas concert where they were guests in 2012. Hugging and crying backstage were reported. And after her version in Finnish of Ave Maria they were hugging on stage. Marko keeping his hand on her shoulder. Since that time he was a guest on stage at a German festival. The band has married, lost parents etc and they have made peace as I said. Tarja and Floor were friends whilst Tarja was still in Nightwish. That hasn't changed. Floor got her blessing to join Nightwish after Anette had to leave tour as she went into labour over Christmas in the USA. Floor brought in as a temp but is now a full member. No impediments but time and will to a reunion. Tarja went solo in 2007. She now has 9 albums, 6 specials, 3 DVDs, a side project called Outlanders ( electronic music) with world famous musicians. A best.of:Living the Dream dropped a month ago. Dec, 02, 22. So much music to discover. But to see what she can really do with a high note. 2016, Woodstock Poland ( no relation) and a cover of Muse, Supremacy. It will knock your socks off. She has only grown in the last 17 years. Happy New Year
You may not believe me but my grandmother used to live in Kitee and actually knows Tuomas' mother. They are still friends. I think she has seen Tuomas also. It's so crazy to think that I have some kind of connection to this legendary band who is arguably the most globally known Finnish band ever. Kiitos for reading :D
Thanks for the wonderful back-stories. While I have given some of these back-stories in other comments in other places, yours are much better, and all in one place. Thanks, again!
"..... but Marco!!!" Yeah. Exactly! WHILE playing the bass AND looking badass and awesome! Damnit he's so good! I get the chills everytime I hear this performance and you really reacted so wonderful. (I found Nightwish via Floor and for me that's special. But I do really love the Tarja era too, you don't have to put one in front of the other - they're both awesome in their different ways to sing and act)
You must know that Tuomas+Emppu+Tarja founded Nightwish. Up to this very concert they took all steps from a school band up to global leader of this genre. They created practically the whole concept already when doing this. Later came the substitutes for some of the members in this foundation line-up. This is just the best live of this song.
For more Marco singing I would recommend the "Islander" from the 2015 Tampere open Air Concert, or Nightwish cover of Pink Floyds "High Hopes" from the same concert as this was taken from (the End of an Era DVD 2005).
You get lots of props for telling the truth about the difference between the two singers. Floor and Tarja, while giving respect to both. I'll leave it at that.
Also Waltari did "Yeah Yeah, Die Die" back on 1996, that you could call a metal musical. Another act they created for the opera, was "Evankeliumi" in -99. I'm not sure, is it available in any format, really do hope to find it some day. 'cos it was worth every penny, and then some
I love your face when you hear Marco!!!! That's what we're all REALLY here for! Tarja kills it, but Marco MAKES it!!! Marco totally gave you the stank face!!!
To watch this whole concert dvd is amazing, and the chemistry between the two singing is astounding, you would never know that they where feuding and could barely be in the same room together.
Wait, they were feuding? I just thought she was being like that to everybody. Huh...amazing. You could never tell they didn't get along here. Usually you can tell when band members can't stand each other.
@@Stinkydo0d That piece is from the tour called "end of an era" As the show closed down Tarja walked off stage and was given a letter firing here. They hired Anna to take her place, she had 3 days to learn the set list.
@@polletheskald Oh, yeah. I know that part. I just mean Tarja and Marko being at each other's throats. That's surprising to hear. Thankfully they made up before it's too late.
This performance is sooo wild, and that is why I love it. It makes me laugh. Marko especially goes crazy. It is very interesting to see Elizabeth's reaction to this. She has told she loves mixing genres, so I'm hopeful she is going to like this performance.
Elizabeth! I'm hoping you would react to Nightwish "Islander", Tampere 2015, because Marko is using his mellow, clear, soft tones. And his interaction with the audience is so nice to watch. With a twist of humor. The song is composed by Marko himself. Tuomas had heard him playing and singing it in a dressing room, and Tuomas wanted it to be a Nightwish song, and he wanted to write new lyrics to it, and he did. For once a simple story from Tuomas, no need to read between the lines. And those are Tuomas' words, not mine. By the way, I learned from some Nightwish fans that at some point Marko went thru a throat surgery, but it didn't go as planned. So he had to work hard to try and restore his voice again.
I love the live version of The Islander as it's great to watch him interact with the crowd but I feel the music video offers a deeper insight into the story that it is telling and makes it more powerful than just the live performance.
One of the best comments I have ever seen from an Islander reaction is that Marko should get a T-shirt that says "i am so good, Floor Jansen is my back-up singer!"
@@aku313rl I was wondering when it happened, I thought it must have been a long time ago. If it was in 1999, that was before Marko joined Nightwish in 2001. Kiva kun kerroit!
There is a reason why both Tarja and Floor sound so good when singing with marco, he is very talented and really does wonders with harmonizing with different vocalists. Love him :D
Marco pretty much is the reason I was sold on Nightwish back in 2005. I heard him sing on I wish I had an angel and at first was so surprised by his voice it literally made me laugh out loud, but then it drew me in.
Marko definitely makes a great phantom. He has a certain savagery that I always imagine the phantom having. Like I never thought the phantom should sound beautiful. He is a monstrous character that is redeemed in the end.
@@jovetj I always loved that part though because to me it really displays his immaturity and complete lack of empathy until he finally finds his humanity at the end.
Had he sounded like this then Christine would never have mistaken him for an angel in the first place. His voice was so beautiful that she thought she had been visited by an actual angel.
Re: Metal Musicals - the closest thing to that I can think of would be Arjen Lucassen's Ayreon project. Arjen composes these concept albums with a story, and then invites various singers from the rock/metal industry to sing the different roles & characters on the albums. Floor and Marco have each participated in some of these albums, as well as Floor's sister Irene. It's largely been a studio-only effort as it can be difficult to coordinate live shows with so many different singers being involved (each with their own bands schedules), but they have been able to put together a few live performances. A few suggestions available on youtube: Everybody Dies from the Ayreon Universe live performance, Garden of Emotions from the Electric Castle live performance, and The Day That The World Breaks Down from The Source album (not live, but a great music video with a bunch of great singers)
That vocal contrast in metal is often called "Beauty and the Beast", there's a lot of 90's gothic metal bands that did that. The Gathering (Anneke van Giersbergen), Theatre of Tragedy (Liv Kristine), Lacuna Coil (Cristina Scabbia ), etc.
Marco has always been the hidden talent of nightwish to me, his voice is just sooo good, and he's even playing alongside it! And besides that he's just a really nice and interessing person outside nightwish, despite what you might expect based on his looks

Why did she leave?
Come for Tarja, but impressed by Marco.
It's marko with K you idiot
Sorry i know
Did you just talk to yourself?
Shut up
Marco was actually the one who touched me more
Tarja is one of the reasons why Nightwish got soooo popular, because metlal with operatic singing had never been done before and Tarja was just amazing, I saw theyir end of an era tour and my mouth was open when I heard Tarja singing "wishmaster" ut Floor is also EQUALLY good, but Floor didnt want to copy tTarja, Tarja is opera singer but Floor has just different style of singing but both ladies are just amazing
you should listen to tristania but just the 1st 3 albums
And therion?
Therion Haggard? If you ask me Nightwish is like sellout Metallica...
The floor is not EQUALLY good at all !!!! Can Floor sing soprano??? No, she can not. Period!
@@AtillaMayhem So how is Nightwish "sellout"?
"But Marco" my favorite phrase during this video.
Gotta love people appreciating him and his voice because he truly kills it
You think he compares to Devin Townsend?
I dont think its considered the fact Marco is not only an incredible vocalist, but he's also playing bass at the same time. Simply mind blowing!
Especially the part where he sings "but it's me they'll hear" and just casually points at the crowd while still managing to play the bass perfectly
She didn't had a Floorgasm or a Tarjagasm. She had a Marcogasm.
Thank you that you noticed his singing talent. The most reactions are only about Floor's or Tarja's voice.
I've watched this performance so many times and i still get goosebumps every time they sing together
My new hobby is collecting these reaction videos just so I have an excuse for listening to this again and again.
Haha samesies
In my opinion this is the most genuine version of this song. Their voices and styles are so contrary that they reflect the contrarity of christine and the phantom more than I heard it anywhere else, yet so harmonizing and powerful. Also Marco's melody-line is different than others do it. Most go down when they sing together, while he goes up the first time. This adds more emotion to it. I love Floor and she nails every song by her versatile skills. Especially Ghost Love Score has come to a new level. But there are some songs, that need this contrast of this continous operatic style that Tarja sings.
I’d pay big money to see the whole play in this kind of arrangement and with Tarja and Marco.
You obviously never heard Sierra Bogges
@@Ronaldomartinsapc I think you can safely spend that money elsewhere. To paraphrase Taylor Swift: "They are never ever, ever getting back together!".
Taylor Swift can not even be the nail of Tarja 😂
Yesss, Marko absolutely slays! He's the best version of the Phantom without doubt for me. I'm so sad that he left Nightwish... The band has endured the change of the main female singer twice but Marko is irreplaceable.
He did feel core and I do miss him but I wish him the best to
His single stuff is great and he still tours, so that’s good
Idk if you know but they recently performed this track together for the first time in 18 years it’s amazing still and great to see them together but you can tell his vocals have deteriorated which is to be expected being a heavy metal singer and pushing 60. Still I strive to grow my beard out like his 😂 being a metal head I started growing out my hair in middle school and unfortunately started losing hair at 18 which I mitigate with special shampoo and rogaine which I also use on my beard which helps.
You’re so luck 🍀
"Is there such thing as 'Metal Musical'?"
Yes, kinda. It's called Symphonic Metal. Nightwish is pretty much the most iconic band of this genre.
There is also Avantasia's first album "The Metal Opera", though singing not quite operatic, whole album is made like opera.

I love how everyone comes to the phantom for Tarja (who is amazing), but gets dazzled by Marco, who totally owns this song... God I love Marco!!
Marko is just great, i like his work at Tarot, they are the true godfathers of the Finnish metal.
Tarja is one of the main reasons why Nightwish became popular, because of his operatic singing. Love it!
Early on, when Nightwish was promoting themselves via a demo tape, the person who originally signed them to a contract said something like this:
My god, what music, what singing; and they don't have to gargle nails while they do it.
I'm so glad you focused on Marco. The dude has such a great and powerful voice and gets overlooked often due to the amazing women vocalists he's surrounded with all the time.
I'm starting to think that everyone who recommends this version to voice coaches, just want to hear what they will say about Marco. 😄😄
I clicked for that reason
She is a sold Marko fangirl and it makes me so happy.
I'm here for that actually 🤣
Marco is such a beast. He has such and interesting and distinct voice that you don't think would work alongside a female voice but he can make it work with everyone he sings with. It's quite remarkable.
10:45 Love it when Elizabeth pulls her hands away from the keyboard when Marco screams: "ALLRIGHT !". As if she's scared he's gonna bite her finger off
Who is that?
The whole atmosphere here is just amazing. Yes Tarja is doing her thing & fantastically...But for me, Marko steals the show & takes the heat to another level. He's a natural born entertainer, in every sense. Beautiful reaction and brilliant analysis as always lass:)
you mean he tried to steal the show with his caterwalling
Man, i miss tarja in nightwish, still even after 15 years!!!
she;s the reason i listened to them.
but to be fair lately i watched a video with floor of the song the greatest show on earth.....and i really enjoyed that as well.
Tarja all the way! Not a slight to Floor at all. she is a very talented singer.... just Tarja..... all the way.
I guess it’s Marco ;)
That (jokingly) said, all infighting is not very productive.
"Blew the roof off the place" was the only way to describe it 🤘🤘
I think they toured US in 2002 or even earlier?
I saw them twice in Germany 2003, and twice in Melbourne (around 2005 I think?) and once in Sydney (same year).
Five times, and Tarja never missed a note. Every moment was captivating every time.
Nightwish’s Phantom of the Opera is the best version of that song.

Marko and Tarja my favourite Phantom and Christina duo. Andrew Lloyd Webber said they are his favourite non stage version. Both of them classically trained. Turning it to metal was something that Tarja either created or helped create in the earliest years of the oughts.
I'm loving this Elizabeth, it's very refreshing to see a master with empathy at work. Love you girl..
For me, Nightwish is Tarja. Once is an untouchable album for Nightwish. She is whom I heard first and I will always listen to.
I respect that opinion and I was like that for a bit right when she left, but "While your lips are still red" sung predominantly by Marko made me change my mind. Nightwish, more than the members themselves, are the energy they create. The sounds and feelings that they seek to generate with performances make the essence of the group.
I love them equally.
actually, Floor does not show her much better potential on most Tarja-era songs ... and Tarja is Tarja..what can one say
The gown for sleeping sun, and a flowing
White number for the end of the night.
Love it all, but your reaction at 10:46 to the final "all right!" is absolutely, totally priceless.

Ohh you should also have a listen to Tobias Sammet's Avantasia: The Metal Opera; if you do like the metal musical/opera thing
Completely agree, i would add to that a Listen To Avantasia
Star One - Into the Black Hole (Live performance with Damian Wilson, Floor & Irene Jansen)
don't forget Ayreon - Valley Of The Queens (Ayreon Universe)
@@lalystar4230 was going to write this, xDD
Tarja in "Walking in the Air" shows clearly your voice and your cspacity for classic singing.
That vocal contrast in metal is often called "Beauty and the Beast", there's a lot of 90's gothic metal bands that did that. The Gathering (Anneke van Giersbergen), Theatre of Tragedy (Liv Kristine), Lacuna Coil (Cristina Scabbia
), etc.
Tristania? :)
ToT started beauty and the beast. 90's had a great beauty and the beast metal.
Semblant.
I met Lacuna Coil doing security work.I have a camel cigarette I bummed off Marco in a display case. It's a camel blue.
My Dying Bride did this well with Aaron's voice alone in the early 90s. Opeth was another a little later on.
Marko Hietala has a solo album, Pyre of the Black Heart, released in May 2019
Marco has a band called Tarot, which started in 1982 I think.
It is SOOOOOO good!
which is amazing by the way
Marco has always been the hidden talent of nightwish to me, his voice is just sooo good, and he's even playing alongside it! And besides that he's just a really nice and interessing person outside nightwish, despite what you might expect based on his looks
This arrangement and intensity is evil genius....!!
Your excited chuckle is pretty much the cutest, most adorable thing I've ever seen. I love your obvious enthusiasm and passion, and your expert analysis is fascinating to hear
As many reaction as I've seen from vocal coaches to Nightwish, they are always pleasantly surprised, when they hear Marco for the first time. He's like an uncut gem for them.
live, playing bass and sing like this, Marko is quite impressive, isn´t he. plus he is such a humorous, wise and dearable person. great reaction, elisabeth. thank you and stay safe and well.
Love to rewatch your old videos :D
Actually I start Nightwish and Opeth listening because of your videos :D
THANK YOU ❤
So I had the same first reactions :D
Honestly the vocal dynamic between Tarja and Marco is why I fell in love with Nightwish.
Same here. Now that they are both gone from the band, Nightwish just won't sound like Nightwish to me.
Marco wasn't in Nightwish to begin with.
@@danwhitehousepc That's why I didn't say "I loved Marco from the bands first album," I specified that he was in it when *I* fell in love with the band. The first songs I heard from them were from Wish, which was after Marco had joined the band. Thanks.
@@JustSomeDamnGinger 👌
I can't listen to anyone else play the Phantom, beside Marko.
He is soooo good.
this is the best and only version about this song. tarja and marko forever.
Escuchen a Tilo Wolf de lacrimosa 100000000000 veces mejor que marco
What's your take on Floor and Henk?
@@promethbastard My take is that both are amazing vocalists, but the actual tone of the song was...uh...television-friendly?
@@promethbastard Not enough grit on the Phantom.
He is the Phantom you can send nuns to listen to.
If I'm not mistaken, there is a video out there of Tarja and Floor singing Over The Hills and Far Away together.
"But Marco--" 🤣 Exactly. 🖤
Yeah there is. There's interactions between them with Floor telling the techs to turn her mic down and Tarja telling them to turn it up XD
Yes from Metal Female Voices fest in Wieze (Belguim) . I was there!
@@shannenmartele5131 Right, there are several versions up from different angles with different sound quality. However this one is pretty decent, even it was recorded from the audience:
ua-cam.com/video/57WsNYItbSU/v-deo.html
@@mangalover0149 this is incredibly silly and incorrect. They wanted the return audio up and down, as in, the sound in their ears, because they couldn't hear each other. Duh.
Tarja Turunen (and Nightwish during her time) forever! Loved this analysis.
This is my favorite version of the phantom. I love the rasp that Marko puts on his lines. Tarja is good, but I am always blown away at Marko's performance here.
7:29, this was the first video I actually ever saw of Nightwish. And that part there that you keep coming back to, where Marco is singing high, is what sold me on his chops. I went into every other nightwish video, including the ones with floor, looking forward to hearing more Marco. He still doesn't get enough credit as an extraordinary vocalist.
I'm with you 100%!❤
Me too. Got introduced back in 2005 and this video got me into metal.
Well Marco is doing his own band stuff so if you want to just hear Marco sing there is options for those more than just Nightwish songs.
Unfortunately Marco has lost his falsetto after a botched operation for polyps on his vocal chord. He has compensated and sings perfectly other than his falsetto. An example of his current range can be heard on his song Islander live at Tampere.
Elizabeth--Just watched your performance---Elizabeth Zharoff- Martern aller arten---OMG sweat pouring off your head and chest----what a performance. I have watched several of your critiques of others performances and I was mesmerized by your analysis, professionalism and I have to admit your beauty, You are an incredibly talented person and have a magnetic personality. Keep being you. There must be millions of amazed people like me that admire you. Please keep doing what you are doing! Thank you for your professionalism!
Marko sings tribute to Pink Floyd "High Hopes" - from same show.
Epic performance
I could watch this lady all night she's gorgeous and her love and appreciation for music is infectious :D
Love the reaction and analysis! While you are on this symph metal kick, you HAVE to react to "Epica - Sancta Terra (feat Floor Jansen) Live Retrospect show". Two powerhouse women with a live orchestra & choir behind the band. It's magnificent!
Definitely man, this version is amazing!
@@geescar Absolutely YES!
I was 14 when I went for the first time on a gig, it was Nightwish with Tarja. I can't forget it even if I tried. Kiitos for all your videos and analysis!
I advise you to listen "Ever Dream"(live) they singing together.
Ever Dream (live End of an Era)
@@davidviteris Ever Dream (Wacken 2013)
both, actually
@@ranger7544 There's one reason why I prefer the End of an Era version over the Wacken one: the last chorus sung as a duet.
@@ibriselric2 Wacken 2013 is the way NW always wanted it done ,just saying
If you love Tarja on this you will love her singing Sleeping Sun its absolutely amazing
The first version though. Idk wtf they did in the video when she was in the white dress, but it sounded like they took all the darkness from her voice.
That is the 1 song i give to her over Floor but it was written for her but yeah its her song by a smidge
And people never tell which Sleeping Sun from Tarja. You know she has two versions of it, the one recorded 1999 and the one in 2005, and they are very different. The original is more operatic with legato and vibrato. Personally I like the original better.
The earlier version of Sleeping Sun is definitely one of my top five favourite NW songs.
The original Sleeping Sun is my favourite Nightwish song. Just perfect
That giggle when Marko started singing. :-D
