    The flick hes doing with his picking hand (right hand) is actually an endurance break. Because of the speed and style of his music and the palm muting technique, his wrist takes a great level of strain, so the flicking of the wrist helps to keep it limber :)

He is one of the most personable, down-to-earth and self-effacing people in rock and does regular "hangout" livestreams on Twitch for his fans. He has done a series of livestream "Quarantine Concerts" during lockdown over the last year or so, some of which to raise funds for hospitals/NHS in Canada, the UK and USA.

  • @Arkryal
    @Arkryal Рік тому +1

    I'm really late to this party, but I like the comment about the facial expressions and gestures used to engage the audience. Metal shares a lot with opera and musical theater in that regard. If anyone has ever wondered "What the hell were they thinking" when looking at 70's-80's hair-metal bands, with the bright spandex suits, excessive makeup, etc... it's so you can be seen from the back of the house in live concerts. You weren't going to be projected on a 30 foot screen. The same reason stage actors wear tons of makeup.
    Bands like Kiss and Twisted Sister turned it into a persona for the band. Others would wear makeup live, but any time they were videoed, they wouldn't (or would wear film makeup that had less contrast), so a lot of time, you really couldn't even tell. But there's so much that goes into the production of those events beyond just the music. A friend of mine from way back became a make-up artist and she tours with tons of bands, and it's apparently a good paying gig, lol. Some people have an innate stage presence, like Devin here, but there's still a very conscious effort that is being negotiated while preforming.

    NOTICE how his "screams" are produced with his upper lip placed ON the mic. He's NOT at full volume, or anywhere close. My best theory is that he has superb breath support and throat control so that he can produce a raspberry-like effect through the false folds to restrict pressure and airflow this allowing his vocal folds to vibrate cleanly behind that distortion at th tip-top of his range. Just like a lip-roll warmup exercise except his throat is freeing his mouth to shape that beautiful sound.

    Loved your reaction to hearing Devin Townsend for the first time Renee. Devi does what I like to call heavy metal musical theater. And you picked up on his performance personality. Devi never fails to entertain and as others have said, I definitely recommend checking his "Why" Quarantine performance from his UA-cam Channel. But you really cannot go wrong with anything from Townsend's discography. There are a good number of live performances like the Ocean Machine show from the Ancient Roman Ampitheatre in Plodiv in 2017 or the Ziltoid show at Royal Albert Hall in 2015. There is also the Retinal Circus show from 2012 at the Roundhouse in London that features vocalists Anneke van Giersbergen as well.

    He also does country! His side project, Casualties of Cool is incredible.
    No accident you mention Jinjer. That's because Jinjer's producer, Max Morton, named Devy his all time favorite producer and the guy he tries to emulate in the studio.
    Devy has been THE most influential and beloved artist/producer/songwriter in metal for decades. People talk about the comedian's comedian; well, he's the metal artist's metal artist. He has worked with every who's who in metal today from Gojira to Gwar. The stuff he does is ten years ahead of its time. The stuff he's doing right now, mixing chorus arrangements with metal is something you'll start to hear a lot from other newer bands in ten or fifteen years.

    Devin Townsend is the single greatest musician on the planet.
    He is also naturally hilarious.

    His vocal range has been noted to be over 5 octaves and 3 notes (C2 to F#7), noting that he mainly masters 2nd and 5th octaves for clean but also raucous vocals and 5th to 7th octaves for purely screamed vocals. Daniel Lake of Decibel Magazine classifies Townsend's voice as a "semi-operatic tenor".

    I don't know if this has been stated in the comments below, so if I'm repeating, forgive me. But if memory serves, the lyrics deal with a time he was dealing with addiction to drugs and was a love song to his wife to stick with him through it. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but that's what I remember him saying about the song's meaning.

    Devin Townsend has something that seems to be missing from a lot of rock and metal lately. You mentioned it in your reaction. He has fun and doesn't take himself too seriously. I love rock and metal but too many performers take themselves too seriously and the music and the performers lack fun.

    I'd love to see one of the youtube reacting channels to check out the really old material by all the reaction favs. for instance this one: "Strapping Young Lad live 8.13.1997 kinda pro shot (Pops, Sauget IL)" You don't have to do a 'live reaction' just skip through it and comment on the difference between now and then.

    I really don't believe he's stressing his cords that much, because he's got the mic IN his mouth almost, and because of how crispy his clean channel stays through the whole song.

      He's also been singing like this for almost 30 years so I'm gonna venture a guess that he's doing it in a healthy way.
