You're are totally right about screams taking more air than singing. I've always said to people who ask how to do it "its like gargling without water."
They recently did a live performance for Sirius Xm radio that was posted on UA-cam of several of their songs. I would recommend any of those performances, she's definitely on her A game in them.
More on topic: Courtney has said in an interview that one inspiration for her music is exploring things she fears. Totally makes sense with the idea of a burn victim, I think that's a lot of people's fears. Less on topic: I found your channel and I love your reactions. I can tell that for you, music is like watching the ocean, not just something you hear. You feel the waves wash over you and watch the sea move and the sky wrap around it, in addition to listening to the crash of the waves and the call of the birds. It's so wonderful to see.
The transition from those ethereal clean vocals into the screams gives me the feeling of a siren leading you into a trap. Alluring and then goes right in for the kill. I wish I had like 10% of this vocal talent lol.
constance is an emotional one. Belcarra has a very different sound to most of their stuff, and it's sick. Holy Roller is mental, and blessed be is a nice mix of cleans and harsh!
One female vocalist I've always really dug is Simone Pluijmers, of Cerebral Bore. They are no longer active, and haven't been for awhile BUT it was really cool to see a female vocalist embrace and commit to a purely brutal type of metal music and harsh vocals. She released an album with Your Chance To Die in 2017, which also has great harsh vocals from her. Both bands never really found traction to become mainstays, which is a shame because they were both stellar groups. Would be super rad to see you do a react video to Simone. Recommendations are the song "Maniacal Miscreation" (Cerebral Bore) or "Ignite The Sky" (YCTD). Thanks and I love your content!
One of my favorite things about harsh and cleans is when you can do both and you hit the transition from clean to harsh or harsh to clean. Feels so good
Perspective of an audio engineer (regarding sibilance) Some factors to consider, she is recording with a Shure SM7B, which is great for screaming, but definitely doesn't have a lot of top end compared to most studio vocal mics (large diaphragm condensers), and also it is possible her vocals have been "de-eSSed", so it is hard to tell how sibilant her voice is without knowing if it has been de-essed.. On a different note, I love that song and I enjoy your videos! I just wanted to give my .02
All of spiritbox’s catalog is great. Can’t go wrong with any of their stuff, but “the beauty of suffering”, “blessed be”, “belcara” are some of my favorites.
What a nice in-depth analysis of her cleans when she added more body on the first chorus part and what nice attention to the details of her screaming technique. Courtney is one of the pioneers in her field and impressed and influenced a lot of people, incl. Tatiana from Jinjer, in her previous band iwrestledabearonce. The other band members are not less amazing, and Mike's way of songwriting is so perfectionist and intuitive, it was a blast to see him working out a song on a live stream... And for sure, my recommendation is "The Mara Effect live at Silverside Sound Studios". The band one-take that shows nearly the whole bandwidth of their work and Courtney's vocal abilities. And the principle "forget show-off, art comes first".
Another amazing female vocalist is Angela Gossow. She hits amazing lows for a woman. The absolute power in her voice made me fall in love with arch enemy
Elizabeth, I have been a fan of your channel for a very long time and just recently seen some of your performances and was blown away by how powerful your voice is. I haven't read through all of the comments by I wanted to say I love how your hair looks in this video. I've watched this video countless times, it is priceless when Courtney goes into her harsh vocals you giggled and stopped yourself. "It's like this little angel disappeared..." You are easily my favorite UA-cam personality for reactions.
YES!!!!!! I've been waiting for this one for so long! Courtney does a very different scream from Tatiana and I can't wait to hear what you think of it. For more melodic songs from Spiritbox I recommend Blessed Be, Trust Fall and Perennial. And speaking of Perennial you should also check out Jinjer's ;)
Would love to see you cover "Depths III" by Silent Planet. Garret Russell flows in and out of a more spoken word sound and full on screams. It's my favorite song by them, by far and I adore his vocal delivery in the song.
Have you done any Coheed and Cambria? I think you might enjoy Claudio's voice and range. "Apollo 1: The Writing Writer" and "Welcome Home" are great tracks to check out. And maybe some Rush please. Geddy has one of those voices you either love or hate, but I just think it is endlessly fun.
ua-cam.com/video/xtat4wdIoxE/v-deo.html Okay. So I know how much you understand vocals. I just stumbled onto this band and this song. I immediately thought you would like to hear they vocals and how it's surrounded by the rest of the band that are equally talented. Its powerful.
I think with the whole Rule of Nines its about her wanting to be burned to the absolute maximum to the point where she becomes less then ash. She literally would become 'light' nothing to strain, no body of pain. ETC ETC.
Courtney has a beautiful singing voice, but at the same time one of the best female screams. I loved watching the coach lose her mind when she heard the screaming the first time. Oh yeah, you haven't heard Spiritbox yet! Lol!
Her “live” performances have gotten better since then. You should check out the Spiritbox Liquid Metal streams. Any or all 3 parts of the stream(part 3 is my favorite). I think her voice is at peak performance in that stream, plus the rest of the band is actually performing with her.
This was posted almost a year and eight months ago and it’s only now I’m watching it. What a fantastic voice this lady has! Very soothing but so powerful and strong. And her screams are really cool too. You’re right, she uses a lot of air.
Everyone is gonna say to do their more recent stuff, but the beauty of suffering is possibly my favorite of theirs, and she does a one take performance of it as well.
I feel like the contrast in songs, bands and singers such as this are so appealing, due to the contrast itself. There is an oxymoronic aesthetic that builds a beautiful flow.
She looks a lot like an elfin character that i created once in Skyrim. That character was also a bard and a warrior, and Courtney's voice changes would perfectly reflect those two apects of her.
I've been waiting for Spiritbox! They're amazing. I'm pleased you're doing Rule of Nines - it and Blessed Be are my favourites. Constance is a must watch too though, not because it's the best demonstration of Courtney's talents, but because it's the best integration of a song and its video I have ever seen.
Courtney LaPlante is a gem!! Absolutely beautiful melodic tones with a demonic scream that will shatter your bones. Truly underrated vocalist, this band is amazing live too. I would love to see you react to the one take of Circle With Me, ITS ALSO 🔥🔥
First time watching one of your videos, just because I enjoy watching people be blown away by metal vocalist, but your facial expressions and mix of emotions are you listen are just adorable. To see pure wonder/surprise/intrigue on someone's face as something happens is just enjoyable to my spirit.
It sounds so good. Hope to see Spiritbox live. One of the other upcoming metal bands is Orbit Culture (both mentioned in a fan poll about 5 act that will breakthrough in 2021 by Revolver). Niklas writes the music & lyrics and mixes & masters himself. He also screams and has cleans. His lyrics are about mental health issues which he now identifies as "harm OCD."
It's amazing how your mimic reacts to human voices again and again. I've seen a lot of video reactions from you and you must be a very sensitive person. Thank you that you take the time to analyze vocalists. You're gifted.
I love the fact that Tatiana and Courtney are similar in the way they can switch back n forth between harsh and clean vocals so effortlessly... but the manner in how they deliver is different enough so they aren't carbon copies. Like Courtney's softer cleans versus Tatiana's belting.. (I will check out more Spiritbox now too...)
Excellent. The contrast between a female singing voice going into deep growls and screaming is really exciting. Courtney and Tati take it to another level because of the quality of their natural singing voices....they are of course different, but they both have pretty voices that have a lot of texture....breathy, vibrato, velvety and sultry and at times twangy. It's that rich voice switching into deep growls and pitched screams that is such a contrast and why women like these own the metal scene. Rock on.
I would absolutely love to see you react to something by Andy Cizek at some point. Extremely underrated and one of the best vocalists currently out there in my opinion. His versatility and consistency are insane. His one take performances for some of Monuments' most recent songs are all great. False Providence, Cardinal Red, Lavos and Deadnest each have their own unique aspects to them. Hearing your take on any of those would be very interesting.

i think that is the power behind the skill of screaming, the fact that she can mix texture (airy-ness or grit) into her singing voice and at the same time hit recognizable "notes" while screaming, that premonition at the end........

100% need some dayseeker on this channel. Rory has an insane clean and harsh vocal. The band as a whole are insanely underrated.
For sure. Rory has the most melodic screams I have ever heard. They fit so perfectly.
I'd love to see a reaction to "Constance". If only because of the feels.
Why not have a cry with Elizabeth?
Definitely a cryer of a track. Especially with the video.
constance is insta-cry. every. damn. time.
Was hoping Spiritbox would land on your radar. Definitely looking forward to this one.
I am curious on her thoughts on this one.
Constance straight made me bawl 😂
Now we need one from when Courtney was in “I wrestled a bear once”
YES!!!! Agreed
Lol
what a throwback. Saw them on their first tour with Krysta. I was so much cooler 10 years ago lol
@@metalchips I imagine all of us were. :p
Who’s that? A cover band of iwrestledabearonce?
Please listen to Spiritbox - Constance. Its very emotional and she sings only in clear voice, no screaming.
One of the best bands out right now, can’t wait to see your reaction and thoughts 😋
CIRCLE WITH ME IS A MUST REACT!!! She’s amazing there too
Admit it, everyone is subscribed just to hopefully hear Elizabeth screaming/grunting one time 😂
One of my favorite things about harsh and cleans is when you can do both and you hit the transition from clean to harsh or harsh to clean. Feels so good
Finally! It's time for singing, and then some screaming, and then some singing and more screaming.
It's always time for that.
Yesss. She's got one of my absolute favorite screams in modern metal. Always such shockingly brutal goodness.
I love this song so much ❤️
I can't wait to hear this reaction!
I just wanted to give my .02
This was my introduction to Spiritbox. And I LOVED it.
They just gained a new fan .
Happy 300k Subs.
Thank you!
Ahh. Glad to see one of our JBP clan. :D
And speaking of Perennial you should also check out Jinjer's ;)
out of all the musical breakdown reactions I see on youtube I always come back to your channel.
That honk when courtney transitioned into harsh vocals literally made me spit water all over my carpet 😂😂😂
The recent live version they did in their jam space for liquid metal IS SOOOOOOO GOOOD
Would love to see you cover "Depths III" by Silent Planet. Garret Russell flows in and out of a more spoken word sound and full on screams. It's my favorite song by them, by far and I adore his vocal delivery in the song.
We just released merchandise! Check out the full line-up here: thecharismaticmerch.com
You need to check out picturesque.

Okay. So I know how much you understand vocals. I just stumbled onto this band and this song. I immediately thought you would like to hear they vocals and how it's surrounded by the rest of the band that are equally talented. Its powerful.
You want Courntey's vocal listen to:
1. Constance
2. Secret Garden
Darling you must react to Silent Planet - The sound of sleep or second sun , Wage - war if tomorrow never comes
Lol!
You kept pausing too soon at the end!! hahaha THANK YOU!!! I'm in love with this band.I'm so happy you FINALLY got to Spiritbox!
Absolutely agreed dude. That whole album was amazing.
Thank the Lords of Nine that we got the "I did it!" at the end.
I would love to see you react to the one take of Circle With Me, ITS ALSO 🔥🔥
"I did it." has me in chuckles since then :D
I was going crazy the first two times Elizabeth paused right as she was about to say that.
She just has so much control in her voice. She is a well seasoned vocalist. From this band and IWABO.
Oathbreaker - 10:56 / Second Son Of R (on Audiotree live)
Something kind of similar to Spiritbox that I haven't seen any reaction channels do yet
Would be awesome if she reacts to that song, hope some day she does.
YES! I need this to happen!
More Spiritbox!! "Blessed Be" and "Hysteria"!
You deed it!
Yeah she "DEED IT" LOL
It's amazing how your mimic reacts to human voices again and again. I've seen a lot of video reactions from you and you must be a very sensitive person. Thank you that you take the time to analyze vocalists. You're gifted.
When are we getting Demolisher by Slaughter to prevail? 😁
Today
This is the best review and analysis I've seen
For more Spiritbox, I recommend the following:

The Beauty Of Suffering Live Performance

Listen to her one take of “Holy Roller” to hear the other side!!
This technique takes years to accomplish. She's the real deal. I'd be honored to have her.... sing for my band. If I had one.
Nice to see a vocal reaction from someone who’s an actual expert in the field 👌🏻
I adore you for this, Elizabeth. Your knowledge, it added in just what I was desiring from a reaction to Sb, by you ! An Absolute appreciation station, I am, and s***.
Excited for your eventual foray into gutturals/sscreams.
Fun fact: Courtney hosts her own brand new podcast called "Good For A Girl" where she interviews other professional women in her industry and genre, from vocalists to crew to music media, etc. You may appreciate the insight and music conversation!
Really enjoying your insight during these vocal explorations! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and enjoyment with the music 🤙
More Courtney:
-Band: Spiritbox
-Songs: "Perennial", "Constance", "Belcarra", "The Mara Effect pt 2" (personal favorite of the 3 parts, and has a great showing of her cleans) or LITERALLY any song, they're a great band and she's excellent.
-Band: iwrestledabearonce - (previous band she subbed in as vocals for two albums)
-Song: "Green Eyes" (I don't know how much more of her stuff with this band "fits" in a reaction/analysis channel, as it's really chaotic music, but feel free)
And she had a wonderful band before all that, called Unicron (spelled as I did), and my favorite song by them with a very fun and varied early performance by LaPlante, titled "Broken Vessels" (it has a YT video too!)
i think that is the power behind the skill of screaming, the fact that she can mix texture (airy-ness or grit) into her singing voice and at the same time hit recognizable "notes" while screaming, that premonition at the end........
I love how Courtney went from Unicron to the second vocalist of IWABO to a reaction channel vocalist haha. Love it.
Her breathes in between the notes are just as beautiful as the words themselves.
