I love how much you love devin, his vocals on Steve vai's song deep down into the pain is insane
Have you checked out Gojira?
You should do Genesis or Evermore by Devin townsend :D
Watching professional musicians discover Devin Townsend is like watching a skeptic witness actual magic. This man is impossibly talented.
Outstanding analogy! 🤘
Precisely 😂
So are the people that recognize it ❤
It is almost a perfect performance until I listen to the drummer just eat it several times🤦♂️.

A Peter Steele & Devin Townsend collab would've been a dream come true.
Devin is one of the very few who can actually scream in pitch. So much power yet almost never out of control.
Joe Duplantier does a good job too.
@@niilaheikki Agreed upon.

Bjorn Strid from Soilwork as well. See “Spectrum of Eternity” “Let This River Flow” “Whirl of Pain“ & “Tongue.”
Sam Carter of Architects is another.
Waited my lifetime for classical and metal to get together. Seeing an opera singer geek out over a metal vocalist feels like a bucket list item I didn't know I had being completed.
Lot of newer bands mix classical with Metal , Major Voice has bass singer , Nightwish composer has classical music background , Wintersun Jari Mäenpää does equally complex compositions and hes self learned and one of his biggest influencer has been Devin , then you have Epica , Kamelot a.s.o
ua-cam.com/video/CPom8u0t2hg/v-deo.html
Tips check out Ayreon :)
Savage did it in the 80s and 90s then became Trans Siberian Orchestra(mostly).
There are some great symphonic metal bands with equally great music written in the classical style. Nightwish and Epica are some of the finest examples of this kind of metal, I think. They both make you want to headband and be soothed or enraptured with the drama provided by the classical composition.
OMG. THE MOMENT ALL FANS AROUND THE WORLD HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR😍😍
Finally!!!!!!

It is a standard right of passage in the reaction youtube world. Also: I don't like most reaction channels, but The Charismatic voice somehow makes it work. I'm a fan
@@ruudhollenberg I'm a simple guy : I see a Devin reaction, I click and subscribe🤷🏻♂️😅😅
I'm waiting for some of the mindblowers from Plovdiv
The fact he was sick/recovering from laryngitis during this concert and this was one of the last songs in a 2 hour set makes him even more impressive
I may be weird but sometimes this song makes me cry because it's so beautiful.
Same here
Lets be wierd together then 🙂
I almost cried watching that video when she repeated the painful part
Not alone
Guilty here too 👍
The feeling we all had when you paused at 20:06 and was impressed, and we knew what will come after
I openly chuckled.
Dude I was thinking same thing
I was hoping this comment was here . "Just unpause it!"
Yeah this. lmao.
Yess! I know the moment you speak of and the better part of the song following it. I love her reactions. She has such an expressive face too. The song is incredible. I've listened to it like 100 times. I always return to it many times a year.

"Pick a tempo" gets me every time
i kind of not get that phrase, meaning "no matter to what tempo you clap?, just do it?" or meaning "clap in fucking time already?"
@@chowmediavaca The crowd was clapping out of time with the song, so he told them to pick a tempo and then the band picked that tempo so the crowd could clap along without being out of time with what the band was playing.
I always interpreted it as an extension to what he was already saying, not a reaction to the crowd.
"Love's a bitch for sure, but if you ever feel like it at all, pick a tempo"
I always thought it just meant "if you feel like trying love, go at a pace your comfortable with"
@@Superferet1 The crowd is clapping out of time with the music when he says it which is why you hear the drummer change tempo with the hi-hat to match them. But that's an interesting thought :)
@@Stygiophobic Crowds ALWAYS clap out of time, which is why I always just saw it as Devin being profound.
Just for one day, I want my wife to look at me the way vocal coaches look at Devin Townsend... haha love this review.
I love this comment
People don’t seem to notice he uses a light vibrato in one of those pitched screams, and that’s like...insane
Pitch screaming like he does in a consistent, healthy way is insane in and of itself
@@spearmintderg What is pitch screaming?
Basically screams with really clear melodic notes in them, sounds like the halfway point between clean singing and full blown screaming where the notes become much less obvious.
13:59 she noticed ;)
He’s a freak.
14:15 "that tells me right away hes really healthy in his production in harsh vocals" little did she know that later on when she interviewed him about his technique his response was "I just scream until it tastes like blood then 2 days later im okay again and then at that point a callous forms and I can do it for a certain amount of time and ... it's not something I would recommend" lolol
That comment restantes so much when You remember that this love.performance was with deving having a sore throat, the sole fact that him was having that condition and screaming his soul out of this song anyway it just hurt My throat to just imagine how much strees and pain this performance was for his voice
I saw Devin live four times. Each time my voice was gone for a day or two just by trying to sing with him as loud and correct as possible with my limited shower singing capabilities. Was totally worth it! 🎶🖖
Said it in chat, will say it again: THE DEATH OF MUSIC from this very same live. Devin gets goosebumps from his own singing.
Its one of the best vocal performances ever
I prefer the Plovdiv performance but by far one of his best songs (discounting SYL of course!).
Every single one of us there got goosebumps during that song!
I have to agree the Plovdiv version is better (not that the Royal Albert Hall one is bad) & I attended both of those concerts. The production & quality on the Plovdiv version is superior, especially with the UA-cam uploads.
Also Devin hadn't been feeling too great just before the Albert hall concert with a bug & it did slightly affect his vocals & stamina at that gig. Compare any of the screams on the Plovdiv versions (especially Death of Music) to the Albert hall ones & you can see it's taking a lot more effort to produce them, as well as sustaining of them. Plovdiv scream is one LONG scream whereas the Albert hall version he split into 2
@@BoozenBoard plovdiv is better technically but there’s something about the atmosphere and lighting of RAH that really resonates with me.
I love when he said pick a tempo. So savage. I can't imagine the amount of bands who would love to say that live but decide not to haha.
Farin Urlaub of Die Ärzte does that live he'll tell the crowd when they're clapping along "It would be nice if you clapped to my tempo, and not some fantasy tempo. Thanks". Hes so charming he pulls it off.
If this was Devin in the SYL era it would probably be really different lol

Welcome to the tribe, good to have you
Oh Wouter, are you new to the channel? LIZ is fully aware of her transition into metalhead. And she loves it.
I cannot stress enough how happy this makes me. I had almost given up lol. For this concert, bare in mind he was sick as all hell the month leading up to this performance, and he has said he had to alter how he sang so he wouldn't disappoint his fans. Because of that, I, as well as many others, believe this concert was his best vocal performance, because he was trying SO hard. From this same concert I highly recommend The Death of Music. Again, thank you for getting back to this wonderful human being.
I second the Death of Music song, it's just amazing.
Agreed, death of music is one of the most emotionally charged song I have ever heard while being so restrained... masterful.
Yes, Death of Music on this concert is pure magic
I fucking love Death of Music. Also I hate it. Right after I discovered RAH video of it, my 15 year old cat died. Now it always bring back memories.
@@richardaubrecht2822 That's hard. The mixed feelings involved with music you associate with pets passing is aching. Every time I've lost a pet, there's been a song for that - and it's both agony and beauty of the shares experiences. Sorry for your loss.
Elizabeth: the crowd is pretty good at clapping on time. Devin: PICK YOUR TEMPO!!
Nope, 'fraid not, friend. Devin and the band have a tempo, and the crowd is nowhere close to it there. You can even see a shot of one poor guy in the crowd trying to find where to clap with a confused look on his face. It's understandable, the music is very quiet at that point.
I'm so excited to see your reaction to this. Not only does he have an incredible voice, but the musical arrangement is absolutely amazing!
It clicked with me instantaneously. Before he even started singing I was on board.
I remember the first time I heard dead head I cried!! His voice is so magical!
Hi Elizabeth, this is my 1st time listening to, "Deadhead," and I loved this performance. Devin is such a dynamic singer who can effortlessly switch from clean to distorted vocals. I also wanted to give a shout out to the audio engineer/mixer for the incredible sound quality inside the Royal Albert Hall. Thank you, Elizabeth!!! 💙
I just wanted you to know that Devin mixes the live dvds himself ;)
It is amazing! Thank you for always being by our side! ;-)
Devin is a very good engineer on top of all of his other talents. I'm a huge fan of his guitar style and his sound. I love that he uses an Evertune bridge on his guitar which definitely stands out in this because his guitar sounds so clean and perfectly in tune.
Make sure to catch the album version. Polished off this song is even more emotional.
Devin's opus, one of the greatest, heaviest song ever recorded. A literal wall of sound.
I just saw Devin play in Redmond, WA and was blown away by his vocal range, projection, and his amazing, joyful personality. He's a true legend. Oh, and then he was followed up by Dream Theater to close out the show. What a treat!
I was at that show as well. Devin seemed very healthy and happy. Having seen him a dozen or so times since the late 90's, that hasn't always been the case. I felt like he made a lot of new fans that day. I loved his crack about feeling like he was playing a wedding because of all the white chairs.
This man is in a league of his own, such a talented performer with such control over his voice...it helps that he loves his fans and always puts on a brilliant show.
So glad you did this song 👌
The classic at Royal Albert Hall! Awesome! One of the greatest metal vocal performances ever!
This is my absolute favorite version of this song, you picked the right one! The mix on this is absolutely perfect. I've listened to this probably 500x, and it still gives me chills every time. Yes, my neighbors hate me lol.
I love how much storytelling Devin does just through the different tones he picks.
I interpret this song as being about the ups and downs of a relationship. The first section seems to be more sarcastic "Will you save me? hurray for you" in the more nasal tone. Essentially mocking her because she's trying to help but he's not ready to receive it.
In the middle section, they're actually fighting it out "you are so vicious; hurt me; I can take it"
The instrumental section could be about his anger/reflection and ultimate acceptance (with the happier tone shift at the end).
In the end he's ready for her help and is genuinely pleading for her to save him. "Will you save me? Babe? Babe? Babe?" He's sort of mirroring the lines from the beginning but this time he actually means it.
Devy's high screams at the end are unmatched, I can't think of a single person other than him who can scream like he does with the high notes and added fry/harshness on it.
Yep. One of the best. I would suggest Satellites by Periphery. Spencer sings some exceptional highs in that song.
I know one...
Himself.
On the album acoustically inclined, check it out on Spotify... It's insane
This song is the epitome of beauty meets pain. One of the greatest songs of all time and watching it still brings a tear to my eye because I can’t contain the groundswell of emotion I feel
There's no way this wasn't going to be awesome, but DAMN! At 19:46 Devin lets loose with the mightiest "Oh Yeah!" ever recorded and his anguished screaming of "Can you save me, babe" is absolutely gut-wrenching! Also , he looks like he's about to turn into a werewolf or something when he does those screams! Devin's vocal and guitar tones are just amazing and it's also a rare treat to see Elizabeth matched up with an equally expressive face. I've had three family members diagnosed with Covid in the last two weeks so I NEEDED this!
“Iron Maiden t-shirt!” You’re so adorable ❤️❤️❤️
Would have been even more impressed if she picked up on the Shining t-shirt! Check out Blackjazz.

@@MattVogt2 Blackjazz is such a great and crazy album. will always have a special place in my heart.
Devin Townsend‘s voice literally gives me chills.
Devin as "Rage" in Ayreon's The Human Equation are some of the best tracks on that album.
I so knew you would enjoy it! This performance hits a spot in me that I never knew that existed, feeling emotions, crying, and having ultimate goosebumps at the same time.
This show at the Royal Albert Hall is definitely my favorite of Devy. It really shows his range and all the while (I've read) he was getting over being sick. So this shows how dedicated he is to giving his all in a performance.
The scream at 20:00 had so much emotion that it made me shed a tear. Sounds so sad yet beautiful! And all the following distorted vocals as well.
"I wonder if there's some sort of backing layer..." This is Devin, there are probably 100 backing layers throughout. Lol. You should see his mix sessions, they're absolutely bonkers, in the best possible way...
This is the most important song of Devins to me. I found it during the end of a rocky distance relationship while at one of his last concerts in Toronto, 2020. I was supposed to be at that show with the girl I fell out with, we ended things a few weeks before the concert. When I heard the song, standing in the audience, it instantly connected with me and my emotions. It seemed to express exactly what I had been going through for the past bit of time and the emotions I was feeling: the good, the bad, the good, the bad, the end. I loved that girl but it was painful but I still wanted her. It ultimatly didn't last. My experience is the way I interpret the song and it's really helped developed a strong connection in me to Devins music over the past couple of years. I'll forever be greatful to him. Specially for this song. Thanks a lot for doing this review.
Devin Townsend is a one in a century pure genius. The man rips your brain and heart in every song.
how can anyone listen to this song and not tear up a bit. its so beautiful and so painful. it has so much emotion
Devin is a musical wonder
I’m no singer or vocal expert, but it’s not hard to appreciate this man’s gift and skill. It’s not just any vocalist that can scream “whoa” or “whoa yeah” and bring tears to your eyes. Such emotion, long live Hevy Devy! Great video and commentary, thank you for spending your time with us here.
Your reactions are my favorite. You honestly express excitement and joy. I’ve listened to metal for years. Across the genres that metal offers. Thank you for your real and genuine interest in these songs. I get ‘goosebumps’ when listening to certain songs. And Devin has done this to me quite often. Do you experience this as well when you’re reacting to songs? Please keep doing what you’re doing.
"It makes me want to headbang; I don't headbang.." You are awesome :-)
First time I saw this song I was blown away. Watching this after I watched your interview. So, this is an amazing reaction video. The hypnotic tones draw you in and then he punches you in the face with the "Fry" scream. The pregnant pauses in the music really get me, as does Pikachu.
I just love how your face lights up when Dev emits emotion from his voice. Your reactions are so pure it makes me smile. I watched the interview first before watching this, but I think you forgot to ask him about Bruce Dickinson influences? Also noticed you released these on my bday, so it made it extra special for me to watch. :)
6:45 The subtle expression in his vocals here is SO beautiful. Been a fan of him since the mid-90s. This man's voice brings me to tears.
Ah yes, my favourite genre of UA-cam; people reacting to Devy
Thanks for making me cry at work. I've been a massive fan of Devin for almost 20 years, and Deadhead is my all time favorite song period. This song echoes through every fiber of my soul(lyrically, tonally, rhythmically), and your interpretation is one I've been trying to put into words since I first heard it over 15 years ago. Thank you.
"Let's hear that one more time." - That's the line that keeps coming me back for more.
Thanks!
I am 61, have seen many, many bands as a sound man and have never been more spiritually alive as when I hear this tune.
The orchestration is spot on. Now to wait in a very long line to see them perform live.
I'd loooove for you to check out some of the work Devin has done with singer Anneke Van Giersbergen. They usually sing together on tracks and their voices compliment each other like you wouldn't believe. The performance titled "Devin Townsend Project - Supercrush (Addicted Live)" would be a great place to start.
Heh, good call. I just suggested the Retinal Circus version of Bend it Like Bender. ;)
Or go with the album version of “addicted” - that chorus is amazing with the layering of the sound beneath the vocal layering
YES
Also just react to Anneke herself! Do my little Dutch heart proud;)
I am listening to Devin for the first time here in this reaction video and from the very first second I got massive "The Gathering" vibes. I can see why a collaboration between Anneke and Devin had to happen.
Heard this for the first time when I was 14-15 and it forever changed how I viewed metal as a whole. I still weep openly every time I listen to this.
What gets me every time is he’s a funny guy, jokes the entire show, banters during every song. Any time this he plays this song, be it clinic or show, he just pours straight emotion into it. ‘Pick a tempo’ was the only time he threw something in, but every time he just shuts down and pours 100% into this song. Forever my favorite Devy tune.
Fun Fact: This was 3ish hour comcert, the first half was the Ziltoid Story amd the second part where this song is from was voted by Fans. He asked on Facebook beforehand what songs the fans wanted to hear and dhe delivered. Iirc Deadhead was somewhere betweem 2-2½h into the concert + i think he also mentioned he was havin a mild cold too that evening xD
This song live gives me life. So blessed to have seen him in 2020 like a week before the world closed.
The emotional stoytelling of this song is maybe the most powerful I've ever heard, and recalled to me the intense feelings I had as a teen, where the feelings I had about crushes would manically oscillate between totally unreasonable adoration and totally unreasonable frustration and hurt. Love's a bitch is my experience for sure. It's devastatingly honest, and devastatingly accurate. There's just no hiding from it.
I like that he had the guts to make basically a two-chord song. Only someone who understands the purpose of adding sound to poetry would try this.
That was what was awesome about Static-X. Probably the most simple music ever made but damn did it bang.
I like that his wall of sound comes from his open chord tuning, lots of octaves in it too, the groove and sound has a deftones feel
@@darryllzwiers7257 Yep. He really tapped into something here.
@@SpykeZ0129 👍
But he's such a great composer, he subtly changes chord voicing, rhythm, and embellishments...it's a great technique used by musicians who understand composition...like Devin.
I’ve filmed Devin live Three times. The guy is awesome. He’s really down to earth. But has really positive/ craziness aura about him. Awesomely talented. Great showman. All his shows were a pleasure to see through a camera lens.
I've been listening to Devin since he was about 19 yrs old... he has had a LOT of practice for his voice... he has done well

I love you for stopping at the best moments 😂 oh my god, I enjoy your content so much. You have fantastic hair too Elizabeth! Aaahh woman crush ❤️
"This makes me want to headbang!" that's how you know you've found the metal song for you :D God I love Devin so much ♥
Devin is a master of contrast in his music and his singing. How do you know what "beauty" is, without "ugly"? What bliss is, without pain?
this is about 1.5hrs into the set too. Always mind-blowing! I was there!
Amazing!
I want to express my thanks. I don't know a lot of people who appreciate Devin's music or this type of music in general. Watching your videos, it's like i finally have someone to nerd out with. Keep making awesome content
This was my first ever live show with Devin and I was pretty new to his music. This was such an insane eye opening concert in regards of his skills as a song writer and singer. I was mindblown. Even though I know many people love this song, my personal favorite was Funeral.
I love watching your expressions and how excited you get when he gets into a vocal fry. Keep making great content!
Your facial responses are at least 1/3 of the content (no negative implications). The ability to convey your emotions without constantly having to stop the video is delightful.
Devy's music helped me get through the passing of my father. That's the power music can have, it can help heal the soul. I will always be grateful to this man for that.
20:06 - "Wow, wow, wow!" This reaction describes Devin Townsend's vocals perfectly.
Elizabeth, I love how you picked up on the change at 18:43 and your reaction to it. That guitar riff always gives me goosebumps. It's such a great riff and really stands out.
Oh, and if Devin has got you head-banging, then who am I to argue with that? I'll be doing it right here with you. I love how you're so open to all kinds of music. It's a great thing to see, and I never get tired of your facial expressions. Always like a kid at Christmas.
Oh, and the "if you feel like it at any point though, pick a tempo." That always brings a smile to my face.
Devin is a force of nature and I love him to bits.
I'm genuinely impressed about how you were actually able to pick out so much detail off his voice in this _massive_ mix hahahah
We are all lucky to have this live performance on video. This is legendary.
This and Death of Music are two of the few songs I've heard that bring out at huge emotional response in me. Without fail they give me goosebumps and make me tear up every single time. Devin is incredible!
This little thing is what devin is known for he speaks to ur soul. 9:09 the big smile then at 9:14 look at her brow, her expression and smile was wiped from her face the emotion he evoked from her. Longing, sadness, but at the same time hypnotized by it. It’s small to notice but monumental in effect.
Thank you SO MUCH for this Devin reaction! ❤️
Devin is still probably the most fun I’ve ever had at a live show. Everyone in the room feels like your best friend, and the energy is just palpable. Unforgettable. Not to mention the sound quality.
Wow, You're interviewing the man himself. You're hitting the big time. Congratulations
I've had the opportunity to see this man do this live several times. It turns my body into one giant goose bump every time. Look back into his back catalog and production tutorials. He is one of the best musicians/composers/producers of our time.
This is what I've been waiting for.
A new Devin Townsend reaction and an interview with the man himself, Now this is quality content.
for the best part of a decade I could not listen to this song without crying. Still burns. Holy fuck
Devin’s voice pushes the boundaries of what vocals can be, how they can project, the power of his voice is unmatched. Never heard anything like this song
It has been too long :D
And you're interviewing Devin half an hour after this premiers?

There are some occasions when the ability to only give one thumbs up is not enough. This is not only one of them, this is a time when a dozen would not be enough. My favourite track from one of my favourite artists reviewed by my favourite reaction channel. What is not to love?
If you made a shirt that said "Use all of your singing hole" I would buy it

In the works!
Ah.... Gotta love Devin, only guy I've ever heard scream so exceptionally aggressively and manage to keep his voice in there and one of the only I've ever heard be able to hold a full coherent conversation while absolutely shredding
The thumbnail itself already made my day, just like Kirkzabeth's excitement upon discovering #singinghole for the first time.
Who is Kirk?
My god, i love your videos. I am a Devin Townsend Fan for 20 years now, but your explanations make me listen even closer and rediscover his music, and it gives me goose bumps to discover all the things you are explaining in his voice...THANKS!! Regards from Switzerland
Did she look like she was about to cry at the end of his video, or was it just me? Deadhead is an emotional song after all.
All reaction vids are one of three categories: they either ugly-cry, or completely nerd out over his technique, or both!
This song made me tear up the first time I heard it, even now, many years later it still strikes a nerve in me.. the power of Devin is real
This is my favorite Devin song by a mile! I cant help it, I tear up EVERY time he starts singing that second verse.. The power in his vocals are just insane! I have to admit I was screaming at you for stopping right before the best part came hahah! Love the reaction
Brilliant interpretation of the song, Devons lyrical and vocal mastery are impressive, even to a pro. It's a bonus that her reactions to his talents are so expressive. Her giddy giggles of joy and amazement make me happy. She has such an expressive face. Her beauty and intelligence are wonderful.
22:20 "It sounds so painful."
That's why it makes me cry every time I hear it.
Possibly my favourite song ever, it never fails to give me chills. So glad you found this!
Lol I just watched your reaction to Devin’s Quarantines Session “Why” and you said that you needed and octopus like his, and now I see one in the back xD
Exactly, that was the moment!
having watched the original song AND this video for years and years I am still amazed of how this song still makes me cry AND laugh just seconds apart! Too soft a heart?
Long tradition in metal of band members wearing the t-shirt of a favorite band on stage (re: the Iron Maiden shout-out).
This performance stirs me anew when I watch a newbie's reaction to it. For those who have been awed by Devin's greatness, just realize this greatness is in you too. 🙂🤩
I love watching vocal coaches react to bands be cause I can live vicariously through them experiencing it for the first time!
