Having a healthy liver is a vital component to combating the toxic junk and chemicals in our environment. A healthy liver means your body stays healthy, you don’t get sick, and you maintain plenty of energy. Unfortunately however, 90 million Americans-and a growing number of individuals worldwide-have what is called fatty liver disease, which literally means your liver fills with fat. This then paves the path for chronic disease and inflammation. But the good news is that fatty liver can be easily treated and reversed with some basic dietary and lifestyle changes.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss how our high-starch and high-sugar diets are largely responsible for driving fatty liver disease, how to know if you have a fatty liver, and how they work with patients to prevent and reverse it.
Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the Functional Medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well.

On September 9, 2019 I received a diagnosis of NAFLD with NASH and F3-F4 fibrosis. I adopted a ketogenic diet and a year later my liver issues were completely resolved, all my visceral fat was gone, I dropped 60 pounds and was able to begin exercising. People really need to attend to their diets.

I had fatty liver from being 20 to 25 lbs overweight. I do not drink any alcohol. I started eating really healthy and incorporated intermittent fasting. I ate mostly Ezekiel products such as their bread and tortillas. I cut out dairy completely. I ate organic chicken and a little organic meat along with a lot of fruits and vegetables. Not only did I lose weight and my fatty liver was gone but my skin really cleared up and I looked a lot younger.

I’ve watched my daughter and her children suffer from men in her life that have been addicted to junk food and candy. The children that are no longer in that situation have rickets from the poor eating while under the time of poor eating. With the youngest who it was only a few years he is a 15 year old and the rickets embarrass him. But it shows how poor eating truly affects how the body is formed. But my whole point started out as a man eating junk
And allowing the family to eat out at drive-through’s and fast food joints has a huge effect on the family and their health and mom’s gaining weight and children not getting the nutrients they need

Time my doctor would never spend with me … you are helping so many people … my doctor has never mentioned any of the things that you talk about. My advice to others: if you get blood work done, check it yourself and don’t rely on your doc or other provider to go over it. I say this bc I usually don’t look at my results and have figured that the doctor would tell me if there was anything altering. Well, one day I checked my results and came to my doctor with what I found….elevated liver enzymes. I was told that I really don’t have to worry unless my enzymes reach a higher number………I kept asking questions and my doctor said that it’s probably just a fatty liver….no. If deal! Wow, instead of not worrying about maybe having a fatty liver and waiting for my liver enzymes to increase even more before worrying, I’ve been learning a lot….like from this great video. I am hoping to have normal liver enzymes next time I get my blood tested. So far, have lost 5 pounds with this great advice and hoping to lose the visceral fat…..very exciting to me!

The best thing to do for non alcoholic fatty liver is eat a whole food based diet with no processed sugars. Natural fruits are fine in moderation. If keto works, great, but so many keto convenience and snack foods are processed. The reason keto works for fatty liver is because there's no processed sugar in keto diets, but you'd be doing your body a favor by also incorporating some healthy low low glycemic carbs loaded with micro nutrients (eg sweet potatoes) imo. Lots of veggies and beans. Lots of water. Take a sulphoraphane supplement like BROQ (the doctor in this podcast mentions the importance of sulphoraphane for liver detoxification but it has many other benefits, too).
Basicslly just avoiding processed foods and especially processed sugar as much as possible is the key component and getting out, exercising and maintaining low body fat also helps exponentially. It's amazing how many ailments and chronic issues can resolve themselves when your body is optimized. Best of luck!

There are ways to naturally cleanse the body of parasites. I also think that our bodies have the ability to adapt to hazardous environments that could make it stronger. Also reminded me this is not the VA s fault but mine by deciding what went on my plate and into my mouth i only had myself to blame by my choices and now it was time to pay the price. The liver can heal itself and you need a second opinion on your prognosis. For diabetes you need to drastically reduce your intake of sugar and carbs ( like pasta.). Don't let them hand you the " eat all the carbs you want, just cover it with insulin crap" . If you have diabetes you have trouble managing carbs so you need to limit them. Also if you drink soda stop 🚏 immediately because of the high levels of sugar. Good luck, listen to podcasts, look a t books in health section of bookstores.

depends. commercially frozen often catches produce at their peak & preserves it if stored properly (no freeze thaw cycles). most cut veggies are individually quick frozen (IQF). fresh may have higher benefits if it is not stored long or improperly. fresh may be better if locally grown & higher nutrient density. commercial frozen are often a single hybrid. if you do not have access to fresh, or can't keep up w/ your store bought produce, frozen is an ideal solution.

I’m 5’2”and NO alcohol of any kind but I have NAFLD. I’ve cut back on “junk food “. I use no sugars in food I make and if I need something in baking it’s monk fruit! But I still have stomach issues and it hurts so much. I eat only organic ( when I can get it) and grass fed meats! What else can I do to get rid of NAFLD?

Im pretty thin. 6 ft 174lbs bmi 22.5. I have had a sharp blip of pain by my liver for years. Sometimes it really hurts amd drops me to the floor. Had all kinds of scans and tests and nothing comes back. Went full vegtable no meat or eggs or gluten and felt better. Then started eatting meat and a lot of it. Felt fine. Then got really carried away with carbs and fruit and ZAPPPP the pain came back after 2 year hiatus. Im wonderering if its lean fatty liver. Cutting carbs again amd going back to dr in a month for another look. 3rd time!

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY Insurance companies refuse to pay for nutritional medical care. Ultimately they will save SO MUCH on every person who utilizes GOOD and PREVENTATIVE medical advice, rather than waiting until sickness sets in and then they become chronic "patients" for the rest of their lives. Makes ZERO sense to me.

I found out I had a fatty liver when I had a CT scan done to check my lung and heart. I lost my brother and niece to cirrhosis so I was quite surprised that I would have this since I’ve never drank at all!!!. My cap score was 279 and kPA was 5.5 according to one FibroScan but the doctor said it was invalid because I had a loop recorder. After removing loop recorder a year later my cap score was 190 but my kPA is now 9.9 so after follow the Mediterranean diet I’m very upset I thought it would be cured. Can you offer me any hope that this is reversible now? Thanks Felicia

I have this and to reverse it you may need to be very strict for quite a while. And don’t cheat if you are serious about getting well. Keto at least, less than 20 total carbs a day. Or even better, carnivore. Have pertinent labs followed while you are on the diet. My lab values are improving every three months. But I am not cheating. This can ruin your liver, that’s enough to scare you into not cheating.
