Your description of why you like their solos is very applicable to metal I'm general. So many heavy bands just blasts notes at you but don't write songs. Repetition is SUPER important for people to latch onto. We don't have to understand a word you're saying as long as there's a hook.
The channel The Charismatic Voice did what im sure many vocal coaches want to do, see what his throats doing. Elizabeth has a video of him making these sounds while they have a camera down his throat. Real interesting! Will is something else.

Damn, this and the Ne Obliviscaris reaction in short order, Julia stepping up her game! How about Epica - Unleashed Live Retrospect for some gorgeous female vocals combined with interesting music and composition?
Great reaction! From some interviews he's done and some of his more recent Instagram stories, it's looking like we're going to be getting some clean vocals from him in the upcoming LP which should be interesting and I'm really excited for
So the tongue coming forward is very important for the sound Will is getting on some of those highs. If you noticed, some of his highs have that more Smeagoly sound to them and other ones kind of sound like he's screaming through a long pvc pipe. I don't really know how else to describe it. But it's the tongue getting pushed out with the tip against the back of the bottom teeth that causes that sound.
Wow with your description of the long PVC tube, I now understand why they call it the "tunnel throat" or "tunnels" - but you're spot on the tongue is the key to that sound.
The fact he does this live too and his vocals sound pretty much the same in person as he does on the EP. I saw them in Leeds last month and was fixated on Will. Can’t wait to see Lorna shore again in a festival setting at Bloodstock in august and an arena setting with parkway drive in October. They are just pure deathcore perfection.
Absolute Banger! Can’t wait to see this one! Time to recommend an underrated deathcore band by the name of Brand of Sacrifice. All of their music is based off anime and mangas. The vocalist is Uber talented. If you do react to them I recommend doing their song “Demon King” but also doing a short cover the vocalist for “The Rumbling” the Attack on Titan intro, that way you get a full view of his range
true, he has a similar range as Will does. Maybe not quite as extreme, but better than most others in extreme vocals. Kinda like Tom Barber and Ben Duer
as someone who does extreme vocals, tongue and diaphragm are everything. To answer the question about the tongue, pushing the tongue forward allows for highs and fry screaming.
How IS it posible that in one of the best vocal coach channels in all UA-cam there IS not an Alice in Chains reaction??? How???? We must fix that. 🤗 Greetings from Spain.
I rather suspect that Will's "Smeagol" voice is not actually a fry scream per se, but rather an aryepiglottic fold scream plus significant rattling from the lingual dorsum as essentially an unvoiced palatal fricative. His slow growls also seem to be produced from more than just his vestibular folds - they just have way too much depth and texture. I hear very exciting rumblings that Elizabeth got a camera down Mr Ramos's throat and can hardly wait to learn the results!!
I can't comment on the anatomy much, but seeing where the aryepiglottic folds are on the throat leads me to believe it's similar because it very much does feel like that area when I do my own screams. It feels like it comes from the upper part of the throat more than anything, best I could describe it it's like stretching out the bottom end and tightening the top.
Please react too Tommy Johansson when he sings You raise me up. You will love it. He plays guitar in Sabaton and has his own band Majestica. I have followed you for a couple of months and I like your reactions. Thanks from Sweden.
The tongue is used to shape the cavity in the mouth. You can do this yourself if you play around with it enough. You should check out Kardavox Academy for heavy vocal analysis. He does one on To the Hellfire.
Some subtle genius that I don’t think you mentioned: during the final chorus, when the song modulates up both times, Will follows the instruments by using a higher pitched set of screams than he did on the first two choruses that are in the original key. Really fleshes out the feeling that the song is ascending and climaxing, reaching a literal high point. So much better than if they had just used the same vocals as before. Super well thought out on Lorna’s part. Hats off to them for this entire ep and the two latest singles, they’re both excellent. Can’t wait till October for the new album!
When he curls his tongue out like that he’s actually setting the tip of his tongue on his bottom row of teeth to create this extra cavity under the tongue for the sound to travel which makes that almost zombie-like sound. It’s one of my favorite techniques to do
The tongue definitely helps. Look up Travis Ryan from Cattle Decapitation, he can do the 'smeagol' vocals but also change pitch so its like he's singing. Check out Your Disposal by them :)
He looks incredibly relaxed, but I think if you were to look at most of these vocalist in studios or having fun they look relaxed. The strained appearance is just that, it’s a look put on for shows or music videos. It doesn’t help the sound in anyway but looks good
Curling the tongue creates a secondary place for resonance. I think you're picking up that sound as "phlegmy". Believe it's a technique called tunnel throat if I'm not mistaken.
Just saw them live for the second time and they went insane as always theyre so wild live. Will the lead singer is such a unicorn. Im so glad youre exploring and being so open minded. I wonder if some part of it is hiding his technique on purpose. Disclaimer - I don't understand any of the business dynamics around a person's tongue shape.
@@plopoplapa who's an "expert" in harsh vocals can understand any way what he is doing, he's not hiding for some obscure reasons, don't worry. Tongue placement is a huge deal when it comes to the sounds you can make while screaming. It is exactly what causes his high fry screams to sound Smeagal like
I highly recommend checking out a short video regarding “tunnel throat vocals”. This technique is what Will is using when he has his tongue rolled. This creates a zombie like sound
this was a perfect way to start my day! thanks for another awesome video Julia! who knows, maybe Will will come to the comments and answer that tongue question lol
Thank you once again, Julia, for a great reaction / analysis. I think Lorna Shore have some influence from or leaning to the melodeath* sub-genre. The instrumentalists are incredible - almost as incredible as Will's vocals. I think their lead guitarist is an excellent example of what you can do if you practise your scales and arpeggios every day! I'd love to see you react to Blackbriar - Arms of the Ocean (acoustic live).
If you like the kind of gothic approach and these solos, I bet you'd enjoy Children of Bodom and the composition (and execution) talent of the regretted Alexi Laiho. Some orchestras paid tribute to his work and adapted it into classical music pieces (but they also did "guitar lessons" to play classical pieces with heavy metal guitar settings). I bet it has already been recommended a thousand times and you may already know the band but... yeah, if you don't, listening to it may be something you'd like :).
Fun fact. THIS was the song that got me into lorna shore (when the music video released). Originally I had skipped all the reactions of to the hellfire. Binged them ofc after it clicked in me... But still. It was THIS song that got me. Granted, to the hellfire, and Of the Abyss are definitely my 2 most listened to of the 3... by like... a LOT. But hey, better a little late than never right? I've never wanted to sound like someone, as fast as I have wanted to sound like Will. Alas, I'm plagued by a panic disorder that doesn't afford me the luxury of vocal coaching. What a sick cruel world we live in lol Edit: what you have written down at 8:59 is THE EXACT REASON FOR ME GETTING INTO THE SONG IN THE FIRST PLACE. His screams... there's pitch difference naturally... but it also sounds tonal to me. I'm so glad someone else had a similar thought process to me (maybe other people did... but you actually wrote it down, so thank you!)
I've know will Ramos personally my cousin is friends with him he's a kind sweet kind loving supportive person he also show his tongue because he showing how he does it will has told me anyone can do what he does he just takes a lot of practice
It looks like what he's doing with his tongue is a type of scream called a "tunnel scream" or "tunnel throat scream" where you get almost a hollow sound with cool overtones. Will Ramos actually noted similarities to Tuvan throat singing in an interview
Hey Julia! I'm really enjoying your content, so keep up the good work! If I could make a recommendation, I would strongly suggest that you check out Subterranean Masquerade, specifically their song "Nomad". There is this really great kind of live-studio-version of this song here on youtube, which they recorded on a rooftop in Haifa next to a train depot for the Counter C. festival in Japan.
Since Will mainly does fry techniques it definitely helps to keep the throat mucusy and lubricated. And yes the tongue helps shape the words. And to do tunnel vocals where it sounds like two layer of a vocals high/low, it's because of his tongue shape mostly
The tongue thing is often used to create a tunnel like effect. Try it yourself. Try both ways, to the side and to the front bottom teeth and just talk. Try to create different spaces for the sound to move through, feel it out, you'll see.
What I believe hes doing when hes doing the "goblin-y shmeagle sound" is hes kinda folding his tongue like dolpins or Orcas do and this helps get the "shreeky" or "shmeagle" part of the sound and then sticking his tongue out more helps get that "goblin-y" blend by allowing you to move your tongue out of the way and open your through more giving you both the mid and high over tones
Sticking the tongue out opens the sound within the chamber made by the shape of the mouth and the throat. Depending on whether you inhale growl or exhale growl, it changes the texture of the sound travelling down or out of the tunnel. It also makes the effect you are going for sound less contained or constrained. If you sing a note with the tongue inside the mouth and then move your tongue as you hold the note to external to the mouth, you'll hear the way the sound changes.
I absolutely love love love your reactions. I always learn something. And I'm a monster music fan. Any kind of music is game for me from Deathcore to Opera & everything in between...... 😎🤘 Wait.... Country music is still a thorn in my side 😏
From my somewhat intermediate knowledge as a guitar player. His solos have lots of melody from the base of the scales he uses. The fast bits are played with what I’m guessing is alternative(up-down) picking arpeggio scales or sweep picking arpeggios. The high-pitched note ring out at the end are called pinch harmonics; which I can’t explain well so you might have to research.
I recommend the following songs for your harsh vocals journey: Hanabie - We Love Sweets ua-cam.com/video/G18yyvPCiTM/v-deo.html Nemophila - Dissension ua-cam.com/video/26aMuahxz8c/v-deo.html
The tongue moving forward adds a lot of resonance on the top of your mouth (I think it’s known as the soft pallet) and it kinda changes up the sound to make a zombie like noise. It’s one of the coolest things I learned to do with my screams even though it’s very hard to annunciate words with your mouth in that shape 😂
Would love to see you react to Lingua Ignota - "Do You Doubt Me Traitor" (No music video but don’t let that put you off). Musically its a mix between classical and industrial noise with a huge range in vocal styles from harsh vocals to more operatic singing. Kristen is a victim of domestic violence and abuse and draws a lot of inspiration from this for her songwriting, absolutely heartbreaking. For something a bit more stripped back musically, "Pennsylvania Furnace" from her latest album Sinner Get Ready. Kristen is a queen who needs recognition!
Well, I was waiting for you to react to of the abyss because I love that song but with this one it's not that I complain either hehehehe Nice to see Julia and all your alter-egos back in the reaction game 😝
Changing external movements of the mouth does change your sounds. When I used to scream regularly with my band, my friend one time lightly grabbed my jaw and opened and closed it in different directions. Each direction made a slightly different sound than the last. Pitch with a scream though was always done behind the uvula though. I always thought the tighter I made the hole to push air though, the higher the sound; like letting the air out of a balloon but pulling the sides of the nozzle apart. The smaller the hole you force the air out through, the more shrill the sound.
its the tongue positioning with resonance placement often to or under the tongue instead of the usual placements with higher fry being placed in the head or roof of the mouth
If you like Will Ramos and his harsh vocals. Prepared to be blown away with his cleans as well. Check out his cover of Sleep Token - Hypnosis. It will leave you stunned.
You should check out darko us. Tom barber used to be in Lorna shore before will and now he’s with Chelsea grin and does darko us as a side project and his vocals are insane too
So about the solo from a guitarist. The ringing out part you are talking about are called "pinch Harmonics" and are very common in metal. Adam(IIRC his name correctly) likes to do a lot of sweep picking(basically strumming individual notes like a chord but separated) arpeggios in between almost blues style melodic motifs. I agree it makes for some really nice and technically challenging solos. +1 for highlighting the guitar this whole entire band is really great.
you should check out a south african band called vulvodynia, they have a similar sound to lorna and will, so i think you will enjoy them. super deep vocals and gutterals.
Metal music is just so much more, the layers and the sounds.. Making good music can be easy and simple, and you do not really need to be super talented on instruments or vocals to make a good song. ( And not to forget composing ) But to make good metal music, you have to be at the top of your trade on instruments and vocals. ( And again the composing of making such sounds flow together to the story made )
Yet again the plethora of sounds this vocalist can make is insane. We got the whole gamut this time with a close up of some of Will's articulators!

I've been waiting since they released the ep for you to hear this one.
yes the tongue is part of the instrument. I use it a lot too to create higher and lower pitched growls. Its just part of the entire instrument :)
What a sick cruel world we live in lol
Edit: what you have written down at 8:59 is THE EXACT REASON FOR ME GETTING INTO THE SONG IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Absolute god tier vocalist
that is easily one of the greatest guitar solos i have ever heard period
The best display of his technique is their performance of To The Hellfire on SiriusXM, maybe check that out
Lorna shore just released a new song sun eater and its beautiful :)
Waiting for Julia to react to their Pain Remains Trilogy is agonizing.
Wait.... Country music is still a thorn in my side 😏
Very Keen!
This is my favorite song by them. While I love the others with the filthy breakdowns, this one drew me in with the emotion
For the pinch harmonics, the tldr is you artificially make the string shorter by pinching it extremely precisely after picking
Imagine Geoff Castellucci nailing some of those lower register techniques. I'm not saying minds would be blown, but probably some speakers.
I recommend the following songs for your harsh vocals journey:
Hanabie - We Love Sweets
ua-cam.com/video/G18yyvPCiTM/v-deo.html
Nemophila - Dissension
ua-cam.com/video/26aMuahxz8c/v-deo.html
whoohhh...this makes for a terrible journey, honestly..:)
The smaller the hole you force the air out through, the more shrill the sound.
the tongue actually help creating lots of sounds when it comes to vocals. gutteral scream are one of the few of them.
its the tongue positioning with resonance placement often to or under the tongue instead of the usual placements with higher fry being placed in the head or roof of the mouth
Austin is the drummer. Adam De Micco is the lead guitarist.
@@krokodilejaw5431 thanks for the correction. Both "A" names no wonder I used the wrong one.
React to To The Hellfire One Take Vocal Playthrough as well as this one! PLEASE! It's beyond incredible.
Супер ч вас обожаю спасибо за реакцию❤
you should check out a south african band called vulvodynia, they have a similar sound to lorna and will, so i think you will enjoy them. super deep vocals and gutterals.
Please react to "Dermot Kennedy - Moments Passed | A COLORS SHOW". His voice is amazing!
Metal music is just so much more, the layers and the sounds..
Making good music can be easy and simple, and you do not really need to be super talented on instruments or vocals to make a good song. ( And not to forget composing )
But to make good metal music, you have to be at the top of your trade on instruments and vocals. ( And again the composing of making such sounds flow together to the story made )
