The drums at the beginning screaming was the part that made me get initially interested. Heard the song on sirus XM and now I'm a huge sleep token fan

One of the things that makes Sleep Token so good is the intensity contained within a well-modulated rich-toned voice. Very much like Maynard from Tool.
I've been saying they're the modern day heavy pink floyd with a mixture of tool. Melodic and intense instrumentals, strong vocals, and very strong story telling musical arrangement.

Always thought Tool would stand alone for me, but that was the first place my mind went when I started listening to them. Which is crazy, the sound is entirely different. But the song structure, the layering. Lyricism and story telling. The conviction of the vocals. The technicality of the drums. It's all on another level with these two bands specifically. Truly incredible stuff.
I immediately thought the same thing. I have seen both in concert multiple times, and they are both amazing. In terms of presentation/ visuals, TOOL holds the top spot. But vocals, lyrics, and composition they are basicly equal, and I never, ever thought I would say that.

@ 34:58, the "Oh and my love" is the exact same key and general progression as the second part of the first verse "You've got my body, flesh and bone". So not only are they carrying a heightened sense of that same ambient/more chill vibe, they are also picking up and progressing on melodies from all the way at the beginning, as is the guitar (notes played are similar to the chord progressions a bit earlier in the song). It's a simultaneous callback to like 3-4 different parts of the song, while ALSO making it different AGAIN. Absolutely insane.

I studied as an opera student for many years and I SO APPRECIATE THIS WOMAN’S EXPERTISE focusing on what Vessel is doing vocally. I know people get it, he’s really good. But as a vocalist, I’m always thinking critics of this band don’t know HOW GOOD! All the transitions he pulls of with his voice are INSANE and difficult.

I've been impatiently waiting for Elizabeth to finally hear Sleep Token. They're overwhelmingly amazing. Every...single...song. Vessel is one of my favorite vocalists of all time, his range and expression are among the very best. And the drummer, II, is just...inhumanly talented. I could go on and on but I'll just wait for the inevitable CV Sleep Token journey. Just pick a song and you'll fall in love.
And I'm so glad Will joined her for this one. For those who don't know, his vocal cover of Chokehold is magnificent.
I gotta ask, if you ever think you know who Vessel is, don't tell anyone. The band's commitment to anonymity is integral to their art form. I'm definitely curious but I'd honestly rather not know, and I think a lot of fans feel the same.

Its amazing hearing them talking about the feels around the 30 minute mark. Currently deployed to Africa, and I will blast this song in my headphones while walking around base at 2AM. Those feels are so real.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO US???" And oatmeal was just ejected from my nasal cavity onto my keyboard. It's so fulfilling watching two repected professionals of different music genres (though I think we can safely say at this point that we've brought her over to the Dark Side) who appear to be kindred souls appreciate another professional artists work.

I think that the kicker with Sleep Token is that Vessel wrote all of his own music through Sundowning. II was brought on for This Place Will Become Your Tomb.

I “found” Sleep Token only about a month before this song was released… I’ve never heard a band change genres 5 times in a single song before… time signatures, yes, but GENRES?? Love it!

I kept asking for this song, and was getting butt hurt that it wasn’t happening. This is such an unexpectedly amazing treat. As the old saying goes, good things happen to those who wait. I also absolutely love how this friendship between Elizabeth and Will has blossomed, so wholesome!
I'm positive that this collab had to be in the works and was just a matter of timing for them to be together in person.

The vocal transitions are very “jinjer” ish. The way the singer moves through different vocals. This song is awesome.
Absolutely loved this. Will giving his perspective as a fan and as a metal/harsh vocalist balanced with Elizabeth's knowledge and experience was so great. Also, it seems like they are genuinely friends which makes the back and forth wholesome

This will probably get buried, but I'll do my best to explain the soundscape shift when the funk drops in:
Will was right. There was a key change. But the engineering for the funk part of the song also changes dramatically: We move from a big reverb that is present for many instruments and aspects of the song to a much closer echo only for the vocals. The mix for the hi-hat in particular changes far more to be focused on the close mic. We get far less of the room mic in the drums here.
What makes this transition great is that we get the reverb bleed-off from the ambient, rhythmic synth that is helping fill in the back of the last half of the ambient bridge. It helps everything feel like it's rushed away and we're left with the bare essentials: Vessel's voice with echo, the funky guitar that is played very tight, and the hi-hat that is just somehow sexy!
What this results in is a huge change in how the compression works for the overall track. Because these sounds aren't a part of a wall of sound, they immediately get brought to the front. If you think about it, during the big choruses, we had rhythm guitars with open chord strumming, backing synth pads, layers of vocals, and plenty of drum accents as well as a room mix for the drums with more reverb and layering for the snare. Everything just sounds *huge!* When we bring it to its bare minimum in terms of soundscape, everything becomes present-- it becomes *intimate,* which is the point of this part of the song. We were in an ocean, and suddenly Vessel is right in front of our face, speaking right into our ears.
As the funk bars go, we get little hints back to bring back just a little bit of euphoria. Some layered "ohh-oh-woo-ohh!" and what sounds like a keyed synth playing alongside the funk guitar. With one of the last bars that goes, "You've got my body, flesh and bone" we're getting some more of that ambient. We're intimate, and yet being lifted into a place of euphoria as we start getting a taste of what brought us to that point to begin with sonically.
This song is an absolute masterclass in dynamics, both with writing and engineering. It's so well done!
This is perfect. To add one bit to it: The song also goes full circle with the lyrical line "You've got my body, flesh and bone". Because that line is also the very first vocal line in the song.
