  • In this video I prove once and for all that Splatoon 2 wasn't responsible for killing ARMS. I want more people to actually play this game instead of talking about why no one plays this game.
    I will grass root ARMS. Watch me. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ARMS!

      I think it’s because no esports player wants to play a game that relies on motion controls. Nintendo should have pushed this as a casual game and their other esports series (Smash Brothers and Splatoon) as the competitive esports they are.

      @ItsMeChair1 Arms is not reliant on motion controls, the button controls are much better in my opinion. The fact you think this, is a sign that Nintendo marketed the game very poorly. The game has much more depth than meets the eye and better control than shown off.

      Honestly I would've loved any kind of expansion of the weirder parts of the lore. Like, there's so much that's just.... there and mentioned one time then not at all? It's kinda like how Nintendo did the real plot and world building for Splatoon, but there was nothing to support that world building in ARMS itself

      @@BrettWilsHonestly if there’s one specific way Nintendo “abandoned” ARMS, it’s the story. Yeah, they never promised to give us a story mode, but they DID promise a graphic novel, and that got canned for unknown reasons. So there’s just no story. Nintendo didn’t give the devs the budget/time/etc for a story mode because it was gonna be supplemented with a comic, and then they didn’t make the comic.

      I hope Arms becomes like a mega man thing.
      While Mega Man 1 was very well-received, the sequel is almost universally considered far better on every front. The developers saw potential in the concept the original didn't quite live up to and expanded on the ideas established in the original.
      And Arms, likewise, has great potential! It's a unique concept and it does a lot of things really well already. One of the main complaints people had was that they got bored with it because it didn't have enough content/depth to sink their teeth into long-term.e it didn't have enough content/depth to sink their teeth into long-term.

      If I'm looking at Nintendo games that came out around launch, we're looking at Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, 1-2-Switch, and ARMS. ARMS was the lowest selling of those pre-established IPs, ontop of being a fighting game which typically sells lower unless you're Smash. Launch probably helped, but at the same time, it doesn't really matter because it.... Still sold. Sales are sales.

    It's always weird seeing videos with titles like "do ppl play ARMS in current year?" When i got the game 2023 first thing with my switch and i can count the number of times there were no ppl in the lobbies in party mode on half a hand. Even when i check it out late at night, there's still a bunch of Japanese players up at that time for me to go rounds with lol.
    Sure on ranked, its much less lively but i think its moreso that as with most fighting games, vast majority of the audience isnt looking to git gud and grind. And everyone who does fall under that camp are in too high ranks to be getting matched with brand new players or setting up private matches with friends. Even still, I've found and had good sets from time to time, so it's still got life there.
    It's a real fun game. Ever since 2017 it was my mosted wanted switch game and I'm glad i finally got it alongside my switch. Already have over 100 hrs while I've of course been enjoying other stuff. It's honestly probably Nintendo's coolest IP for me personally, and despite a loud few that like to paint it as a flop, i do see a lot of support for it in response by most comments. Its also surprisingly popular with families i noticed. Looking forward to more on the next system, cause I know Yabuki and co are itching to go back.

    I really love ARMS, I have played 340 hours of it, not that much, but more than many I bet. I have been playing alot recently. I think one of the biggest problems with ARMS was how it was marketed. The ads leaned too much on the motion controls and neither the ads nor the game describes the multiple hidden mechanics of ARMS. There is many features like restanding, ARMS (weapon) weight classes, Arm girth, and mono vs.flurry rushes that are not told or taught through the game. These mechanics (and more) are what adds depth to the game. The internet hasn't helped with this. Most reviews of ARMS say it is a shallow game. There are few sources for good info on ARMS but my personal favorites are ARMS Institute, ARMS study lab, and SNG. We need to bring this game back! Happy 7th Anniversary ARMS!

    I've actually really been meaning and trying to show people that Arms can be a very hype tournament game.
    People dont tend to notice every single thing that happens during a match cuz it just looks like 2 guys punching each other the best they can.
    But the amount of strategy and thinking going on from stage picking, to arm usage is very intricate.
    Having hype commentators that can explain to the viewer whats going on and even translate some of the hype with their own is the best way to show the community that Arms is more than you'd think.

I watched people call crash team racing nitro fueled a dead game once DLC ended... But the game got totally free battle passes for 9 months and the online community was thriving, and then it ended when the developers were finished putting out their ideas. I should also add that this game got a game award. It's perfectly acceptable for games to end and be over.

    I’m not gonna lie, ARMS lacked the nuance and variety that games like smash and Splatoon had, I think that’s what killed it first the broad population of the the fighting game community. There weren’t a lot of moves or options to spice up the gameplay, so many matches ended up looking and feeling the same. I hope the add more possible moves and technical nuance in the future.

    • @BrettWils
      @BrettWils  7 місяців тому +2

      Frankly, that’s objectively not true at all, at least in terms of nuance and variety.
      As far as moves or options, we’ve discovered tech, but I don’t think people really got into the labs with arms. That’s evident. I think it’s far from a solved game

    • @savagetomato464
      @savagetomato464 7 місяців тому +1

      @@BrettWils I’m sure you’re right, but techs buried that deep in the meta alone isn’t enough to fully carry an entire game. Smash has over 80 unique characters that all have their own completely unique moves and weights and entirely different playstyles to master, Splatoon has tons of expansive maps to learn and weapons with different sub and special abilities as well as the aspect of team cooperation and strategy. All arms has is 15 characters who honestly all feel the same to play outside of 1-2 unique moves and 15 maps most of which can be argued to feel samey and unambitious (I’ll give them the variety of ARMS however). Any casual specter that tries to watch a competitive arms tournament won’t see the team strategy of Splatoon, the lighting fast mind games and combos of smash, or the speed techs of Mario kart. The will simply see two people jumping, blocking and throwing punches from far away at each other, it just lacks to technical nuance to be anything more than that. Again, I’m sure it could get its footing if they add more options in the next game.

    • @ayyarrdiaz
      @ayyarrdiaz 7 місяців тому +2

      Thing is, there is nuance to the game, it’s characters and it’s ARMS. The only thing making people miss that information is the lack of actual clarity on the real stats of everything.
      If there was a statistics dropdown menu akin to Mario Kart, that could fix the preconceptions that everything and everyone is a “reskin.”
      ARMS’ gameplay in general is also very different than a normal fighter. The reason why the fighter’s abilities are all mostly movement based is because its identity is based on movement and positioning.
      High level play tends to be very close up and quick, too. Fighting to corner the other for an easy wailing.

    • @ayyarrdiaz
      @ayyarrdiaz 7 місяців тому

      Would I like to see a lot more characters? Story? Interesting stages and stage gimmicks? Extra movement options? Yes.
      And plenty of ARMS players and fans do, too. Attribute these extra options you speak of to the Rush meter, new, flashy moves to work towards and use while not having to change too much of the base gameplay

    • @savagetomato464
      @savagetomato464 7 місяців тому

      @@ayyarrdiaz Coming from someone who has over 100 hours in the game, I really don't think a dropdown menu would make characters feel that different. In other fighting games like smash, characters have so many different moves and abilities and meters and frame datas ect that it genuinely changes the way I play with every character, If I played Pikachu for 50 hours that doesn't suddenly mean I'll be any good with bayonetta. In arms, the only thing that matters to the average player is the 1-2 abilities that the char has and if theyre a heavy (mechanica, m brass, mas mummy) or not. Even though I mainly play Helix, I could still pick up any character in the game no matter how little Ive played them and be near equally as skilled as normal. If they just added more options in fights then it could be fixable, even better if they made them player specific, like giving each fighter a unique rush attack, or having each fighter punch in certain patterns (Misango only does hook punches, twintelle only does uppercuts, ect.). But as of right now to non-comp players, the game just feels like wii boxing but you get one random ability depending onj who ur playing, it just needs more man.

It just doesn't have as much to do as Splatoon does, it feels more restrictive with its locked in camera and simple circle stages. I think the reason ARMS didn't take off is because it didn't have any meaningful content for people who didn't want to play the online matches - and for me, I bounced off it because playing the singleplayer that did exist, I realized that I fundamentally didn't understand how to play, and was only winning because the ai was taking it easy on me. Once I realized that I never picked it up again - despite wanting to really like it.

    • @BrettWils

      For a casual audience, yeah this is it. But when it comes to the competitive audience, that’s who I’m really talking about, that doesn’t really apply though

    The only problem with the game is the ai on higher difficulties especially in grand prix. They're practically on ultra instinct and some fights can feel unwinnable... *Cough! Cough!* Mechanica... *Cough! Cough!*
    But the cast is very wacky and the mechanics they each have all make them unique in some way. Twintell with her hover and "witch time", max brass being spring man on steroids, master mummy with his healing on guard, it's all so good!

    People have a wrong interpretation of what a "dead game" is. Just because *you* don't play the game anymore doesn't mean that no one is playing. I haven't touched Smash Ultimate in about a year, but that doesn't mean that nobody is playing Smash Ultimate.
    Some people need an incentive to keep playing a game, for example, timed events or new content. But a lot of players stick around long after the game stops being actively supported and in development.

    • @BrettWils
      @BrettWils  7 місяців тому +3

      I think it's because of how things are perceived because of social media and YT? Like, if no one is talking about it, it doesn't exist. That said, definitely way less people actively playing ARMS competitively than there could be

    • @maxrelax5940

      @@BrettWils splatoon 1 definitely wasnt a dead game during splatoon 2s lifespan. sure it took slightly longer to get into games but you could always find a match under 10 minutes. in my experience it was an average of 4 or less minutes. splatoon 1 was very much so alive (maybe its because im playing on australian/japanese servers but i assume its the same with splatoon 2 too.

  • @thebe_stone_MC

    the problem wasn't the lack of updates, or the fact splatoon 2 existed, the problem is that it gets boring for most people if they play it for more than a few hours. the problem is that the game just isn't very fun. It's not our fault we dont like the game, it's the game's fault for not being very good.

    • @BrettWils
      @BrettWils  7 місяців тому +24

      That’s a totally fair opinion to have, but I’m not trying to convince you that it’s fun. I’m trying to convince the people who do enjoy the game, and want people to play the game, and to be taken seriously to put their money where their mouth is instead of talking about how no one plays the game

      If you don't like the game, I understand. But I think that the game has a lot more depth than is presented or told by the game. I recommend checking out the UA-cam channel "ARMS Tips and Tournaments" it really delves into some lesser known mechanics that make the game a lot more fun in my opinion.

      I think it just needed more robust single-player content. Even Mortal Kombat these days has better-fleshed-out single-player modes. You can play ARMS for a few hours and see basically everything.

    • @thesavageone8685

      Nah, people bought it. Initial sales numbers were really good. Beat out Tekken 7 (launched one week apart) in Japan in the first week of sales, and that’s WILD when you put it into perspective.
      But content wasn’t there other than it being a funny meme game and people didn’t continue buying it. To really get ARMS content, you had to be *deep* into the community.

    I’m still playing ARMS in my free time and this video shows how ARMS should still be alive and kicking but isn’t. I firmly believe that ARMS is so underrated as a game and should be a lot more popular so, thank you for showing how it is not and why it is so un popular.

    It's sad because I think its just that 3d arena fighters in general struggle, at least in america. I might be wrong about that but that's kind of the feeling I get, the fighting game community is fairly traditional; the only departure being platform fighters, which is all solely because of super smash bros. I love arms though, I wish it got more recognition from gamers, Nintendo did a great job with it.
