    Actually I've been probably putting too much pressure on my cheeks due to people talking about cheek strength - your simple explanation of the cheeks only keeping the mouth closed was such an "aha" moment. I haven't hit the high notes yet, outside of "kettle squeaks" - but this has taken some tension out of my mouth and made the instrument so much more enjoyable to play. Thanks John (Jon?)

      Laklander wow that's terrific I'm glad that you've figured out a component. For me high notes are not really a must have. Music is a must-have, there's plenty of professional players in every kind of music that don't have ridiculous high chops. As long as you're able to play music and have fun doing it that's what counts. Best, Jon

    Great video John, really appreciate your tips. The tongue arch you demonstrated really helps me. I'm currently a Junior in high school, top band and Section Leader. I go back and watch your videos frequently to really get the in-depth explanation of the basics you give. Keep up the great videos!

      Thanks so much for the Props. Congratulations on understanding that reviewing any material to include my humble offerings will produce greater understanding of the subject matter. You have proven at a young age
      that you have an intellect that is quite astute. This just might direct you to peruse a profession much more lucrative than the meager earnings of a professional musician. Study hard my friend and you will do well no matter the future career choice you make. Best, Jon

      Rufftips Thank you so much! Your videos really do help break down basic and advanced playing. I've recently been struggling with too much tension in my face, not necessarily my lips. It's something I've been trying to work out, and it takes time. Can be very frustrating at times.

    • @Rufftips
      @Rufftips  7 років тому +1

      Realize all the tension you need to play trumpet is the same amount you would use to spit a small seed off the tip of your tongue. Try simulating that then playing a G in the staff with the same feeling. Hope this helps. Keep at it stay relaxed and good luck. Best, Jon

    Could be my imagination but it seems like when my chops get tired I cannot fire the tongue to get to hire register .... I must be doing something wrong because I agree with you on the muscle part, it doesn’t have to be that strong....I’ve been experimenting with a more puckered approach that may take some tension out of my mouth so it doesn’t tire so quickly....

    • @Rufftips
      @Rufftips  5 років тому +1

      Paul Dance The proper aperture or setting for the lips to vibrate in the upper register is necessary for us to obtain these notes. The combination of everything that we are doing gives us the results. I think it’s hard to pinpoint the exact reason for fatigue but I believe it is an element of fatigue. This is why maintain that having proper mechanics and being relaxed is the key to being able to sustain a longer process. The more you can make it second nature to play in that register the longer you will be on the play there. Best of luck, Jon

    Hey Rufftips I really enjoy all of your videos! Since marching band season is approaching quickly I have a few questions. I would love to share a video of your opinions on marching band playing technique with range, intonation and clarity. I'm going to be a junior at Amherst Steele high school and since I'm now an upper classmen I would love to show what the younger classes can achieve. With some dedication. I would love if you could make a video. Thanks!

      Brianna, I am super busy at the moment so a video will not happen for a couple of weeks. I am not sure exactly what you are looking for but I can address the basic concepts that I think are universal. These are key to making music connect with the audience and express emotion no matter what group you are playing in. When I put it up I will be sure to let you know. Best. Jon

    Hello Jon. Thanks for great and helpful postings. How do you practice the compression? Do you use the yoga complete breathing? I would like to learn how to compress the air. Do you have an exercise or an advice how to practice that? Best regards.

    • @Rufftips
      @Rufftips  7 років тому +1

      Xela I don't use any specific exercise it's a conceptual thing. When I need more support I bear down by tightening and create more energy in my midsection. It is the same kind of action as if I was preparing to take a punch in my midsection. The more support I need the more I tighten that area. This is something that is difficult to write about, read about or watch a simple video and put into action. You flex your midsection will keeping your shoulders relax your throat open and then support the upper register with this surge that's happening in your midsection. This is about as concise as I can possibly be. Best, Jon

    Hi Jon, i love your videos! im having trouble with a break around high e and after this break playing gets easy but it feels quite different. do your high notes feel the same in all registers? i noticed after the slight embouchure shift my attacks are much harder. did you have similar problems are am i on the wrong path?.... thanks and keep those gr8 videos up!

    • @Rufftips
      @Rufftips  7 років тому +2

      When you go past your break it certainly can feel different. The normal slotting we feel when we play is not there above the break. So this is where we use greater control to maintain pitch and place the note correctly in tune. To get these notes above our break certainly can feel easier as iff we are using less effort than a note a 3rd lower. Now when you say your attacks are much harder after a slight embouchure shift. I do not know what this shift is where or why you are doing it or if it is the cause of the attack issue. This is impossible to diagnose without much more information. Ideally you want to have the same embouchure all the way up and down your register. Do your best to connect your register with the same set or embouchure. This may take some time to figure out but in the long run you will be much better off. Javier Gonzalez said his break was at an E. He used lead pipe playing to figure out how to control his embouchure to create these notes that did not exist before. You would have to reference his video with Bill Bing for more information on that approach.
      ua-cam.com/video/0ztd0qmASUM/v-deo.html
      Octaves are what worked for me but I think the lead pipe is incredible to learn control. Best, Jon

      Rufftips thank you so much for your answer! I tried leadpipe buzzing before but it was very hard and mostly uncontrolled but seeing javier gonzalez' playing and your advice, i think i should give it one more try :) I just wanna thank you for all your help that did make the trumpet for me and im sure for many others a funny Journey again, instead of a pure struggle. Best wishes and i hope for more Videos incoming ;)

    John, do you ever play trombone or euphonium? Hpe does it affect your trumpet playing? Thanks!

    • @Rufftips
      @Rufftips  7 років тому +1

      I do not play trombone as it is the devils instrument. Baritone or bass cornet I do not play either… Just joking around. Nope don’t play low brass. I went to the University of Hawaii on a French horn scholarship but stopped doubling on Horn when I turned 25. If you double on low or tenor brass you will have to deal with different embouchures. I know a couple of players that double on Bone and they have to devote time to each instrument each day and they have to learn how to go back and forth during the same practice session. It is not something I recommend but it is not my place to discourage anyone from doubling. Doubling creates a host of hurtles that can be challenging to overcome. If you can successfully double you become a valuable commodity. There are some interesting products, here is one of them. www.chasonsmusic.com/trombone-to-trumpet-hybrid

    How much compression is necessary and how much compression is too much to play the high notes? I am a beginner and when I practice to play high notes, I start sweating after 15 minutes or so and I have to activate the air conditioner.

    • @Rufftips
      @Rufftips  3 роки тому

      Mertol Göksoy I think of the compression component is energy being moved upward from the midsection. I like to use this phrase to identify this energy direction, poop up. When we go to the bathroom we find ourselves moving energy downward LOL. We don’t necessarily understand exactly how all this works we simply know what to do. When playing in the upper register we have to provide your support and air control. The support mechanism is the action that I referred to as poop up. The control mechanism is a learned mechanism of a small steady airstream. I discuss this in several videos. Another way to think of this is that you are a martial artist and you were going to do a sparring match. Your midsection is flexed but it leaves the rest of your body able to move with great ease. Another words a solid core The energize is what you’re trying to do. Best, Jon

  • @Lientz

    so what would be the difference between pinching and creating compression?

    • @ethanbrandt3692
      @ethanbrandt3692 7 років тому +1

      Lientz I'm not an expert by any means but I think of pinching as when you tighten up your lip and mouth muscles. This eventually gets to the point where you simply can't get the air through because it's such a tight hole, also in my experience I have much less endurance pinching than using air compression. Air compression is about forcing the air out of your lungs faster (not sure if faster is the right word but I'll go with it) with your diaphragm and abdominal muscles

    • @ethanbrandt3692
      @ethanbrandt3692 7 років тому +1

      in short, pinching tightens lips, air compression tightens the core

    • @Rufftips
      @Rufftips  7 років тому

      Pinching creates a host of issues. The first is obstruction of a relaxed buzz. The next it unwanted tension that creates resistance in the expulsion of the air. This video might help you understand the air component. ua-cam.com/video/U4GyVG6nEsI/v-deo.html
      Compression is created in the lungs and the mouth. The squeeze in the torso creates pressure in the lungs. This pressure compresses the air and creates the energy needed to focus the air in the mouth. Our tongue is key in focusing this air and supports the vibration in the lips. The vibration of the lips excites the corresponding frequency in the air column in the trumpet. Your concept of compression is not about air compression but about lip
      compression. I have never talk about lip compression. In several videos I pull the mouthpiece away from my lips to expose the position they are in. They have never been compressed or pinched. I explain that I think forward and not back. Never do I state to press them together to create compression or to compress them to play higher. Best, Jon

    is it okay if your mouth piece doesn't go in the center of your lips when you play?

    • @Rufftips
      @Rufftips  7 років тому

      If your airstream naturally is off center, playing off center might be the best natural position for your embrasure. Check this video. ua-cam.com/video/nuyiyc2Pi7Y/v-deo.html
