So amazing to see the progress being made on the Big Boy! I believe we all are beginning to feel like the expectant parents waiting for the rebirth of this amazing machine. I loved touring the round house, and looking at all of the other projects that are currently underway. Quite a fascinating trip! :D
It's a dream come true to see a Big Boy being refurbished for many years of use. And it's not just a quickie to get it to operational for a short period of time. Rail Fans can't thank Union Pacific enough for their commitment to not just preserve the steam locomotives, but to keep them operational for many years to come. I hold a very high respect for UP. And that's for more than their steam heritage program. Keep the great videos coming Toy Man! They inspired me to take my wife to the Strasburg Railroad, Pennsylvania RR Museum, B+O RR Museum, Virginia Museum of Transportation, the O. Winston Link Museum and the Age of Steam Round House, all in the past 2 years, I've been able to convert her to a steam rail fan and enthusiast. If her enthusiasm continues to grow, I'll have no difficulty justifying the expenditure to travel out west and see many of steam locomotives and railroads I've been a fan of for many years :-) Gee, should have thought of this years ago. Looking forward to new updates from you on 4014. Thanks again!
Great views, Stan! Thanks for taking us along with you and Karyn on the grand tour inside UP's Cheyenne roundhouse. There's some fascinating stuff to see there. -from Tom Pilling
I am with you, for a diesel locomotive, the E, and I am going to add, the F units are what a diesel should look like. They just have the impression of moving, even when standing still. Simply the most beautiful of all diesels, imo. Fantastic screwing around. Always look forward Dale, to yours and Karyn's adventures. Each video is always a treat. Never boring!!!! :)
rohnerw thanks! As a kid I had a chance to go for a ride in an F9, my uncle worked for Penn Central and when he would show up in Salt Lake the UP people or even the Rio Grande people showed courtesy to other railroad people and someone showing up with the nephew could get away with just about anything. Was truly amazing to see the inner workings of those F units! I've just never cared that much for the open walkway diesels they all sort of look the same to me, but ho man the streamliners!
I'm with you guys there - I was born too late to get to enjoy them in regular service but the old ATSF Super Chief streamliners just look SO right. www.museumoftheamericanrailroad.org/portals/0/F-Unit-@-Natl-Train-Day-08--1-RESIZE_350px.jpg
Toy Man Television : BORING ? Are you kiddin' us ? Amongst all the train channels that I've seen on UA-cam, YOURS, is the most PROFESSIONALY , produced. All the great entertaining narrations, the music, Plus...... So that's what that diesel model is called.....The "E" Series. She's so pretty, unlike today's locomotives. I tried over, and over, to find out more about THIS particular Deasil locomotive, on UA-cam, but to no avail, 'cause I didn't know the particular model's name. Well, you good folks, have finally solved the MYSTERY for me. I accidentally ran across your channel while researching "steam" locomotives, of long ago. AND BOY I AM SURE GLAD I FOUND YOU ! I am looking forward to more notifications.🚂. P.S. Just an as side. I don't know about you folks.......But when I look into my rear view mirrors, and I notice eighteen wheelers, gaining up on me "fast"...... Boy, do I get the HEE BEE GEE BEES 🚛 ! In our state, those 18 wheelers love to cruise right in the center lanes on the freeway... and not the same speed as the rest of the traffic... Like "What's with that?" So.... this creates a situation where other vehicles are trying to pass them on the left, and the right! Then... without too much warning... the semi will just want to change lanes! Every once in a while.. I feel just like a soccer ball! At least in Wyoming.. those 18 wheelers keep to the right! We really do have a lot of fun making these videos, and very happy that folks are enjoying them. Take care, and thanks for watching! :D
Great vid Dale. I have a VHS tape of the Challenger when it came to Ontario Ca way back when Filmed it on Cajon . When 4014 was at the Rail Giants in Pomona one could actually climb into the boiler . I made a comment to a volunteer saying wouldn't be nice to see it run again. At that time it was a fantasy. Now, can't wait to see come back.
David Tucker for years people kept saying that that was one that could run again. All sorts of talk about 4014 being back on the rails. No one ever took that stuff seriously but it was fun to fantasize. Go figure
Thanks!! More coming too. We are sitting here worn out, too much screwing around! In the last 3 weeks we have traveled from SLC to Rock Springs where we were snowed in for 48 hours, Cheyenne, for 2 days, straight to California central coast for the Best of the West Antique Machinery Show, (the 200th show and WAY better than the name implies) North to Big Trees, south to LA, back to SLC for a few hours to deal with business here and on to the Rat Fink Reunion. Hum......
Toy Man Television Dale & Karyn: I am sorry to inform you that you will not be able to enter the 2017 Couch Potato Contest! Keep up the massive screwing around! I wait impatiently for the next exciting show! Cheers & Cheese to the Rat Fink from Southern California! ;)
..... And Boy was it!! Getting side tracked in Rock Springs for 2 days.. and wondering if there would even BE a Depot Days show to go to in Cheyenne.... Well... All's well that ends well. And this certainly did!! :D
Super show Dale. I really enjoy your screwing around! Seriously, your education shows through with some of the best videos on the internet. Wishing you and Karyn a great summer, and safe travels.
That "Intriguing" passenger car is the Concession/souvenir car "Reed Jackson". They usually use it on UP excursion trains, though it hasn't been used on any trains since the CFD train in 2013. This is most likely because it is being worked on, as seen in the video. Hope this helps!
Yes! Beautiful! The last group of clouds from the storm that had us snowed in at Rock Springs, Wyoming... This time... Heading west on I-80 toward the Sisters.. Spectacular! Thanks for watching!! :D
No Name as a kid my uncle took my to the shops, he was a technician for pen central, and UP opened the doors and let us screw around with a F9. To this day my favorite "modern" locomotive. Dang. They just look wonderful!!!! And sound and even smell wonderful.
I'm so thankful for this, and the UP crews for preserving these magnificent machines. You haven't lived unless you see these beasts in person and hearing them breathe and take off. :)
Col. Angus I took a skeptical friend out decades ago to see the Challenger when it first hit the rails. He tried desperately to remain unimpressed, but the first time it came rumbling by at 60 miles an hour shaking the ground the look on his face! Eyeballs like saucers!
i need to get my butt down to cheyenne sometime but my bucket list is incredibly clogged with places to visit including the Lake Superior Railroad Musuem, The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, The Strasburg Railroad, the Kettle Valley Railway, and even the Welsh Highland Railway in the UK (but that one is for much later)
Wow I'm glad your video showed up in my suggestions list. This is really well produced and very interesting. Nicely done!! Plus, as a train geek, I loved the content as well.
I really hope when the Big Boy and the Challenger are fully operational they'll do a double head with them. They were actually built to work together hauling freight over the Wasatch mountains. That would be an amazing sight to see.
Hey, Jack! So glad to see these locomotives and train cars being kept and preserved! The next best things are the round houses.. So many are only partly there.... The 180 round house in Evanston Wyoming is there... but being restored! I also love seeing the depots restored as well!! :D
Just a few small corrections I noticed: UP currently has somewhere between 40-50 passenger cars. UP 838 is the actual 'parts car' sitting in Cheyenne. 833 is on display in Ogden.
Schon Norris hi! Yeah they have about 40 or 50 restored cars that they can call out from Omaha, I went to their website and they have well over 100 cars on the roster, but half of those are unrestored used in some sort of maintenance work or something like that.
Great to see he UP is holding on to its heritage both with there equipment and some reminants of its great faciltiy in chyanne. Truly the hight of steam early desial tech.
Very well done! Being in Wisconsin the UP doesn't run its heritage stuff up here too much but i have seen the Challenger and the 844 run through here. The Bigboy will be awesome when its running hope it makes an excursion though the upper midwest.
That is all really good stuff. The big steam is out of our realm of thinking these days but the E units are what I grew up with. Rock Island Line was less than 1/8 mile behind my families home. I just loved those locos.
I enjoy all of your shows. I found your first Friday show "Look at what we found" interesting. But I cannot find the second episode from this week. Can you tell me where it is?
The Friday shows are now and then. I have so much footage of random roadside distractions and funny and fun stuff. But as I get to them I’m putting them up. 2 have gotten away from me so I have made them into Sunday’s shows. One on a Frys store being attacked by. martians. And a trip to Universal Studios to watch them set fire to some stuff
HI Toy Man and Lady 😎 : I am please that Union Pacific has this project, bringing back railroad history. Well done tour for all your viewers. Cool seeing Ed Dickens, doing a show and tell for the visitors and more to come. • Cheers from The Detroit Mackinac Railway • Pronounced: (mac-in-aw) 🚂
I feel fortunate to have been invited back into the back areas of the round house.. To actually see the boiler of the Big Boy that close! Ed and his wife are very nice, and it was a pleasure to meet and talk with them. I really learned a lot of information. I believe it is very important to preserve these historical trains... For us... and future generations. :D
Morning! Yes, way more from Ed, what a great and informed person. Walking encyclopedia on all things train. And UP. When UP hired him they really got it right!!! The perfect person for the job.
again a wonderful program. I do have one correction though, 833 is located in Ogden. It is UP 838 that is the parts Locomotive that is in Cheyenne. By the way, under the art of "Screwing around", the photo with my comments is my MT14L exUP 2424 which I travel around with the NARCOA (North American Railcar Operators Association www.narcoa.org). I will be running this one on the Coos Bay Railroad in August from Vaughn, Oregon to Coos Bay, Oregon and back. Model RR Research trip. However the IRS won't let me write it off.
Hi, I’m going to be visiting Denver and Cheyenne (from Australia, en route by train from San Francisco to Chicago) next May and wondered how I might arrange a visit to the UP roundhouse, if that’s at all possible. It’s been a dream of mine since I was a child (I’m 66 now and not getting any younger). Btw, always love to catch your latest UA-cam videos. Hope you can help, regards, Richard.
Almost impossible by working with the UP. Go the one of the clubs, they volunteer there and have open houses like once a month. And could perhaps just walk in.. Look up the Sherman Hill Model Railroad Club. shermanhillrails.org/ Or go to the Cheyenne visitors site. www.cheyenne.org/listing/union-pacific-steam-shop-tours/1223/
In reading your comments you guys HAVE been busy. Loved this episode all to heck. There are other You Tube focusses on the Big Boy. You two give us just the right amount of glitz with your ALWAYS excellent editing and narration. Always enjoy my Sunday morning with Dale and Karyn. This weekend we are privy to the air show of the Winged Warrior's Project. In the morning then the evening hours we get strafed about every hour by a restored, vintage B-17. How cool is that? Sometimes the B-24 joins them with the two fighter planes for the evening salute. I believe that is what the program is called. If you are a vet of WW11, and flew one of these machines you are allowed a tribute ride, free, I believe. I would guess that's if health will allow. My own Dad would of been 100, earlier this year. A vet of Pearl Harbor, 1941. Continue your, "Massive effort of Screwing Around" Jeanne and I are enjoying this series. My Bride puts up with my trains but you folks make it breath and live. Your presentations make it retainable. Thanks! Greg and Jeanne.
HI!! We just covered the Best of the West Antique Machinery Show, near you! Blasted into town in a cloud of dust and right back out. BUT what a show!!! It will be #200. WOW!!!!!
I went to the steam shop tour the crew of the restoration told us not to give any information or to take any pictures of 4014 but I could take a picture of 844 and I was quite surprised that they had a snow locomotive
Odd about photos. They may have been in the middle of doing something that they didn’t want seen until they presented it on their web site or UA-cam channel. They are super people but need to keep the message clear.
@@ToyManTelevision I have an unfortunate update from Ed. This was only leaked this year even though supposedly this was a rumor all these years until confirmed in May. This is what Ed said,“Hello friends. A quick update regarding the UP 3985. Information has been released as far back as May of this year regarding its current status...Which is…officially retired. As mentioned during that time there are no plans to restore the UP 3985. Having fired and operated that locomotive many, many thousands of miles this is not the news that you or I want to hear. But I feel most understands having two steam locomotives on the roster has historically been the norm of the Union Pacic. This is still the case. As time permits we may release additional information on exactly why that locomotive has not operated since 2010. Many years of hard operation has resulted in the locomotive requiring a complete frame up restoration just as the big boy received. Thank you friends, Ed.”
I buy those tracks from Smartsound. I really like them because I can change them so easily. They’re broken out by measure and by phrase. Moreover of the recorded instrument by instrument. So I can put in a six measure phrase of one part of the music take out the drums turn up the volume on the bass and then add three measures at the end to cause it to end exactly where I want it to. It’s genius! But the music itself is based on classical pieces of music and popular music reworked into something that sounds familiar but is not a violation of copyright
I loved seeing 5511 in their shops! Personally, I would love to see that engine in a museum on public display, as it's my favorite UP machine, and they don't seem to be doing much with it. If they do use it for something, such as (relatively slow) mainline trains, that would be fun! Great shots too, and the narration is great.
RockyRailroad Animation it seems that that is their goal for that locomotive, I suppose there's a good deal of debating going on behind the scenes, but no one seems to have a mind to run it again. But if a major museum wanted to display it and take really good care of it, they'd have them selves a locomotive
Toy Man Television Certainly! It is an interesting machine, and being a slower, more powerful locomotive, it could potentially work well as a museum locomotive, similar to how 1630 is used at the Illinois Railway Museum.
I’d love to see 5511 be restored and run on the plains. Not many 2-10-2’s are around and I don’t think any run. Would be nice to see one run under steam again.
Be something. And never say never. But at this point UP is spending millions to keep 2 locos on the rails. And they are happy with that. I'd like to see 5511 in a museum, INSIDE. So people can see and enjoy it.
You know I think it might help to know your back story, what got you started in what ever industry to make films and in a chronological order. You present so well and edit videos like you have been doing this for years. I found you because of the 4014, it was parked in front of a Sunkist engine that my Grandpa had once riden to LA back and forth from the packing house, he and dad and I all climbed aboard the UP 4014 at the fairgrounds and commented to me that she'd never run again. It tickles me to no end that she is being restored. So please do a story of your History in films!
Hi. We try to never be boring so we avoid my story!! I see a film that's months long with no pee breaks. Ouch... HOWEVER, take a look at these. Sort of smacks into the story: ua-cam.com/video/Rf8JBYp1HsE/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/RVP2QhdDVgc/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/MUOBv4pgca8/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/J4CQ83teIME/v-deo.html As these have few views I guess this assume it's because most people do find them a bit boring. But take a look. I find them interesting, but I have been known to just sit and watch paint dry,
In aircraft lingo, the parts locomotive would be called a "Hanger Queen," always needing one more part to get it airborne, until another part gets scavenged to keep another plane flying. I guess it would be a "Shop Queen" or "Roundhouse Queen." Kind of like the guy with two or three Plymouth Super Bees/Dodge Daytonas sitting in his yard, gradually becoming one with Mother Earth. When asked if he'd consider selling one or all, he replies, "No, I'm gonna restore one of them one of these days." The fact that he's been saying that for the past 20 years, and he's now 75 years old doesn't matter. "One of these days... " "Happy talk keep talking happy talk, Talk about things you're going to do..." -- From South Pacific
tom7601 isn't it amazing how many people are like that, I understand their vision everyone wants to restore the pile of rust out in the yard, but so often those things just sit there and until they are utterly destroyed
Nope. Well not in the foreseeable future anyway. The truth of the matter is that when 3985 came up for rebuild it was determined that it would cost an awful lot to do it and they could actually restore a Big boy for less. And that started them looking for a restorable big boy. So really 4014 as a replacement for 3985. 3985 has some issues and it’s Boiler vessel. And on a boiler that size those are not insignificant problems. Anyway never say never. Anything can be restored! So perhaps someday!
We’ll sort of. Never say never.. but it costs about 3 million to restore one of these. They were planning to rebuild the 3985 but for less they realized they could restore a Big Boy. The goal being to get back to two locomotives. In reality as long as 844 is running that’s all corporate wants. But the rail fans wanted to see 3985 back and they didn’t want bad blood over that. But adding more locomotives? We’ll never say never. But not any time soon.
@@ToyManTelevision My dad and I have collectively #13 Challenger diecast kits in which two are factory new all from the 60s and 3 big boy kits in which 2 are factory new I enjoy working on them it's kinda fun. I enjoyed the video when you were here in Portland Oregon and if I remember right you also visited Astoria. Question when you both saw the big boy what was the color of the lettering on the cab and tender I'd like to know because when I order the decals I will get the right color. Thank you Love the videos have a great Thanksgiving and a very Merry ⛄
sorry to ask but, I don't who to ask as the museum said they don,t know. what I want to know is what steam loco was on display at the science museum inphilidelphia in 1975?.
Was there in 2019 chasing the Big Boy back to WYOMING Did see the tenders parked in the yard Would have gone back in 2020 BUT.....................................................................................................................Hopefully 2023
They have 2 water tenders made from Turbine tenders. And about 3 4? more that were used as water cars back in the 80's. But they never leave without 2. No water tanks left out there!
darnel washoe The firebox got too thin and dangerous and needs to be rebuilt. At that time they didn't know if they could rebuild it but they just finished putting a new firebox in 844 and they now know exactly what to do therefore as soon as 4014 is finished challenger will be next
great vid just wasted the Stanta Barbra vid also ... been working on updating the national Roundhouse data base past few weeks over 1000 locations in the USA and thats prob like only 10 % the most i have is over 200 locations for Illinois only cuz they have great historical coverage
I fee a little bummed because I wish the spare parts Locomotive UP 838 would undergo cosmetic restoration. But also I hope UP 5511 will one day get a home at a museum.
What Ed said here, “Hello friends. A quick update regarding the UP 3985. Information has been released as far back as May of this year regarding its current status...Which is…officially retired. Hi. Yup it’s been a long road. But 6 years ago when 3985 was in need of a standard inspection and rebuilding they found a lot wrong. Big problem was leaking between two of the boiler sections. A proper rebuilding would cost about 4 million. Give or take. But the plan at that time was go for it. But the obvious question cane up, wouldn’t that be cheeper to just get a different locomotive? Like a Big Boy!!? And the answer was yes. Much cheaper. And so they went looking. At the time 3985 was still listed as being rebuilt. Even though it was obvious 4014 was going to replace 3985. I guess UP didn’t see any reason to retire 3985 at the time. But... so about 2 years ago they rethought the 3985 rebuild. I assume they didn’t want a big announcement about that until 4014 was finished. But the actual retirement was about 6 months before the May 10 events.
@@ToyManTelevision Hello thank you for responding to me. Keep up the great family friendly, fun content. When Ed say back in 2015 Union Pacific bought all of these tooling and parts for the 844, 4014, 3985 and even a spare set. What I do not understand is that why did UP spend money on tooling and parts for the 3985 if they were planning on to retire it? Plus of course everyone has a budget. However weren't they planning to restore the 3985 anyway after the Big Boy. I understand everything costs something. However for how they take their time on projects won't UP spread the money out on their budget per year since they can only restore one locmoitve at at time and they can run no more than two at a time? The suppose plan I heard was to have two operating locomotives avail be while another one is being restored. So why didn't Ed and UP as an organization announce to the public on the UP website or Steam club page about 3985 being retired. Yet why did Ed leak it only to his friends on his personal Facebook page back in January? Plus no one knew about it last year until January of this year. Thank you and God bless you!
Jack Chatfield I think that in time many many locomotives will be restored, because there’s only so many of them and every year they are more and more people wanting to get involved with restoration of them. I’ll bet we do see good things happen with 5511. Not soon, but at some point. And if someone wants to get a go fund me thing going, after 3985 is restored they may be willing to return it to the high iron. But I’ll be surprised if 15 years from now it’s still in the roundhouse. But you never know.
Great video. I'm with you the E units are what I think of when you diesel locomotive. I grew up in Blaine Washington in the 60s and 70s and Great Northern's main line ran along the north shore of Drayton Harbor to the Canadian Border. So now and then I would go down the street and watch the trains... we were two blocks from the bluff that over looked the tracks and the harbor. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. Kriss
Kriss Femmpaws we too love those. A GP7 is the same age yet looks (to my eye) like any modern diesel. As I look at my models they are all steam, about 100 of those, E and F and the like, about 30 of those and one GP 7 in O scale. WP paint and cool. Never been out of the box though. Hum.
Railroading can be an expensive hobby... But enjoying them for their engineering and beauty doesn't cost a lot... Most of the time. When I hit my mid teens I got into aviation and kinda put railroading on the back shelf... I still enjoy the history and all of that that comes with it. Many times you have to stop and ask yourself how did they do that! You have to wonder how much knowledge has been lost with the "progress" we have seen. A case in point, a group was restoring a Messerschmitt Bf 109 and sent the engine to Rolls Royce. Rolls told them "What ever you do, don't break the crank! Because we can't make another we don't know how." The 109s engine is a copy of the Rolls Royce Merlin that's been turned up side down.
So amazing to see the progress being made on the Big Boy! I believe we all are beginning to feel like the expectant parents waiting for the rebirth of this amazing machine. I loved touring the round house, and looking at all of the other projects that are currently underway. Quite a fascinating trip! :D

The Big Boy and The Challenger are available in HO Scale. Even in HO Scale they are massive locomotives.
Great video! Thank You for sharing this!!
I grew up in Cheyenne. Left in 1966 for college and took all of this for granted for 18 years.
Amazing shop!!!
Thanks again for another railroad tour.😃
Patrick O'Guinn you are quite welcome!!
Can't wait to see more video's of the depot days!
Your videos are always the coolest 😎 my compliments sir and thank you for sharing awesome video
Thanks gunny! So much fun getting out there too!
Thanks a lot for your videos!
love both of you. great video.
Like your videos, keep up the good work!
Heading back to Cheyenne soon. Few weeks.
great job thank you for another Amazing Adventure
Thanks!! Karyn ad I love digging onto stuff, doing fun things, and making the show.
That "Intriguing" passenger car is the Concession/souvenir car "Reed Jackson". They usually use it on UP excursion trains, though it hasn't been used on any trains since the CFD train in 2013. This is most likely because it is being worked on, as seen in the video. Hope this helps!
YES!! It's in the "old" colors, brown and yellow. I wanted to steal it but it would not fit in my camera bag. Just beautiful!!
Amazing! Thanks! :D
Really good video show....:). Love the shot at 13:55!!
Yes! Beautiful! The last group of clouds from the storm that had us snowed in at Rock Springs, Wyoming... This time... Heading west on I-80 toward the Sisters.. Spectacular! Thanks for watching!! :D
It's called "The Sisters" hills on I 80. Just east of Evanston.
Oh, I love the old E9's and F7's!!! Those UP E9's are gorgeous!!!
No Name as a kid my uncle took my to the shops, he was a technician for pen central, and UP opened the doors and let us screw around with a F9. To this day my favorite "modern" locomotive. Dang. They just look wonderful!!!! And sound and even smell wonderful.
Toy Man Television Marvelous!
You two are a match made in heaven! Train lovers!
Eyeballs like saucers!
haha would pay a lot to just see it lmao
i need to get my butt down to cheyenne sometime but my bucket list is incredibly clogged with places to visit including the Lake Superior Railroad Musuem, The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, The Strasburg Railroad, the Kettle Valley Railway, and even the Welsh Highland Railway in the UK (but that one is for much later)
Great video!
Thanks!!!!
love your railway history episodes
Planning one on a 3 foot mining line near here. The Alta.
Wow I'm glad your video showed up in my suggestions list. This is really well produced and very interesting. Nicely done!! Plus, as a train geek, I loved the content as well.
6:20 is that an N&W Y class?
I really hope when the Big Boy and the Challenger are fully operational they'll do a double head with them. They were actually built to work together hauling freight over the Wasatch mountains. That would be an amazing sight to see.
Bet it happens. About 2025 though...
@@ToyManTelevision Well I guess you're happy that you were wrong! Awesome video too. Thanks for sharing!
The challenger was retired
Great that these fine locomotives are being saved...and there is a place for them to be displayed! Thanks for making them alive! :) Jack
Hey, Jack! So glad to see these locomotives and train cars being kept and preserved! The next best things are the round houses.. So many are only partly there.... The 180 round house in Evanston Wyoming is there... but being restored! I also love seeing the depots restored as well!! :D
Hi Jack!
Toy Man 📺
Just a few small corrections I noticed:
UP currently has somewhere between 40-50 passenger cars.
Nice work, as always. love the backstories:; years in service manufacturer, and the videos to go with stories are wonderful. Thanks. (subscribed)
Thanks!
Very well done! Being in Wisconsin the UP doesn't run its heritage stuff up here too much but i have seen the Challenger and the 844 run through here. The Bigboy will be awesome when its running hope it makes an excursion though the upper midwest.
Can't wait for the Big Boy! I, too, hope it makes an excursion through the upper midwest!
That is all really good stuff. The big steam is out of our realm of thinking these days but the E units are what I grew up with. Rock Island Line was less than 1/8 mile behind my families home. I just loved those locos.
Love chasing the Es. Have them to myself usually
Thank you. I will keep on the look out for your shows. You two make a great team and are funny and informative. I have enjoyed everyone of your shows.
I really do enjoy your train videos, thank for posting! :)
Thanks!! More screwing around on its way too
HI Toy Man and Lady 😎 : I am please that Union Pacific has this project, bringing back railroad history.
Carl Sorensen yeah with my glasses off ate some threes look exactly alike! And I know better too we featured 833 and a couple of other shows
hi guys, I look forward to the weekly video of your vicariously screwing around on my behalf, with your generous permission of course.
Sure! Love to have our viewers along! Just be sure to fasten your seatbelt! Thanks for watching!
I missed a couple of hours of school to see the 844 (which i saw the day before) leave the boise depot
Good job!! Better than math.
Thanks it was so worth it
Hi, I’m going to be visiting Denver and Cheyenne (from Australia, en route by train from San Francisco to Chicago) next May and wondered how I might arrange a visit to the UP roundhouse, if that’s at all possible.
Toy Man Television thank you so much for your help. I’ll give your suggestions a go. You never know, I might get lucky.
WOW!!!!!
Whats the music that u used in the short 844 section of the vid 3:31
Richard Band - Americana.
Last it ran was in 2010 the Challenger. Almost a decade since it ran. Time flies.
Yes. Glad they are back to having two and one a giant!
What were some of the music tracks that you used for each engine montage
UP has 5511 for sale I believe, if you happen upon it there is a vid on YT of 844 and 5511 double-heading back in the day.
5511 is actually a 2-10-2 locomotive
Yup oops.
So people can see and enjoy it.
why @ 6:20 do you have a pic of an N&W Y locomotive?
Oops. Mislabeled on the internet. Didn't spot it.
Sort of smacks into the story:
ua-cam.com/video/Rf8JBYp1HsE/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/RVP2QhdDVgc/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/MUOBv4pgca8/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/J4CQ83teIME/v-deo.html
As these have few views I guess this assume it's because most people do find them a bit boring. But take a look. I find them interesting, but I have been known to just sit and watch paint dry,
I got to enjoy the dome dining car in 1969 aboard the City of Los Angeles Wow!
Rumor has it that 5511 is being donated to a museum in Evanston, WY and will me moved soon.
WOW!!!!! I was thinking that would be THE BEST PLLACE FOR IT! ua-cam.com/video/3-lvTr0Ai3k/v-deo.html
Sin Atoned for. Give you a thumbs up. :)
In aircraft lingo, the parts locomotive would be called a "Hanger Queen," always needing one more part to get it airborne, until another part gets scavenged to keep another plane flying. I guess it would be a "Shop Queen" or "Roundhouse Queen."
Kind of like the guy with two or three Plymouth Super Bees/Dodge Daytonas sitting in his yard, gradually becoming one with Mother Earth. When asked if he'd consider selling one or all, he replies, "No, I'm gonna restore one of them one of these days." The fact that he's been saying that for the past 20 years, and he's now 75 years old doesn't matter. "One of these days... "
"Happy talk keep talking happy talk,
Talk about things you're going to do..."
-- From South Pacific
tom7601 isn't it amazing how many people are like that, I understand their vision everyone wants to restore the pile of rust out in the yard, but so often those things just sit there and until they are utterly destroyed
Sad but true...
844 is called living legend
Looooove your video, on the Union Pacific.
What a great steam program!! UP is great!
they have 6 diesel engines in the heritage unit series
844 was here last summer
Its amazing right?????
what's the music at 3:37?
That is Richard Band “Americana”. Sort of based on Aaron Copland Appalachian spring. Sort of. Also Copland’s tender land.
I gotta agree with you - the E-units (and the F-units) are what diesel locomotives should look like!
Love those old covered wagons. The GPS and SDs and the OMG dash 2 all look alike to me. However an SP GP9... well. Cool. Of and a DD40X.
Are they actually going to restore the UP 3985?
Did you ever find out why there not going to restore the decapod?
We’ll sort of. Never say never.. but it costs about 3 million to restore one of these. They were planning to rebuild the 3985 but for less they realized they could restore a Big Boy. The goal being to get back to two locomotives. In reality as long as 844 is running that’s all corporate wants. But the rail fans wanted to see 3985 back and they didn’t want bad blood over that. But adding more locomotives? We’ll never say never. But not any time soon.
@@ToyManTelevision
My dad and I have collectively #13 Challenger diecast kits in which two are factory new all from the 60s and 3 big boy kits in which 2 are factory new I enjoy working on them it's kinda fun.
I enjoyed the video when you were here in Portland Oregon and if I remember right you also visited Astoria.
Question when you both saw the big boy what was the color of the lettering on the cab and tender I'd like to know because when I order the decals I will get the right color.
Thank you
Love the videos have a great Thanksgiving and a very Merry ⛄
Hats off to Union Pacific for investing back into their history and community. Not all RRs do that
correction: the engine is 838 not 833
Yup
at 559 I got one of those, didn't know what it was,,,im a horder
We are not hoarders we are collectors! Not sure what the differences but I know we’re not hoarders just collectors
It would be awesome if some preservation group would take UP 838 and restored it or aleast a cosmetic restoration for UP 838
miguel chavez yes. And the other steam locomotive.
sorry to ask but, I don't who to ask as the museum said they don,t know. what I want to know is what steam loco was on display at the science museum inphilidelphia in 1975?.
gee, don't know. Anyone out there know?
Great video!
I hope that they'll (NS), bring the 1218 back to steam....!
Can never get too much steam! 😉😁
TRUE!! Love to ride behind it.
Toy Man Television
As they say, if it looks right, it is right and the A looks just riiiight! 😉😄
Where is the red mars light?
For years on the front of 844. But Ed removed it as he backdated. It’s there in the shop.
I hope they get all back into normal service one day...
Was there in 2019 chasing the Big Boy back to WYOMING Did see the tenders parked in the yard Would have gone back in 2020 BUT.....................................................................................................................Hopefully 2023
They don’t let anyone into the shops anymore. And back then it was rare and special. But as of now.. never.
Union Pacific railroad has decided to retire the 3985 now
Yup
Why don't they use the Joe Jordan water tender anymore ?
They have 2 water tenders made from Turbine tenders. And about 3 4? more that were used as water cars back in the 80's. But they never leave without 2. No water tanks left out there!
Why is the Challenger 3985 down?????
darnel washoe The firebox got too thin and dangerous and needs to be rebuilt. At that time they didn't know if they could rebuild it but they just finished putting a new firebox in 844 and they now know exactly what to do therefore as soon as 4014 is finished challenger will be next
844 is pretty much a brand new 73 year old engine.
great vid just wasted the Stanta Barbra vid also ... been working on updating the national Roundhouse data base past few weeks over 1000 locations in the USA and thats prob like only 10 % the most i have is over 200 locations for Illinois only cuz they have great historical coverage
Yup. And now we loose the roundhouse in Salt Lake City. Really sucks
I fee a little bummed because I wish the spare parts Locomotive UP 838 would undergo cosmetic restoration. But also I hope UP 5511 will one day get a home at a museum.
Both will happen at some point. 5511 will find a good home as it's beautiful as is! They need to find a good INDOR home for it. And 838 is a treasure.
Yep I’m the biggest fan of Union Pacific
Big Boy will be back!! 2021.
Yay
the sister locomotive there isn't 833. 833 is in Ogden.
Right. It's 838. Oops....
LOL! Darn astigmatism!
The challenger will be restored and out for power in 2021. I hope so. And it was pulled in 2010.
As of now as far as I know there are no plans for 3985.
It's not the 833 that they are using for parts. The 833 is in Ogden.
3 and 8's oops.
I think they should bring back the mars light. That would make people happy. :D
Make US happy!!! I love Mars..... Went there once I think.
I meant on the 844... XD
Restore 5511 running order, I say. Every Locomotive at the roundhouse deserves to say it's story.
E units had style unlike modern diesels.
If you think about up has the BIG 3 like N&W except UP will have all 3 running while N&W has only 1
Well 2 running. At least for now. They have said they will have 3985 back running again in 2022. Let’s hope so!
To go back and forth to go back
I'm so sad they retired 3985 because of 4014 :(
They better run them all
Run what they can when they can. Sure looking forward to the Big Boy!!

Another great adventure in screwing around. Keep on screwing. 🇺🇸🚂🐢🐢🐢
Always!! Thanks for your viewership!
They keep stealing parts from that other engine.
It's like steam locomotive cannibalism, or something.....
hard to watch and LISTEN to
Great video.
