    Got to see a few Big Boys pulling freights through in central Nebraska, when I was a young boy. Not many because they didn't need to be used on the flat lands there, but when they did, dad told me and my grandma lived on Front Street, so a visit to her served a dual purpose. If I get to see a steam 4000 again, pulling an honest load by itself, I guess it'd be time to say, "Thanks Lord", and just go on out of here.

    Comment June 2023: it’s hard to believe how long ago Big Boy began his journey. Seems like only yesterday I watched them tow it off static display in Pomona through the fairgrounds parking lot!

    I grew up with big locomotives running through my back yard in Boston. I’d stand on the fence and wave. Could really touch it if I reached out. But we kids weren’t that dumb. Had a train running through my back yard in Safety Harbor, Florida. Although I moved, there is a track about a mile from me and I can hear the trains late at night.

      Not sure if I ever saw one of those things running. If I did I was very young and it just didn’t make an impression I guess. I want to told my uncle that I wanted to see a steam locomotive running and he said oh you’ve seen that 1 million times! And I said no I haven’t and he said well I guess they’re not around much anymore but trust me you’ve seen them. So I assume I did I just can’t remember it darn it

    There are two Big Boy's up in Duluth Minnesota. One is in a museum Downtown and you can climb on and check it all out. I've climbed into the fire box of it!
    The other Big Boy is sitting up on the mountain from the bay of Duluth Minnesota, Lake Superior.
    This one you can climb on it and that's it can't go inside.

    My Dad road behind UP4005 on a troop train during ww2. The conductor took any of the soldiers that were interested up to see that locomotive that now lives in Denver. My dad bought a first generation Max Grey O scale Big Boy #UP4005. So I have watched it run since my childhood. He never thought that the Big Boys would never run again. He passed in 1999. He did chase 3985 and 844 around a lot in his life, so I related to your video in so many ways. Why did it take me almost 3 years to find these videos of yours???

    I'm Locomotive Engineer and get to run steam on a regular bases. Our locomotives aren't nearly as long as a Big Boy and I find it difficult to see around the boiler, so I have to rely on my fireman's eyes especially on curves to the left. With the Big Boys extra long boiler the Engineer would have had to rely even more on his Fireman for left side visuals. Would love to get my hand on the throttle when they get the 4014 running.

    just amazing commentary and footage thanks for sharing :-) I'm so glad #4014 is coming back to life i wonder if they will ever do a double header with #3985 and #4014 as a farewell to #3985 and a welcome back to #4014 now that will be epic and a nice way to retire or vacate #3985's along with her bigger brother the big boy. :-). I will be in my mid 30s when #4014 and I hope to share this moment with my grandfather because when i was younger he would always praise the BigBoy and i never knew the engine until i saw old videos of it :-)

    I discovered your videos when I was doing a search for video of my personal favored locomotive the Southern Crescent 1404. not much video on her found yet. I have personal history with this train as a youngster I and my family often road this train from Atlanta to Birmingham almost every weekend. While I was never privileged to ride being pulled by the 1401 itself but I do remember the porters, and the staff always talking about her. My father was a 3rd generation engineer for Southern Railway so my love for trains was in stilled in me at a very young age. Any way thank you for you videos always loved trains.

    Great Job... I salute you, Sir for a fine production! I always wondered why they dragged their feet on the restoration of a Big Boy. They did a Challenger, probably because a Challenger is an oil burner and more easy to refuel in the Diesel era? Plus, you can burn Diesel in an oil burner, like the little locomotives at Disneyland...

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  9 років тому

      +JungleYT Some emploies did the Challenger on their own before UP got behind it. It was a coal fired at first but on it's first outing to Utah, it started hundreds (no lie) of fires and even almost burned a house. So the UP converted it to oil. Many of the Challengers were oil from the beginning, but not 3985. Hope to see that one back on the rails at some point.

    • @JungleYT
      @JungleYT 9 років тому

      +Toy Man Television Thanks for the information... I did not realize that the 3985 was down. I did a little reading as per your notice. In this day and time and with modern 3D manufacturing processes, no excuse to NOT be able to make new parts or have more than one copy these locos operational. Pass this on to the powers that be...

    I really enjoyed your 'Big Boy' video and I'm wondering whether you are aware of the Southern Pacific version. SP ran their version over the Sierra mountains and the length was such that they turned the boiler and cab around and connected that to the tender so that the crewmen could see the tracks ahead. I have an HO reproduction but don't know of an original. My father was an SP locomotive fireman and worked on the SP version and ran between Sparks and Carlin NV. Those were all numbered in a series of 4100 or 4200. I suspect SP was a little more aggressive in the junk business and I'd appreciate learning of a surviving example in a museum that I could visit.

      the cab forwards were interesting. They also were designed so the crew wouldn't suffocate going through the long tunnels. Needless to say they were oil burners which southwest railroads preferred anyway as it was easier to get oil than coal out west...

      Oh man, that is SO awesome! UP, I see what you did there! :P
      UP really is a cool railroad! Love their restoration and heritage units. That's how you keep the public looking at you favorably.
      I'm starting an N scale model railroad after years being away from the hobby. I'm modeling primarily DME (Dakota, Minnesota, & Eastern), with some ICE (Iowa, Chicago, & Eastern, DME's sister railroad), CNW (Chicago & Northwestern, the railroad where DME and ICE's lines came from), and Rock Island. Basically, I'm modeling fallen flags that I grew up seeing, but not in their times... I'm modeling them as if they were still around today, as if the bankruptcies, sales, and mega-mergers of the 70s, 80s, and 90s had never happened. There will be no BNSF, no CSX on my inter-railway connections. UP will just be UP. There will be some inter-rail Chessie System, some Burlington Northern, Canadian Pacific, and yeah... UP will be there. Though the big mergers killed a lot of classic road names, UP is more or less a classic, and I'll let their stock roll on my rails.

    +ToyMan *Actually, the Union Pacific contracted with the American Locomotive Company,* located alongside the New York Central tracks at Schenectady, NY, USA, for their 25 builds of 4-8+8-4 Single Expansion Articulated, Class BSA-1; this class was engineered to pull 2,000 tons single-handed over the steep grades of the Wasatch, a situation where the UP's existing 4-8-4 Americans, Classes FEF-1 and FEF-2 (an influence on the NYC's short-lived 4-8-4's, Class S1a), had to doublehead. The UP's existing 4-6+6-4 American Single Expansion Articulateds, Classes CSA-1 through CSA-6, could pull 1,6oo tons single-handed over the Wasatch and were the Class BSA-1's design baseline.

      WOW. Good info. One thing I am really struck with is who late they were built. The war delayed the builds to 1944 in the end as I recall. THese were the most "modern" steam locos built in the US. Amazing "Last of the giants for sure"....

    • @BCSchmerker
      @BCSchmerker 7 років тому

      +ToyMan *American Locomotive was fourth priority behind arms manufacturers, shipbuilders and automotive manufacturers,* as U. S. Armies in the field needed guns, bayonets, swords, grenades, artillery ammunition, &c. for the fight, plus tanks and trucks to take 'em within striking distance of the enemy. The Navy and Marine Corps also needed ships to take 'em within effective range of islands to be reconquered and enemy task forces to be engaged and sunk. That meant the railroads needed locomotives and rolling stock to get those munitions and vehicles to embarcation for the hot war overseas.

    that bicyle chain is not jury rigged.......it was put on there by the U.P in the late forties beacuse the lenghth of the rod running the lubericator was prone to breaking......it is the ONLY chain driven device on an American steam locomotive.

      There were I believe three locomotives that were larger of the big boy depending on how are you measure them. At least one was heavier at least one was longer. As you mentioned the triplex had more drive wheels. All of the other locomotives were intended for helper service. The big boy was the only mainline locomotive of that size.

    Bring me up to speed here; is there a significance to the front diesel being 4914? Thanks.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  7 років тому

      YES!! It's actually 4014, same number as the Big Boy. When the Big Boy is ready they will need to change that Or some workaround. Thats why 844 was 8444 for years. Diesel 844 is now in a museum in Bolder Nevada. (we have a show on that museum) so 844 got it's number back. The other diesel is 4884. Same as the wheel arrangement and class of 4014. Gotta love the UP.
