844 (cheeky and in mock terror): (to a couple of passing diesels) Run for your lives! The Leviathan has awoken! (The GP38Ns, realizing who 844 is talking about, scream like a couple of terrified school girls and make a run for it. The second they're out of sight, both 844 and the Challenger burst out laughing. 4014, on the other buffer, emerges from the shed with a half quizzical expression. 4014(to 844, humored): You just had to go and pull THAT one, didn't you? 844(slightly embarrassed but satisfied): Yeah, but it was so worth it! (The Challenger, on the other buffer, is still laughing like a fool. He finally calms down enough to speak.) Challenger(slightly regretful): Still, I kinda wish one of our crews had a camera. Those GPs' reactions would've definitely made UA-cam. 4014 and 844 (in agreement): Oh yeah!
cool but there are 2 bonus details 1: Big Boy became the basis of Big 1 from the Galey Railways 2: 4018 was planned to restored for a movie but it never materialized
The CSA Challengers ran with 255 psi boiler pressure, not 280 psi. The Jabelmann Challengers, based off of the 4000-Class Big Boys, were the ones which ran with 280 psi boiler pressure.
Big Boy helping that stalled that freight train was definitely taking the page out of 844’s handbook and of course Henry’s exploit to do a Super Rescue. What a Chad
Another few fun facts to add, UP 4014's whistle is instead UP 844's original whistle that slated with the 844 til the early 2000's, the one 844 currently wears is UP 4014's original Longbell that was presumed to be the 4013's, however this was debunked to the markings on the whistle during 4014's restoration. Also EGG
Big Boy has considerably more power. A lot more tractive effort, which is a more accurate indication of pulling ability. But it’s not slow. 844 by comparison is much faster than either of them. Much larger driving wheels. It easily topped 100 mph.
We all need to imagine what a Big Boy-like locomotive would be today. Union Pacific announces they're working with GE to make a ginormous train that can pull the heaviest freights with one locomotive. And it works.
@davidfuller581 Depending on what you classify as modern, the DDA40X could classify and that was moderately successful, if you don't include their tendency to blow traction motors later in life.
I've seen UP 4012 in Steamtown as a kid, and I've seen UP 4018 at the Museum of American Railroads in Frisco TX as I was 15 years old, these massive monsters are the true king of steam, one day I'll catch UP 4014 on future excursions across the country as if the UP steam team will repair 844 or not.
This video on the Big Boys and #4014 is everything that I, as a huge mega-fan of this giant rail rider, could ever have imagined. I have had the huge lucky chance to see 4014 in person not once, not twice, but all three times it's been on a tour that goes into the southern midwest of the USA. This engine is The King of Steam! The King of The Rails! It's like the grandpa, that many young children are lucky to have! Big, tough, strong, and wise, the 4014 will always be a feast to my eyes, reminding me, and many others, of a bygone era of railroading that will, hopefully, never be forgotten. Thank you, AmtrakGuy365. PS. Congrats on getting a sponsor for this video!
Hey Jad, I don't know if you'll see this but i´m a fan of your content since like 2018, and i want to thank you very much for taking the time to produce this video, especially from a living and active icon in the UP fleet, at the moment I'm facing difficult times as I lost the HD that contained the installation, modifications and all the progress made in the last 5 years at Trainz (luckily I managed to save the Big Boys and the Challengers) so seeing this managed to give me a boost in the midst of my quest to try to get it all back (the CSAs and the Big Boys with whitewalls *OOOOOOF* my heart, boy)
Everything about this is wonderful. Steam locomotives ARE art, and the late Wilbert Vere Awdry would wholeheartedly agree. There’s just something about them that makes them unique compared to diesels or electrics. Sure, diesels and electrics can be epic, too, but most of them just can’t match the beauty, grace, spirit, and fanbase strength that steamers have. Long live the Big Boy, the Union Pacific Steam Team, the railfan community, and the spirit of steam locomotives as a whole, whether they be from America, Britain, Germany, Canada, Australia, France, Switzerland, China, Japan, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Austria, Russia, Poland, Ireland, or any other country. egg

I was really glad to finally get to see 4014 on its 2024 rail tour. The whistle & locomotive are some of the LOUDEST things I’ve ever heard/felt. Video just doesn’t do justice to how massive the whistle sounds in person.
Never thought you will do this. Not to mention the sponsorships. But as I am watching this video, the title is spectacular for this locomotive. After watching the video: amazing. I love you used clips from that documentary on up steam giants of the big boy development and also mentioning 4014 too. Amazing video. And in my honest opinion, I think 4014 steaming back up sort of revitalize steam preservation since no matter if a majority of preserved steam locomotives can’t run in the mainline, at least 4014 demonstrates it’s possible with dedication to the work. EGG!
I am (im)patiently waiting for my chance to go see the 4014. I saw the 3985 in Portland, Oregon back in 2005(?) when I was in 7th grade and I loved seeing the Challenger sitting in the yard. I thought it was the coolest thing seeing the (then) largest operating steam locomotive and I want to see it's bigger brother. I've heard that the reason that they arn't bringing the Big Boy to Portland, Oregon is because of tunnel clearences, so not anytime soon, even though they've teasted me one time by bringing out a schedule showing a Portland, Or stop.
“Faster than a speeding bullet… More powerful than an iron horse… Able to carrying the freight with a single strength, Look out, it’s a big, it’s a giant. *it’s Big Boy!*
I love the Union Pacific Big Boy Steam Locomotives, even Union Pacific Big Boy 4014. I hope one day to see that Steam Locomotive operating and pulling one of it’s excursion trains in the near future. It will be way a lot of fun to see this beautiful Steam Locomotive of the Union Pacific Railroad.
Love the video! A minor corrections that admittedly doesn't matter: the original 20 4-8-8-4-(1) Big Boys had 24,000 gallon tenders. The later 4-8-8-4-(2) Big Boys which were built in 1944, as well as a few of the 4-8-8-4-(1) Big Boys received the 25,000 gallon tender, which is visually the same. Most notable of the 4-8-8-4-(1) Big Boys that received this later tender was UP 4005, whose original was destroyed in the 1953 derailment.
If the Big Boy had a theme song, it would be “We are the Desperate Measures” (the fan version) from the Halo 3: ODST soundtrack. Everything about that song just screams Big Boy to me considering the size and power of these Metal Behemoths. Excellent video man!! 👍
I fell in love with these engines back when I was a child and my family went to the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin and my brother and I sat in the fireman and engineer seats of #4017. The driving wheels were actually taller than my dad which was impressive to see! egg
The Union Pacific rr "big boy" class is one of my personal favorite types of articulated steam locomotives, I loved the film "Last of the Giants" when I was younger and I have been interested in the UP big boy locomotives ever since. I am pleased that the UP steam crew was able to restore locomotive 4014 back into operation back in 2019, which many people thought that seeing a "big boy" locomotive return to service again was nearly impossible. It is great to see locomotive 4014 back in operation again, also since it's rebuild was completed and converted to fuel oil from coal firing engine 4014 now produces a tractive effort of 138,240 lbf as this measurement is mentioned from Wikipedia.
10:34 That's my favorite part of 4014's 2023 excursions! Four years before that year, I have portrayed Big Boy 4014 as my favorite Thomas character "Edward the Blue Engine" since Edward was confined in the shed for a long time and 4014 remained on static display in Railgiants museum in Pomona CA, because Edward was old, slow, and weak while Big Boy was too large, heavy, and too expensive for restoration and maintenance, But.. both have proved to be really useful by helping trains over hills (Edward help Gordon with Troublesome Trucks over Gordon's hill, and Big Boy 4014 helping the Diesels one of them broke down with the freight train over the hill in Blair NE).
I once saw UP 4014 when it visited my home state, in the city of New Orleans. Also fun Fact the big boys were the inspiration for a train in an anime made by Legi miamoto ( hopefully I didn't mess that up)

The Big Boys were the best. Though the UP experimented with turbine locomotives, who proved to be more powerful (see Engines of Union Pacific for more info), but also teamed up with them. But other than that, that Big Boys all have a place in the hearts of railfans.

God... I haven't seen that clip at @2:40 since I was a little kid.... and I'm 41 now.
I was able to see 4014 this year in Illinois.
I have never heard this version of "Great Big Rollin Railroad" at 13:10 and can't seem to find the source of it.
ua-cam.com/video/zdLrV-S61Es/v-deo.htmlsi=tv5QZdHh9RtcdTNF I think this is it
@Rickybnsf Yeah, that's 100% it.
I saw it in person big boy is the god of the railway/railroad
9:29 it has spoken
Egg, great video once again!
The Big Boys were the best. Though the UP experimented with turbine locomotives, who proved to be more powerful (see Engines of Union Pacific for more info), but also teamed up with them. But other than that, that Big Boys all have a place in the hearts of railfans.
