Thank you for sharing another look at the Colorado Railroad Museum. I sure hope I can visit there someday. I enjoyed seeing Bob Richardson again. I had the pleasure of listening to him speak in Ohio sometime ago. I look forward to the show you mentioned with an interview with Mr. Richardson. Keep the shows coming, I enjoy them all.
Richardson was great!!!! One thing he always did was try to make a buck off his screwing around. And not just to pay the bills, but he seemed to feel guilty about buying steam locomotives and cars and geese... BUt if if was a cash flow.. then it was OK. I get it. Been there, have the tee shirt. BUT what he really did was create something way more important. A great museum. Just like Forney in Denver, his collection was some massive screwing around, but in the end, these great artifacts were saved because some person took it on them self to collect... LOCOMOTIVES?
If you ever visit Peoria Illinois you need to setup a couple days out at Wildlife Prairie Park, they have 4 or 6 Cabooses setup as cabins, also grain elevators, a horse stable and a house. The park has a small train station and trains to go around some of the park than a Jungle Vehicle to take people inside the Bison, Elk, Deer, Texas Long Horn Cattle enclosure. Hi Guys, Love that museum. Been there so many times I have lost count. I am a died in the wool narrow gauge modeler in On3. Speaking of RGS 20, the locomotive is at the Strasburg RR undergoing restoration. I was there in May and did the shop tour. They are making progress and hopefully the loco will be back in the museum soon. Also, there is a great caboose motel in the Strasburg area. My wife and went there on our honeymoon way back in 1991 and stayed in a caboose. Its really neat as the Strasburg RR runs right by the Caboose Motel and everyone goes out to wave at the train. Our module group have been going to Strasburg every year since 1984 we always ride the train, go to the PA RR museum, then we head on to Kimberton, PA for the annual Mid Atlantic Narrow Gauge Module meet. We will have our entire modular layout which depicts Dolores at the convention. We can catch up. Cheers, Keith Stamper.
I know I always hype about the East Coast, but to keep that to a minimum here all I'll say is that next to Strasburg is the Red Caboose Motel which has a very nice collection of habitable rolling stock from all over. Also, thanks for the shots of the garden railroad! I was here in the Summer of 2016 but didn't get a chance to see that! Great place. I was happy to see that they take their time to ensure everything is done right with their restorations. I was also there on a relatively quiet day, 491 was steamed up but just being kept hot for some minor testing. They hostled her around a bit and spun her on the turntable. Also the Rio Grande F units were quite a sight! I believe I also visited the Leadville Colorado and Southern that day. Leadville is a nice quiet place. Tin Cup Pass and Saint Elmo were unbelievable. According to the book The Story Of The California Zephyr by Karl R. Zimmermann on page 54, Zimmermann writes " A Vice-President of Electro-Motive Division of General Motors (Cryrus R. Osborn) was riding in the cab of a Rio Grande diesel through the canyon in 1944" explained the Rio Grande Zephyrette (car hostess). So it was an officer of G.M. and not U.P. as you misstated in your video. Also the book states the dome car on top of the monument to be 9 feet long and weigh 500 pounds. That might be why it never got stolen or vandalized. I enjoy your videos . Keep posting.
It’s a great model. Not sure why it weighs so much. Must be a heavy gauge stainless steel. I wonder if it’s made of the same metal as the real cars. That would be really heavy. Because at just over 50 pounds per foot on average. I’ve seen this size riding cars in this same scale and they are a fraction of that. But made from aluminum. I wonder if budd made the model. From the same stainless.
Funny you mention modeling caboose 49. I built my version of it in 20.32 scale as it appeared in its rebuilt state as caboose 0548. That is an interesting subject as it was less extensively rebuilt and still looked like a bobber just riding on trucks.
I hope to run into you both sometime, I help there during events in 2019 and will continue to help with events like polar, Halloween, and DOWT. I will be turning 16 this year so I am hoping to start being apart of operations in the round house. Also #30 outside the depot was originally given to the museum from the Denver parks and recreation because they said it was taking up space because it was just sitting there being graffitied and ruined.
We love going to the Colorado Railroad Museum. There’s just so much to do in and around Golden in Denver if you love narrow gauge trains. You guys have a grande museum there.
Colorado & Northwestern #30 originally ran on the line between Boulder and Nederland, Colorado. When that line was washed out for the last time, it was purchased by the Colorado & Southern and became their #74. As such, it and its sister engines 75 and 76, were the last narrow gauge locomotives to operate on the Climax to Leadville line and were the last narrow gauge engines operated by the C&S. When the Climax line was standard gauged during WWII, the locomotives were rendered surplus and eventually 75 and 76 went to a Central American railroad. 74, on the other hand was purchased by the Rio Grande Southern and operated there until that railroad shut down. It was placed on display in Boulder’s Central Park along with a passenger car and a RGS caboose. The caboose was blown up in a prank gone wrong and replaced by a surplus D&RGW caboose. There was an attempt to restore it into operating condition about ten years ago but that resulted in a lawsuit and eventually #30 was loaned to the CRRM.
Fun fact about the wooden mock-up of RGS 20 that model went on to be the mock-up of the Hooterville Cannonball from Petticoat Junction in all the close up and interior shots in and around the locomotive. Panning shots like the locomotive passing the camera was the actual Sierra 3.
I love listening to you talk about the history of trains, I don't know any of it and it's so cool. I keep wondering if you've seen the one between Thistle and Birdseye. I see a glimpse of it every day through the trees in someone's yard and always wonder if it has a cool history. If anyone knows it's probably you guys
Yeah I think that’s a private property I was just talking to Karyn about it. If you need to get a better look at it but again it seems that it’s on private property.
Love to see that!!!!! And #20. And..... damn Covid. But we should have our shots in about 6 weeks. (And be caught up to the dog 🐕). Anyway soon! Then “back on the road again!”
Toy Man Television The way things are going, it is unlikely. 20 was run very hard on the rgs, and had a bent frame. I believe the boiler will be replaced. To make matters worse, Strasburg is expanding their repair shop, and had 80,000 bucks stolen from them recently.
Joe Loll wow. Didn’t know. The bent frame is a problem. Shame they can’t save the boiler!! I do wonder why it was not sent to Wasatch Rail Rebuilders in near by Cheyenne. But I’m un informed. Just looking forward to seeing it under steam at Golden
Hey heads up! Two GP9,s Pan Am Railways Heritige Units in the Boston & Maine and Maine Central Railroad paint schemes heading your way towards the Heber Valley Scenic Railroad :)
Nice place. I always liked these streamlined diesel, especially in Rio Grande colors (I practically bought a full Zephyr set Kato N scale 15 years ago, but it was a bit expansive for me at the time, and therefore I'm sticking to O scale narrow gauge for the moment). Nice to see the live steam beasts, but they don't seem to run them. That would be cool. Nice to see this little caboose without trucks.
I enjoyed this tour of the Colorado Railroad museum, so it gets a thumbs up! Lots of exiting things to see there. Wish I'd been there. I just read that Amtrak is putting a 1955 vista dome coach back in service in Portland Maine. The report claims it's the only car that remains of that type. Is this true? Toy Man, you have an excellent working knowledge about the railroads, is this claim true? I rode in a "Union Pacific vista dome" back in 1958, and it was really nice. What a beautiful coach!
NICE VIDEO I ENJOY YOUR BOTH AND YOUR SCREWING AROUND TIME. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND EFFORT AND ALLOWING US TO COME ALONG WITH YOU AND YOUR INFORMATION AND THOUGHTS AND COMMENTS ON THIS TOPIC. JIM KAMMERER OF PHILADELPHIA PA THANK YOU AGAIN FOR THIS VIDEO.
Nice locomotive 346 nice-looking restored carriage or Passenger cars. Nice work on the videos toy man you know a long time ago when I was real little still a kid I've always wondered if there was ever be a running big boy at least I get to cross that off my bucket list. You guys have a good weekend
The next time you get to the museum you consider meeting the director , Michelle Kempema, she is a great model railroad advocate. She is a regular guest on the 'What's Neat This Week' show with Ken Patterson. It would be a good opportunity to expand the channel .
We should. I taped an interview with Richardson about 2 years before he passed. 40 minutes of how and why he started the museum. Towing the C19 with #20 all the way from Durango to Alamosa. Then moving to golden. Great stuff!
I watched your video on Adam Pinale's n scale layout and you said that he originally was making his n scale layout the D&RGW in the 1950s, and you said he's starting a garden railroad and he's got a k27 and a k37, you should suggest him to find a Bachmann large scale c19 locomotive#345 in the bumblebee paint scheme, that locomotive was used in the 1952 movie Denver and Rio Grande and it was one of two 2-8-0 steam locomotives that was wrecked in a head-on crash in a scene in that movie
He has one or two C 19's. VERY COOL LOCO. No bumblebee paint. You see them around, but sort of an odd and special paint job. He's really into green boiler jacket. .
Well if you want to get super technical, All of the K-37s were originally standard gauge engines initially before conversion, and all but 2 of them survive. So in a *Very* loose way 683 isn't the sole surviving D&RGW Standard Guage loco.
Yes. They were standard gauge. But not now. Anyway only that one as near as I can tell. There is one in Heber that was used in the steel mill in Geneva Utah. But while it ran on d and rgw tracks. I think. But if there’s another one out there I’m drawing a blank.
Speaking of living on a caboose, the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad in West Virginia offers some type of trip where you can camp outdoors in a caboose. You ride behind a Climax locomotive, and about halfway through the trip, they cut off the caboose at a camp site and they will pick you up the next day.
Hunter L. Terrell hi! I call it “ken Burns’ because it sounds like the stuff he uses. It’s a reworked library music tune from SmartSound. We buy all our music from them.
All of the Galloping Geese exist except the first one but a replica was built of it which has ran at the Museum and a version of Thomas Tank Engine has visited there on special occasions.
I always enjoy your trips to museums. Do you know if 5771 is in good enough condition that it could be made to operate again? Both of you are excellent in your unintended roles of travel agents, enticing those of us who do not live in the Rocky Mountains, to spend time there. Thank you for anther enjoyable Sunday morning show.
It's good. D and RG ran it up to the end. As I recall they put a new "prime mover" in it so it has a modern engine. Assuming its all still in there and the railroad didn't take stuff out before giving it up.
Dude!!!!! Another fantastic video as always. Just a quesrion, but are you two planning on coming to the national train show in KC? If so, would love to meet you two in person.
Having just seen this (10/1/2022), I was wondering if you’ve been back to the museum since this video-and if so, did you see the last mainline wigwag signal? It was removed I think March 2022 and was supposed to go to Golden…?
Toy Man Television I know that, I have lots of video of her! But no. 40 ran in 2013 and was restored they’re in 2013. Then seemed to be donated to the George Town loop.
you should come up to Nebraska to see Nebraska's ONLY railroad tunnel Now bypassed in the 1980s I'd like to build a replica of Goose #1 but make it so I can run on both 3 foot & Standard Gauge hehe btw? the average MPGs on the Gooses is 1-3 MPG! LOL hey Caboose 49 is available to buy in G scale!
I don't think Ward got the idea for the Emma Nevada from ticket to tomahawk as he purchased the engine a few years before the movie was released. Good video nonetheless
Just wondering on the paint.. Similar name... similar paint. NOt sure when ward painted his, but for sure he knew about reworking 20 and building the wood replica. Wonder if he may have worked on the wood model...
There's that place up on the Marias Pass in Montana on the BNSF that's named after some Dutch guy. You can stay in cabooses that line the track there. It's a bit pricey but it seems like the further west and north you are the more costly living is. With respect to the Glenwood Canyon Historic monument if they were afraid of someone stealing the 1/8th model why didn't they just replace it with a silhouette of a dome car. You see a lot of this concept in National Military Parks. Case in point there aren't that many civil war cannons lying around for display so what they are doing is creating silhouettes of cannons to give the impression of this. When you see these for the first time you will do a double take especially when the are placed as a gun battery at a distance. These displays are heavy and mounted to a post buried in the ground set in concrete so theft is virtually impossible.
I think there was little interest at the time. On one was even taking care of the monument. I'll bet Richardson just took it. He and friends just said, lets grab it before someone else does. In the 50's if it was not modern and new it was junk. The lines the railroad closed were all making money!! Not a lot but who cares? BUT D and RG thought they were known as the last Class A railroad still running steam, and they wanted to remove the "stigma". Idiots. LAst steam train ran just 2 weeks before the first flight to the moon.....

I spoke to this guy, and I asked him on 191 being restored and he told me that it woundn’t run due to the boiler being made out cast-iron. And running it now would be bad. Edit: I will ask about the other locos but for now who knows?

There was an attempt to restore it into operating condition about ten years ago but that resulted in a lawsuit and eventually #30 was loaned to the CRRM.
allencthulhu thanks for adding the information about this engine. I grew up seeing that engine in Boulder.
Fun fact about the wooden mock-up of RGS 20 that model went on to be the mock-up of the Hooterville Cannonball from Petticoat Junction in all the close up and interior shots in and around the locomotive. Panning shots like the locomotive passing the camera was the actual Sierra 3.
I'll be taking my son and best friend there next June. Of course after we ride the C&T and the D&S and visit COMO!!!
SCORE!! And dont miss Georgetown. Just up the canyon from here.
Would love to meet you and Karyn! I'm going to have to get more of your shirts ( my son and I have one) for the trip!!!
COOL!!! We still have the tees on teespring. I think....
Well, there is another caboose motel in Williams Arizona, the same place as the Grand Canyon Railroad I recommend it HIGHLY!!
Screwing around at its finest! Great video as usual.
great show as always! Cant ever go wrong with train museums.
That looked like great fun. Love your channel, keep them coming...Anthony
i hope you come down for a museum event some time ill try to get down there to run my locomotive for you guys
Love to see that!!!!! And #20. And..... damn Covid. But we should have our shots in about 6 weeks. (And be caught up to the dog 🐕). Anyway soon! Then “back on the road again!”
@@ToyManTelevision yeah covid has been a drag but hey let’s just hope for the best this year
I was able to see #20's boiler, frame and wheels at the Strasburg railroad last summer. We'll see how much more time it will take to restore her.
Hope it gets home soon!!!!
ROAD TRIP!!! They need to get 618 up this winter!! 4014 will be here and steam fans from all over so they need to put on a good show!
You guys should go check out the Nevada county narrow gauge railroad museum
Love this video
White over black really is a good way to get the lettering. But not the only way. Having the lettering inset is classy. "To Each, Their Own".
Ha, I meant Black over white....more coffee before posting.....
Its so easy to just paint the lettering on. They stencil the letters first then use a brush to freehand over the stencil bridges..
Very nice, like!
At the Izaak Walton Inn at Glacier National Park you can sleep in a caboose or even a locomotive.
Hi and THANKS.
I would love to see that CB&Q Northern run again.
You never know about these things.....
Nice locomotive 346 nice-looking restored carriage or Passenger cars. Nice work on the videos toy man you know a long time ago when I was real little still a kid I've always wondered if there was ever be a running big boy at least I get to cross that off my bucket list. You guys have a good weekend
Rains have finally arrived. Cooled off finally. Welcome monsoon season!!
The wood replica used to be in a town about 8 miles from me
I saw it at the "cars of the stars" museum in Buenna Park. Really cool!!! Eve has boiler tubes so it looks correct taken appart.
Several railroads do this. Durango and Silverton did for a while. Really want to try it.
Hi Karen and Dale,
Thanks for sharing another greAt adventure with us.
Train
By the way this is a fun museum in Southern California to visit:
www.tehachapidepot.com/
I love rio grande southern locomotive #20
Be great to see it running again. Back in the motel days 20 and 346 were both running all the time. 20 was used to tow 346 over the rgs. Wow!!!
Seeing all that equipment makes me say, “I hope they can be whipped back into shape”. I think someone can get them back in shape eh?
They are making strides all the time. So much to do...
What do you guys think of what happened with the 844 yesterday and will you guys do a video on your thoughts
I know that if you go to north Carolina go to spencer and Wilmington because there are a few museums
So many great ones. St one today! Portland Oregon
At 5:25 what is the name of that beautiful music? It’s beautiful!
Hunter L. Terrell hi! I call it “ken Burns’ because it sounds like the stuff he uses. It’s a reworked library music tune from SmartSound. We buy all our music from them.
Toy Man Television alrighty thank y’all! I get a lil’ bit time-hypnotized when I here instrumentals like that hahaha!
Nice caboose...cabooses...cabeese? Thanks for the video once again!
We're sticking with cabeese. Just rolls from the tongue betterer
Thanks'
Have you gone to the gorge town loop?
Dude!!!!! Another fantastic video as always. Just a quesrion, but are you two planning on coming to the national train show in KC? If so, would love to meet you two in person.
Wow! Another amazing video! I loved seeing everything that you had shown. Was the Uinta 50 a part of the original Uintah Railway?
You wrong about no 20 no 20 is the locomotive that played in Casey Jones
Are The Steam Engines on the North Freedome Rail museum in Baraboo Wis Running?
Don’t know.. anyone know?
I was there
We love this place!!!
How was ABQ
Having just seen this (10/1/2022), I was wondering if you’ve been back to the museum since this video-and if so, did you see the last mainline wigwag signal? It was removed I think March 2022 and was supposed to go to Golden…?
No to both. I did see one on the UP in utah in about 91.
New info on the new steam locomotive "in the works", ONLY (for now) for Toy Man Television. A hot summer coming up. Contact us via Ridgway RR Museum.
WOW!!!!!! We wanna ride. You know, when the time comes.... WOW!!!
Will they donate no. 20? Like how they donate no. 40 to George Town loop?
DroidityDoesYT 20 is back to the museum and running!! First ran about 3 months ago.
Toy Man Television I know that, I have lots of video of her! But no. 40 ran in 2013 and was restored they’re in 2013. Then seemed to be donated to the George Town loop.
DroidityDoesYT not sure but as far as I know 40 belonged to Georgetown before. Perhaps they paid for the restoration?
Toy Man Television weird.. I’ve seen pictures of 40 near those tanker cars? Hmmm
the Denver rio grande is getting more engines running
you should come up to Nebraska to see Nebraska's ONLY railroad tunnel Now bypassed in the 1980s
I'd like to build a replica of Goose #1 but make it so I can run on both 3 foot & Standard Gauge hehe
btw? the average MPGs on the Gooses is 1-3 MPG! LOL
hey Caboose 49 is available to buy in G scale!
Did you hear about the lady that got hit by 844
Yes. Sunday’s show is about that.
UP 844!!!!

Next trip you can highlight the layout in the basement. Also, the library has some great resources, and great people as well. Thanks for the video, guys. www.modelrailroadartist.com
I whould love to see that in real life
Head over! Golden Colorado
Great video. Did you hear about the incident involving the 844?
NO WHAT??
Toy Man Television last night as 844 was returning from Cheyenne Frontier Days, a woman jumped in front of it near Henderson. She was thrown into the air and killed instantly. It has been ruled a suicide.
Good God.....
Toy Man Television yeah, I really feel for Ed and the whole crew. I’m met them last year and they were all very friendly and helpful. The good news is, the excursion planned for today is still on schedule.
So far they are calling it a suicide
I spoke to this guy, and I asked him on 191 being restored and he told me that it woundn’t run due to the boiler being made out cast-iron. And running it now would be bad.
Edit: I will ask about the other locos but for now who knows?
I love 191. But if it never runs who cares? It’s amazing just sitting there. Runs is better, but not important.
Toy Man Television I’ll ask another guy about the union Pacific switcher 0-6-0 for being restored.
Toy man television Could you make a video of the Colorado railroad museum again
We do need to get back there!!
Did you know that 844 hit a person yesterday
DREADFUL!!! We have a thread in the comments here. God...... Hope the crew is getting over this.
FACT: 191 is the only surviving locomotive from Como
Yup. But it’s a beautiful thing
It’s too bad now that a neighborhood has been built around it
Yes but it’s still better than EVER
I am helping restoring a California Zephyr Dome car call the Silver Palace
I got on a train today. No I didnt
I do every morning.... In my mind.....
