WOW!!! Thank you, Toy Man. A UP Big Boy - NIce Job of filming - I watched both videos. NO - this was not boring at all: its exciting to see one rolling down the tracks - even better when its under power. I really enjoy your viseos. Thank you for your time & effort. They are wonderful.
Bob Weber we have the “big boy update “ as well. From about 6 months ago. And we have new footage which I cannot show as yet. Darn!!! But the locomotive is going back together fast! We talk about that on tomorrow mornings show. But it’s all rebuilt and going together fast. Should be testing in about 3 months.
I "Discovered" these Big Boys videos while 'screwing around' on the computer. After these years of watching your videos, I am surprised I didn't find them sooner. Just checked out my two ex-UP Speeders to see how they survived the winter, got me into a train mood. Hope you come to the UP Convention in Denver this summer. I hope to be there with my O Scale (2rail) UP4005 Big Boy
At 5:50 is Paul Guercio from the Rail Giants museum, standing between tender and cab. He is largely responsible for 4014 being in a restorable condition.
That's great to know! I may have meet him back in 199? when I went to the museum. (when I took the stills on the video) I met a man who was painting things and getting things ready for the fair. I spoke to him about the Big Boy and talked about what was being done to get it running and keep it in good shape. But he could not get into much as he was getting things ready. May have been him!
Didn't see it move, but got up close and personal with it Monday at Union Station. Man is it awesome. Your friend's narrow gauge is amazing and it makes me feel a lot less guilty about dropping a little over 2 G in one week for 3 O gauge locos.
Yes, Rob is a bit over the top. But he owns Santa Barbra so I guess he can afford it. Hes very cool. Bought the ranch (Rancho Margerita.) to grow grapes and make wine but they won't let him because its a Indian site, so he built a railroad instead. I like the railroad more. those are Disneyland cars! Boy are some people pissed they sold him 4 cars. Whatever.
Toy Man Television Some people make a living out of being pissed. Me, I see it as conservation. I mean where are all the Nautiluses from the 20,000 Leagues ride?
Andrew Jackson In re reading your post, I'm not sure which narrow gauge you are talking about. Rob's is the full sized 3 foot gauge, There is also Steve's On3 on the site. Anyway, both are great! I have the plans of the Nautilus which I blew up to 4 feet long. I was planning to build it that size. Never did, but darn that would be cool.
@@ToyManTelevision Yes it does. Like you mentioned I never thought I would see one moving let alone be rebuilt and actually run under it's own power. I live on the east coast but want to see her run in person one day. It's on my bucket list.
NoOneEpic Wow, I'd love to. I was out that way about 14 years ago, but didn't make it over there. I just don't seem to get east very often. Love it though. I did follow that engine moving in the mags. WOW.
Now realize that the diesel in front of Big Boy is the number 4014 and the one behind Big Boy is 4884 just like Big Boy which is 4-8-8-4!!!!! Cool right?
As y'all know by now that ain't me pictured in the profile photo. I must admit my wife puts up with a 'whole-lot" when it comes to my train hobby. Don't get the wrong idea, my Bride enjoys "O" scale Lionel-go figure! I lost track of the Big Boy once it left the park in Southern California. Thrilled to bits, the Toy Man, as achieved such a high level of, "Screwing around" when it comes to chasing this major chunk of railroad history. You Go-Toy Man!
Thanks!! Keep at the O scale!! My friends and I love that, hence the name O scale guys. Not to say we don't model in other scales, but O is the bomb!! the videos here on the page of Steve's railroad are O scale and I have a video about the O scale Guys too!! ENJOY!! (best way to keep your bride happy is get her a train. Worked for me)
So looking forward to it running in 2019. They are just finishing up rebuild on 844, total rebuild of the boiler. All 3 engines are getting rebuilds on their boilers.
Im a steam guy too. I see diesels every time I get called to work. But if you have to be in a diesel.... C45AH (any of them 5500s to 2700s) is the only way to go. SD70 T-4 3000s are okay....but SD70ACs are crap! Even the heritage units! (Paint is the only thing good on those) On the Big Boy.. I got to be the train a ahead of the Big Boy leaving Colton in 2019. ( after the Pomona Chapter trip to Colton/ Cajon pass trip.) I was going to Yuma on a manafest train. I was clearing the way! Sooo many people!!! Some may have video of my train in San Timetao canyon. Lots of people were already set up and I'm sure they did test shots! I got to Yuma 2 hours ahead of 4014 and was able to video it going across the Colorado River. But then I went back to my room...it was like 100°f already in Yuma. Sam
And now.... parked. Damn Covid. But Ed is already putting together next year. Much like this year that never happened. We really wanna see it in the Bay Area.
The Golden spike should have included SP4449 on the west side, instead of two UP locomotives ( although both can be there ). But UP is not a fan of anyone else's steam! I don't think the daylight has ever run on UP or former SP except on interchange to other non UP tracks. Sad.
the yard in North Ogden was BIG BOY's home base back when he was built. BIG BOY pulled trains out of North Ogden through Weber Canyon and over Echo Pass to Evenston then through Alta Tunnel to Green River. after a stop in Green River to fill up with fuel BIG BOY went past Table Rock and through the Red Rocks to Laramie. at Laramie BIG BOY got his final servicing then into his kingdom Sherman Hill itself. under power BIG BOY used Track 1 to Hamossa Tunnel but today BIG BOY uses Track 3 since Track 1 is a steep 2% grade when the trip is over BIG BOY pulls into his stall in the roundhouse in his home town of Cheyenne the location of Steam Shop. BIG BOY has not been to Steam Shop in 50 years so it is sort of a home coming for him and the citizens of Cheyenne are waiting for him all of them worked on BIG BOY back in the day or heard legends and they will be excited when they see BIG BOY pull into Steam Shop Yard in Cheyenne.
Mr. Toy Man, Look at any stack train that rolls along. Count the number of containers on that train and that's the number of semi's that are taken out of interstate transportation. It's cheaper to bring sand off the Cumberland Plateau than it is to truck it in, so yes trains are busier than they've ever been. There are a lot of short lines around the big class I railroads don't do a lot of little lines.
Mike Lcml5c...... You Almost "sound like" someone who thinks that All semi's and trucks in general should be off the road... are you? The containers do NOT represent semi's taken off the road... and Why should they be? Those containers are off of, or going to the docks to and from China (mostly) and other global destinations. The trains are fine for large bulk movements, but when an in-country shipper needs a load picked up and on its way to his customer pronto... they don't call the railroads, they call brokers to send a semi, and it will be at their dock loading and on its way within hours... not days or weeks later. You cannot put rails and loading facilities for them at every business, it is totally unfeasible and impossible to do so.... so what's the big deal about getting the semi's off the roads, that some people seem bent on as their life's mission? There is Not One single solitary thing that you own or eat, that was not transported by trucks.... they're an absolute necessity to the daily operation and survival of this.... and Every other country in the world. Don't get me wrong, I love trains (especially Steam and 1st Generation Diesels) and not only come from a long line of railroaders in my family, but worked on a class 1 (train crew) railroad years ago, myself..... but trucks are a very definite, necessary and integral part of our overall transportation system here in the US and every other country in the world.
BTW I went to Locomotive Engineer school in Salt Lake in Nov. 2004! Cool place...went to Ogden and promontory (no steam running but saw them in the not round house)
steersman 1812 I thought that was cool, too. Not sure if the Diesel 4014 was renumbered because it was towing the BB or if it was the luck of the draw?

HI! Its Richard Band music from Smart Sound. LOVE IT. You need to pay them for it on their web site. Just buying one is expensive! Like 50 bucks! But you can then use it forever, (buy out) BUT you cant let others use it. AND they filter, if you use their stuff, it takes them about 5 minutes to catch it. The way I buy music is buying 10 CDs at a time. For about 600 bucks! But that makes the CD cost about 60, so about 6 bucks per cue. Better than 50! But 600 bucks!!!!!!
I had an HO Union Pacific 6 wheeler locomotive train set with at least 50 cars LOL I loved that 20 ft long train set when i was younger growing up :-)

Right?! Amazing. Who’d a thunk it?
I'm really surprised that many people at the end came to see the Big Boy. Also great video.
Thanks. I can't imagine how many will show up in 2019 for the big 150th party, assuming that everything goes well.

Am I the only one that saw the Northern #833 sitting there?
+Crossties Cool loco. Was moved to Ogden from a park in Salt Lake City something like 25 years ago. Or 20? Don't recall. But looked great moving!!!
See I thought the 844 and the 838 were the only surviving northerns
Not sure if there are others, bet there are. Don't know though.
where
Not sure. But I know of 3. 844 in Cheyenne. And they have a "parts" loco there too. Not sure of the number. And 838 in Ogden.
Why does they have the same number 4014 on both train?
Dang: Incredible catch.
hey you mentioned that you might be allowed back into the shops and get an eye-ball for an update. well, any update? it's been quite a bit since the UP Steam Shop posted anything here on youtube.
i like steam trains too
+Dominik Polska Better than diesel. I think. Love steam!!
Toy Man Television Same here, steam engines started America
Something tells me there was a reason they chose the diesel at the front specially.
So how did they operate the the whistle and was it a coincidence that the first train was 4014 to
compressed air. Not shur how that rig worked..
4:42 Obviously the large number is the locomotive's road number, 4014.
Below that however, there is 4-8-8-4 (the wheel configuration)... But what's the rest?
4-8-8-4-1-68 (23¾ 23¾ / 32) 540MB
*UPDATE*
I did some digging...
Still have no idea what the 1 is.
68 is the diameter if the driver wheels in inches!
23¾ is the Cylinder diameter in inches. Wow... I guess it's repeated, because there are two sets. Makes sense.
32 is the stroke of the piston
The 540MB... Still not sure. Closest number I can find is 540,000 pounds of weight on the drivers (adhesive weight). Don't know what the M or B mean, if that's the case.
The 1 means it's from the first batch of Big Boys that were built in 1941, MB refers to the type of stoker the locomotive had when it was in service.
Now is there any chance that the bigboy will run through Oklahoma the 844 did a year or 2 ago and I didn't get to go see it it actually stopped next to a school by the rails and they got to go see it I saw it on the news
I bet it does... After spending this kind of money, they will want to show it off.
I ❤ STEAM TRAINS
LONG LIVE THE BIG BOY
Soon!! It’s looking so good!!!
would've thought the whistle would be louder
They are running in from compressed air right now. Gutless!!! NOW, when its on 150PSI steam!!??? OMG, stay back. Like 145 Db SPL!!!!!! It will shame Led Zeppelin

Been in contact with them but no. They were running until now, and may still be to busy, but we will get up there as soon as they get settled in with 844 and get back to 4014. So much to do!!! And they needed to get 844 back on the track first.

Took them off the save the pistons. As I recall they are on top of the tender.
