  • Confession. I'm not patient enough, smart enough, energetic enough in my own strength, and at least a couple times a year I want to quit homeschooling BADLY. In this, a day in the life of a homeschool mom, I'll share a little bit about why and how I don't give up homeschooling my children.
    ----------
    Did you know my video's now have SUPER THANKS? Each of my video's takes on average THREE days to script, film and edit using professional equipment; if they are a blessing to you and you'd like to help keep them coming you can! At the bottom of each video you'll see SUPER THANKS and you can make a donation to help me make more videos! Every donation is DEEPLY appreciated and goes towards production and time costs.

    ABOUT
    I'm Shayla, an earthy mountain mama to 6 wildlings, & a blessed wife to one since 2004. We're a big, Jesus loving, God fearing family & we love to laugh! Hubby & I are second generation homeschoolers, & have been homeschooling our children from the start-since around 2009. We were raised unconventionally, and our parents utilized homesteading before it was trendy, and it was a goal and dream of ours to do the same-but it's only been recently that we have been able to bring this dream to full potential. Last year the Heavenly Father brought to life our dream that we've had for over 25 years and enabled us to begin buying a mountain homestead fixer upper, so join us in the adventures and fun here at our new homeschool/homestead! Be sure to subscribe. In 2023 my goal is to upload once a month.
    Video's you can find here that I enjoy creating include;

    I’m nearly 48yrs old and started homeschooling my own 1st and 3rd graders just 3yrs ago and NONE of my years are the same or gone smoothly. I also have a 7th grader who still attends public. I also have a 26yr old plus 3 grandkids from her which I help with as well. Thanks for your raw authentic transparency 🙏

    I just discovered you channel and love this! Most homeschooling UA-camrs I've seen only post the perfect moments. This feels so much more real and relatable. It is a huge blessing to be able to homeschool, but it is still hard at times. So worth it though. ♥️

      Hello! I agree, it is hard at times but the good does outweigh it. So glad you found me, it's nice to have another fellow homeschool Mama here!

    Hi Shayla. I think every homeschooling mom experiences the desire to quit.
    I love this real-life style video. Homeschooling isn't all rainbows and butterflies and homeschoolers should show this side of homeschooling more often.

    Thankyou 😅 we are week 7.
    -We really found the 6week adjustment phase true. Still having teething trouble but pushing through. Staying true to the 'Why'.
    -Structure with flexibility. I loved you had a timer. Harder subjects in the morning. So good.
    Great encouragment.
    -2-3pm crash time. Yes so true. I wondered what was happening. Thanks for the tips. 😅
    We found exercise at the start of the day, has been the trick for sitting down for school work.
    Prayer- yes🎉🙏 His Power. ☝

    I did put the couple kids into school mid year last year who were giving the most resistance. It was wearing me down so much I couldn't give what I needed to to my kids who were willing and ready to be taught. It gave our home so much peace and those kids are thriving out so we reenrolled this year. I don't plan to keep the first grader in public forever, but I admit I love that she has now learned how to learn, and how to read (because she has to). She is starting to get bored of the long days so I'm hoping by second grade she and I will both agree she can rejoin our homeschool 💓

    Thank you for being so transparent! I’ve been having a hard week last week with homeschooling and it’s purely just me putting pressure on myself and feeling like I’m failing them. I felt exactly how you felt to the point where i had an anxiety attack on Friday. After rest, talking to my husband and friends I’ve been feeling a lot better .

    Watching you jump around from kid to kid to assist whomever needs help...that's definitely me! It seems like as soon as i get done helping 1, the other 2 need my help and then rinse and repeat. It's just funny to me, made me giggle. God bless you!

    You’re so inspirational. And thank you for not editing out the whining/attitude of the reluctant homeschooler 😅 I feel so normal! 😂
    Thanks for keeping it real

    God bless you for this open and heartfelt video. I have been homeschooling my girls since kindergarten. Like you, I have a list mile-long of reasons why I do not feel comfortable with traditional public schools. I think I go through this same battle every year. Giving my children the attention only a mother can give, being able to choose the curriculum that works best for each child, and having quality time can't be beat. Thank you for encouraging me to continue. I appreciate knowing that I am not the only mom with these struggles. Thank you.

    Best thing was someone told me to entice for motivation like I have a momma that has an eighth grader she motivates them with a coffee date and school at the public library. It helped her feel like an older big kid and not always home or in her room. Then her daughter got into making different types of coffees chai teas and tea in general. Ended up creating a history of teas and coffee with speaking creativity. 🎉❤ I hope and pray momma this year goes smoother for the rest of the year. Like she said the first year I have never yelled as a momma than that first year.

    Thank you for being so venerable and showing a real life homeschool day. As a homeschool mom myself, it is so good to see that my kids aren't the only kids who are sometimes reluctant to do their school work. There are definitely days that I want to throw in the towel and quit as well. Then I go back and read my list of why we homeschool. I pray that God will give me and my children the ability to focus and finish the day at hand. Honestly, there are times that I myself wake up on the wrong side of the bed and I'm the one who is grumpy because I have a growing todo list and I'm overwhelmed. God reminds me that I set the tone for the day and to look to Him first and then go about my day with joy. The joy of the Lord is my strength. Be blessed. 😊

      Thank you for sharing this, Amy! Yes, overwhelm can be such a big precursor to waking up grumpy for sure! I've learned that when that happens I need to just sit down and write everything overwhelming my brain down and this helps me so much. It allows me to relax a little and prioritize what's first. I love how you go back to read your list of why you homeschool. I need to do that more often! Thank you again for sharing!

    I am so thankful that we all have the privilege to homeschool the way our family does best. I appreciate seeing the way you do things Shayla. I have learned that I can't homeschool without the plan, I seem to forget things and then don't feel that I know where everyone is. We started a new schedule this year that has been very challenging but I am so thankful. I was doing so much with each of my kiddos that we were schooling all the way up to bedtime. We had lots of breaks but I didn't take the time to think through when, how, or what everyone would be doing while I was working with a child. I have only one reader. I have two almost reading but with the special needs of those children I was working myself to the bone. This then made me not like schooling, lots of health issues for myself, and guilt that my children weren't at a "certain level". That is why I now really focus on the joy and privilege. All of these things that you are sharing Shayla are encouraging me to slow down, understand that it is a process, listen to my inside mama heart, and most of all enjoy being home and schooling my sweet children. My five children are getting me one-on one each day. I want to speech trust to them and show them a fun way of learning so that they want to learn and serve Gods kingdom.

    This is so encouraging! I have these same feelings ❤️ I noticed that schools are all the same- home and public. The teachers don’t even always finish everything.

    • @mountainhomesteadfamily
      @mountainhomesteadfamily  Рік тому

      That's true, schools only require 75 to 80 percent of the curriculum to be done, probably because so much is repeated each year.

    Amen!! We are all a work in progress. I jump and figure things out on the way. We tried many curriculums. Some were great some I wasted $ on . Tge 2 top favorites were Prairie Primer. The kids LOVED that year. The other one was the 3 year cycle we did in Mission Faith Foragers. 2 have brain / eye issues. My youngest was a 24 week micro preemie. These were q room schoolhouse style. Lots of outloud reading and lots of great discussions.

    I can’t even imagine teaching 6 grades simultaneously. A school teacher only teaches one grade each year. You have a very difficult job if you do it right. And homesteading too? Wow.

    I highly recommend the 3rd grade Good and Beautiful Math. We did Teaching Textbooks at the beginning of the year and I loved it. However, we stopped because my daughter just wasn’t getting it. My husband is a Math professor and he looked over it and is impressed with it.

    Do you have any videos or good resources on how to homeschool a child with adhd? My son was recently diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor do to the also recent diagnosis of Neurofibromatosis. This comes with many learning disabilities including adhd. He is 6 and I'm struggling so hard to even know how to teach him (and cope with the reality of this lifetime diagnosis). Any resource recommendations would be be greatly appreciated!
