    ***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
    Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
    We put out 2 new videos every week! Tuesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

    Your pigs are beautiful and very healthy-looking! I think that this is an ideal breed for your homestead....it is great that they graze and don't destroy the land....your feeding and watering stations are perfect!...it is so nice that they are not constantly standing in a mud wallow...it keeps them nice and clean....keep working with your piglets and they will respond to you as your other pigs have...watching your video makes me want to raise Idaho Pasture Pigs! I love the way you care for your animals...great job!❤

    My husband and I have been tuning into your channel for a little over a year now. We have learned so much from y’all about; chicken tractors, about raising meat birds (we just ordered some for the first time ever!}, about freezing fresh spinach, and now about feeder pigs (maybe next year). You guys have such an adorable family! You two are so great about the way you teach and share on your videos. We are 60ish and bought our 6 acre farm in the west central mountains of Idaho just over 2 years ago. We moved from our city home in Utah where we had fruit trees, a large raspberry patch and a sizeable garden on our 1/5 acre home where my husband had been for 25 years. I hadn’t heard of homesteading or permaculture but, I have had a strong desire to be as self sufficient as possible for as long as I can remember. As a city girl I wasn’t quite sure what that looked like. Well, because of your amazing videos we are having the time of our life creating our happily ever after homestead. God bless you for taking the time to share your knowledge and experiences. We just love you and have enjoyed welcoming you into our home. I’m blind and my husband is a disabled vet so wen have a few extra obstacles to overcome. Y’all have helped us bypass many of the mistakes we would have made had you not enlightened us. We appreciate the love and laughter you share in addition to the knowledge. Thank you! We look forward to your videos each day and reference your past videos frequently! We hope you feel the love from BLIND FAITH FARM in Idaho!👍❤️

    I have bred and raised IPPs for several years. Love the breed... friendly, easy on your pastures but can be hard on houses. We use the heavy polycarb calf dome huts placed on wooden sled platforms (we built). They get the pigs up off the ground and allow us to drag them around the pastures with a tractor for better rotational grazing. The huts are almost indestructible and will last for years.
    My boars are like big teddy bears, always wanting a belly rub. I have no fear of being in the boar paddocks, however, I never turn my back on them. While not overly aggressive, if sows are in season, they can get territorial. They are unbelievably strong and even the small tusk will injure you quickly.
    Great looking bunch! Charlie reminds me of one of my breeding boars, Oscar... Oscar Myer. Good luck!!

    All of our pigs have been chatty (hamps, Berks, yorks & durocs), though maybe that’s because we have always chatted with them 😆 I can’t believe they have left your ground alone haha that is pretty amazing!

  • @RickP654
    @RickP654 4 роки тому +36

    Hey Kevin, Since your boar hog like to sleep on his feed station so well, you should try putting him on a floored shelter. You could build a back wall in it also for the harsh winter months. You may also consider a closed in floored shelter for the sows as well. The little newborn piglets will need a rail around the wall about 8 to 10 inches off the floor and standing off from the wall about 6 inches to give them a place to go to keep momma from laying down and squishing the babies. You may already know all this stuff, I don't know. At any rate you and yours stay safe and keep on making these great videos. God bless you all.

      I agree, the pigs probably had a floor in their house at their previous home, to keep them up off the cold ground.....great recommendation about the safety rail around the Sow's house, for farrowing time.

    A pigs favorite thing is to be scratched! Used a dried out corn cob as a scratcher. They get so excited when they see you coming with one. We fed ours the table scraps and dried corn plus the cobs. Make him a scratch post out of a tree stump with the bark on. Always touch babies from head to tail, down the legs and too their feet from day one. Get them used to the corncob scratcher. It desensitizes them and you can do anything to them because they’re used to it. They also need a mud wallow. Just wet the ground until water pools up. They’ll take it from there. Because pigs don’t sweat, they can overheat easily. A wallow in the shade cools them all summer.

  • @sagansrun2932
    @sagansrun2932 4 роки тому +2

    Suggestion.
    Put a skirt of wood around the trough so the food doesn't get lodged under them. Make it at an angle so you don't have a 90° corner too. This way food won't go bad or wasted because they can't get to it.
    I would put a roof over it too so rain can't get on the feed that is left in the trough.
    Put a drop down door in the back that you can open to put the food in the length of the trough so you can spread the food evenly in the trough. Put an angle on the roof with water diverter with drains on both ends so rain water doesn't collect behind the roof where you put the lift door is could get some kind way to direct the rain water away from the feeder rain gutter diverter type thing.
    Or if you want to make a mud pit for them. Divert the rain water back in pen in an area that is away from feeder and fence.
    I would put the watering. Device up higher.. mouth high so they won't be kicking dirt into it. Again make it to nothing can get trapped under or around the waterer without 90° angles. This way you can keep it clean with hose or pressure washer once in a while.. maybe once a month. If you don't your wood will start rotting attracting bugs/mice etc.
    Could put gaps in.the feeder deck to allow water to drain too.. doesn't have to be much.. just enough to allow the deck to stay dry and clean.
    I live in Texas I sure would like to have 3 of them. One male 2 females.
    But not so sure how they would travel all that way to Texas. I'm 60 miles south of San Antonio.
    That would be a long trip. It would have to be in early spring, so they wouldn't get too hot in our heat.
    We would have to protect them from the huge ferral wild hogs we have here too.

    Since you're going to be using Myrtle and Mildred as breeding sows, I imagine you'll be keeping them for quite a long time. Have you considered getting them some enrichment toys? Pigs are very smart and clever, and they would benefit from environmental enrichment and stimulation.
    Edit: Now that I think of it, your viewers would probably love to see your pigs learn to do tricks. That might be a fun task to give your girls.

    Hi Kevin & Sara! I LOVE your videos and have learned so much from you! Especially about gardening! I know you guys are used to just raising feeders and therefore they dont require much maintenance....but now that your raising breeders they do require a little bit. Please dont forget to keep up with their hoof trimming. Im sure you've trimmed your goats hooves, its basically the same thing. Im sure you will LOVE your IPPs as much as we love ours! God Bless!

    They seem absolutely great! So glad it's working out for you. Edit: just an idea you may want to consider raising up some breeding pairs as you get established these are very hard to find

    Good to see you raising your own food. It’s pretty scary these days with farmers dumping produce and milk due to transportation issues and other issues undisclosed. I’m really concerned about where my next meal is coming from and when

    My dad would not let us name our piglets until we figured out the perfect names. We had 3. Ham bacon and sausage. Lol

    Can you do a video specifically on your platforms for the pigs. I'm really interested in building them.

    Your pigs are doing great in their new homes. Thanks for sharing your views. I live in the city so can't even have chickens, but I enjoy watching y'all raise your own food, both meat & produce. Have a Blessed day.

    I shared your baby animals video with my preschool class. We are currently learning online. I tasked them with coming up with names! So far suggestions were Piggly Wiggly and Porky and Patience and Portly! 😀 Thanks for great content!

    Looks like Charlie uses his coop for an itching post as well. To bad he doesn't have a stump or post in there to use for itching. If he doesn't destroy his hut it will be all good. God bless.

    I think a cute name would be potato or spuds, hence the fact all they are Idaho pasture pig. What ever the name they are so cute and fun to watch .

    I've been keeping purebred Kunes for the last 2.5 years. I love their personality, easy handling, grazing qualities, etc, etc. But, I do wish they grew faster to make them more practical for meat. The IPP sounds like a great option for getting the best of both worlds. Thanks for the video!
