Glad you have joined the community, while the pigs sure are great, the community is definitely one of the best parts as you already saw from working with your breeder! A good rule of thumb is to not retain more than 25-33% of your litters as breeders to help working towards improving the breed each generation. There’s great info on both the IPPBA and IPP registry websites(and FB pages) for piglet evaluation, and I’ve got a 4 part video on it over on my channel, so hopefully those can help ya out for your next litters!

I love the IPPs! My in laws (who we currently live with in central tx) got 10 berkshires, 7 gilts and 1 boar for breeding and the rest plus 3 red wattles for meat and I gotta be honest, I was annoyed when they first said they were getting pigs because of what I've heard about how bad they smell but turns out I absolutely love them! They have so much personality and are so cute. I know each one by name and have cared for them daily.
Needless to say, I will most likely breed pigs one day when we have our dream homestead. For now I will use where I'm at as my classroom to learn all that I can on someone else's dime. 😅

Watching UA-cam, reading books, budgeting, learning to money a little money through a side hustle, etc are all skills you’ll need on the homestead.
We have so many side hustles I get confused. Haha. But we love our IPP side hustle for sure!!

I am a very big fan of Duroc pigs. I've never had an issue with them not being docile and my grandmother's hanging weight on an older sow she had was over 600 pounds. She was just an enormous sow at over 800 pounds live weight. I also prefer letting the hogs actually mature. Killing them within a year to 18 months just isn't going to give you their full weight. Typical slaughter age should be 3 - 4 years, at least in my opinion. In the case of my grandmother's hog, she was going on 6 years old at slaughter age because she wanted to breed her. Typical litters for her were over 12 piglets. One time she had 18. She only lost maybe 2 in her entire littering age. It's a good reason why to stagger ages on hogs, that way you always have one of slaughtering age for meat.

The coolest thing is, IPP’s do have duroc in their breed. But without the long snout. So that is one reason why it was a great pig to help the docile-ness of the IPPs.
They are made up of: Berkshire, duroc, and Kune Kune. 😁😁👍🏻👍🏻

You mentioned that there were restrictions with breeding. Do you have any direction with this?
Hey Heather, he’s referring to the restrictions of making sure that the piglets saved back to be registered breeders are the best of the best as for meeting breed standard. While it’s important for all registered Breeds that you only breed the best of the best, IPPs are a fairly new breed(released in 2007) so it’s even more important that we work to improve the breed towards the breed standards (which can be found on both the Registry and Association websites) with each generation. Our property at the moment is about 60% wooded. So we are raising IPP's mainly rotationally in the forest with lots of spent hay after our cows go at it. Its been an excellent way for us to cut our feed costs.

@BetterTogetherLife I am asking because this breed is meant to be raised on Pasture, hence the name "Pasture pigs" Not trying to bash, just wondering if they had access to a Pasture for grazing as that is what they were bred to do.

Are these pigs good pigs for woods cleaning?
They are pretty good. But not as good as the larger breeds of pigs.
@@BetterTogetherLife Ok I'm thinking the best pigs for me will be ones that can work the woods but also don't get too big so I can butcher and process them myself.
@@KyleLeeWoyote I have mine in the woods! IPP can really do well in any conditions. It is that you may just have to buy more hay for them than someone who has them on pasture. Mine have cleared out over grown woods with briars and poison ivy!
