- Welcome! These clips are from a large video collection that is now being converted from VHS/Beta to digital many from the 70's, 80's and 90's. SADLY, I DON'T HAVE THE ORIGINAL AIR DATES! There is some viewing quality loss from the original video source due to the age of the tapes, but the performances are preserved and still a joy to view. I'm finding many lost performances from vintage R&B, Soul, Pop, Broadway, Cabaret and other performances. This channel will be the Ed Sullivan channel for the digital generation, something for everyone to enjoy. Many of the performances will be seen for the first time since they were originally televised. I will be adding many musical performances from a variety of sources that I hope you will enjoy. No pitching, pocketing or auto-tune, just pure talent.
In 1981 before the show there was wide speculation that Andrea would be unable/unwilling to perform as she was struggling with the high notes. As everyone can she she totally nails her performance, which explains the audience reaction mid song at 0:48.

Anthony Mauro she was four years older than when she played the role, which might not seem like a lot but most of our voices change significantly between 13 and 17/18 years old, speaking and singing and it impacts how one might handle the high notes of a difficult song. Andrea’s voice actually changed for the better in some ways, her vibrato “smoothed out” as I’ve heard it described, but it naturally deepened a bit. She may have had to do some training to hit those notes and maintain that powerful belt.
“Speculation Andrea would be unwilling/unable to perform as she was struggling with the high notes.” Total jealousy and misogyny right here. If she didn’t hit a note in rehearsal, who cares? The audience didn’t applaud because she got through her “struggles.” They applauded because she was fantastic. No one would ever make a comment like this on a fantastic Michael Crawford appearance. They would just say how amazing the Phantom was. Men just have to tear down women even when they think they are praising them.

Well she was nominated for Annie but her co-star Dorothy Loudon won that year.
She was not going to beat Dorothy Loudon for the award. Not a chance. Dorothy easily got the best reviews of the whole show and her reward was well earned. Listen to her sing "Little Girls" on the original cast recording. Her line "Someday I'll step on their freckles!!!" was one of the funniest lines of a song in Broadway history largely because of Dorothy's delivery.

@Snopes Shop Blame the show's producers. Back then, actors were nominated for Lead and Featured Actor/Actress awards based on if their name was placed before or after the title. Andrea and Dorothy's names were both billed before the title, hence the competition. Besides, The Tony nominating committee was not known for consistency. Nominating William Daniels for Featured Actor instead of Lead for 1776 is a glaring example. Sadly he was billed UNDER the show's title, hence why he got shortchanged.

Andrea McCardle will forever be the yardstick that all others are judged by. Outstanding Voice.
Notice how the larynx is totally stabilized, in the middle and the neck goes wide. Shoulders and belly go down. Deep vowels and vibrato everywhere! Always moving the breath with fully supported power! No mic. A flawless technique in an incredible voice. There really are no words. She reaches out and grabs the audience by their hearts.
Where the heck is her Tony? One of the best Broadway belters ever. So clear and concise. You can hear every word and note perfectly. Love her later on playing “Girl of Tomorrow” in the Disney rendition. A role mar famous by Laurie Hope Beechman. A Broadway force.

SPECTACULAR VOICE! I remember when the upcoming new Saturday morning cartoons were coming out in the 70s, and she sang a rendition of Come Saturday Morning on a promo for the cartoons on a Friday night, with different words, that was outstanding. I've been looking for it for years.

I agree. Each time I listen to Andrea sing I tear up. I listened to her sing Tomorrow and Maybe more than a gazillion times as a child on my record player. I couldn't get enough. Then Over the Rainbow in the Judy Garland story. I am so happy she is still singing. Her voice is amazing and she deserves all the happiness she can get with the beauty she has put out into this world and the dreams she created in the hearts of young kids everywhere back in those early years. xoxo Andrea!

That was such a shitty movie considering all the talent involved.
She was totally miscast, however, I can't think of anyone else at the time who could even remotely play Garland. Her style was long gone by then. Blonds and boobs ruled the day.
Was also thrilled to see Fil of Wings of Pegasus analyze this video. This performance deserves to be known and enjoyed forever.

Andrea McArdle was the best Annie hands down. What's funny is that, since my real life name is Andrea, a teacher that I had known since I was in 2nd grade who was the chorus teacher (and directed a bunch of plays/musicals) would call me Andrea McArdle because of this actress. :)

I saw it in 1979 I think Shelley Bruce had replaced her. I paid 7.50 for an orchestra seat. Golden days of Broadway before GREED took over.

It was a showcase of best performances by females of the past. She was 17 here but was 13 when she played Annie.
She’s the original. This was just her coming back for nostalgia a few years later.
Andrea was the best Annie but in Rainbow she will never compare to the young Judy Garland ! Annie was in annie in 1977 a great job she did Rainbow Movie 1978 made for TV but she was not really Judy Garland even Judy Davis and that other person could not compare to Judy but the best acting was in Me and My Shadows when Tammy Blannche played the young Judy and Judy Davis as the older Judy but none of them could sing thats why they used Judys voice ! In the Andrea and newer version the women both sang in their own voices but no one will compare to the real Judy Garland !
