She was not going to beat Dorothy Loudon for the award. Not a chance. Dorothy easily got the best reviews of the whole show and her reward was well earned. Listen to her sing "Little Girls" on the original cast recording. Her line "Someday I'll step on their freckles!!!" was one of the funniest lines of a song in Broadway history largely because of Dorothy's delivery.
@Snopes Shop Blame the show's producers. Back then, actors were nominated for Lead and Featured Actor/Actress awards based on if their name was placed before or after the title. Andrea and Dorothy's names were both billed before the title, hence the competition. Besides, The Tony nominating committee was not known for consistency. Nominating William Daniels for Featured Actor instead of Lead for 1776 is a glaring example. Sadly he was billed UNDER the show's title, hence why he got shortchanged.
Where the heck is her Tony? One of the best Broadway belters ever. So clear and concise. You can hear every word and note perfectly. Love her later on playing “Girl of Tomorrow” in the Disney rendition. A role mar famous by Laurie Hope Beechman. A Broadway force.
In 1981 before the show there was wide speculation that Andrea would be unable/unwilling to perform as she was struggling with the high notes. As everyone can she she totally nails her performance, which explains the audience reaction mid song at 0:48.
Anthony Mauro she was four years older than when she played the role, which might not seem like a lot but most of our voices change significantly between 13 and 17/18 years old, speaking and singing and it impacts how one might handle the high notes of a difficult song. Andrea’s voice actually changed for the better in some ways, her vibrato “smoothed out” as I’ve heard it described, but it naturally deepened a bit. She may have had to do some training to hit those notes and maintain that powerful belt.
“Speculation Andrea would be unwilling/unable to perform as she was struggling with the high notes.” Total jealousy and misogyny right here. If she didn’t hit a note in rehearsal, who cares? The audience didn’t applaud because she got through her “struggles.” They applauded because she was fantastic. No one would ever make a comment like this on a fantastic Michael Crawford appearance. They would just say how amazing the Phantom was. Men just have to tear down women even when they think they are praising them.
Never heard of her but I would bet my last dollar that she is unmatched by any other Annie. Just incredible how perfect her voice is. And that power. Wow.
Notice how the larynx is totally stabilized, in the middle and the neck goes wide. Shoulders and belly go down. Deep vowels and vibrato everywhere! Always moving the breath with fully supported power! No mic. A flawless technique in an incredible voice. There really are no words. She reaches out and grabs the audience by their hearts.
I thought the same thing. It makes me think that holding onto a dog’s leash would have added distractions for her while singing. I know the dog was very well trained and she was taught how to handle him but there must’ve been a few times he went off-script. It would have required extra poise and concentration for any singer, let alone a young girl.
SPECTACULAR VOICE! I remember when the upcoming new Saturday morning cartoons were coming out in the 70s, and she sang a rendition of Come Saturday Morning on a promo for the cartoons on a Friday night, with different words, that was outstanding. I've been looking for it for years.
Saw her in Rainbow 🌈 the Judy Garland story years ago never forgot her voice she is absolutely amazing Thank God for giving her such a wonderful talent and allowing her to share with us. So thank Andrea from a fan in Ireland 🇮🇪 🙌
That was such a shitty movie considering all the talent involved. She was totally miscast, however, I can't think of anyone else at the time who could even remotely play Garland. Her style was long gone by then. Blonds and boobs ruled the day.
Perfect marriage of artist and material. It’s impressive that she would have gone through a vocal change at this point, and that she sounds this great.
I love this video of my favorite actress Andrea McArdle the original Annie my favorite musical of all time in 1977 and I still have the CD of the musical and the movie with Aileen Quinn!!! I love it!!! Thanks so much for posting this video!!! I love it!!! I love the 70s!!! Can you dig it!!!!
Andrea McArdle was the best Annie hands down. What's funny is that, since my real life name is Andrea, a teacher that I had known since I was in 2nd grade who was the chorus teacher (and directed a bunch of plays/musicals) would call me Andrea McArdle because of this actress. :)

My wife and i have arguments over this one. I say that Andrea is the better singer in Annie and my wife says it's Aileen. Yes Aileen has a great voice but Andrea belts it out PLUS even though she is 2 years older than me i had a HUGE crush on her...i win
Andrea was the best Annie but in Rainbow she will never compare to the young Judy Garland ! Annie was in annie in 1977 a great job she did Rainbow Movie 1978 made for TV but she was not really Judy Garland even Judy Davis and that other person could not compare to Judy but the best acting was in Me and My Shadows when Tammy Blannche played the young Judy and Judy Davis as the older Judy but none of them could sing thats why they used Judys voice ! In the Andrea and newer version the women both sang in their own voices but no one will compare to the real Judy Garland !
You can’t remember and she might have been rude to this one dude, so you say she’s a “particularly nasty” person? LOL. Her reputation is exactly the opposite, she has decades in the business and tons of people who say she’s lovely. It’s likelier the dude she was rude to deserved it.
Nobody has...and nobody ever will, sing Tomorrow better than Andrea at any age

I love how she sings “CLEARS away the cobwebs and the sorrow” ...it’s so distinct and just bowls me over every time.
I know right! Truly amazing! ❤️
Yesss!!!
She nails it all
Yesss you have a beautiful ear for noticing that!
Andrea should have won the tony award! She sings this song better than anyone that I’ve ever heard!
Well she was nominated for Annie but her co-star Dorothy Loudon won that year.

@@Quartzquiz333 but she wasn't the leading role. She should have been nominated for supporting role. The show was called "Annie"

She absolutely should have won the tony for what she brought to theater with her performance
She had such great musical intuition at such a young age
In 1981 before the show there was wide speculation that Andrea would be unable/unwilling to perform as she was struggling with the high notes. As everyone can she she totally nails her performance, which explains the audience reaction mid song at 0:48.

Your comment made this even more magical. Thank u!

ANDREA HAD THAT THING THATS CALLED " THE IT FACTOR"
ITS SO CLEAR EVERY TIME SHE SINGS THIS AT ANY AGE IT SOUNDS THE SAME. THATS TALENT
She sang this song better than anyone else who ever played Annie.
Her version is untouchable. Pure, powerful, unselfconscious and brilliant.
No pitching, pocketing or auto-tune, just pure talent.
Andrea McCardle will forever be the yardstick that all others are judged by. Outstanding Voice.

The talent is so raw. Pitch perfect, controlled vibrato, total connectedness throughout passagios. Wow, to have been alive when this was broadcast
I’m in an Annie rabbit hole and just WOW. Andrea is absolutely untouchable with singing this song as written. Perfection
I’m in the same rabbit hole 😂
Same 😭
Brings back such warm memories of that musical. She will always be THE ‘Annie’.
Here after Fil of Wings of Pegasus did his analysis in May 2024. First time hearing this version. Great doesn’t do it justice!
Me too, just discovering. Loved the audience’s spontaneous mid-song ovation around 0:45
That one hand up like she's still holding onto Sandy with the other. 💖💖💖
Yup, it's probably muscle memory from years of ending the song holding onto Sandy's leash.

Every time I hear her sing this I get chills!
0:46 - They like me! They really like me!
hahaha she definitely seemed to enjoy that moment and who can blame her. she’s nailing it and she knows it.
Best version ever. Just her voice. Very little arrangement. Excellent.
She gave me chills! Amazing
Just watched the 1999 Annie and was so moved by the "NYC" Broadway stage singer that I had to look her up. and look what I found :)
Yes it was nice they gave her that moment in the movie version
Phenomenal! It is truly her song!

I love history home Hollywood her
I saw it in 1979 I think Shelley Bruce had replaced her. I paid 7.50 for an orchestra seat. Golden days of Broadway before GREED took over.
PRO!
This Is the versión in the film the Adams family 2,great and beautiful version
I did at 13 years old almost aulditioned
She should've been in the 1st movie.
She was too old by the time the movie came out
If she had the role for the original movie, in my opinion, she would be better.
She was the best Annie but she had grown up too much when the movie was made.
She was 19, the movie was filmed a year after this video. There's no way.

She has said that her high school graduation that day. She could go party or go home to bed to be ready to perform. She went home to bed.

Bit old for Annie but great voice
It was a showcase of best performances by females of the past. She was 17 here but was 13 when she played Annie.
She’s the original. This was just her coming back for nostalgia a few years later.
The best Annie ever. Ariana grande has nothing on her. Not even close. Actually Ariana is horrible in comparison
Omg Ariana Grande can’t even compete with Andrea McCardle!
Why attack another singer to show how great she is
She always looked like Jimmy Baio from Soap.
He played the teenage Tate boy.
Same sleepy bedroom eyes like Billy Joel.
Talented performer but it appears she's a particularly nasty person off-stage after hearing about her on KIRO Radio's Tom and Curly Show.
