Andrea McArdle also portrayed Judy Garland in a biographical movie; I believe it was called Rainbow. It might be interesting to see a comparison between the two voices.

So many memories! It's only now that I'm in my 50s and have had years voice lessons that I can fully appreciate her skill, even as a child. Wiki says she's only 5 years older than me. I remember trying to imitate her even back then. I could never figure out how she had such power. It was only many years later, after (nearly) ruining my own voice through poor technique, when I began taking lessons and learning to properly breathe, that slowly learned what she was doing. (A lot of it is natural, too. My voice is higher/lighter and I will never have that kind of power.)
Aw, this made me cry happy tears. I've never even seen the musical and I know/love/sing this song. I had not seen her since she was a kid. I am so glad to know she knows how to sing for real, and isn't faking it. At least one thing from my childhood didn't have to be destroyed!

  • @vib80

8:53 There's a whole lesson in psychoacoustics in this middle-8. The way she gets things to build... the first two "day" and "grey" are both G#4, but microtonally, she makes the second higher. Then at the end, you got three phrases all ending on C5... she knows it needs to build, because it's heading to the big note. So for the first C5, she slides in from a little flat, the second she hits right away so it sounds like a bigger jump. And then we get the third pure without vibrato, which makes it sound brighter and more energetic again even though it's the same note a third time. Then she raises energy again by bringing back the vibrato (technically, this is going back, but because its coming off of a pure note it feels like we're moving up again), and then a small climb for just a bit more.

If only producers were trained to think in this way.
This is what I find is missing from a lot of performances. Not only are they pitch corrected, they're also chopped up a lot and patched back together. The concept of a vocal line is just... so rare to find. People are using their voices to make sounds, but it doesn't really create a line in the same way. It's less "singy" to me.

Both my parents sang in theatre.

    • @buggyboogle9
      @buggyboogle9 Місяць тому +2

Yes. With very good stage actors too, they have to be able to project their voices. And it’s tough while also emoting..changes in tone, nuances etc. Day after day. That’s why stage actors are regarded as the best as it all depends on them. It’s the actors medium. Not like film actors, where you get an opportunity to do retakes and there’s edits - reason film is known as the director’s medium.
Tomorrow is a lovely song…so well placed in the musical…such a highlight.

Musical theater can do that. It's the nature of the beast to be melodramatic and very "scream-y" at times. But I love it. I don't get to be very expressive in real life, so I get to revel in it through shows. People don't like going with me because I'm constantly fighting singing (quietly) along. :)

In 1984, I won the role of Miss Hannigan and as a Sophomore in high school, I was over the moon that I beat out several seniors. Local newspapers came to interview us and rumors were that Andrea herself might show up 😂. Hilarious. Of course that didn’t happen but the newspapers were so kind to write that I was a Broadway star in the making. I am so glad you took up this suggestion!!! I saw Andrea McArdle for the 3rd National Tour of Les Mis in the US as Eponine in 1996 in Philadelphia. We were told the only time she would appear on the tour was in our city - I guess because it's her hometown. As we found our seats that night, whispers spread that she was having vocal trouble. There is a point around Éponine's signature song that the actress is expected to scream. She decided to hit a bloodcurdling high note that was airy and yet eerie as it reverberated through the theater. At the time I thought what a great choice she made. Full disclosure she's a few years older than me, and when she was appearing on Broadway, all my aunts could do was brag about her. I was at the time in musical theater, and I was so jealous of her that I didn't even want to know anything about her. When she would come on the news, I would leave the room - because she was a big deal, of course, in Philly - she was on all the news almost every night. So in 1996, and a little bit more mature, hopefully, I finally got to see her as a young woman, singing Eponine, making such incredible choices, and sounding so incredible. It was a great treat for me.

    Hi Fil,
This was an amazing analysis. Andrea was a powerhouse when she was in Annie in the 80s. And everyone wanted to sing like her and sing this song! Andrea really owns this role as Annie. As you say and point out, from a singer’s perspective she really has it all: the power, control, dictation, pitch and dynamics and sings it to the rafters. Fabulous job on this analysis Fil, and for appreciating the hard work that goes into performing on stage. It takes an extraordinary talent to pull off, acting, singing, and dancing all at the same time… fabulous and fun look at this incredibly talented singer. Thank you so much! Debbie☮️

There was one young girl of 8 who had the most amazing volume quite naturally and I remember thinking she would be heard in the back of the theatre no problem. for vocal longevity and purity of a broadway voice. Nobody compares with Barbara Cook who's coloratura soprano voice graced the stage in the early 1950's in Oklahoma, The Music Man, and Candide. She continued to sing in concerts at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center through until 2005 with her voice remarkably unchanged. Her one woman show won a tony nomination, a Drama Circle Award and Olivier award at 78 years old. Thereafter she became known as the quintessential interpreter of Stephen Sondhein and continued to perform through 2010. yet she could still belt out her soprano hits of the 1950's.

In 1977 myself and three friends took the train into NYC from Mystic, CT, just to see this play. Oh, this play was fantastic! She and the other children were incredible. They stood on the edge of the stage and belted out songs. So much talent on that stage.

Hey, Fil, have you ever compared Karen Carpenter's "Johnny Angel" with the original hit by Shelley Fabares?
The original Fabares version has a great back story. Basically she never wanted to sing and was forced to do so resulting in a huge hit for her and the producers.

OMG one of my all time favorite singers!! I had to double take when I saw the thumbnail because I’ve always thought she was kinda niche. Thanks for doing a video on her!

Fil, would you ever do a list of the 10 Best Pop/Rock voices - male, of all time and a female list, as well, and why? Would LOVE to watch that video.

She’s not changing the vowel, she’s singing’ way, oh’. You can really tell in the 2016 rendition.

Aileen Quinn, the girl that played Annie in 1982 film, sounded like she took voice lessons the day before she sang.

This reminds me of a comparison of Mick Jagger singing As Tears Go By in his early 20s, and then the live performance captured in Martin Scorsese film, in his late 70s (now still hitting it in his 80s).
I actually prefer the older performance. Some voices improve with age, like a good wine. And some don’t (Paul McCartney). Jagger has a famously ridged physical and diet routine. He should publish that in a book!

I'd love to see you do this with Judy Garland's Over The Rainbow. 1939 Oz and 1956 Ford Star Jubilee.

I am reminded of how many teachers and young girls in groups on elementary school playground during recess just singing that song every recess! Also Jason Alexander performed the same song in an episode of young sheldon when sheldon experienced stage fright - was sort of cute lol
