  • Weightless workouts seem to have become increasingly more popular over recent years, with creators such as Emi Wong and Blogilates taking this market by storm. I've received a few comments recently asking about how effective these workouts are and I figured I'd give my input! Do they actually work?
    I will credit Emi Wong for including some dumbbell movements in her workout, particularly the chest press as it's a fantastic movement.
    Let me know your thoughts below :)

    *Disclaimer: Unfortunately, the UA-cam algorithm thrives on titles and thumbnails that could be perceived as clickbait. Although I find this particularly distasteful, as a means of reaching a new audience or encouraging my current audience to invest their time into my videos, I must work with the algorithm rather than against it. Statistics have highlighted just how effective aligning titles with the algorithm is and although this can be frustrating for many (myself included), I will always ensure that my titles:
    1. Never promote false promises or unrealistic expectations.
    2. Will more often than not ask a question.
    3. Are worded in a manner that although might be perceived a certain way, are still open to interpretation.
    Appealing to more potential viewers gives me the opportunity to further the spread of what I believe to be useful information surrounding the topic in question, in addition to a positive message which often surrounds mental health, with the goal of helping as many people as possible.
    It should also be noted that the majority of my videos are based on audience suggestions. ~90% of my audience are women, therefore, the majority of videos are created to appeal to my dominant audience.

    As a Chinese women who is a part of a community of Chinese women who enjoys weight lifting, it is very common for my friends to receive comments about their muscles, mostly negative, like your thigh is too big or you appear mannish. The main stream aesthetics is still very limited to three aspects, looking pale thin and young(or the word can also mean, childlike), so women who don't fit into that aesthetic are deemed unattractive.
    And many of my friends have experienced very uncomfortable experience with men in the gym, like sexual comments or rude comments, which is one of the many reasons women are scared of going to gyms. (Hostile men are such a problem basically our group bans men from entering our group chat, because one of them tried to threaten and stalk one of the girls irl, there are some good men who were in the group and understand the genuine fear, so they decided to leave to create a safe space.)
    Anyways, I think the main factor is many Chinese think it's their right to comment on random strangers bodies and gym culture (like pretty much the rest of the society) is quite misogynistic.

      And one comment type I cannot stand is whenever a women appears to be muscular on social media, there will always be that dude who says "I can't overpower her if she is my wife". I'm like, she probably is doing it for her not for beating people up and why is domestic abuse the first thing that come up in your mind when you see physical power. (Apparently men keeps leaving comments like that under Weili Zhang's social media she had to clarify in a interview that she only beat up people if she is paid and those commenters should give it a rest, and she doesn't believe violence is the solution to any problem especially in relationships. She was a UFC champion btw)

      Nobody should need to overpower anybody in a relationship and the fact that their minds go to needing to overpower/control their wives is… gross. You bring up something that hadn’t really occurred to me before, which is: why are they suddenly afraid of of violence when they see physical strength? Early into my relationship my bf asked me to flex and took a picture of me which he put on social media and all of his friends were reportedly worried for his safety, telling him that guys can get beat up too and that he should come to them if I start physically abusing him. It’s good to look out for your friends but you don’t see the same comments about women dating super muscular dudes that are way bigger than they are. The size differential and potential to be physically abused doesn’t seem to matter then, only when there’s a perceived “threat” to the man.

    I am chinese and my parents grew up in Hong Kong / China. I think the reason why asian women especially from China don't do weight training and is frowned upon because it meant that they had a hard life doing the rural work like farming and raising the family and livestock and it is a sign that you are poor. Also the older generation want their daughter to be married off to a rich husband so want them to be slim and soft body which they think is more desirable to men. However this way of thinking is being phased out as I am seeing alot more asian women in the gym in Hong Kong.

      I am a female Chinese-Canadian. I have Chinese friends who studied here and abroad. They tell me that they don't do weight lifting for fear of gaining muscle to make them look less feminine and hence, less attractive to a Chinese man. I see this view quite prominent among my Chinese friends and Chinese society in general. At my gym, I've seen Asian women working out and do so for lower body moves or using machines. I've not really seen many use actual weights. Being raised in Canada, I don't share the same view that gaining muscle makes us less attractive.

When I started lifting and progressing surely I gained muscles and some fat too along with. And I was no more that thin and started looking a bit broader too in gym clothes. Weightless exercises for sure helped me get back into the gym after I was hospitalized, to regain strength and mobility in general. However it did not at all change my shape. As a former dancer, I know that the only way to change your perceived shape ( the skeleton indeed cannot change) is change in body composition (loss or gain of fat), stretching the muscles over a long period of time and weight bearing exercises to build the muscle. Thank you for the realistic information! :)

    When I started working out, it was at home because of Covid, Cassey was my go to fitness influencer, but I started going to the gym 2 weeks ago and I realized how weak those workouts were, and how strong I am. I’ve had more progress in these last 2 weeks than in the last 2 years i’ve been doing home workouts and I think constantly about how my body would be looking now and how much stronger I would be if I had just headed to the gym in the first place. You have to be aware on who you follow and if they have any certifications on personal training because, otherwise, they could be just delaying your results.

Your take was holistic and kind and actually really informative to me as someone who does occasionally follow these workouts. The point about certain moves targeting the shoulder more than any arm muscle really tracked for me. A lot of weightless arm exercises put a lot of strain on the shoulder joint, but I assumed it was just me and limited mobility issues.     I really appreciate how you included cultural difference too! As a very short asian woman (150cm) with more of a skinny fat body type (~44,5kg), I used to do home workouts without weights only bc I was scared to look too bulky/ manly so I did blogilates and emi wong workouts and many more; I followed videos which emphasized on getting a petite body frame which just didn't work out bc it's impossible to change your body frame;
    Furthermore I felt I didn't really made much progress - especially strength wise - like my arms were very weak so I decided to start weight lifting in a gym 8 months ago and I really wished I'd started it sooner! I love weight lifting so much, been going consistently 4x a week, and especially my arms became so much stronger!^^ the thing I learned is that it's so hard to get bulky as a woman so there's rlly nothing to worry about that xD
    I think whats helping me is to maintain a balance with weight lifting and staying in a calorie deficit until my goal weight (~40kg) and then just maintaining my weight to prevent looking bulky but stay strong!^^
    The thing is I also have very broad shoulders and a big head which used to bug me, since I felt I didn't look feminine enough (and sometimes I still feel insecure about them); especially when trying out clothes I have to get a bigger size or choose more flattering cuts T.T
    I also envy taller people in genereal, bc as a short person any fat or bulk will be more visible which is not desirable for me but at least I've come to accept it and yeah just work on it (currently the nutrition aspect) >_<
    All in all, seeing more muscular woman in media (such as Ellie in TLOU2 or Ihwa from the Webtoon Hero Killer) made me appreciate muscles on women and changed my perception that only 'petite/slim' frames are feminine UuU

    Thank you for making this great video. As a Black American woman living in Taiwan for 17 years, I was so happy you brought up the Asian culture and its aversion to women doing resistance training. We have a growing LGBTQI+ community here and many women in particular don’t want to look like a ‘T’ (tomboy). It’s unfortunate because the exercises I see my Taiwanese sistahs doing are pointless, and I tell them so. But they say it makes them feel good, so who am I to say anything else? They understand my points that arthritis, cholesterol and many other health conditions all of us middle-aged women face could change if they decided to do different types of workouts, but in the end, they share (nicely) that although they think I’m pretty, they don’t want to be dark, strong-muscled and full-figured like me! Westerners would be offended by this, but I'm used to the culture and we laugh it off. The willingness to learn and an openness to change help move the dial in a different direction. Your video is the beginning. Most white men wouldn’t dare bring the subject up in this social media climate, but you had the courage to do so with finesse. Respect!

    I resonate with the comment on the Asian culture and the standard of Asian women needing to be smaller, shaming resistance training because it makes us “look like a man”. I really appreciate you acknowledging this, growing up I was always told I looked like a boy, I was too big to be a girl, I was a pig, etc etc. As a midsize Asian women, going back to China only made it worst as I was told I had an undesirable body and it just ruined my body image for the longest. And I think that’s why I followed Bioglates for tje longest because I wanted to look like her because shes Asian like me. While I still respect her, I feel like her videos aren’t for me anymore. It did take me a while to love my body again for what it is and go back into weight training.

    Asian woman here and can definitely resonate about the cultural differences! Growing up my mom and aunts would be like, “I was a size 0/00 before I gave birth” so it was always instilled in me that the goal was a petite figure. I’ve gotten more into resistance training, and overall more movement, and have gone from being the chubby kid to now generally more active, it shows in my body. there’s a lot more praise (which really made me nervous that one day I could lose that praise if I don’t keep it up), but also a lot of messaging of “you’re doing too much”. I could see why weightless workouts would appeal to our demographic; it often feels like a get-fit-quick gimmick to try to hack our bodies without taking the time to really do our research or be patient about making lifestyle changes.
    A potential future video idea: mismarketing of HIIT workouts. It seems like nowadays as long as there’s an interval, it’s “HIIT” without consideration to high intensity. Maybe what does it mean physiologically if a workout is high intensity?

      I was a bit taken aback because though our misconceptions arent our fault they can hurt the people all the same and since we wont always have ppl to sit us down and calmly tell us why we are incorrect it probably helps to realize what can hurt ppl and what cant on our own and try to develop a sense of universal conscience/understanding and learn
      more on our own without having to rely on social conditioning and our mentality to follow other ppls opinions alone to judge whats right and not, obv we may need to have a base though, since we cant know right from wrong without inspiration but internet can pretty much help us get exposed to different mindsets as long as we r willing to search for them.
      And not that it will make us all misconception less but may be it will make us more open minded and understanding of things..

    I like these type of bodyweight exercises for when I’m sore and tired but need to move my body. While we can’t change our skeletal structure from it’s genetic expression, exercise or the lack of it dramatically changes our bones: from density to the amount of marrow within them; uneven muscle tightness or strength left for long enough will deform the bones.

After consistently doing the 3 weeks out of 4 of the beginner workouts, I was just completely done with zero results. I was so disappointed and thought that I'm just that horrible at exercise. The flap exercises managed to make my limbs hurt a lot, and some moves were so difficult to execute that I did them wrong and probably did more harm than good to my body. Thank you for being so respectful in this video! once in a while I will do a blogilates video when I can’t make it to the gym. Even though her exercises look so easy, they can be very hard and make you super sore because you’re encouraged to make it hard for yourself by stretching and flexing to the max while you do the movements. So I think the most important thing you addressed is that no matter how hard you make it for yourself, and even if you flex and stretch so hard that you’re losing your breath, it doesn’t mean you’re doing an effective workout. Additionally, the moves she encourages are sometimes unconventional where you wouldn’t typically ever move your body in that way, so just by performing that kind of awkward range of motion makes you sore. But anyway overall I think ppl should at least try these types of exercises with an open mind and that it’s beneficial for people to not get stuck thinking that it’s good to move their bodies in just one kind of way.

Mum of 2 teenage kids but to be honest people think i am one of them myself due to the fact that i am fit and looks much younger than most women my age. I am not trying to brag, my point is, it is true in our asian culture and community, being slim slender and toned (and somehow pale) is desirable hence receive good comments. And as a dancer in my background i do often received nice comments about my shape. And lately i gained abit more muscles because i train with weights now as opposes to bodyweight only (thanks to the pandemic) and people (the asians 😅) has stopped commenting on how i look. I guess they hesitate because i look abit more bulky? 😂and at one point, my own mum commented about my body and i just said to her," thanks mum, i am much stronger now.". There will always be a stereotype, not just in one culture, in any culture. And we cannot control what people think or says i guesd, however what works for me is to change my mindset and HOW we responds to their comment. We can use their comment (that was intentionally to be negative maybe) and use it for our gains? To let them know that we are happy about our body, feels great and strong (and mind their own business?) 😄

    First of all I want to say, I really respect the things you said, and I think that you have a lot of good thoughts. Especially knowing that everyone’s case is different. My story is a bit convoluted maybe? In 2014 my car was hit by a train, and my left shoulder was thrown forward violently out of socket, actually breaking the rib behind my collarbone with the force of it. After that happened, after a month of physical therapy, I started working out in the pool. I was unable to even lift a one pound weight. However, I kept working out in the pool, and I lost 30 pounds, got super toned, I even had ab definition. However, I started having s lot of health problems, first complex migraines that made it so I couldn’t drive, then severe chronic pain with fibromyalgia - I couldn’t (can’t) even walk sometimes. That all began in the same year, 2017. So my workouts pretty much ended. I stayed ok weight-wise until the end of 2019/beginning of 2020, when I started a medication that made me gain 20 pounds (hormonal weight gain, not too many calories). I started going to the pool again in January and was really seeing some toning, and lost ten pounds. But in March, the pandemic happened. And I have severe ocd, so I wasn’t going anywhere. I kept having chronic pain here and there, and depression, so I gained that ten pounds back, and even though I was eating 700-1000 calories per day (I even counted my coffee creamer), I could not lose the weight. I’m getting close to the end. So I finally started going to the pool again, and I was pretty excited, but now a new medication has given me bad insomnia and I fall asleep while I drive. So no more pool. Again. Anyway, I started doing the blogilates workouts, and I have to be careful with my shoulder until I start working out more (no weights, no push-ups, no planks, etc). I have mixed up her weightless arms workouts, doing one long-ish one every other day (I tried doing it every day, but my shoulder), and my triceps are super defined and hard as rocks, and my biceps are as well. I have lost the small rolls that were under my shoulder blades and at the sides of my waist. It really is quite remarkable. I can wear backless clothes again. Additionally, I do her lower body workouts as well, and my butt is fantastically toned again, and my legs are much, much slimmer than they used to be. I can wear my cool pants again lol. It is very true that as you get further into your fitness journey, you have to add more to it to see greater results. And as soon as my sleep gets worked out, I’ll be at the pool again. But for now, as someone who had gotten quite soft, I am seeing huge improvements from the blogilates workouts. Anyway, so I do agree with a lot of what you said, but I did want to tell you my experience with it as well.

Something I’ve learned from you is that “just because it hurts or is hard doesn’t mean it works”. Curious if that also applies to soreness after working out. Thanks!

      I wondered the same thing a while ago!
      The pain felt in muscles during exercise is likely due to some or other acid being released. (Not exactly sure why, someone can help me here) However, I know it does not idicate anything in terms of the effectiveness of the movement.
      The pain felt after a workout is something called DOMS (delayed onset of muscles soreness) usually this happens when a movement pattern is new to you, and (maybe unfortunately?) does not indicate an effective workout either. If you do the movements more often, for a longer time (weeks - months) the pain(doms) should start going away.
      This does not mean your workout isn't effective anymore, it just means that your body is used to the movement pattern.
      Your main indicator of effectiveness is your ability to progress. Meaning, you can lift more weight, do more reps, or find the same weight/reps easier
      Hope this helps!
      Ps. Please correct me if I am wrong :)

    I have a question for you or just anyone in general to answer. It's been on my mind for a while, I've tried to look it up on google etc but I couldn't find a specific answer. Anywho does portion size matter if the meal itself is low calorie and healthy? Like per-say I had some greek yogurt (220 grams) which was 100 calories, with 200 grams of strawberries 64 calories and 150 grams of grapes 99 calories, now the bowl it was in itself was pretty large and managed to fill it all the way up. I also had 2 slices of brown seeded bread which was toasted on the side (It was relatively healthy as well). Now I'm not sure if this itself is a larger portion but if so, the calories of together (For the yogurt, fruit and toast) is around 480 and manages to keep me full til 5-6pm when I eat dinner. So i'm not sure if i should cut down on the portion or what as it is healthy and the calories or the whole thing is pretty low.

      There's a lot of cardio in ballet, it's very intense as you train for hours regularly just doing pliés at barre for example in order to strengthen the necessary muscles, before you then move to floor work which is constant cardio and balance. It can take years to go en pointe as you need super strength. Also the set positions for your arms alone are surprisingly exhausting to hold for a long time! 🥵 That might just be me though! 😂

      @BestLifeMD Рік тому +4

      @rhiannon1170 Рік тому

      It's usually due to gaining and ironically also losing weight, as they often become more obvious due to weightloss? Exercising the back of the arms and shoulders may help give a bit of support, and stretching regularly helps in general. Pilates with Moving Mango and Anna Mcnulty has helped me a lot. Can also try TrainLikeABallerina?
      I will say, stretch marks do heal and fade, they go from that purple/red to white translucent. Drinking water and looking after your skin will definitely help, but also it might just take time.
      The best routine I have found is applying a butter, like cocoa butter or oil, after a shower or bath in order to lock moisture/water in. The butter/ oil creates a barrier that helps prevent immediate loss of hydration, which gives the skin time to absorb the water and goodness. Hyaluronic acid helps lock in moisture too? Ethique has really good balms that contain good ingredients and work great. I haven't found collagen helps however? Hope this helps? ❤️

    As someone who's realistically never going to go to the gym regularly throughout my life, I'm happy to do weightless exercises to build muscle to a limit and then maintain. It's similar to yoga and the benefits of that from an anti aging and mobility perspective are studied and experienced. I think this video is a good warning for people looking ti grow aesthetically, but beyond that I think majority of these ladies viewers are fairly intelligent enough to not believe wild promises through clickbait and titles.

    I am a 76 yr young woman who has been working out for about 45 plus years. I am still doing weight routines and cardio, but am including routines just using body weight and enjoying them as an addition to my daily workouts. I am wondering if you have heard of Lucy wyndham Read and what do you think of her routines. I think we need to do workouts that we enjoy and also can see results, or we will tire of them and not do anything. Enjoy your videos and you make many good points. Thank you Moe (Maureen)

    What’s sad is people expecting changes to their bodies doing these weightless workouts. Usually, people have so much unrealistic expectations doing these exercises. They’ll wonder why nothing is happening and like myself before. I blamed my genetics for not being able to build as much muscle as I want. I discovered the truths about lifting through you and other fitness UA-camrs who shed light to these so called “Weightless workout”. It wasn’t me who has the problem. It’s these people wanting more views and money. Their greed is more important than us.

    I read about Rachel Attard and she didn't like the way she looked after lifting weights so she switched to weightless exercises because she wanted to have slender look even though she did admit she was not as strong as used to be. She looked great when she was lifting weights! Not bulky at all ..but then again that's my opinion and not her taste. Everyone's goals are different. For me lifting weights has huge health benefits especially for women going in to 40's/50's its part of the reason i do it aswell as for aesthetic reasons.

    • @austinhenshaw2140
      @austinhenshaw2140 Рік тому +2

      Spot reduction of fat isn't possible, it's going to come from your body overall through a caloric deficit. I wouldn't be afraid of gaining muscle on your arms, it is far more difficult to "get too bulky" if that is your concern than people realize, and more muscle will increase your basal metabolic rate so you can burn calories quicker, if that is your goal.

    Asian but not woman, afab here.
    Personally i'd say, the only thing worse than whole-heartedly believing your worth equals to how thin you are...is to know clearly that this is bull, but still have to starve yourself nonetheless. Just because it has to be done, whether it's to fit in or simply to not become disadvantaged.
    If it's even possible to occasionally find SOME gratification in the first scenario considering the human weight can indeed fluctuate downwards, I think anyone that ends up in the second situation will just feel like a nearly-dead mouse trapped in a maze with no exit.
    I think you're right. We can't live forever and it'll really be a pain in the ass if one can't even be happy with their own body during the little time they got.
    Random fact:
    When I started my fitness journey i got told that women (and afabs lol) can't get big (naturally). I have a lot of conflicted feelings on that half-truth. I called it half-truth, since its truthfulness really depends on what you define as big.
    Is it competitive bodybuilding level (i wonder how many bodybuilders are honest with being natural), or does it mean "anyone with a wider arm circumference than the image of a faceless woman on a popular but shady weightloss drug ad"?
    I feel like a lot of women felt disencouraged by that statement, if they want to get big. I also guess that a lot of women thought "well then i'm just gonna fuckit and pick up heavy weights" and discovered that yes, they can in fact, get big and ditched those weights in horror.
    But i also guess that, there may also be a big group of women somewhere who started with heavy weights, thinking it wouldn't make em big anyways, then found out that they can, but embraced that and continued.

    Basically , you aren't going to get a body like these weightless work out ladies bc they built their muscles in the gym, then switched to weightless and pilates for work outs that give less inflammation so they can appear more toned....but without the work on their muscles before, they would not have this appearance. People going into stuff like pilates as beginners with no muscle might not achieve their physical goal.

    I think a lot of people are misled by the idea that, if they follow these videos, they can look exactly like the instructor in the video. But logistically, it doesn't make sense to regard the instructors as the same type of body or skill level as yourself. And so, while it is disingenous of them to market these exercises as they do, the issue is largely the part of their fanbase that believes that they don't need to learn anything about how these exercises affect their bodies. And i think that's an issue that extends across the entirety of diet and exercising, where people will prey on others who don't want to do the research on what makes their individual body look the way they want, and they will serve as an easy scapegoat for when these methods don't help them in the end. There's a lot of work that has to go into knowing what your body can do and what are its limits, and I think a lot of people don't want to do that work. They just want to easily and quickly achieve their ideals, because it seems like it was achieved easily by people who match these ideals.

    This is a big problem in asian cultures. It's a cultural thing that you being white, ridiculously skinny (almost a chopstick) is considered to be beautiful. Also it's ridiculous, but it happens pretty often things like "if you're 155cm height your ideal weight would be around 50kg, but your ideal 'beauty' weight would be 40kg". Bc of these things diets/starvation (sometimes pretty unhealthy ones) are constantly promoted as a essential thing.
    Like c'mon asian people usually are skinnier, it's a ethnic thing but those standards are symply ridiculous.
    Also in Asia is very common comments like: "you've gained weight, do some dieting", "you're fat" or "nobody will love you bc you're fat".
