  • I've had lots of messages from people who want to hear my thoughts on Dr Klaper's recent video where he took an "anti-potato" stance. This video is my reaction to seeing his video for the first time.
You can find his original video here - • Potatoes - Are Regular...

Plenty of people including Andrew have lost a lot of weight and transformed their health eating only or mostly white potatoes. The proof is in the pudding. Potatoes are absolutely good for you.

Agree with Andrew's moderate view. There's no harm in what doctor Klaper says -- unless it dissuades someone from eating white potatoes for weight loss and health improvement, and only then if they go on to eat poorly because of it. And the truth is, that sort of person would probably eat poorly anyway if given an excuse. I'm learning that not all of us are able to make a sustained good choice to avoid toxic, highly addictive foods ("I'll just have ONE".)... Some of us are wired as addicts, we can't quit our drugs. 😟😥
Final verdict: nothing bad in this video. Let's hope he doesn't get a backlash from it though, hahaha.. the white potato definitely produces weight loss and spectacular healing for many of us former fatsos. I'm a yam girl, but my husband has lost 60 lb on those white orbs of satiation, and he's getting other health improvements too!

  • @CharGC123

I think the truth is somewhere in between because it's based on personal experience. I'm sure you know he did a part 2 in response to the hate he got, but for those who haven't seen it, here's my biggest takeaway... He said that when working with McDougall (who I'm sure will be getting some mail too!) there were always some T2 diabetics (who possibly had pancreatic insufficiency from over producing insulin for too many years?) whose glucose stayed way too elevated after eating healthy, but high starch/potato meals, and they weren't getting the expected weight loss benefits because of it. With the newer constant testing monitors they could clearly see the association, and these are the people McDougall sent to True North for a while to benefit from their lower starch diet or fasting protocols. Often this chance to reset their sensitivity allowed them to gradually add back more starches, but because we are all different and Dr. Klaper gets to see the sickest of the sick, he seems to err on the side of caution in giving out generalized advice. Much respect, a wise and kind soul.

This is why people hate dieting, there are always some kind of issue. I am glad Andrew and Dr. K are on here clearing this up.
I eat a wide variety of potatoes, I am not a fan of Russetts they are too bland for me but I eat others. Peru, I forget how many varieties of potatoes they have but those people don't have issues with them. Also, Dr. Greger did a video about putting vinegar on potatoes as it may reduce the glycemic levels, I recommend watching that one too. Thank you all very much for the comments, very helpful.

The carbs are complex carbs wholemeal bread, brown rice, wholemeal pasta, wholegrain and steel cut oatmeal, little bit of red meat now and again and lots of potatoes and other root veges as well as corn and plenty of fruit. I'm 73 years old and have been on this diet for over thirty years I run six days a week including a 15 km run. No blood sugar problems and no weight problems. Thank you, I enjoyed your review. I agree with what you said about the effect of fat on blood sugar. I think I learned that from Neal Barnard. So, when blood sugar goes up after eating carbs, too much dietary fat in the blood stops insulin from moving the glucose out of the blood. I hardly ever see this talked about, and I think people would benefit from understanding this.

5:45 Klaper sats avoid potatoes and starch if you’re obese or type 2 diabetic. This is so strange. Dr. Greger has a series on how fat can cause T2D. Neal Barnard MD as well. But if one’s T2D they could simply test their glucose 30,60,120 minutes after a potato based meal. Eaten without bad stuff like oil sugar should come down.

Potatoes once a month is so odd. Totally agree what he’s saying is so restrictive. You’d have to eliminate rice and many grains as well. Eating potato with skin you have the fiber and it’s scientifically proven to have the highest level of satiety. Totally disagree with Klaper here. You can grab a couple of small potatoes before heading out and you’ll notice you’re satisfied for hours. One of the best dietary tools out there.

  • @dreamofskye7400
    @dreamofskye7400 3 роки тому +3

I think dr Klaper speaks from the perspective of the preferred diet at True North. Which is the recommended amounts of legumes and gluten free grains and fruits and vegetables. If you would eat that and then add onto that lots of potatoes or even lots of any other starches for that matter, you will consume too many calories and you will gain weight. But with potato only diet you do not overeat, because your body resets itself to be able to stop eating naturally at satiety. So you will actually loose weight. Also the simplicity of this mono diet helps people stick to it more easily, because they do not get overwhelmed.

orthorexic! I had to look that one up… “obsessed with eating healthy food”…I can relate, as I had dropped white potatoes for sweet potatoes about a year ago after watching other videos about the nutritional superiority of the sweet potato.

      @eimearrosenicholl3734 3 роки тому +7

@@ScottCousland yeah. I have fallen into that trap before of being too strict. The problem with diet is there is a such thing as trying to be so healthy it actually ends up being unhealthy. I actually don't follow or listen to quite a few of the plant based doctors or influencers as I think some of them promote diets that are stricter than necessary for the vast majority of people and could actually make some people unwell. I also think it's just unrealistic and unnecessary to be that in depth about nutritional choices. Most of us just want to fuel up and then get on with living our lives and not sweat it over potatoes versus sweet potatoes-most of us have more important goals than nutritional perfection. The best diet is the least restrictive one that gives you the results you want.

I think the white potato has been so maligned by the media and regular doctors that I was disappointed with Dr Klapers response. I believe Dr McDougall (and Spudfit) on this one! Dr Greger does the same thing...sweet potato is better than white, and his daily dozen was as bad as calorie counting or counting fat grams. I think it is better to keep it simple and enjoy real whole plant foods and the weight melts off. The key for me is lots of non starchy veggies along with starches because I am a volume eater 😀😀

I was surprised that Dr. Klaper holds such a conservative view of the mighty potato. I eat at least a pound or two of white potatoes every day. I never get the sensation of a sugar spike. It's like they just fit right into my body without any fuss. Perfect fueling. (My last HbA1c test was 5.1). To me potatoes are delicious and they act as a governor on my overall food consumption. I couldn't eat sweet potatoes more than once or twice a month because for me they're too sweet. In fact I eat them much less frequently than that. In his Moving Medicine Forward educational series Dr. Klaper in the video lecture on obesity and type 2 diabetes repeatedly emphasizes that glucose (which is more than half of the sugars present in a white potato) will not make you fat. There is no enzymatic mechanism that will store glucose as fat. That can only happen with fructose. Also he goes to great lengths to explain how elevated fat in the diet as well as elevated protein are the culprits for sustained insulin spikes with the glucose spike being much less a factor. 'Spud Fit '(at least as I see it) is about understanding my relationship to food and for that it has worked well. Long live the potato!
I need to add a correction here. After looking at my favorite text on human metabolism, "Metabolic Regulation: A Human Perspective", by Keith N. Frayn, it turns out that glucose can be stored by de novo lipogenesis although apparently one has to really work pretty hard at it by overeating for several days (Frayn page 181).

I’m back onto the good old fashioned white potatoes we ate nearly daily growing up.
Does anyone know if the white potatoes sold at Costco are super waxy in comparison to other white spuds because they were so bloody creamy pressure cooked and puréed there was a party in my mouth! I did not feel grease-deprived.
In my opinion, sweet potatoes or yams are not as satisfying (satiating) as white spuds, though I may use them occasionally in a brownie or muffin mix. Also intrigued by the idea of grating raw sweet potatoes because I thought we are unable to digest raw spuds.
Regarding diabetes, I think Dr. Nick Delgado demonstrated in real time how grease impacts blood cells.
In a live broadcast Delgado drank a cup of olive oil and demonstrated the impact on his blood.
His cells were quickly coated in grease and Delgado suggests it’s the grease that turns cells diabetic.

I eat raw sweet potatoes 😅
I think it's really good! Cooked sweet potatoes or oven baked is too sweet for me.
But I can have sweet potatoes in soups too, then I like it.
When I was hiking in the Alps last summer I stayed at a place with food included, but rarely vegan options. I ended up getting sweet potatoes at the supermarket and a peeler and a knife, and had it raw in pieces. I also bought white potatoes and cooked it in the microwave.
Felt hilarious having paid for meals included and ending up eating very simple.
Anyways. I am also surprised by dr Klapers statements that potatoes should be eaten sparsely when trying to lose weight.
Like you mentioned, dr mcdougall suggests adding more potatoes if trying to lose weight.
For ppl not wanting to/ not ready to go all the way plant based he suggests adding like 4 potatoes a day.
And dr Klaper says here that white potatoes are not nutritionally deficient, but dr Mcdougall says they actually are extremely nutritious and even contains all the nutrients a human needs to survive!
Which are two quite different views.
It would be interesting to hear someone ask him what he based these statements on.

Klaper seems to be taking a "nutrient densitist" (a la Greger/Fuhrman) position here, either that or he was paid to fill up a certain amount of time so he's just talking to fill it.
By themselves, I would choose a good sweet potato over white potato anytime, because I need white potatoes dressed in some way to eat enough of them, whereas good sweet potatoes need none, but either way my body is happy.

Thanks Andrew. I found it confusing because at 10:30min Dr Klaper said potatoes won’t put weight on you. But eating ‘just potatoes’ only for periods at least you are cutting out the foods that may restrict weight loss or weight gain. Like you mentioned the proof is in the pudding. 😊

We have grown up on a planet were war is normal…in fact it is our default way of “solving” problems. Our level of fear is much, much, much higher than we perceive it to be…and fear is like a dimmer switch on our ability to think. I go over this in my free, 30 page e-book “The Ultimate Scavenger Hunt: A Journey From Fear To Trust”

And ofcourse I'm also among those who's been losing weight on a heavily white potatoe based diet!
Since I found out about wfpb through this channel I started eating lotsa potatoes early on. But the last 6 months or so I'd say potatoes are the base of maybe 90% of my dinner and lunches!
I haven't lost more weight but I'm already at a healthy weight, and didn't gain anything eating mainly potatoes.
I'm having oatmeal for breakfast and usually add pasta sauce to the potatoes.
Recently I was gonna make a test to eat only potatoes for 1 week, since I wanted to lose the few kilos I have left.
After 2 days I was starving and didn't have the willpower to continue at that time
My feeling was that eating only potatoes was way less calorie dense than my usual meals, including oat meals

That's a good strategy!! Like "nugging" you're behavior. Just as they place candy right by the cashier at supermarkets, we can make healthy decisions easier by having carrot sticks or something ready to grab in the fridge, first thing you see.
I started eating raw broccoli after your broccoli video!! Cutting it in pieces and add it to the potatoes! I'm lucky cause I really enjoy the taste of most veggies it's mainly that I'm too lazy to prepare somehow. And i did loose weight the last couple of weeks, first time in over a year! Could also be thanks to biking to work but probably the broccoli helped too 😃

I think there too much emphasis on current 'research papers' to determine healthy food choices instead of intuition. I'm guessing a lot of people do quite well on potatoes from the response to Klapper's video.

I have a lot of respect for Dr Klaper and when I achieved my first weight target I acknowledged Andrew, Dr Klaper, Dr McDougall, Dr Popper and Klaus Mitchell among many others. Dr Klaper made many good points about the way people eat potatoes and that's something Andrew has rammed home about as well. Dr Klaper has been known to savage olive oil when marketing firms promote it as healthy LOL. Because of Andrew I've had confidence to increase my potato intake. Andrew in the video spoke of respect for Dr Klaper. Also people should note the backgrounds of both Andrew and Dr Klaper. I don't know too much of why Dr Klaper went into Plant Based but Andrew's background into potatoes was explained as a poor relationship with food and Andrew has found incredible success. In my journey Andrew was the 3rd person I came across after Jon Gabriel and an all-fruit lady. Through the various similar type videos on UA-cam after watching Andrew I started researching Dr John McDougall and from there came Dr Klaper, Dr Popper, Plant Based News and other good sources of inspiration. I've just finished a big vege bowl for lunch that contained lentils, peas, corn, carrots, mushrooms, sweet potatoes and the most dominating food potatoes. Not a shred of oil but loads of herbs & cracked pepper. I even cooked the potatoes in some squeezed fresh lemon. Try that Andrew.
