I even eat more steamed potatoes if I just add onion & garlic powder! The closer I am to steamed veggies with no seasonings, the easier it is for me to use food as fuel, not fun. Thanks for this info!!
hiya, GREAT video, i have never done spuds only, just the only whole starch, but with non starchy veg, & fruit too. I have lost my 100th lb, 3y3m2wks, a couple wks ago, & never got into air frying, i pressure cook, in the ipot, or, i pressure cook them, in my pressure oven, so i am already eating them, the best way to lose weight. I think it took me longer, bc i was 66 when started, yo yo dieted 55 yrs, & have low thyroid. i like this vid so much, i am adding it to my description to my vids, hope u don't mind. i have very small channel, health & wellness & weight loss, & came back from being nearly bed/home bound & off 5 meds, my life is soo different, & loving living again. tnx Andrew. take care & keep on, enjoying spuds, super food. I eat at least 2lbs a day, over 2200 lbs in 3 yrs. 🥔🍠🥦🙏💙👍 i eat 1/2 & 1/2, white & sweet.
Thank you Andrew. The comparizon was an eye opener. Now I understand why I can eat more air-fried potatos than boiled and mashed and also why I might have problems losing the last 7 kg.
I am a potato snob I only eat Dutch Cream Potatoes and then you just mash and can add a bit of water and salt and they are yummy. You can eat without salt and still taste really flavoursome.
Another great video! A great way to get your chip fix is to steam, cool, chop, and then broil the potatoes for a couple minutes. You won't get the flaky, fluffy center, but you will get the crispy outside without losing a ton of water!
I have been wondering about this very thing. I couldn't come up with a way to test saiety myself. I knew I could eat a whole 5lb bag as fries/chips from air-fry. Thanks for the demo
This was really good! I knew it makes a difference how much water is left but it’s really cool to see and quantify how much the calorie density jumps such as in the case of air fried potatoes! Thanks for this!
Andrew, I made a chart with your figures . Can’t post it here, but basically air frying doubled the calorie density, and baking potatoes whole only increased calorie density by 16%. Boiling = obviously no change in calorie density.
A BRILLIANT video Andrew!!! Jeff Novak himself would agree 👍 And, Dr. Doug Lisle ALWAYS recommends 'wet starches' if weight loss is your goal. EXCELLENT!!!!
That was so informative! I am a spud queen lol and love my roasted garlic “chips” in the air fryer. I call them “fries” because I’m a Texan😃 The science is true, about steaming potatoes vs air frying. What I usually do is pressure cook for 8 min, quick release and refrigerate them, then I slice them into fries. They come out crunchy yet soft in the inside. That’s my fav. But, I did my own experiment with steamed spuds and lost 5 lbs in 1 week. If I ever need to fit into that tiny black dress….😜 I’ll do my spuds steamed! Thank you for explaining calorie density by weighing the potatoes before cooking them and weighing them afterwards🥔 🥔 🥔 💣 ass way to lose weight 🙂
Very interesting, never realized you lose almost half of the volume air frying! I do mine differently and curious if it makes a difference with moisture loss since they aren't baking as long... I usually steam up a batch of spuds in the IP and put them in the fridge. When I air fry, I just slice up a cold cooked spud, season it and air fry just until they brown some. Or sometimes I'll make a "smashed potato" ...flatten a cooked potato with a good whack of a cast iron pan, (great for venting frustrations too!) then grill both sides at once on my Griddler 'til brown, sorta like a waffle iron. The skin browns and crisps but the inside stays moist. Or how about microwaving? LOL I'll shut up now, I'm sure there won't be major differences, but this was enlightening, and got me curious! Thanks!
That was a great experiment Andrew and very enlightening. I usually do air fried once a week. I’ll keep it to that now I’ve seen this video. I do love them just boiled. So tasty. Thx. 👍
So glad you posted this. I've been making 1/4 wedges in the air fryer - but now I see the importance to mix it up a little. I like cooking with the sistema microwave steamer. And sure enough - I could only eat half the potatoes I could eat if they were air fried. Nice and simple explanation. Many thanks!
I know this is a bit away from the point, but I like to bake mine, then waffle iron them. I think I'll try that method with boiling them and see what happens. Thanks for the side-by-side!
another reason people might not be losing weight on this potato diet or a plant-based, starch solution, 50/50 plate, is if they've been doing calorie restriction & then they start eating to satiation on a whole foods plant based diet • there's going to to be a boomerang effect, but eventually it'll turn around
I like to cut my potatoes in half, add my spice mix combination (garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika and nutritional yeast) then put them cut-side down on parchment and bake. Depending on the size of the potatoes, they bake for between 45 minutes to an hour. This was so clearly explained and now I know why I can't eat as many boiled potatoes 😊 Thank you Andrew! Hello Mandy 👋
Hey Spud Fit, can you explain the deference in you weight in this video compared to now and what changes did you make in your diet since than? You look super fit here: ua-cam.com/video/OUcbV9siKec/v-deo.html
I don't weigh myself so I don't know but my clothes still fit. In that video I was doing a lot of running. In this video I haven't been doing much exercise for the past 18 months due to university studies and lockdown. That plus being 5 years older and having an extra kid and extra stress could explain why I look different I guess.
I just turned 70 on 2/14/22, five feet, 95 lbs. female. Not interested in loosing weight. Love potatoes, but stopped eating when diagnosed with pre-diabetes. Need more calories. Went from 117 lbs. to 95 lbs. what say ye? Thanks
Since the lost weight with air frying is water, couldn't you just eat the potatoes with two glasses of water to rehydrate them in your stomach and achieve the same calorie density as boiled potatoes?
No. Water as part of a whole food gets digested much more slowly because it first has to be separated from the fibre and everything else before it can be absorbed.
Can you show me a study where people who eat whole, unprocessed food that are cooked in an oven or air fryer have negative health outcomes? I've never seen any evidence of these claims.
@@SpudFit we know what damages those end products cause, and we know that style of cooking denatures vitamins and obliterates antioxidants, so putting people through a long-term study of that sort would be unethical. hiding behind the unstudied is no way to justify something. rather, it's a way to create good fake news about bad habits
@@taintmueslix but do they cause the same damage when consumed as part of a very healthy, whole, unprocessed plant food as they do when consumed in isolated form or as part of junk foods and animal foods? What impact does it have on longterm lifespan and healthspan? We don't have to put people through a controlled study, we can simply observe people who already eat a certain way and watch to see what happens. There have been a number of enormous studies along these lines where data could be pulled from to get a more accurate picture and make inferences. I've seen people make these claims and I've seen reasonable sounding hypotheses but I haven't seen them put to the test. Have you?
@@SpudFit I can only make inferences based on what we know about cooking methods, and the fact that diet is a zero-sum game. there probably aren't studies on outcomes comparing 100% whole food diets and 95% whole food/ 5% garbage food diets either, is that a good justification to recommend the latter over the former?
Once upon a time people discovered that foods containing beta carotene were very healthy so they inferred that isolated supplements would be a good idea. That turned out to be very wrong. The acrylamide theory is plausible but since I’ve only seen that more unprocessed plant foods and less processed and animal foods lead to better health outcomes, regardless of cooking method, I’m inclined to think it’s probably a non issue until I see evidence otherwise. Especially if you only eat air fries chips occasionally, as I suggest in this video.
The best calorie density video I have ever seen! You took one thing and showed how each kind of preparation effects the calorie density. Thankyou!
Thankyou that’s so kind of you to say 😊
