I've seen a good number of tutorials referencing these two patterns and suggestions for the various combos. Yours is by far my fave: it's well explained, simply demonstrated, and easy to follow. The soup-to-nuts examples you provide are unintimidating and accessible so that the committed beginner, experienced intermediate, and advanced players all can understand and digest this. Thanks so much, Josh! Excellent lesson.
HeyJ I do have presets in my head I have been playing since I was 4. I am now 59 I am also an instructor at the School of Rock. One of the things I tell the students especially for fills is have at least 3 go to fills & decide which one your going to do BEFORE you do it . The biggest mistake new and intermediate drummers make is doing a fill & changing it right in the middle of it then coming out off time.If you pick 1 2 or 3 in your head then move your will flow will happen & time mistakes will stop.Take the time to work on intros & special parts by them selfs .Then add that to your standards beats😎🎵🔈👍
Just picking up the drums again after a few years of medical issues. This video has me newly motivated and practicing again! Thanks for sharing these pattern combos!
@@JoshMerhar I spent 4 or 5 days learning your lesson on the linear modular grooves, they are so fun to play. Can you use them as fills also? I've been able to do paradiddles quite fast for a while but the combinations and phrasing that you have shown have been life changing!!
@@jpadam6978 Yes, you can absolutely use those as fills! Try orchestrating those patterns around the drums in different use to discover more possibilities. I'm glad you find them useful!
Thanks a lot for this inspiration. i´m a beginner looking for some effective tips to sound like a real drummer. This is easy to understand but hard enough to get smooth with it in higher tempos. Very fine
Hey Josh, love watching your videos. Always nice presented and good real teaching! And of course always killer playing. Keep up the good work and all the best. Stay safe and a big drummer hug from germany!
That's really interesting! I've yet to meet anyone else in the US (aside from family, of course) with the same last name. I'd love to see that part of the world some day!
Super vidéo très intéressante avec une batterie qui a une belle sonorité y compris celle de la grosse caisse contrairement à beaucoup de demo de modèle de batterie où la grosse caisse est vraiment détestable
Do you have any tips on how to improve ankle flexibility when playing the kick drum? I currently have an electronic drum kit and finding it difficult to play the kick repeatedly. Also love the videos man, keep it up!
great content. just an idea, add a simple track or even a pad when showing combinations or patterns. should add to the whole presentation. cheers my dudeeee!
Hi, Josh! I've been watching your videos for quite a while now. I enjoy your didactic way of explaining things. One very small question: Which Meinl hi-hat are you using? I'm in love with the sound (both open and close). Thank you very much.
Josh, I see the Zoom recorder in the background, starting at 0:16, and I see the snare drum mic. Is that all you're using for audio in your videos? I'm guessing you have the two channels on the recorder itself, and then two XLR in's; one for the snare, and one for the bass drum.
Yeah, you got it. I have a Zoom H5 that I use as "overheads" (it has an X/Y condenser configuration on it), an Audix D6 for the kick, and an SM57 for the snare. The sound isn't perfect, but with a touch of processing it works well for 4 mics!
Absolutely! You could play the pattern as LRRK instead, but you may find it most beneficial to learn it as both RLLK and LRRK so you don't need to cross your left hand over your right if you're moving down the toms.
I was just messing with this last night except I had a Kick at the end instead of a Left. I'm fairly new to the idea of linear grooves and fills. I find that it's much easier to learn an 8 pattern than (2) 4 patterns...if that makes sense...🤔
This will move things along for me.
What a GREAT video. Straight to the point, and super easy to apply. Glad I found your channel. 🤘

This is great! I've been working on these combinations separately but I haven't experimented with combining them like you've described. Thanks!

Interesting last name - European (Slovenian) heritage for sure :) I live in an area of Slovenia, where there's many people with your last name.

Who are the 7 people that gave this s thumbs down. This is great stuff.
Whats the second crash on the very right of ur kit?
Great lesson btw
Thanks for watching! That right crash is a 20" Paiste Masters Extra Thin crash. It's so buttery and delicious. 🤤

I play open position, hi hat & ride with left hand & snare with right. Can this practice exercise work for me if I adapt it somehow? Thanks
