This is what 95% of Double Stroke videos do not discuss. He did a great job in demonstrating it. Thanks!!
One of the most important fine techniques to learn in drumming, and yet it is the one with the fewest videos on UA-cam. There are only a handful of good videos which teach this technique well. This is definitely one of them.
Care list those few?
Yer killing us!
@@chezchezchezchez Gordy Knudson`s push/pull videos work a similar approach.
Yes sir. Drum Dog, Ralph Rolle. Awesome guy and walkthrough
I've been practicing non-stop for the past six weeks and I'm *so* happy with the progress I've made. Haven't had this much fun making music in all of my 37 years and almost 20 of drumming. I can play things cleanly and consistently I couldn't imagine even trying half a year ago.
That being said - your approach flipped a switch in my head. There's a time before and after, because after trying this for just a couple minutes, it felt like I never did anything else.
This might be one of the single most important lessons I've learned while grinding *everything* , so thank you very much indeed!
You know it's a great video when it makes you realize even simple is complicated. I liked the unscripted feel. Felt like a fireside chat. Very present.
that little exercise is extremely useful
I struggled with understanding the actual motion of double stroke but I finally got it after doing it a few times
thanks a lot
Man; thank you for this lesson. I’ve been playing forever but I’ve ALWAYS felt like my doubles are so sloppy and inconsistent. This is so awesome.
Been playing drums since I was 6, but only for fun. Could hold a steady 4/4 with the basic fills moving down the kit and ending with a crash. Started a 3 man band 4 years ago as a hobby and to jam with my friends in my free time (I'm now 30), and only last year because of Covid, I really had a lot of time to learn more about drumming. I literally found myself going through all the basics; like how to hold the stick correctly, working on basic rudiments like double stroke rolls, paradiddles and 6 stroke rolls, tuning the drums, reading basic sheet music, etc. I still have a long way to go, but it fascinates me how much these basic tools help in playing. 1 year made a hell of a lot of difference! All this knowledge is out here on youtube, and people like you spend a lot of time doing the dirty work so that the content is available for the rest of us. I have this bank of information, and all I have to do is keep working on these fundamental concepts and rudiments to allow me to physically orchestrate them on the drum set and have them sound good. I've been watching your videos often, and I just want to thank you (and others like you) from the bottom of my heart for taking the time and effort to get these highly informative videos out. You have definitely earned a subscriber and hopefully one day I can get good enough to teach you something!!
The best video describing the grip. Straight to the point.
Josh, for all the "lessons" and videos I have watched on finger technique and practicing doubles, your video is one of the best I've seen at explaining, demonstrating, and showing different angles of your grip and use of the fingers. Absolutely awesome! Thanks! (and I had NO idea your video wasn't "scripted"!)
Ive been playing drums 11 years and had some teachers who never explained how to get those even doubles but you sir have explained this amazingly with out all the confusing BS 🙏
It‘s incredible that this feels like the only Video that actually explains how to do a double strokes for beginners. I‘ve been playing for a couple years now but never learnt how to properly use your finger (hehe). This helps me a lot!
Open/close technique is a good exercise for finger drumming
Respects. I always played double strokes without the help of my fingers, even though i knew it was preferable, I couldn't do it.
Great job, hands down the best video for this technique.
Josh, I've been a guitarist for decades, but recently set a goal to learn drums so I could record my song ideas without programming drums. I knew that somehow the double strokes were based on some kind of controlled bounce, but your video made it instantly clear how it works and how to practice it. Many thanks to you my friend!
That’s the best explanation of technique for double strokes if ever seen
Never seen it explained like this before - love it, I already know it'll help me 😊
Oh, this is awesome. Thank you for that basic mechanical explanation on how this is to be accomplished. Other videos are borderline humble-bragging by "displaying" how simple double strokes are to do, but yours actually shows how to train for doing proper double strokes. I appreciate you making this video.
My chickety
This is so worth a look, excellent work
This is bloomin great. Subscribed 🙏

Finally a video that really breaks down the double stroke!! Thank you for this!
One of the best videos I've seen on this.
Wow, what a really really really good explanation, my friend graduated from Berkeley, he’s been trying to teach me this and I have been slacking. This video really seemed to hit home. It’s up to me now. Thank you so much! Great teacher
Best instructional video on this topic out there. Period.
Thanks coach 🔥🔥🔥
This is excellent nuggets of informationMy brother
At last a push-pull breakdown that actually works! Thank you!
very cool, thank you!
Well done Josh. You've just given me the missing piece of the puzzle in learning push/pull. That exercise of catch/release with the back fingers is the business. Many thanks.
out of a lot of videos ive watched i think youre the only person so far whos actually described/shown how to grip and use the back 3 fingers to move the stick. everytime i watch videos on how to double stroke they just mention using your back 3 fingers but never go into detail how
Thanks Josh! clear and useful compare to most of other tutorial videos that showing off their speeds!
It's basically all physics, great lesson. Subscribed.
The BEST explanation I've ever seen on how to do double strokes! Great Teacher!
Great instruction. Thank you
Great instruction!
Josh, Thank you! Perfect explanation. Especially the exercise from 4:33. Very helpful for my left (weaker) hand.
This is the most accurate explanation of the natural mechanics for push-pull strokes! it just awesome. Thanks a lot!
Dude I have for months been working on my double strokes , it all ways been there but weak untill i stumbled a cross your technique with just droping the stick a bringing back up, i now !! get full use of my little finger this way, i am amazied of how little effort have to put in and get more out thanks dude.
Your teaching is so good 🙏👌
Great teaching
OH MY GOD IT FINALLY MAKES SENSE
Thank you!
the best video ever! had trouble understanding what my instructor was showing with the double stroke but 5 minutes into this video i got it :)
best demonstration and explanation ever
Very nice explanation! Thanks!! 🥁🕺
Great info. Thanks.
Finally, I find the right teaching for this technique
Thank you🎉
Thanks very much, great explanation
I can play doubles really evenly and and soft and loud without my back fingers on the sticks but definitely feels like I don't have complete control when I comes to going from singles to doubles and accents. You explain it very well on what's necessary to achieve control so I will practice you instructions to get it right.
Great video... a game changer indeed!
Very good job !!
Thank you for a great lesson. My singles are good but just starting to understand doubles and the importance of finger placement/movement..... thanks again!
Excelent explanation man, i'm a drum teacher and sometimes it is really hard to explain this technique to my students and you do it very well, thank you!
Thanks, great video!
This is the best explanation and example of the double stroke. This video made it all click for me. Thank you
excellent first time at last someone really shows how it works. Thaaaaaaaaank you !!!!👋
Really thanks!
I’ve been playing just under a year and I really struggle with doubles. This is a great tutorial, thanks mate 👍🏻
Great lesson 👍
Oh my god, I've been playing drums for more than 10 years and it's only now that I've understood how to do this. Getting my first electronic drums next month. Damn, I'm excited to learn this. Thanks!
Same man. Over 20 years of drumming and I NEVER new we were supposed to push/pull. I just got really good at pinching the stick
I've been gigging for over 50 years. This is the first clear explanation of to make double strokes work. It's always been a weakness I've worked around. You nailed it. I'll be looking for your stuff elsewhere like Patron. Thanks.
One of the most knowledgeable and reliable instructors on UA-cam.
Great video, thank you
Incredible exercise
Thanks so much your the only person that made it make sense bro ily
Damn ... That groove!!!!
Good explanation!
Such a great video, Josh. I go through this video with a lot of my students to help them get started with this technique. Such clear and concise explanations and demonstrations! Thank you so much.
Very nice content. Subscribed!
This lesson will improve your double stroke roll even if you already have a pretty good double stroke roll. That 3 finger- no fulcrum exercise is awesome. Thanks!
Really helpful, I've been struggling with my double strokes for a long time, I could never get my double stroke roll consistent and close in speed to my single stroke roll. Now that I've seen your video, I'll work on this and I'm sure that with some time and a metronome, I'll improve my double strokes dramatically. Thanks!!
Thank you sooooooooooooooo much!
Just...Thanks man!
Top tip indeed!
Great video!!!!!
Best video on doubles I have seen, and I have watched a lot. Thank you!
Also what snare do you use?
I've just come across this man showing how to do double stoke notes, very interesting
This is excellent
Really good lesson
