I’ve been playing drums by ear growing up in church and now in my 30s I’m finally learning proper rudiments. I was discouraged that I couldn’t land those gospel chops but it’s literally just using proper rudiments around the kit. Great video man!

Great lesson! I noticed that a lot of gospel drummers are super skilled, but some of them are not very good at explaining how to play chops. 😂
You, on the other hand, explain things in a way that actually makes sense. Thank you for the lesson! I can’t wait to apply this.

I'm really digging the way this guy puts it together. I've known my rudiments 4 years but he is teaching a comprehensive approach to their uses that I can get on board with. He's a fantastic teacher

    Wow!!!🤯🤯
The intro chops are not complex but they have a touch of complexity in it. So smooth, flowing and overwhelming.
This is what I like to call "simple" but powerful.

This man is healing me!! LOL!!! But for real tho, a little history lesson. Back in the day for a lot of us church drummers the truth was you wasn't going past a pocket if you didn't have parents who could pay for your lessons or if you didn't pay for them yourself. I hope all the 9 to 15 year olds (and others) know how much this drummer is giving you. We didn't have youtube back in the day. You had to be lucky enough to know a drummer who was giggin with major acts to get this kind of instruction ( I went to school with one so for a couple of months he taught me but couldn't keep it up cause he had to go back on the road).
Please understand how much of a blessing it is to be able to go to a computer and just bring up Israel Houghton's drummer for free and get him to expertly and graciously break down chops for ya'll. I see this and sometimes think, man if only we had this when we were young. Back in the day if someone with half his talent came through your church and you was a kid trying to learn if you asked (not always) him (or her) to show you something they'd look at you like you was crazy. Sometimes we'd get the dude who would be like "sure lil bro" then he'd sit down, do the lick superfast like the flash, and be like there it is, I got to run, lol!!!! I can remember buying a world class drummer's VHS instructional tape ( a modern drummer cover dude back in the early 90's) and the whole one hour tape was just him showing off and not showing us anything!!!! Cost me 50 bucks!!!!
This man is slowin this stuff down and really breaking the sticking of these chops down. Please know this kind of instruction is priceless and FOR FREE???! Wow!!!!! It's good to be young in the age of the internet!!!! Young drummers count your blessings!!!!!
