I absolutely agree. I find his videos to be extremely helpful. And we all greatly appreciate you taking your time to make these videos to teach us what we can do at home.
I totally appreciate your advice! We just tried the de-scaling on our standard poodle (10 years old) with huge success! All of the tartar came off (big chunks) and we only used that little dental tool to scrape it off. We were super reluctant to put him under anesthesia for a dental cleaning, so we are extremely thankful for your video. Our dog held still and was a good sport the whole time!

Thank you so much for this!! My dog got a crappy, expensive cleaning at our last Veterinarian. I have been a "hooman" dental hygienist for 26yrs so I am very experienced. I bought a canine scaler but I prefer my "Hooman" scalers (I am more used to the blade angles I suspect). I am interested in an ultrasonic/sonic scaler, looking forward to THAT video :)
Thank you so much for this video! My dogs have been suffering from pretty bad tartar, and this is practically heaven sent! Is there a certain brand you recommend buying the Chlorhexidine rinse from?
Thank you. I wish my veterinarian had showed me this. Obviously I know the ideal way is to bring your dog into the vet to get teeth cleaned, and I have. It cost me around $500. both times. Unfortunately, I am not always able to pay that amount ( please don't say if you can't afford to spend the money on your dog you shouldn't have him/her- there are multiple reasons that is wrong to think). Thus, my poor doggie has worse tartar than she should, but had I known what I could have done on my own her teeth would have been at least better than nothing. So, thank you, Doctor :)
Very good, I just bought toothpaste and dental scraping instruments today, my 15 year old dog they said risk from anastesia might outway anything, so decided to try self. She has already let me scrape without resistance
I am so grateful for all your videos! I will definitely try the Monostat for my girl’s frito paws and her right ear. She has the prettiest white hair on her paws and it’s all discolored from licking due to the yeast infection. I have been using apple cider vinegar on her paws for months but the smell comes back and the discoloration has never gone away. My girl Bene’ has trouble every now and then with yeast in her right ear. Shes had medicine from her Veterenarian and it takes care of it but it might come back months later. I bought an ear rinse for dogs and it’s for fungus that I will use if needed. BUT I’m going to try the Monistat for both her ear and paws along with your concoction for her teeth and gums. Thank you so very much for taking your valuable time to make videos to help us dog parents at home. 🏆 ⭐️ ❤You’re the BEST! I will comment after several weeks to post our outcome..
My rescue who spent her entire first year in a crate in a rescue center did not want me to touch her mouth. I stared out using (Bright triple enzyme dog toothpaste) on my finger for many months to acclimate her to me being in her mouth. After 5-6 months of doing this, she now lets me use a gentle toothbrush on her teeth. This process along with chewing beef bones (she loved these) we have no teeth or gum issues at all. I am always into prevention whenever possible. I would also use CQ 10 if needed. Co Q 10 SAVED my gums!
I took a piece of a metal mechanical pencil, and it actually worked great for chipping off thick layers of plaque from my dogs teeth! he was calmer than any dog I;ve known, so it worked out amazingly!!!
It works! Thank you so much! Took about 15 minutes to do the one tooth because she squirms so much, but it popped right off like you said it would using a tool like you suggested. Amazing. Only going to do one a day until she get used to it, but it didn't hurt her. She doesn't like getting her nails clipped either. :)
This is genius and no it doesn't hurt your dog unless they have teeth so bad they would need to be pulled. In that case you need to see a vet. I used a scaler for dogs, and it cleaned off the hard plaque and calculus. His teeth are super clean now. 👌
Please tell us more about the scalars you are using. What are they called and where can we find them? The ones sold on Amazon are large and extremely sharp? What precautions should we take to avoid damaging the enamel?
I have a pick that vibrates and water mist. I found hand scaling with them tools, actually ruffed up the tooth and got more tartar than ever, because your scraping. The descaler with vibration is best.
Years ago I bought a pet scaling "kit". The main scaler looks more like a "hoe", which you gently put slightly above the gumline and "hook" onto the edge of the tartar and pull down, popping off the tartar. I find it works great on the dogs I've had, but cats are a bit more tricky! The kit also came with a hard plastic "bar" which rests between the teeth (on dogs, it's too big for cats) which keeps the mouth slightly open, making it a little easier to access those back teeth. I've never had to take a dog in for a dental, however, like I said, I find the cats harder to do and have had to do some dental work at the vet in the past. These days though, I can barely afford a plain vet visit, let alone any kind of treatment. 🙄
This was great information and Luis is such a good dog. How about an old dog that cannot have any procedure due to age an heart murmur what can be used for him he has a bad tooth
My vet quoted me for like $1.2k to get my dog's teeth cleaned. I ordered a kit for $30 and did it myself. All the tartar is gone and I didn't pay a shit ton or risk putting him under. Checked to make sure all his teeth were solid and called it good. He's much happier now
I just took my dog to the vet today to get his teeth scaled and polished, he had a bad reaction to the anaesthesia and had seizures going in and out. The dog is a small breed, 5 years old and definitely needed work done on his teeth it was getting red and swollen at the gum line. So yeah I find this video very helpful because if my dog needs dental work done we can't take him to the vet, just need to maintain it and do it at home.
Same with my pup, a healthy bichon who had seizures for the first time in his life after a vet visit at age 10 - I wonder if it were the medicines during the visit or the stress of the visit. He was since diagnosed with epilepsy and we're forced to put him on a maintenance drug because the threat/risk of the ongoing seizures was so bad after this visit.
Thank you for this. I took my dog into the vet today to see if she could get the dental treatment done with anaesthesia but she has a heart murmur and was denied without more expensive tests. This will help us in the meantime. Thank you. ❤
But most dogs are not this calm when opening their mouths. Hi, Doc, what do you suggest for getting a dog to this calm state?? Any herbs or natual substances we can use to make them calm for the teeth cleaning procedure? Thanks.
I use a dental pick on my Frenchies teeth. I am super careful and the vet said I was doing a good job. I have always scaled my dogs teeth myself. It’s a little more difficult on a Frenchie considering the physicality of their mouth. 🇨🇦❤️
Louis looks like my dog, Hunter. Both Black Labs. I brush his teeth every day. I would brush twice, but once is pretty effective. Hunter is 16 now with great teeth that have absolutely zero gingivitis that so many dogs experience. He's had two pro cleanings before. He's also got a nice silver crown on the left canine tooth since he broke it when he was age 6 so, I found a dental vet to fix it. That was a root canal + crown. Scaling is easy if your dog is used to letting you brush teeth. Good way to avoid unnecessary anesthesia but, if the dog is not so cooperative, or the mouth is truly gunky, it's really necessary to get the pro cleaning done first then follow up with routine brushing + scaling if needed. If someone has a dog that is anesthesia sensitive, home cleaning is an option. It just takes time.
Thank you so much for this video, super informative and helpful!!👏😊 Is there an alternative flush, I can’t seem to find that brand of hexadene flush, is there an alternative you recommended to purchase online?
Thank you! Geez! My 2 yr old Jack Russell/ shishtzu has teeth that isn’t ideal…staining started especially on the back molars! This instructional video helps me feel more comfortable in doing this cleaning ….Get this, I brush her teeth everyotner day with enzymatic toothpaste , too! 🤦♀🤷♀
Do you find that the metal tools create micro scratches on the enamel? My dog started building up more plaque after I starting using instruments. I know hygienists have to spend lots of time in school learning how not to scratch the enamel with proper positioning and type of tools they use then polishing. I was wondering if it's the same for doggy dental?
I think his video was good I ordered The tooth scaler‘s online. I have a small dog the vet said he has a little gingivitis. his gums are just a little red I had to hold my dog down because he didn’t like it LOL but I had them in a cup position and I was able to do one tooth I had the gauze and water ready. I will try to do one tooth a week not to stress the dog out! The cost of cleaning dogs teeth is ridiculous. And some don’t take payment plans The cost is between three and $700 but closer to 700 when you get there because they add on all this extra stuff just to make money, When are we want to do is care for pets the best we can. Thank you Dr. Jones!
I recently saw an adult dog without papers for an adoption fee of $1,800! Pet lovers need to pinch every penny today. Thank you for helping us. Vets can still make a living handling things we cannot do.
I used to work for a really good Vet. He was likeable and honest....however he was driven by success .... opened another clinic.....encouraged me to call clients and get them scheduled for annual vaccinations. This at the time was more acceptable. We have since learned that immunity by vaccination is not necessary every year, provided the cat or dog has had a full program of vaccinations at one time. You can test for where exactly the dog needs protection after that with a blood exam.. I am not a Vet. But I also do not want to over vaccinate my dogs and cats, and cause more harm than good. More and more, Vets are admitting that immunology is not recommended every year; without first testing to see where the animal is lacking for protection, i.e. Parvo ... then a booster would be given. Ask your Vet.... Now, I will watch D r. Jones with a tutorial on scaling my dog's teeth. Currently we are brushing and thankfully the toothpaste which is dog paste, not human toothpaste (no no no) will work to loosen tarter.......very hopeful. I really appreciate Dr. Jones.
Thank you so much for your videos, Dr Andrew Jones! This one in particular has been a great help to me this week! It made me brave enough to start to tackle this here at home. Lots of love and Shalom from the UNITED Kingdom
Thank you very much for your advice. I just spent over two hundred on one dog for dental issues and just checked my other two dogs teeth. I really don't have any more money to take them into the vet. I will try this and see if it helps. One of the dogs has two teeth that look really bad. I watched one video too that said he used a fresh breath gel that helped to soften the target. Do you agree that this will help? Thank you very much. God Bless
Thank you so much Dr Jones ;) for showing me how to clean my dogs teeth . Feeling proud of my lovely doggy he was good. Proud of me attempting it . Got all things prepared and went ahead. I am so pleased I got the bit of tartar off 2 teeth .
How much pressure should you be putting? I tried scaling my maltese's teeth but I'm too scared of hurting her, also does wetting the scale now and then help?
Thank you so much for your thorough tutorial and thanks to your beautiful patient dog. I hope you still have him but he would be very old now. He was a star. In the uk we can’t buy clorhexadine over the counter what else could we use please. Thank you again
The first principal is to have the dog relaxed and trust you…..for many it is an obstacle that cannot be overcome and the exercise becomes impossible. Many dogs come to me for training, usually with an owner somewhere dragging behind on a leash. These dogs have never been handled correctly other than to be fed a continuous stream of treats or cuddled as if it’s a small child. When it comes to addressing any health issue it becomes a battle of wills and then a trip to the vet as a stress related escape route. Before you begin to address dental or any other issues, handle the beast, let it become familiar with you lifting the lips, looking inside the ears, lifting it’s tail, examine the feet but ensure the dog is calm at all times otherwise a trip to the local hospital may result as well as the vet. If the dog will walk to heel, on and off the leash, that is a good place to start. After grooming the dog and the dental wrestling match has reached round 10, you’ve had your shower and calmed down, give the poor dog a good raw bone with a little flesh and relax with a glass of something alcoholic because you will have only scratched the surface, literally and the challenge will need to be repeated in a couple of days. Make sure the store of alcohol is well stocked. After time it will become easier, it isn’t difficult and the dog will accept the procedure as a daily routine but take it slowly, the first time no longer than 10 seconds otherwise you may need the help of family or friend to apply a first aid dressing to your wounds. The question I am asked most……”When do you begin training a dog?” My reply if from one of my dogs….”As soon as it comes out of the bitch.” The next question invariably is….. “When do you stop training your dogs?” My reply….you’ve probably guessed by now…”When I bury it.” Canines are, or should be an important part of your life, provide guidelines and boundaries and they are an absolute delight at all times but they have to trust you. Once you have their trust, cleaning their teeth becomes a pleasant experience for both parties…….hopefully.
FANTASTIC....thank you!! so many dogs suffer because we can't afford the minimum of 400.00 to have their teeth cleaned....NOW they want blood work on top of it....LUDICROUS ....ESTIMATE: 1000.00 because my new rescue is 14 yrs old! so appreciate vets like YOU!
Thx so much for this! I usually just let my vet do the cleaning every year but now the vet he’s in with is demanding vaccines for a cleaning 🙄so looks like I’m going to learn how to scale it myself. Thx so much! ❤
So once your dog gets used to this little by little if you just put the scraper to one of their tooth and let them feel the motion and then reward with a treat leave it at that and try it again the next day leave it at that then do it again the third day and then do another Truth at that moment keep on going to see what they're tolerance is at that point and then reward after that and then continue until you build a little tolerance like the doggy showing here on the video. Another very helpful tip I would suggest is...., put the scraper on the tooth and push up on the gum line and then scrape down ......rather than going UP TO the gum line with the scraper and then scraping down., This way it avoids catching that little bit of that thin gum that ends on the tooth and gum line and you can avoid bleeding as much as possible.
Hey doc thanks for sharing this video! I have 2 rescue dogs and Vet visits cost alot in my country. Do you have any recommendations for scaling of cats teeth. thanks
Another great video- thanks for sharing. I was going to go to the vet but I am very hesitant since they have to put him under. He still has a baby tooth up against his canine. It looks a little brown around the tops of both of those. His gums are not very rad, maybe slightly so. Do you think this is something I could still go on my own? Like your dog, he is very patient and would allow me to do it.
Thank you so much. We were quoted 800 to 1200 dollars to get out older dog's teeth cleaned. We can't afford it so I'm going to spend some time desensitizing her to these tools.
This is a great topic! Questions: The bones you mentioned, is it better cooked or raw? Whats your favorite hand scalers? Is there any way you could close up on the video? thank you!
Hi and Thanks. Better if Raw. Here is a good one on Amazon: www.amazon.ca/Tooth-Scaler-Perfect-Cats-Dogs/dp/B00CD7196C Yes will do another in the future with a new scaler
I've been doing this for 9 years with my dog since he was a puppy. He is complient as Luis. After scaling I notice my dog breath smells much better. I scale teeth about 1 per month.

Good to hear:)
It works! Thank you so much! Took about 15 minutes to do the one tooth because she squirms so much, but it popped right off like you said it would using a tool like you suggested. Amazing. Only going to do one a day until she get used to it, but it didn't hurt her. She doesn't like getting her nails clipped either. :)
He cares about animals more than money. I appreciate that. Kudos!
He's much happier now
Good job:)
Thank you for caring for animals and letting us know how.
Welcome and Thanks
Veterinary Secrets Hhhhhhhh h h. Uhh hi
Lelo
I just took my dog to the vet today to get his teeth scaled and polished, he had a bad reaction to the anaesthesia and had seizures going in and out. The dog is a small breed, 5 years old and definitely needed work done on his teeth it was getting red and swollen at the gum line. So yeah I find this video very helpful because if my dog needs dental work done we can't take him to the vet, just need to maintain it and do it at home.
Oh my. That must have been horrible.
Ashley Attanucci 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Thank you friend r caring about pets of those who can't afford help
Yes I too what love to know which kind of scalers fit into the bracket of not too rough….not too light.
Any product suggestions ??
Thank you so much for this video, super informative and helpful!!👏😊 Is there an alternative flush, I can’t seem to find that brand of hexadene flush, is there an alternative you recommended to purchase online?
Thank you! Geez! My 2 yr old Jack Russell/ shishtzu has teeth that isn’t ideal…staining started especially on the back molars! This instructional video helps me feel more comfortable in doing this cleaning ….Get this, I brush her teeth everyotner day with enzymatic toothpaste , too! 🤦♀🤷♀
Thank you doctor I wanted to know is miswak ok for them? You are the best
I did this on one of my dogs had build up more than the other. Good advice. But where do you get those tools?
Louis your such a good boy! is he on sedative? I am scared to put my small dog for anesthesia for teeth cleaning.
Thank you for this.can I ask is the chlorhexidine the one that we can buy for humans. As in same strength or do you dilute it?
I think his video was good I ordered The tooth scaler‘s online. I have a small dog the vet said he has a little gingivitis. his gums are just a little red I had to hold my dog down because he didn’t like it LOL but I had them in a cup position and I was able to do one tooth I had the gauze and water ready.
I will try to do one tooth a week not to stress the dog out! The cost of cleaning dogs teeth is ridiculous. And some don’t take payment plans
The cost is between three and $700 but closer to 700 when you get there because they add on all this extra stuff just to make money, When are we want to do is care for pets the best we can.
Thank you Dr. Jones!
“Luis is especially compliant”
....Luis looks passed the fk out.
Or heavily sedated.
Lol! What a good boy.
I recently saw an adult dog without papers for an adoption fee of $1,800! Pet lovers need to pinch every penny today. Thank you for helping us. Vets can still make a living handling things we cannot do.
Can you please share all the tools and supplements I would need to buy.
Thank you very much! You and your dog are both awesome! He is so cooperative/compliant;he trusts you that much.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Jones.
Thanks Larna
Is it true that scrapping the teeth to remove the tartar affects the enamel? If so, that means we should polish the teeth?
Can you please tell me where I can get these tools for my 3 year old Chihuahua. Her issues are not bad yet. I totally appreciate you!
Thank you so much for your videos, Dr Andrew Jones! This one in particular has been a great help to me this week!
It made me brave enough to start to tackle this here at home.
Lots of love and Shalom from the UNITED Kingdom
Dr. Jones, thank you for this great video! Where do I get these cleaning dental tools?
Any suggestions on what to use for the antiseptic after if we don't have chlorhexidine?
How much pressure should you be putting? I tried scaling my maltese's teeth but I'm too scared of hurting her, also does wetting the scale now and then help?
What a patient boy......Did you mention how often we should try to scale the teeth? Thx
Hi,
I do this to Lewis every 6 months or as needed
The question I am asked most……”When do you begin training a dog?” My reply if from one of my dogs….”As soon as it comes out of the bitch.”
The next question invariably is….. “When do you stop training your dogs?” My reply….you’ve probably guessed by now…”When I bury it.”
Canines are, or should be an important part of your life, provide guidelines and boundaries and they are an absolute delight at all times but they have to trust you. Once you have their trust, cleaning their teeth becomes a pleasant experience for both parties…….hopefully.
Do you think products like dentastix work?
I'll have to do some dental cleaning with my Chihuahua. I guess I'll use Valerian for him. Thanks for showing this to everyone.
I really appreciate your video, where can i get dental scaling equipment for pet please. thank you
How do you get the INSIDE surfaces, away from the cheek?
May I ask if you sedated your dog in some way or is that how he usually is?
Where do I get the anticeptive ? And what about polishing after?
FANTASTIC....thank you!! so many dogs suffer because we can't afford the minimum of 400.00 to have their teeth cleaned....NOW they want blood work on top of it....LUDICROUS ....ESTIMATE: 1000.00 because my new rescue is 14 yrs old! so appreciate vets like YOU!
I know right!
Thx so much for this! I usually just let my vet do the cleaning every year but now the vet he’s in with is demanding vaccines for a cleaning 🙄so looks like I’m going to learn how to scale it myself. Thx so much! ❤
Do u have a helpful video on how to deal and tips on how to take care and things to use and how long can she wear a diaper?
So once your dog gets used to this little by little if you just put the scraper to one of their tooth and let them feel the motion and then reward with a treat leave it at that and try it again the next day leave it at that then do it again the third day and then do another Truth at that moment keep on going to see what they're tolerance is at that point and then reward after that and then continue until you build a little tolerance like the doggy showing here on the video.
Another very helpful tip I would suggest is...., put the scraper on the tooth and push up on the gum line and then scrape down ......rather than going UP TO the gum line with the scraper and then scraping down., This way it avoids catching that
little bit of that thin gum that ends on the tooth and gum line and you can avoid bleeding as much as possible.
Sir what tools do I need to ask for at the pet store for doing this?
Great advice. Just wish closer shots of removing tartar and close up of tools. Thanks
Wish my dog was this calm
This is a great topic! Questions: The bones you mentioned, is it better cooked or raw? Whats your favorite hand scalers? Is there any way you could close up on the video? thank you!
Hi and Thanks. Better if Raw. Here is a good one on Amazon: www.amazon.ca/Tooth-Scaler-Perfect-Cats-Dogs/dp/B00CD7196C Yes will do another in the future with a new scaler
Thanks Dr. Andrew, your videos are interesting and fact-filled! Thanks again'
Thank You Denyse
I've been doing this for 9 years with my dog since he was a puppy. He is complient as Luis. After scaling I notice my dog breath smells much better. I scale teeth about 1 per month.
Good to hear, thank you.
Love all your videos! How can we find these dental cleaning tools?
I got to laugh you and Lewis so silly he is such a good spot I love it 😅
Thanks he is!
Yes he is..Thanks!
